I really like both color samples and I really like both bikes, ..BUT
it's that extra top tube that I just can't get past. Is it really
necessary? Seems a little too contrarian...again to each his own.

Woe is me.  Why didn't Rivendell choose those classy colors for the
Hunqapillar instead of the ghastly colors they settled on?  A double
top tube never looked so elegant.

I think the blue and red they're thinking of are simply
 stunninghttp://www.flickr.com/photos/mannyacosta/4430642239/and the
Bombadil colors a bit washed out and neutral.  To each his own!

[RBW] Soggy Sunday Ride

2010-03-15 Thread Frederick, Steve
Got out briefly on the Saluki sunday--been itching to try the the new stuff I
installed over the winter: new Berthoud stainless steel fenders with new VO
leather mudflap and U.S. made leather bartape.

I headed down the Lansing River trail but even the finest fenders won't protect
you from Spring time Red Cedar River levels! (that's the trail right behind me
in this pic)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/40738...@n08/4432754952/

Since no one makes leather or stainless steel pontoons, I settled for a brief
meander around and south of MSU campus, totalling around twenty miles. That
felt like enough with sprinkles and drizzle, gusty 20mph winds and my current
(lack of) fitness level...

The fenders and flap worked great on the soggy roads, the bar tape seemed
fine--it's hard to judge grip or comfort in the winter gloves. I'm looking
forward to trying it again once the weather improves.

I do not think Riv has much risk, however.  It appears Sugino makes the

Agree, as long as it doesn't tie up too much money that could go

Except for the Roadeo and a few bits here and there, all of Rivs bikes
and components are directed for other than the racer or wannabe

yes, in fact I just noticed a thread in another forum where someone wanted a
way to mount a rack to a (carbon stayed) bike that had no eyelets. Someone
mentioned P-Clamps, while someone else noted he shouldn't try for more than 15
lbs of gear on it. Personally, I don;t think carbon stays were designed with
pannier racks in mind, so I would not suggest P-clamping one on.

[RBW] Mounting a Mini MagLite as a Headlamp?

2010-03-15 Thread Sean Whelan
I commuted to work today in heavy traffic. The recent time change has it dark
for the early part of my ride. I have tail-lights like crazy, but the years
have taken their toll and I don't have a headlamp for those first few minutes
of the ride before the sun shows its face.

I am thinking of getting through the next few weeks with an improvised
headlamp. I have a heavy duty mini MagLite from my days as Rock N Roller and /
or Roadie.

Has anyone ever mounted one of these gracefully? My goal is to be seen, not to
illuminate the pavement.

Extra points to someone who can show me how to do it with my John's Irish Strap.

Re: [RBW] Mounting a Mini MagLite as a Headlamp?

2010-03-15 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I've mounted two, a AA LED and a big 3-D Krypton. (The 2 AA LED is as bright
as the big one.)

For the small one I used a 2-Fish lockblock, the model with the rubber
grooves or clasps at right angle to each other so that one velcros to the
bar and the other velcros the flashlight forward-facing. (You can also get
them with clasps/grooves in-line, for mounting on the stem extension.)

For the big one I rigged up a holder by bolting two hardware store pipe
clasps or mounts to a flat piece of bar stock, then bolted the bar stock to
a Minora handle-bar water bottle mount. (I've also mounted the bar stock to
a small piece of handlebar which I have dremeled at one end to fit snugly
and at right angles to the left fork leg, and then slotted to accept a small
hose clamp with which I clamp it securely to the fork. Use some tape
underneath. Of course you can also use the lock block on one of these, too,
and, also of course, they are very useful for mounting bar-mount headlights
lower down.)

I recently raised this question on the iBoblist since two of my dyno lights
don't stand long enough to be safe at long intersections. My goal is to
find a bright white blinky that I can clamp to the left fork leg just below
the brake caliper which I can reach down to and switch on at long
intersections; after I come to a stop, of course. Any suggestions, anyone?
The old Vetta white blinkies are no longer made, afaik.

My home-built LED light is basically a flashlight-like tube, and it's
currently mounted with two stainless hose clamps. Use a 1 clamp for the bar
and whatever size needed to fit the light. Open one clamp and loop through
the second, so they make a right angle. One gets clamped around the light,
and the other around the handlebars. Not the most elegant system, but
certainly durable.

The best arrangement, imo, is the dyno BM 4D Lite Plus (or sumthin') --

[RBW] Re: Mounting a Mini MagLite as a Headlamp?

2010-03-15 Thread Philip Williamson
I have a machined aluminum handlebar mount for mini maglights. It's on
my son's bike, now but it's been in use off and on (ha) since the 80s.
It occupies the same brainspace as the Hite Rite, but I don't know if
they were related products. I see them around sometimes and it makes
me happy.

I also mounted a mini maglite to my Nitto M12 front rack with a P-
clamp to one of the threaded mounts. That worked great.

I am thinking of getting through the next few weeks with an improvised

Has anyone ever mounted one of these gracefully? My goal is to be seen, not

[RBW] Re: 43mm Honjos on a Ram/Rom

2010-03-15 Thread Esteban
Michael - that's a lovely bike. I do like how the bike rides with the
28mm Paselas, and upon Aarons urging, I'm going to pick up some
Challenge Parigi-Roubaixs on the next paycheck.

May I ask, how do you have the front fender mounted? Those are the
43mm Honjos, right? The Campy brakes may afford more clearance than
the mid-reach Shimanos that came with the bike?

All this being said, I do enjoy some Romulus on the trails with Pasela
35s!

[RBW] Suntour Shifter question

2010-03-15 Thread Jamie Hascall
I'm doing a rehab on my wife's old Specialized Sirrus (she hasn't
ridden it since she got her Glorious) and came up against a shifter
conundrum. The bike is set up with Suntour Edge derailleurs and
Accushift downtube shifters. Has anyone ever tried to mate a set of
those shifters to a set of bar end pods as you would with a set of Riv
Silvers? The whole system is in good shape and looks to be from the
final period of Suntour when they were making well designed gear again
but couldn't overcome Shimano and their own previous errors.

Thanks

Re: [RBW] Re: good seatstay taillight?

2010-03-15 Thread Victor Ivanov
If the superflashes (and other PB lights) are only used in the rain
for a short time they are fine. If they get soaked every day they will
have problems, although if you take them apart and dry them out with a
hair dryer they will usually work again. The main problem with the
superflashes is that they fall off of people's bike like crazy. I own
three that I have found on the side of the road. They tend to come out
of the mounting bracket, the part of the light that goes into the
bracket can come out of the body, and the light itself can fall out of
the body. I recomend superglue and tape when mounting the light.

Just this morning I took my 40mm Berthoud fenders off my Rambouillet.
I had been using Ruffy Tuffy tires and am pretty sure I could have
used Pasela 28s with no problems. You might want to look into those
SKS/Berthoud fenders as you might be able to use 32s with them. When I
first got my Rambouillet I was running SKS P45s with Pasela 32s.

Lots of photos here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335...@n00/sets/72157613195345103/

I took the fenders off today because I wanted to run bigger tires. The
RTs were okay but just too small. I had some Pasela 32s and put them
on, much better. I'll leave it un-fendered for a while. My Hilsen has
Berthouds on it and so does the QB. I figure I'll save the Rambouillet
for nice sunny days like today.

[RBW] Re: V-Brake lever question

the IRD's are mechanical and use a cable to actuate. The adjustment of

These are the original double bangers from about five, six years ago.
They're full hydraulic. You can see the little reservoir on the levers
here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/4433448602/

From what I read their design is pretty cool. Both pads move instead of
just one side compressing against the fixed side. Thanks for the tip on the
shim/spacer. Like I mentioned here and/or on the pics, I have no experience
with these on a bike (although I love changing brake pads on my car!).

The double banger actually moves both disc pads instead of just one
 side like the Avids.

[RBW] Rivendell brings love ones together!

2010-03-15 Thread manueljohnacosta

Last Saturday my girlfriend and I decided to start at Bitersweet
chocolate shop and bike to Rivendell. She wanted to see what all the
hubbub was all about and why I spend so much money there. We had
beautiful weather and got lunch at the Rivendell-recommended Tulios.
She yelled at me for buying to much stuff and we were off back to
Danville. Right when we get back on the Iron Horse trial a lumber yard
explodes and we ride back with dark scary clouds in our pictures.
Funny way to make a good couple day.
