[RBW] Re: Mudflaps - inside fender or outside fender?
I mount my mud flaps on the inside, it curves the flap and helps it stay in place rather than deflecting in the wind. Some planet bike flaps fit over the end of the fender (both inside and outside?). Angus On Jun 10, 9:18 am, rswat...@me.com wrote: I use inside mounting. Am I the only one? I zip-tie the leather flap to an appropriately sized piece of plastic (credit card works great) and snap the plastic bit inside the metal fender between the rolled edges. Secure, quick release, no fender modification needed. Zip tie is just for insurance. Friction usually holds it between the plastic card and the fender just fine. Cheers, Ryan On Jun 10, 2010, at 7:31, Mike mjawn...@gmail.com wrote: There was an article in an old issue of Bicycle Quarterly about mounting leather flaps inside the fender. I like the looks of the Sackville more and they're lighter and have the reflective strip on them. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I will try lowering the yoke on the front, and I'll toe the brakes more dramatically. I feel bad now for watching a CX race and wondering what's wrong with these people's brakes/mechanics? because 65% of the them would come diving into a turn with their forks going gackgackgackgackgack. The problem is more radial slop than length-wise slop as was previously mentioned. I had terrible brake shudder, because when the brakes hit the rim, the cantis would rotate enough on the stud to remove the little bit of toe-in that they had when not engaged. I ended up re-postioning the pads with a lot of toe-in and that solved the problem. Other than that issue, which I'm not sure is due to the under sized stud or oversized brake bushing, I love the CR720s. So the bosses seem a shade too long for the brakes, both front and rear Has anyone else noticed this with the CR720? Should I add a thin washer under the nut? Under the brake? Is this the reason I get brake chatter on the front, or is that the pads still being brand new? Would moving the spring-end to the tighter hole keep the brakes from rattling as much? Also, regarding braking power, they seem the same as the old brakes. They're high profile, so I've got a high cable yoke. It can't get much higher. I want a stronger front brake with a higher yoke, since I can't lower the stock low-profile brake's yoke any further, due to the M12's mounting rod. Have you considered V-brakes? I tried the CR720 on my Quickbeam for a couple of years too, but recently switched to Avid Single Digit V-brakes (requires different levers or a Travel Agent). They do have a lot of stopping power. Re: [RBW] Re: New Brand V Bags
You're right, it's never going to hold a load like a buckle system. Guess I should have thought of that before I purchased it. I used the simple solution when the failure occurred on two separate occasions. It was not a major problem - only one side would come loose - but it's not something I should have to be concerned about on a brevet and it's certainly going to stop me from attempting to put anything heavy into it. The simple solution that I now use - and it works - is to use my older Kevin's Bag. Guess I'll stick with my original strong statement. Bill In a message dated 6/11/2010 12:19:03 A.M. Its difficult to find any fault with the Acorn bags - made right here in Southern California. I echo the comments stated here as to the qualities of the bags. They usually have them at Box Dog, often in a light brown in addition to the blue: http://www.boxdogbikes.com/blog/?p=2023 I hate to mention it, because the wait list is 3 years, but Adam's Zugster rando bags are just about perfect, especially in the waterproof dept. and a modern take on the traditional boxy bag rather light: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25671...@n02/4135825873/in/set-72157622881252990/ The Inujirushi will fill out the space made by the headtube and h'bars better than the others, and those are very well made. I did learn something I didn't know about this odd chain: it's got function and style I don't deserve. I guess I'm not really Kool, sorry. Maybe someday. You do not need it. You could keep it as well and wear it from your pant's belt loops, or around your neck. Chains fail at the rivet connection, and wear at the rivets inside the plates. But ALSO at the side plates. What? Yes, when you grind down public property, like rails and ramps, you ride literally on the chain, and hence the heavy side plates. Having heavy plates gets you more life out of the chain as you enjoy the great outdoors and grind away. See, kool kool kool, no? And I don't deserve this chain. [RBW] Re: Time to replace the Quickbeam Chain Again; Did I make a $16 mistake?
In Vt., we do lots of hills, my commute for example has two separate mile plus climbs and descents with 7-10% grades - in each direction. So I get plenty of opportunity to launch myself along in a 48/12. Smaller cogs like a 12 will hit each tooth much more often than the larger cogs. When I'm running the 48/12 I will be turning it over 4 time per pedal revolution whereas when I'm in a 34/24 it's only 1.4 times, and there are twice as many teeth to hit on each evolution. At least that's why I believe I always wear out the smaller cogs first. I wish it weren't so. I think of chains and cables as general wear items and like to start each season with new brake cables and a new or at least newish chain. I ride 10 miles of dirt roads almost every day, so even with fenders, my chains get dirty. I use the Park tool on my chains and find that I got about 1500 miles out of Shimano chains, so I consider 2500 - 3000 miles pretty good. Most mechanics, and all mfg. recommend chains be replaced at about 1500 miles. I don't often ride with a bike computer and don't keep any mileage log, but I know that I do about 3500 miles commuting each season, and have never pushed a chain longer than that. A worn chain will wear out the cogs much faster, and I find that if I push a chain too far, it will damage the 12 tooth cog enough to cause skipping. I also use two sets of wheels, so am using multiple cassettes and that might make a difference too. I think the dirt roads are the key here. I'm amazed that you wear out a 12T sprocket. I find 12s to be nearly useless except on tandems and if you have a 44T big ring -- and even there, you're in the top gear so infrequently a 12 tooth sprocket could be transferred from cassette to cassette a half dozen times or more without showing significant wear. For me, it's the ones in the middle of the block that get the wear. Recommending a chain replacement at 1500 miles irrespective of wear might be fine if you are in the business of selling chains, but unless that chain is actually worn it's just wasteful. If it is worn, of course replacement is in order. Chains are much less expensive than cassettes. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. It's true that smaller sprockets wear faster than larger ones, all else being equal, for just the reason you cite. However, even counting those 7-10% descents, I'd be surprised if you were in the 48x12 long enough to create significant wear -- after all, even if you spin like crazy, how long before you spin out and start coasting? Not long, I'd imagine. And obviously, you don't use that 48x12 on the flats. So for most of us, the 12 doesn't get a whole lot of use -- that is, unless you're doing a lot of riding in the middle ring/smallest sprocket combination. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Flying Wheels
Anyone else doing Flying Wheels tomorrow? http://cascade.org/EandR/flying/FW_Details.cfm Russ Harper and I will be riding the 65-mile course. I'll be on my butterscotch Saluki with eggplant bar wrap. Supposed to be glorious weather tomorrow! If I finish it'll be my longest ride yet in my bicycle come-back. :) If you see me, say hello! [RBW] Since we're talking about rides tomorrow..
I'll be taking Louise, my Rambouillet, from Prattville to Selma and back. Our destination is the Edmund Pettus Bridge, significant in 1960s civil rights history and the site of an annual observance of those earlier events. We'll catch brunch at the well known Downtowner Restaurant. Other bikes expected include a Bilenky, but RBWs are rare in these parts. On Memorial Day, we toured north to a Civil War vets cemetery. There is a lot of history almost anywhere you live. All it takes is getting out and riding to see it. If I ride from home, it's 94 miles, if I drive to the start point, 76. I'll see how I feel about it in the morning.. It goes without saying that anyone within the sound of my voice is welcome to join us...let me know if you need directions to the start. :) Tailwinds and enjoy your weekend, on your SalHomerRamHillBombaHunqaGloriWilburFoyGomezAllLowLanticQuickStandard bikes! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Since we're still a month out and my life is rarely so organized that I know where I'll be by then, I'll figure on making more concrete plans a little closer to the day. Sounds like fun, though, as long as the wind isn't blowing like it has in Stockton the last couple of days (sustained winds between 17 and 22 MPH with gusts as high as 34 today - I'd rather ride hills any day).
