[RBW] Re: Bomb(s)
Da Bomb. Very similar to my 1981 Santana tandem... er ... the 1981 Santana tandem ... the only frame design made by Santana at the time. Of course for those of you who remember, the single lateral tube ran from the head tube to the rear seat tube and then split and connected to the seat stays, several inches above the dropout. The twin laterals actually started in front of the rear seat tube and was joined to the rear seat tube. The triangulation made the Santana one stiff rear end with NO flex ... and added a bit o' weight. I loved my 47 pound beast and miss her greatly. Ah, the foolish things we do when we sell our bicycles to pay for stupid investments... like a college education! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Atlantis vs. Hunq vs. Bomb(s)
Can anyone give personal accounts regarding ride quality difference between large Atlantis 66cm+ vs. a 62cm Hunq vs. A 64cm Bomb. Looking for the best touring bike for myself. I am 6'7" 235lbs. PBH 95.5, saddle height 85. I have a 71cm non lugged Nobilette custom road bike and a NOS 64cm powdercoated Riv Protovelo frame by Nobilette one of which I will likely sell to help fund my winter build. Here's a great article on bike camping from the SF Chronicle from a few years back. Mentions some local places (Angel Island and Half Moon Bay beach camping). Bonus: an interview with GP and bike-camping related Riv talk: http://tinyurl.com/ybn38k3 Note that China Camp actually only costs $3 (maybe $6) if you are on a bike. Hi Jordan. How many nights are you planning and what type of distance would you like to do each day? A ride around the entire bay won't take too many days. [RBW] Re: Bomb(s)
That's great Patrick.thanks for posting them. I can see the difference between the Fargo and the Bombadil clearly, as the Bomba's chainstays are round, thick and unmodified. The Fargo suits pure mtb cranks, though I see for 2011 they're using FSA Comet cranks in a 27/40T. Good luck with replacement rings on that one ! http://salsacycles.com/bikes/fargo/fargo_2011_complete/ How did you post the photos, I've wanted to, but thought we could not. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Considering a solo tour around the SF and San Pablo Bay. Looking for tips
I've never done a self-supported tour and I'm considering this as my first. I'd like to ride around the entire bay on my atlantis and stay as often as possible at campsites. I'm looking for tips, especially in terms of route, campsites, and how long I should plan for the trip to take. Gear suggestions welcome as well since the weather will be pretty cool, but I feel pretty comfortable preparing for it. Thank you! Re: [RBW] Re: Fall change of pace
FWIW, if you let your min spir sit quietly in a jar for half an hour, all of the ugly sludge settles to the bottom and then you can (if your hands are steady) pour the cleanish stuff off into another jar, leaving said sludge behind (and worry about how you can get the ugly sludge out of the first jar). What *I* do is use a large coffee can (from cheap coffee I wouldn't condescend to *drink*) for swishing large, dirty parts about in, and then decant the leftover essence into a mayo jar for safekeeping once the sludge has settled. Then I can wipe out the ugly sludge with a rag or paper towel thus incurring just as much work but very slightly less expense and time than filtering the stuff through a coffee filter (anyway, I use a press for my coffee). (Actually, what *I* do is wax my chains, but the immediately forgoing is what I'd do if I bothered to clean my chains first, and what in fact I used to do before I became wax enlightened.) [RBW] Re: Fall change of pace
Sending the dirty mineral spirits through a coffee filter has always worked pretty well for me, too. It filters out all of the clumps of sludge and grit pretty well. The only other thing that I have found that works better than mineral spirits is gasoline, but there's a lot of bad stuff involved that makes it not worth using (smell, fumes, disposal, exploding, etc.); I think the main reason it works so well is what you said about the whole evaporation deal. Another not on mineral spirits; it dries out your hands very badly if you have a lot of contact with it. It also breaks down latex, so wearing surgical gloves is no good. The gloves become really saggy and combersome if you try to use them; not sure about non-latex. Just put some bag balm on you hands after using it and you should be good. Patrick, do you have any photos of the Fargo's BB/chainstay area? I'm curious how they get the extra clearance for fatter tires, are the stays dimpled or something? Now that you mention it it would be nice to be able to use the huge fenders with wider tires. I'm limited to P50 fenders on the Bombadil, Cascadia 29'ers won't fit the fork. Re: [RBW] Re: Bomb(s)
Personally, I'd trade my Fargo right away for a Riv that could do all that I want the Fargo to do (ie, loaded touring and -- with fat wheelset) sandy trail riding with fenders, which means room for 65 mm tires + fenders + mud room) AND that has a road bike like fit, which the Fargo has -- 57 cm effective tt on my M. But the Fargo takes the fat tires with huge clearances to spare and the price was too good to pass up -- sub $1K for frame, parts, wheels, etc etc etc. I call it my Surrogate Rivendell or SurRiv for short. [RBW] Re: :) The end is near!
I recently purchased a number of "newly produced" Shimano 6 & 7 speed freewheels from my LBS. The six speed FW on my Atlantis is working very well so far. The only odd thing about them was the white "Shimano" lettering on the large cog. The change from 7 speeds to 6 was almost not noticable. They were about $20 each. Perhaps I should burry a horde in the backyard Angus On Oct 21, 7:02 pm, Thomas Lynn Skean wrote: > Yes, fellow cyclists. The time approaches. The rumors have begun, of > course. [RBW] Re: Fall change of pace
Yes. When I use the parks chain cleaner that I have I always use mineral spirits. That's what works best.Mineral spirits will evaporate off of the chain, whereas all other cleaners need to be washed off, otherwise they will be removing the new lube too. So how do you wash a chain in soap and water if its on the bike? Secondly the mineral spirits simply out performs other cleaning agents, which are fine for all the other jobs on the bike but less than great on this, the dirtiest part. After using the spirits I pour it off into a container and cover it tightly. The grit sinks to the bottom and I can reuse the spirits many times. michael On Oct 22, 12:05 pm, Bruce wrote: > The care package from Nashbar came in yesterday and last night after work I > got > to work on some bike projects. "What you identify with is all to do with content; whereas the unconscious compulsion to identify is structural. It is one of the most basic ways in which the egoic mind operates. Paradoxically, what keeps the so called consumer society going is the fact that trying to find yourself through things doesn't work: The ego satisfaction is short lived and so you keep looking for more, keep buying, keep consuming. ... No ego can last for long without the need for more. Therefore, wanting keeps the ego alive much more than having. The ego wants to want more than it wants to have. And so the shallow satisfaction of having is always replaced by more wanting. This is the psychological need for more, that is to say, more things to identify with. It is an addictive need, not an authentic one." Eckhardt Tolle. The New Earth. pp 36 & 46. Michael On Oct 21, 8:02 pm, Thomas Lynn Skean wrote: > Yes, fellow cyclists. The time approaches. [RBW] Fall change of pace
The care package from Nashbar came in yesterday and last night after work I got to work on some bike projects. After trying to convince myself that I liked an Ultegra 53/39 double on the Ram, I put the original RBW issue BB and Sugino triple (along with the 105 triple der) back on the bike. I had mis laid the crank bolts and ended up having to buy replacements. So now the lost one s will surely appear, right? While the Sugino was off the bike, I replaced the ring bolts with non rusting (and LIGHTER!) alloy units, and swapped out the stock 48 for a (heavier, ugh) 50 outer ring. I'll ride this weekend and decide if I can tell a difference and whether I like it. I'm pretty sure I'll look to re-home the Ultegra set though, regardless. I have a V-O BB on the shelf, but the original Shimano unit spun more smoothly in hand, so it went back in. I also stripped the racks and fenders off the Saluki for the 1st time since I've owned the bike. Two years of Alabama summer swelter have drenched the honjos in salty sweat and they need serious cleaning, which is a lot easier to accomplish when they are off the bike. As it happens, I really like the stripped down look of the bike. With the Paul Neo-Retro brakes and GB Ourson tires, it has quite the fire road, almost CX manner to it. I can't wait to go find some adventurous dirt trail to check it out in. I have a chain cleaner gizmo that has never seen use, and a can of mineral spirits that my wife bought for a project, but which has also never seen use. Anyone ever use the one in the other to clean chains?
