[RBW] Re: Looking for a 57 or 55cm Bleriot...

2011-05-23 Thread jeffrey kane
Hey guys,

I hope whichever of you are looking to switch sizes figures it out ...
I just wanted to toss in that I'm looking for a 55 Bleriot myself ...
nothing to trade unless somebody wants a 54 Velo Orange Polyvalent
once I replace it.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

In a perfect world you, Scott, would get a 55 on loan, put on your

the bike fitting, and lay down a hundred or so miles on it.  By then
you'll know if it's right.  And if you try a 53 you should be mindful
 that a too-long stem with a too-short top tube doesn't make a perfect
fit.  If you find the right 53 or 55 and are looking at a buy instead
of a swap, I'm still game for your 59.

The 57 won't work, the 55 will and would now like to up the ante of
possibility by adding: any chance someone has a 53cm Bleriot frameset
that they want to sell or trade?

Seems the 53 would be optimal and the 55 very doable.

So any 53 owners out there?

Please email me and let's talk (I'll wait a few days and if no dice,

Re: [RBW] Torque Spec's

2011-05-23 Thread Ken Freeman
If you go to the Park Tools website at this link
http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/torque-specifications-and-concepts
http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/torque-specifications-and-conceptsthere
is a table of torque specifications. It doesn't specifically address Nitto
stems, but it can be a useful guideline.

Here's another that does not address Nitto, but it does list forged stems:
http://www.bike-manual.com/brands/bontrager/om/BT/torque_specifications.htm

Then there's this old one from the rec.tech.bicycles faq,
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/bicycles-faq/part2/section-31.html
which is probably the oldest. I've used it since the mid-'80s, so I'd
figure it applies. I have certainly used it on Cinelli and Tech Deluxe
stems, so it does not get you into trouble.

Have you checked on the Nitto website?

I don't go with the philosophy that I'm such a good mechanic that I can just
feel it. I know from experience that in recent years I cannot, and some
irreplaceble bolts on expensive parts have been wrecked. It puts a crimp in
your riding schedule. I'd much rather just get the bike put together
reliably - so it won't loosen and it won't break. Correct torque specs are
intended to get you into that ballpark.

Can anyone furnish me with a link, or otherwise inform me what the

Hi Mike. I just re-read your post and wanted follow up regarding the
outermost retaining nut. When you're re-assembling the outer bearings,
you cap them with the bearing cone, slotted washer, and outermost
retaining nut in that order (from the bearings out to the dust cap).
Here's a pic:

I screw down the bearing cone until I can feel some friction when

tightened securely.

I just wanted to make sure I communicated that correctly as I may not

 - Velo-Orange hammered fenders
 - Col de Vie tires
 - No saddle
 - Grip King pedals

[RBW] Re: V.O City/Touring Pedal Vs. Gripking

2011-05-23 Thread Lee
Sorry for dragging this out, everyone. I just remembered to mention
that when you are tightening the bearing cone, you want to position it
so that it doesn't cause friction. However, you don't want it loose to
the point where there is play along the axle. If it's too loose, the
pedal cage will jiggle along the axle. Note, too, that when you
tighten the retaining nut, the bearing cone may tighten just a bit
more. So, it's a little process of finding the right position for the
bearing cone so that when you tighten the retaining nut, you don't
feel friction, and the pedal doesn't have any play along the axle.

Whew. Okay, I'm done on this, I promise :)

Dear Forum Friends,

The time has come to sell my Rivendell custom. I thought I would start

I haven't ridden it much in the 10 years I've had it. I'm not a racer,

the original owner.

The bike is fast, light, and handles great.

The frame was built by the legendary Joe Starck, and painted by the
equally legendary Joe Bell in 2001.

The frame size is 63.5cm, center-to-top, with a stand-over of 87cm.

The top tube is 58cm, measured center-to-center. The chain stays are

There are some pictures, and additional specs, here on Flickr:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/33786397@N03/sets/72157626664003365/

From Solvang, it's a 46 mile loop out Happy Canyon, up Mt Figueora and
back down to Los Olivos and return to Solvang. My buddy Norm's
computer keeps track of elevation gain had 4,400' at the summit.
It's really high quality riding. There is one stretch for a couple of
miles that's dirt but it's well maintained. We were passed by a group
on carbon race bikes. The lead guy caught me as I was puttering along
on the dirt and was quite friendly. They had their own support car
following them. The Atlantis with it's really low gearing was perfect
for the climbs and I wouldn't have wanted to do the descents without
great brakes. We took about 5-1/2 hours to do it and the people at Dr
J's bike shop in Solvang quoted some sub 3 hour times for training
rides.

add at least another K to the price tag.

[RBW] Decision Potential

2011-05-23 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Hi!

I've an important decision to make: 62cm Hunqapillar or a (second) 60cm
Hillborne?

At least, I *may* have that decision to make. No amount of measuring will
actually let me *know* if I can actually straddle the Hunqapillar. I have a
nominal 90cm PBH. All the other numbers seem reasonable to me. So it is
*possible* that I *might* be comfortable on one. I don't know.

So... if there's a 62cm Hunqapillar owner in the Chicago area (generously
defined) who'd be willing to let me throw a leg over their Hunqapillar, I would
greatly appreciate it. I wouldn't need the wheels to roll, let alone to
actually ride it. Just to straddle it to see where the top tube lives.

It'd be fantastic if it proved appropriate. But it'd still be great to *know*
if it didn't. It would eliminate any down-the-road missed-opportunity regrets.

Much as I love love love my Hillborne, I do feel slightly odd about buying two
identical bikes. And I don't dismiss the allure of the Fatter Tire and Rougher
Trail and Even Heavier Load.

Please e-mail me offline if you're willing to let me check it out. I'll come
directly to you or meet you anywhere neutral and convenient for you. We could
arrange it with all the notice you need. Obviously, weekends or evenings would
be great but I'm willing to consider pretty much any time. I'm hoping (but not
committed to) make my choice (if I actually have one) in July. But I'm flexible.

Thanks for reading, let alone considering, my request!

And feel free to fill this thread online with opinions/insights/experiences
of having two identical bikes or multiple RBW bikes or comparisons/contrasts
between Hillborne-like and Hunqapillar-like bikes. I'm interested.

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean
P. S. Would t'were we all had such problems!

[RBW] Re: Decision Potential

2011-05-23 Thread newenglandbike
How 'bout a 60cm Bombadil?If not, and you can't find a local
Hunqapillar to try, consider that 2cm is not much difference at
all. But, one test would be to straddle your SH, grab the bars in
one hand and the seat in the other, and lift; then have someone take
a look at how high the wheels come off the ground. If you have an
inch or two of clearance, the HP should work.

Anyway good luck with the choices.

I always enjoy it but I've saved myself so many trips to the bike shop
and understand my bikes and their/my needs a lot better. I was talking

I'll tackle that. I've been putting it off for too long.

[RBW] Inquiry re Sagging Selle AnAtomica

2011-05-23 Thread reynoldslugs
After just a few rides on a brand-new Selle Anatomica, it looks like
our old mule (Gladys) with a deeply swayed back. The manufacturer's
website seems to say, don't worry about the way this looks, just
tighten it up a bit at a time until it's comfortable.

I'm willing to follow the manufacturer's advice, but i'm pretty
certain I've never seen a leather saddle sag and splay like this
anytime in the last 30+ years of riding Ideales and Brooks. Moreover,
I have what is supposed to be the identical saddle (different color)
on my Roadeo, and have not had any sagging at all.

Anyone else experience this with the Anatomicas, or have words of
advice/wisdom?

FWIW, I'm a Clyde and this is their Clyde model, ostensibly.

thanks.

(for me) to (have you) set up the same frame for different purposes.
One smooth road, one roughstuff.

So... if there's a 62cm Hunqapillar owner in the Chicago area (generously
defined) who'd be willing to let me throw a leg over their Hunqapillar, I
would greatly appreciate it.

Much as I love love love my Hillborne, I do feel slightly odd about buying
two identical bikes. And I don't dismiss the allure of the Fatter Tire and
Rougher Trail and Even Heavier Load.

Please e-mail me offline if you're willing to let me check it out. I'll come
directly to you or meet you anywhere neutral and convenient for you. We could
arrange it with all the notice you need. Obviously, weekends or evenings
would be great but I'm willing to consider pretty much any time. I'm hoping
(but not committed to) make my choice (if I actually have one) in July. But
 I'm flexible.

[RBW] Re: Inquiry re Sagging Selle AnAtomica

2011-05-23 Thread Jim M.
My S.A. stretched over 3 months of riding until I had the tension bolt
extended to its maximum, at which point it stabilized. (I weigh 220
fwiw). It's certainly thinner leather than any Brooks or Ideale I've
seen. I'm amazed that you have one that hasn't stretched. My
experience is typical from every S.A. rider I know.

After just a few rides on a brand-new Selle Anatomica, it looks like
our old mule (Gladys) with a deeply swayed back.  The manufacturer's

tighten it up a bit at a time until it's comfortable.

FWIW, I'm a Clyde and this is their Clyde model, ostensibly.

 thanks.

Don't forget the late, great Sheldon Brown's info pages, still hosted
on Harris Cyclery's website. I use that resource way more than the
Park Tool site.

I like Zinn's road bike maintenance book. Get this along with the Park book
and you should be good.

After a year of subscribing to this group I've decided to address some
of my inadequacies head on and do some, if not most of my own

buy the tools, and I figure if I can build a fly rod or tie a classic
Atlantic salmon fly (which I can do, and do well), I can adjust a
hub. Besides, you all inspire me. Thank you.

That said, I do need a good reference manual. I'm interested to see
if there's a consensus amongst the tribe as to a solid reference for
maintaining my Sam (nom de guerre: Ramble-Rounder).
