3 or 4 require the pole to be more like 2.5 feet away from a wall instead

Please respond off list if appropriate

[RBW] Re: Market Prices for Riv Frames

2011-06-16 Thread Joe Bernard
I'd love to score a Bleriot, for completely shallow reasons: It's my
favorite Riv name/graphics package. I don't know the story of them
being pulled from the market, and didn't realize they disappeared
quickly (I was in recumbent world the last three years).

About the mythical Legolas: I was at Rivendell a few years ago, cash

pricing on the Ram we are discussing, but of course the final sale
price will determine that (if we ever find out.)  I'm also amazed by
the high asking prices for some older bikes on CL.  It may seem
reasonable to the seller that if a $700 (when new) bike is like new,
it should be worth $400 now.  They don't realize that the technology
has moved on so much in 10, 15 or 20 years, that their bike is pretty
much obsolete to most buyers.  I guess the fixed-gear/single-speed
trend has been a boon to those selling older steel bikes.  I'm just
glad that I bought my Bleriot when I did, for what I paid.  Steve

because it's kind of interesting.  Someone on the other thread implied
that it's not reasonable to compare the asking price of a used frame
to the price of a new frame, esp. if it's a different model.  I
disagree.  Long ago I had a job processing claims.  The principles
apply, I argue.  To use my own example, you can't buy a new Bleriot.
If you want a new Riv frame that's close to a Bleriot in geometry and
function, you buy a Sam.  Back when they were sold, Bleriots cost $750
(such a deal!).  Today new Sams cost $1100 (?) or $1500, and that is a
whole other discussion in itself.  In my size (small), they cost
$1500.  So when I paid more than the original cost for my pristine
Bleriot frame/fork, was I foolish?  I don't think so.  Riv frames in
my size on the used market are not available all that often.  So the
other part of this equation is depreciation: the word that insurance
companies love and claimants hate.  I think you have to agree that
most things, Riv frames included, depreciate.  If you'd rather have a
new frame out of the box from Walnut Creek than a used frame from Joe
on eBay, that's depreciation.  If the used frame has some paint
chipping around the dropouts, that's.you get the picture.  We can
argue about how much to depreciate a Riv frame, or anything else.  I
wouldn't depreciate it down to 25% after say 10 years, like some
claims payers might.  So to wrap this up, my point is that it's
reasonable to look at the price of a comparable new frame (bike),
decide what kind of depreciation to apply to the used bike in
question, and go from there.  And of course the buyers emotions and
wants play into this a good bit.  I would have rather had an orange
Sam with Hillborne graphics than the blue Bleriot.  But it just wasn't
worth nearly double the price to me.  Cheers, Steve

I suppose I should reply here, as it might very well be me that was
implying that it's not quite appropriate to do a direct price
comparison between a discontinued used model and a new current model.

And, I should go ahead and say, anything I say isn't meant to offend,
  is simply my perspective, YMMV.

I will agree, if you want to have insurance replace a bike with a very
comparable brand/model, then sure, you can insure it for a declared
amount to make sure that if stolen, you could go and replace it (ie,
replace a Rambouillet with a Roadeo).  That would be a $1600 frame,
being replaced with a $2000 frame.

And, I love my Rambouillet, it's an awesome bike.  I really would like
to think that, it'd be reasonable to expect that an insurance company
would replace it with a brand new Roadeo if anything ever happened to
it.   And if I had an Atlantis that was a year or two old, maybe it'd
not be too unreasonable to argue with insurance that they could just
buy a new one to replace it.

But, realistically, as soon as you drive a car off a lot, it's a used
car.  A few years later, once a company has replaced it with a new
model, if I went to sell it, I wouldn't expect to set its price
directly compared to a new car, I have to look at the price for which
used ones of its same year are selling, regardless of the new model
being the one that's most like it.

  I had a Subaru,

Re: [RBW] Re: OT: Bike Storage

2011-06-16 Thread Marc Nolte
I have tried a variety of ways to store my bikes, yet keep them accessible for
use.

I have the rubber coated - Homer Depot type hooks in the ceiling.
I have the rubber coated - bike shop type J hooks on the wall.
I have the block-and-tackle type ( harder to install ) on the ceiling
for both 2 bikes and the ski box for my car.
I find I like systems that use the wheel of the bike ( the first 2 types ),
rather than the block-and-tackle as the hooks tend to interfere with
devices I have installed on the handlebars.

All of these systems work, it depends on if you ( and your SO ) are able to
lift your loaded bikes up and onto the hooks comfortably.

Just FYI, I also live in an apartment, and just hang my bikes on hooks
that I screwed into the ceiling. They were maybe $2 each
 from Home
Depot, covered in rubber. I am pretty tall and am able to
 reach the
bike up to hang it on the hooks.

Works for me, and haven't had any problems with wheels bending or

Re: [RBW] Re: Market Prices for Riv Frames

2011-06-16 Thread David Sprunger
This is an interesting thread.

One aspect not yet discussed concerns the economics of being an early
adapter.  For example, I bought a first-generation Atlantis when the
frame was about $900.  I rode it hard and was able to sell it later
for about what I paid, not so much because the frame had appreciated
but because a new frame had about doubled in price.  I went on to buy
a Bombadil when the pre-release price was $1400. The current price is
now $2500.  (This example is perhaps not as parallel because my 60 cm
frame has the double tube whereas the current models have the diagonal
tube).  As others have pointed out, interest in the Quickbeam remains
high, so one imagines that those who bought the SimpleOne at its
introductory price will find that those frames hold their value well.

There was a Rivendell Mountain early on.  I've seen a couple images, and we
had a thread or two about them a while back, but never seen one in the
 steel.

I'm hoping there's some really odd lens distortion happening on that fork,
because otherwise, it looks kind of off - I am trying to compensate for
the early, less-curvy fork bend which does appear in this image:

Anyone near enough College Park Cycles to snap another image or two?

[RBW] Re: OT: Bike Storage

2011-06-16 Thread William
I have tall ceilings in my garage, and had both a bike storage and a
camping equipment storage problem to solve. I built this 4' x 8'
shelf hanging from the rafters, anchored from the wall, 7'6 high.
All the camping gear goes on top, and nine bike hooks hang below. So
far I'm very pleased with the solution.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/5670500098/in/set-72157626609195222/

It took about 2-1/2 hours to build.

old inner tube under some extra bar tape  or twine (un-shellacked) right

No reason your bike storage shouldn't be as Riv-ish as your bike!

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell MTB? Rare Sighting

2011-06-16 Thread Bruce Baker
Here is the spiel from Larry on this bike for those of you interested

If not, this its a rare riv mady in wisconsin by Waterford
 most were Japan and Taiwan.

Because we are willing and able to swap components to accommodate special
needs and even lower levels of investment, pricing is flexible

If the decision is price based, figure we can get it out for as little as
 $2700
as it is now, it's a $4200 bike and listed at $3700.

If you can appreciate a great opportunity and are a little impulsive, we are
closing in on the end of the first half of 2011 and the end of a fiscal year
and whatever we can show as sold is a help according to the accountants.
Get us just a small deposit by then and we'll pass on a $250 subsidy
Pay for it by then and we'll double it to $500
there's a very small cosmetic dimple (no paint loss) and we will try to post
a photo on the listing.the depth is about ma mm and the area about 2mmx6mm
overall
We have other Rivendells for less and similar 26 bikes like this (both US
and import) for a fraction of the price in case you are more interested in a
rider than a collectible rider.
One thing on which many of our aficionados agree:
if you are planning to ride and enjoy such a gem for the years, even
decades, it will serve you, the difference between the 'get by' bike and the
'wanna have' is usually as little as pennies a week.
and the nicer bikes work better, longer, and hold value and even appreciate
in value better.

I especially liked the last two statements:

Stopping can be as much fun as riding.

Lots of people worked their asses off to build whatever you’re riding

And I would add, I am mostly likely to respond positively to posts
which are statements of personal experience and avoid categorical

Thanks for the note, Bill. I haven't been able to ride as much this year as I
would normally get to. I'm a private practice mental health therapist and I
own my own business. Business is very, very good. . . but that's not good for
my riding. I'm hoping to do better in the second half of the year. I have so
enjoyed your bike, though. It is just the sweetest of rides. I have it set up
pretty comfy except for the handlebars, really, but it is so nimble that I just
know that it would be a hoot on the single track. I love all of my bikes, but
this bike is a special piece of history that is truly fun to ride. I hope you
are well and riding. Keep in touch. david

[RBW] Surly's Tips for Happy Riding?

2011-06-16 Thread Mike
I really like today's post on the Surly Blog (http://surlybikes.com/
blog/2514/). Seems to be in the same vein as Grant's Tips for Happy
Riding. Some of my favorites from the Surly post:

Hey, little round glasses pocket protector collared shirt skid lid
rear view mirror sandal wearing schwalbe marathon running pletscher
two-leg kickstand tourist – good job.

Your handlebars can be lower than your saddle, even with your saddle,
or higher than your saddle. Whichever way you like it is right.

Touch up paint always looks like shit. Often it looks worse than the
scratch.

The moral of RAGBRAI is that families and drunken boobs can have fun
on the same route, just maybe at different times of day.

Nice! With what I've invested in my newish Herse, I could have bought 2 S1

BTW, I hope you sell these:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Landrovers2a.jpg

They are on my short list of exotic and collectible cars, right after this,
which God willing I'll pick up next week from the
 mechanic:https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2ik=82c9f4ca52view=attth=1307...

That is RS Watson of this list who basically just gave it to me: thanks
 again!

  Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to share my New SimpleOne with Y'all. I read all the

ago and I don't plan to stop. I cant thank Rivendell enough for
opening my eyes to there style of riding and riding philosophy, not to
  mention the Paleo Diet.

I work in Walnut Creek and sell Jaguars and Land Rovers right across
the street from RBWHQ. I am always comparing there bikes to Range
Rovers when people ask me about them. They are always super smooth on
the road and very functional off road as well. It seems they go hand
in hand with what Range Rovers are known for, not to mention the
beauty, refinement and style of there bikes.

About 8 years ago I broke 9 bones in my back from a Snow Saucer
accident. I thought my days of physical activity were over and that I
would have to live with pain and soreness for the rest of my life.
Well 7 years went by, I gained 60 lbs and then I discovered bicycling
again and the Paleo Diet. I purchased a used Sam from a member off
this list and I have been riding ever since. With the handlebars high
and relaxed geometry it is the best anecdote for my back pain and
soreness. So now I have lost almost 50 lbs, my back pain is gone and I
plan to be riding for many miles ahead.

A million Thanks to everyone and I look forward to many years of
  cycling in my future.

  Cheers!

[RBW] Hand pin-striping

2011-06-16 Thread Allan in Portland
IIRC, Grant wrote in a Reader some number of years ago about hand-
built items being able to have their own unique beauty because of,
rather than in-spite of, the small imperfections that marked them as
obviously hand-built. Or, at least, that one shouldn't hold it against
handmade items when they don't come out looking perfect in the way
items that are extruded and stamped from a $5 million dollar cookie
cutter machine do. I believe one of the examples he gave was pin
striping which showed the brush lifting and returning when peered at
under 'the-hairy-eyeball'.

Well, for those that remember that column, today I happened upon a
video of a guy doing hand pin-striping on a motorcycle tank and
thought I'd pass it along:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embeddedv=UsTIMxeO_ng

Be sure to watch the end. Trust me, you'll know why when you get
there.

Regards,
-Allan

[RBW] Re: A Simple Moustache.......

2011-06-16 Thread charlie
Great looking set up.I entertained the idea of mustache bars too.
I may have to use my Carradice Nelson and finish building my spartan
rack for it. Love my Simple One.just wish I had more time to ride
although I may just make the 25 mile commute tomorrow.
