Have to say, that's the way I prefer it. Think they still call it
credit card touring. Not looking to set any mileage records, but just
like the feel of the unencumbered bike.

The most experienced bicycle tourist I know has logged hundreds of thousands
of miles in various exotic places and crossing this continent many times.
His touring bikes are more Rambouillet than Atlantis, and he doesn't camp,
cook, or ride in bad weather. He crosses the country with a load similar to
what I carry on my daily rides that don't leave town. For him, logging time
and miles on the bike is the most important thing. For me, cooking really
good food and coffee is a priority - it's likely that I spend more time
grocery shopping, cooking, and eating than I do riding (ok, that's a
 stretch, but not far off).

rat hole I should delete but won't.. so ignore it or get it but don't argue
it with me on this thread please... see I even used the word please.

I've traveled with 4 full panniers and a trailer hauling a plastic bike and
the average speed didn't change much from just going without the trailer and
bike. Same arguments made for bigger tires... comfort..

I want comfort on the road.. extra shoes in case one pair gets wet. larger
tent for getting all my gear inside or repacking or long days of torrential
 storms.

I want clothing that covers the 90 degree day I had today and the rainy
cold 40 degree (feeling like 20) day I'm going to end up with tomorrow.

I carry more weight on a century ride than some of you do for cross
 country.

I don't care how little you carry or what you might be able to do without..
it's not a challenge .. just pack what you think you want. If you don't
want to carry it a day or two in stop at UPS and send some home. My only
point is that you don't have to worry about weight so much.. it's not that
big of a deal in most situations.
Ya I know for every rule ... there is the exception.. exemptions to the
rule does not make the rule invalid.

So make fun of the heavy haulers all you want... I'm a proud one and want
you potential bike tourers to know it's ok and not a bad thing to go
prepared and comfy. (insert heavy and comfy instead of prepared and avoid
 conflict)

So here are some touring photos

[RBW] S24O Packing securing load

2011-09-23 Thread opa...@gmail.com
I'm looking for how-to tips, tricks, guide, (good pictures would be very
helpful) for packing and securing a S24O load on my Riv. I've tried to make
out details from the tiny pictures on Riv's site but they simply aren't
close-up enough. I have an Atlantis, front Wald basket, rear IRC rack, and
a Carradice Nelson longflap. Plan on carrying sleeping pad bag, small
tent, usual accoutrements for a one night outing. No, I don't have anyone
nearby that does S240's or, touring, for that matter, to learn from. I
discovered quickly that while I can pack a car tight tidy for a vacation,
loading a bike up is another matter. For instance, if I move the tent to
just behind the seat on the rear rack, and then put the Carradice bag behind
it (for easy access) - how do I attach the bag to the rack? (it normally
attaches to the seat)..for that matter what is the standard way to secure
big stuff to the rack when not using panniers? Bungee cords?...3/8 braided
rope?...giant velcro strips? By the way I'm looking for neat, simple ways,
not massive ugly knots etc.

Cheers,

[RBW] S24O Packing securing load

2011-09-23 Thread Stephen S
I am packing for an s24o this weekend for he first time and what worked for me
is to still attach the bag normally but not run the closing straps through both
sides of the buckle. Basically, just enough to close them and have the metal
bit go into the hole. Then have the tent strapped behind the bag. I am still
able to get in the bag and it is still closed but it definitely isn't as easy
to get in. I have my sleeping pad strapped around the tent and it is pretty
stable.

I would suggest your main thoughts on packing should be about making it stable
as the primary goal and convenient for the things you have to have convenient.
Btw, I think most folks use a handlebar bag for he stuff they want access to on
the road. I was planning to have some clothes and my cooking stuff in the
saddlebag.

I haven't done much more than a ride to work with my setup. Hopefully others on
the list will respond with sage advice.

[RBW] Re: S24O Packing securing load

2011-09-23 Thread Minh

Robert,

Maybe you're overthinking this, but bungees are fine for securing to
the rack. It sounds like the problem you have is that you cannot put
something on top of the rear rack and attach the saddle sack.
Depending on the sleeping pad (or is it the tent) you can mount that
on the under-side of the top-tube or bungee it crosswise on top of the
basket. There are just a lot of options, you just need to play around
with it, there is no right way other then making sure it's secure
while riding. If you have the clearance up front you could use the
saddle-sack as a handle-bar bag.

Here's a picture of my last S240, i have panniers, but what i have in
the panniers you could carry in your saddle-sack and front basket.
What i have in the long roll on top of the rear-rack is the sleeping
pad, inside the sleeping pad are the poles to my tent.

In the panniers i have, sleeping bag, tent (2 person, no rainfly on
this trip), tent foot-print, 2-20oz bottles of water, change of
clothes (camp pants, lite jacket, change of socks, shirt), bike repair
kit (multi-tool, pump, tubes, patches), food (sandwiches, trailmix,
etc).

hard to see is on the front rack i have trunk-sack for food, wallet,
keys, things i need to get at easily. i could easily get by without
this but it's more convienent.

That's the beauty of an S24O. If you try a load configuration and it is
less than perfect, then you know for next time to try something different.
Bring a few extra bungees, or Rivendell irish straps or REI webbing with
fastek buckles or a ball of twine and a pocketknife. If anything gets loose
on you, lash it down. Enjoy the learning experience.

Me, I've used the platrack in front for for tent, pad and sleeping bag(s).
Big saddlebag in back for the rest

Need someone who owns a HIllborne who can tell me what the real
standover is on the 56cm. Called Riv and was told that it would be a
bit too big for someone with a 84cm pbh but have heard from other
people that it should be fine with just a few cm clearance. I ride a
58cm raleigh international right now but wanted to move up to
something more sturdy for a bigger guy. I was also thinking of the San
Marcos in 54cm but not sure if that can support 240lbs of my fat ass.
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

[RBW] Re: Mixed-Mode Commuting with AHH

2011-09-23 Thread TSW
This question is always interesting to me- I've wondered it myself.

So the question is, is compression on the rim better than tension
(hook) when not rolling? If you think a bike standing in the corner,
the wheels are bearing approximately half the bike's weight, in
compression. On a hook, it's bearing all the weight, in tension.

And also think that when rolling, it's bearing more than 10x the
bike's weight on both wheels.

Should be more than okay, and experience seems to bear this out.

Actually, to appropriately describe the forces, the bicycle hangs down from
the top of the rim when being ridden. There are some detensioning results
to the forks near the bottom, but the weight is not being held up by the
bottom spokes.

Actual, true vertical deformation of the rim is pretty minimal. (Tires and
spokes are much more elastic) Until you hit a curb or a near-vertical
obstruction.

[RBW] Re: Fitting on the Sam Hillborne

2011-09-23 Thread William
I'm an 87, and I owned a 56 Sam. With Jack Browns I found the standover to
be right at the 83.4 they claim. I can't see a particular reason a true 85
would have a problem with a 56 Sam, especially considering Grant himself ran
a 60 Sam for a while with few complaints or issues besides that it looked
odd. He's an 85, too, if memory serves.

I sold my 56 Sam to help pay for a 58 Atlantis, so I can run even fatter
tires.

I had a 56 Sam.. and I've got an 84.5 pbh.. standover wasn't a problem on the
Sam, and I'm long-waisted so the tt fit was pretty good too (i'm about 5'11).
This was with 40mm Schwalbe Mara Supremes.

For comparison, a 52 Bombadil, 59 Canti-Rom, and a 58 SimpleOne all fit better
than the 56 Sam.

Hi Garth,

I have a 60cm Rambouillet and have shipped it through UPS and on Air France
with this bike box.

http://www.crateworks.com/merchant.mvc?Screen=PRODStore_Code=crateworksProduct_Code=Pro_XLC

The frame just fits lengthwise, such that I have to detach the rear derailer to
have it lay flat. The box has held up and the bike has made the trips just
fine (except when Air France neglected to actually put it on the plane, but
that's another story).

Not sure how the Ram compares to the Bombadil, but this is what I have used.

[RBW] Re: Air Travel With a 60cm. Bombadil ... Or other large and long bikes

2011-09-23 Thread dougP
Garth:

I concur with Jim's suggestion. I've shipped my 58 cm Atlantis quite
a bit. Internationally, of course you need to deal with the airlines
but as noted above, non-US carriers are friendlier than US. There are
also lots of code share flights so for instance Lufthansa may take
your bike, United wants a king's ransom, and it's the same flight.
Check carefully. In the past, some non-US carriers accepted bikes
without boxing, just remove the pedals.

Within the US, no question about shipping ahead via ground. UPS
FedEx are comparable in both price level of service (medicore to
acceptable). I have limited experience with shipping via Amtrak but
it's worth a look. My Atlantis runs around $75 to $90 per trip,
depending on distance the whim of the carrier.

With a large frame, it is easy to exceed the UPS / Fed Ex dimension
limits get into oversize. Currently that is 130 combined girth
plus length (2x width + 2x height + length). The Crateworks box,
Ironcase, Performance, etc, most bike specific boxes are designed to
this limit. I stenciled 11 x 29 x 48 on both sides of my box have
not gotten any size arguments.

Airlines have a differenct measuring method that is I believe a simple
total of length + width + height, but that total may vary depending on
the carrier. Check carefully. Airlines are more concerned about
weight I've run into a 50 lb limit which requires some thinking to
meet. A couple of years ago I used a friend's Crateworks box wound
up with the pedals, cassette chain in my luggage to squeak under the
50 lb limit.

Expect to have to take a lot of stuff off the bike. I remove the RD
as a pre-caution. On my 58 cm, both the mini-front rack and the big
back rack have to come off, h'bars (yey for cable splitters!), the
bottle cages on the DT, seat, it ain't pretty. Allow plenty of time
for packing.

This summer, I boxed my bike for Amtrak it's a huge box. All that's
req'd is remove the pedals and turn the bars. They say nothing else
in the box but the bike. We traveled on the train so we just walked
on with panniers front bags. They have boxes at the station, but
check ahead.

Be careful: once you start traveling with your bike, you won't be
able to leave home without it.

On of the most useful things for packing is the cargo net. Stretchy
cord stuff of some kind, a hook at each corner. For an S24O, 2
panniers hold everything but my comfy, cushy, sleeping pad, that
gets lashed onto the rear rack with the cargo net. Nets are also hand

out details from the tiny pictures on Riv's site but they simply aren't
close-up enough.

  Cheers,
Robert Opalko- Hide quoted text -

This was a standard color for the Riv 650B Mixte.

I've been on the Joe Bell website and I think there are around a dozen
colors called green with a paint chip the size of a stamp.
Frankly, even if the chip were really really big, I would find it hard
to choose a color I hadn't already seen used on a bike. By way of
illustration of my difficulty, the color of green on a Redwood is
close to Gecko Green on a VW Bug. But..you would never ever
know that from looking at the paint chip of Gecko Green online.
So..any and all green Rivendell help will be greatly
appreciated. Actually, if you have pics and codes of other BOBish
bikes, that too would be great.

The blue tape is rim liner. I took off the old liner, cleaned up the
rim a bit and put on the new. Besides being a really nice shade of
blue I figured it's all engineered to work together (and engineers
don't do goofy things).

I even looked around the net a bit before I bought them which led to
their web site which had an installation manual.

Are you interested in riding or just getting together?

I'm thinking that you could borrow a couple of bikes from RBW on Saturday
morning and we could all go for a ride. I wouldn't mind driving over with my
son. After tomorrow's S24O climb in Mt. Diablo, I'll either say never again
or will be eager to bring my son along so he can give it a no-pressure try.
