didn't hit *any* of my goals for last
yearhttp://bigbirdcage.blogspot.com/2011/01/bicycling-hopesdreamsgoals-for-2011.html.

The weather in Seattle was not cooperative, nor was the economy. Spent way
too much time trying to find more work. Maslow's pyramid of needs Well,
my son and I *did* ride on the John Wayne Trail one day. And I did acquire
a repair stand--and wow--I should have done that *years* ago. And an rSogn
frame *was* delivered to my door, though it was sent back because it was
the wrong size.

Hopefully the rSogn, S24Os with the boy, and multi-modal camping trips will
happen this year. I'm going to skip the STP and see about doing a short
tour with my friends on the Oregon Coast instead.

I did ride my Saluki to work almost every day, year 'round. Only an 8-mile
round trip, but a really nice part of my day.

Don't have much in the way of goals for this year. At least bike
related ones.
1. Do an S24O. Time slipped away last year. Hopefully this year.
2. See if I can go a full year without buying and/or selling a bike.
Hoped to do that last year, but didn't work out. At all. Try again.
3. Wag more, bark less. Yeah, not specifically bike related, but I
need to work on being less of a jerk.

Yes, I've never figured out how to save routes the way one could in
Yahoo Maps.

But this is quite cool: you use its smartphone app or a GPS, and it
maps your route, which you can post, share, etc.

http://www.strava.com/rides/my-revenge-x2-at-montezuma-grade-2856587

Notice that you can get avg speed in various segments. I'm guessing
they're crowd-sourced named.

Searching isn't great, it seems. I wonder if it'd be possible to
create a public Riv-ish collection of routes.

Hi René,

No offense intended at all, but I cannot see myself doing that on my bikes.

None taken. Different strokes for different folks. I was having fun
fabricating small parts from old junk in the garage, so there was a
perverse pleasure in this for me. For someone with more metal working
skills and better tools, I imagine nicer brackets could be generated
(and I think I saw reference to commercial offerings at some point).

I'd rather go to a smaller sized tire if needed.

I can honestly say this idea did not occur to me until after I had cut
the fender. Even so, I'm happy with the result.

From pictures I've seen, I can certainly appreciate your fine taste in
bicycles. :-)

Best wishes,

Re: [RBW] Fender Frustration

2012-01-03 Thread Smitty-A-Go-Go
Sam Hill Green

When we went into Riv HQ for test rides the wife wanted an Yves Gomes
because she thought she wanted a black bike. I wouldn't let her pick black
and Vince graciously accepted the challenge to show us frames until she
picked a real color. He bent over backwards to drag out frame after frame
from all over the shop so we could look at colors. A dozen or so frames
into it the wife was still set on black. Vince had an Ah-Ha! moment and
brought out a frame painted 'Sam Hill Green'. As soon as she saw it in the
sun, she knew that that was the color she wanted.

It's a marvelously beautiful color. It's way too nuanced to really be
captured in a photo. Depending on the light it can appear anywhere from a
rich olive to almost silver. It's got sparkly flecks that make the paint
look 3D. And the red tires + silver accessories set it off. It's not nearly
as showy with black/gum tires. I was tempted to get my AHH in the same
color but the wife was clear that we were not going to have matchy-match
bikes.

You can use a HS setup with 8 or 9, as long as the range of the cassette is
wide, like a 13-32, 11-34 or 12-36 .. sumthin' like that. It's just fun to
experiment. Less gears is more that you think.

[RBW] FS a 700C wheelset for your Atlantis/Hillborne/Hunqa/Hilsen/Bomba

2012-01-03 Thread William
I sold my Hillborne, planning to get an Atlantis. As I've posted more than
once, that Atlantis idea is not urgent and is becoming less urgent. My
loaded touring fantasies won't be practical for at least a decade, for
myriad reasons. So, the stuff that I have as Atlantis placeholders are not
so badly needed.

I'm offering for sale to the group the wheelset from my Hillborne. The
rims are 36 hole Bontrager Fairlanes (symmetric front, asymmetric rear).
DT spokes. Current XT rear hub. NOS Specialized sealed bearing front
hub. Silver rims, silver hubs. I rode them maybe 750 miles on my
Hillborne. They were handbuilt by me. I'm not Rich Lesnick experienced
but I am experienced. ~15 years of bike shop work. I probably have not
built 1000 wheels in my life but I probably have built 500.

Anyhow, I think these wheels are substantially nicer than the budget
Synergy 700 wheelset that Riv sells for $250. I'm asking $175 and hoping
for local (East Bay) pickup. If you need them shipped, then I'll ship for
cost.

Let me know off-list if interested.

[RBW] Re: Roadeo or RB1?

2012-01-03 Thread William
Responding to Patricks original post.

I filled that description with a 1984 Trek 770. It features standard
diameter 531 tubing, and takes 28s (Roly-Poly). I bought the complete bike
from the original owner for $600. I then parted out the Campagnolo Super
Record stuff through the regular channels. At the moment my running total
has me owning the frame/fork/headset/saddle/wheelset/handlebar for a total
outlay of $25. It takes 28s and doesn't even hint at racks or fenders,
because it has no brazeons. I'm supremely happy with it. It's got a 2x7
compact double drivetrain on it now, and I will be using it on brevets this
year. I've even got it set up with a decaleur and have ridden it with a
sizeable handlebar bag, despite the guarantees that such a setup is
absolutely unrideable.

As willing as you've demonstrated yourself to be in parting things out, I
think this route could be fruitful for you as well. There are good
geo-charts available for both Trek and Bridgestone online, so you could buy
off craigslist without having to ask a bunch of sizing minutia from your
seller.

I keep a 1992 RB1 at a family vacation home in the midwest as well. No
need for compact double out in the cornfields.

2012-01-03 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Thanks for all the replies, suggestions and offers of various bikes (too
poor for the nonce to buy one). I like the old racing bike idea and,
actually, before I bought the Herse, had thought of priddying up the '73
Motobecane that I in fact sold to Eric Norris of this list -- light, toute
531 leger and nice handling with long stays and nimble front. Which brings
me full circle to the original thread: I rather regret now (20 years after
the fact) selling my 1989, Sante equipped all 531C Falcon: shitty,
Britain-in-industrial-decline paint job and wheels and tasteless Sante
powdercoat, but a nice, long-stayed, short front-center frame that would
have made a very decent gofast with some decent wheels and properly set up.

[RBW] Foggy Morning at the train station on Hunqapillar...

2012-01-03 Thread René Sterental
The first official work day of the year was a very foggy but not too cold
one and I couldn't help myself from capturing the moment as the train
pulled into the Palo Alto station. For some reason it all felt very dreamy,
and I tried to capture that feeling in my photo. For some reason it reminds
me of the Anna Karenina movie I saw as a teenager that had an image of the
train pulling into the train station in the fog while they said good-bye...
or something like that.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/6629315631/

It shows my Hunqapillar still without the Berthoud fenders I'm in the
process of installing so I can ride it when the rains hit us. 50mm Marathon
Dureme tires, 150mm Bullmoose bars with fat Brooks leather grips, front
Pass Stow rack (the Swift Industries black canvas Pelican Porteur rack
should be arriving any day now) and my beloved Berthoud saddle.

I've also grown very fond of the Carradice Longflap Camper and have just
added a new front SON28 Dyad 36 wheel (new SON28 model hub) with its Edelux
light so now I can also commute on the Hunqapillar.

Now I get to debate with myself in the evening if I'm going to commute on
the Atlantis or on the Hunqapillar... the Betty has no lights yet, although
I'm getting a helmet light (sold by RBW) which will make it feasible. When
it gets fenders, then I'll be in a real conundrum... How to choose when you
love them all? At least they don't appear to be jealous of each other!

Happy 2012!!!

None taken. Different strokes for different folks. I was having fun

(and I think I saw reference to commercial offerings at some point).

I'd rather go to a smaller sized tire if needed.

I can honestly say this idea did not occur to me until after I had cut

From pictures I've seen, I can certainly appreciate your fine taste in

Re: [RBW] Fender Frustration

2012-01-03 Thread René Sterental
I have to agree with you. The very first Rivendell bike I saw in person at
a Caltrain station was a green Sam H. and I fell in love with its color. On
my first ever visit to RBW, when I was test riding them and deliberating
between the Homer and the Sam, their different colors were a strong factor
in my internal debate.

In the end I chose the Homer because the test model I rode felt better, but
that green color has always been at the back of my mind waiting for an
excuse to repaint one of my bikes.

The time may come sooner than anticipated, so we'll see...

Congratulate your wife on her beautiful Betty.

I was tempted to get my AHH in the same
color but the wife was clear that we were not going to have matchy-match
 bikes.

Re: [RBW] Foggy Morning at the train station on Hunqapillar...

2012-01-03 Thread Ray Shine
Yes, that was an Acorn saddlebag, but not at all new. In fact, it is Generation
One from Acorn. I have divested myself of nearly all of my Acorn stuff, much
preferring these days the Keven's V-Brand saddlebags. The Swift Industries
stuff is First Rate. I recommend their products very highly. The primary
advantage with the Swift stuff over the RBW V-brand Panniers is that they are
two separate bags as opposed to two bags joined together, which makes for more
versatility in packing and not having to worry over balancing a load, etc.

[RBW] Re: Trail Recommendation Database?

2012-01-03 Thread Bill M.
Strava is tied to GPS recording, and seems a little too oriented to
look how fast I did this climb for my taste. The home page says
Track your progress and compete against friends. Not really the
attitude I expect prevails around this list. I don't need to share my
watt output with the world to share a nice bike route.

Bikely or Map My Ride might work better for route sharing and
searching without a competitive attitude. Both have some tagging
capability, but mixed terrain'' doesn't seem to be a category either
has caught on to.

Gmap-pedometer is a pretty basic tool that allows you to build and
save routes in Google maps without logins or memberships. The route
names are strictly numeric as far as I can tell, which makes searching
them difficult, but they can be shared publicly. Here's one (paved)
route I created as an example:

Notice that you can get avg speed in various segments.  I'm guessing
 they're crowd-sourced named.

Searching isn't great, it seems.  I wonder if it'd be possible to
create a public Riv-ish collection of routes.

OK: That's what I want to hear. Please give reasons -- details: handling,
fit, comfort etc. -- as to why one might want to pay $4K minimum for a
Roadeo compared to half or less for a nice, high end but old road bike like
some of those mentioned.

I love my customs' handling; the handling of the Sam Hill was
disappointing; the Herse fit like my customs but didn't handle quite as
well (tho' that may be due to my preference for higher trail); the '73
Motobecane was lighter, uglier and handled almost as well as the customs
and fit not quite as well. The Falcon would probably have been a
wonderfully fitting and handling bike if I had known (thanks to Grant's
intervention) how to set it up. The Calfees and Treks and RB1s have been
praised for their handling and fit.

So please give details about why the Roadeo is the unquestioned reasonable
choice.

I am not interested in fenders or tires larger than 28, nor am I interested
(for the purposes of this discussion) in fineness of joinery or cosmetic
details. Just fit (or potential for fit) and, above all, handling.

Thanks.

I think the tubing is a tad thicker which for me is good. (.9x.6x.9 as
opposed to .8x.5x.8) I love mine, it rides really nice and the paint
is understated and woodsy lookingperfect for a bicycle. Only $800
for the frame is a swingin deal. This frame can easily be used with a
hub geared wheel or even a deraileur set up with some compromises if
you wanted to do that.

pulled into the Palo Alto station. For some reason it all felt very dreamy,
and I tried to capture that feeling in my photo. For some reason it reminds
me of the Anna Karenina movie I saw as a teenager that had an image of the
train pulling into the train station in the fog while they said good-bye...
 or something like that.

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam vs SimpleOne

2012-01-03 Thread jandrews_nyc
my boss has a 58 Quickbeam. I have a 58 Simpleone. I've ridden both
and feel that I can sort of compare them. I've also worked on his and
built mine up so I've seen a lot up close.
I think Charlie is right in that the Simpleone has very slightly
thicker tubingbut that doesn't really translate to a tangible
difference when riding for me. I'm 150lbs. I THINK my Simpleone
has a slightly more raked fork than the Quickbeam, but I'm not sure.
The Simpleone has fancier lugs than his Orange Quickbeam. They both
seem to have the same geometry to the naked eye. What is tangible for
me are the front fork rack eyelets and the four top-rack eyelets in
the back which not all Quickbeams have. Also tangible for me means
having a kickstand plate which the QB doesn't. Also, someone at Riv
will have to confirm, but it seems from looking at the bikes that tire
clearance is just a bit more on the Simpleone, but I haven't
measured. I have been so happy I purchased the Simpleone. It's set
up as a speedy drop-bar single speed and I love it that way, though
I'm sure I'll turn it into something else at some point, i.e. trail
bike, grocery bike, upright, gearedsince it's so versatile.

For $800 it's a no-brainer.

Great idea. I hate the pea sage green, and love the Hunq paint job.
Maybe my green Atlantis will turn into a gray Atlantis too, at some
point.

He should just buy my Trek (or my RB1) so I can get a Roadeo. :)

Re: [RBW] Quickbeam vs SimpleOne

2012-01-03 Thread Eric Norris
Sturmey Archer hubs come in 120mm spacing, perfect for the Quickbeam. I have an
S3X three-speed fixed hub on mine, and I've run an 8-speed SA hub as well. It's
an easy conversion (once you get the wheel built) that doesn't involve changing
the spacing of the dropouts.

IIRC, the rear spacing is 120mm. I suppose one could spring it to 126 to fit
an old 5 or 6 speed, but I'm not sure that still qualifies as easily.

Well then Patrick maybe you should try the ugly bike fitness forum. I'm sorry
last I looked I was in a Rivendell owners forums where Riv's need not be
defended. Really you think anyone else on here can give you a review of how a
Roadeo will fit you? Do you really think a 20lb bike is too heavy for you 28mm
tires?

Consider your baiting a success.. and thanks for the laugh.. :)

Happy New Year

[RBW] Re: Foggy Morning at the train station on Hunqapillar...

2012-01-03 Thread René Sterental
Funny... I, on the other hand, am not so crazy about that gray but like the
maroon. I've actually been toying with the idea of a Hunqapillar repaint at
some point, but do love the bright Atlantic American paint. It's brighter
than the Japanese painted ones.

It's wonderful that you'll be celebrating your Atlantis' 10th birthday!
