[RBW] FS or trade: Grand Bois Cypres 650Bx32 tires

2012-01-13 Thread NickBull
I bought a 650B wheelset from a friend who is downsizing his bike
collection to what he considers the new optimal number of bikes: One.
So he threw in all of his tires, four Grand Bois Cypres 650Bx32, as
well. I prefer to ride on wider 650B tires, so would like to sell or
trade these.

Two of the GB Cypres 650Bx32 tires are brand-new, still in their
unopened bags.

The other two have been slightly used. One has no signs of wear,
probably a front tire. The other, the fine tread down the centerline
of the tire (4mm wide) is just slightly worn smooth, probably a rear
tire.

New, these would be $64 apiece from Compass Cycles bicycles but bought
as a set of four there would be a $5 per tire discount.

My guess as to a fair price would be: $50 each for the new, $40 for
the front, and $30 for the rear. I'll give you a $15 discount if
you buy all four. Shipping will be actual cost, I have no idea what
that is but doubt that it will be too much different than the $11 that
Compass charges. Of course, local pickup would be fine (DC area).

Or ... I'd consider trades for Grand Bois Hetres, Pacenti Pari-Moto
(prefer the black-wall) or for the Soma B-Line.

Nick

Subject: [RBW] Riv Rally East 2012

OK, it's a new year, and I'm starting to get excited about Riv Rally East 2012.
Here's the quick skinny on this year's plan (so far):

This year I'm planning the 2-day Rally to ride along the Great Allegheny
Passage, from Frostburg, MD to Connellsville, PA.

To get you psyched up, here are a few links:

http://www.atatrail.org/index.cfm
http://www.flickr.com/groups/great_allegheny_passage/

This beautiful stretch of the GAP trail takes you through long mountain
tunnels, over high viaducts, though beautiful country along 2 scenic rivers
(including through the Youghigheny River Gorge). The plan is to converge in
Frostburg, MD on Friday evening, Apr 20th, and ride to Confluence, PA (47 miles
of mostly smooth downhill to the
North) on Saturday, where we will enjoy a nice dinner and comfy bed (although
there is camping nearby for the hardcore). Sunday we will roll into Ohiopyle,
PA, home of the famous Youghigheny Gorge, where we may take an an optional
short excursion out of town to visit the famous Frank Lloyd Wright house,
FallingWater (a trip WELL WORTH taking). We will finish day off in
Connellsville, PA, where I am making arrangements to shuttle ourselves, bike
and gear back to Frostburg. This will be a self-supported, credit card type of
tour, which means that unless you have a buddy, spouse or otherwise hired
person to meet you in Confluence PA on the first evening, you'll need to carry
a change of clothes, toothbrush and other essentials to get you through 2 days
of riding. A small duffle on a rack shoud suffice, or go all out with front
and rear panniers... up to you. Me, I hope to toss a duffle in my big Wald
basket... that's how I like to roll..

I have put out inquiries on shuttles and lodging; more on that shortly.

In the mean time, if you are interested, please let me know. We had a fair
amount of interest early on for the 2011 Rally, but quite a few dropped off. I
hope we can get the same crew from 2011 returning this year, along with a few
of you who couldn't make it last year. To our West Coast buddies, I'll bet we
could get a few loaner bikes if any of you would care to join us... We'd love
to have you.

So mark the calendars, April 20-22.

Peace,
BobbyB

Definitely will be laundry facilities in Glenallen and Cantwell.
Wouldn't be surpassed if there were others along the way.

I don't know if you have time to extend your trip, but a midnight sun
ride on the Denali National Park road from the park entrance to Wonder
Lake would be a fantastic end to your trip.

Have a great trip.

[RBW] Touring Load and Packing list with weights

2012-01-13 Thread Kelly Sleeper
Anne,

You are right..

It's my at my leisure food. In under 5 minutes I can have coffee and food
while waiting out a rain storm or just enjoying a view. That is one thing
that is a must for me. Not to mention the dreaded OH MY GOD YOU COOKED
WHAT?

The amount of clothing I'm taking is excessive at this point.. and will most
likely be cut back to a weeks supply and thus only one day ruined having to do
laundry... hell maybe I could find a dentist to make the day even more
miserable.

My outlook also is more on self .. I'm not comfortable sitting on the side of
the road waiting for another rider / group leader whatever to save me. (not
implying that anyone else does or would) It's nice to have backup if I forget
something, but I'm just used to taking care of myself. Food, tools, parts, and
many things that although carried in many tours have never been used. Weird I
know.

Kelly

It's funny you mention this... Amtrak has been promising (and is so
far a year late in providing) roll-on/roll-off service on the Capitol
Limited train that serves the region. Despite numerous letters and
pressure on Amtrak, they're still supposedly working on it but will no
longer commit to a date.

I'm guessing you had to box up your bike (which you can do from Union
Station in Chicago), but I don't believe we can do this between
Connellsville and Cumberland... there are no baggage services in
Connellsville. It would be GREAT to park at EITHER end and roll on to
the train to transport to/from your car, but it apparently ain't
happenin' just yet.

I was wondering if the roll-on service ever happened... I remember that
being an issue, but boxing the tandem wasn't *too *bad. We used the Amtrak
stations in PGH and WAS to box our bikes. The only extra tool I needed was
a pedal wrench.

When that roll-on service ever starts, it'll only make the trail that much
more amazing. We're going through the same type of Amtrk delays in the
Midwest as far as service to Milwaukee and Western Michigan. Grassroots
campaign are underway.

[RBW] Riv Rally midwest?

2012-01-13 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Just reading about the Riv Rally East in another thread. Jeez, that sounds
fun. I briefly contemplated a trip eastward, but then I thought, why not
just do it here? I know lots of great routes where the attributes of Riv
bikes would shine, both functionally and cosmetically.

I'd be willing to put together a Riv Rally Midwest sometime this upcoming
summer. Most likely it would be somewhere between Minneapolis and Madison
and a 2-day weekend format with camping and hotel options. Also, most
likely there would be ride route options to suit different fitness levels
and adventurousness thresholds (nothing extreme).

Anybody interested?

Yes, they could virtually create a new niche in the cyclo-tourism
industry... Many of us live close enough to some type of mass-transit
hub, where imagine simply rolling on your bike and gear, and getting
plugged into the national train network. Think of how many people
might leave their cars behind when they vacation.

I've enjoyed a small taste of this, between Princeton and Philadelphia
(and I can ride to Princeton by way of canal towpath).. NJ Transit
allows roll-on/off service on weekends and off-hours, as does SEPTA
(Trenton to Philly)... The train cars generally aren't REALLY equipped
to handle bikes, but they still allow it (kudos to NJ Transit and
SEPTA). There are a few double-decker trains on the NJ Transit line
that have an accessible area for wheelchairs and bicycles, if
there's room... This is much improved, although not nearly as nice as
the vertical bike racks found on some mass transit systems. But the
feeling of rolling out of my garage in the AM, riding to the train
over a beautiful route, spending a day in Philly or New York, then
traveling home the same way... what a fun adventure.

What a missed opportunity... shame on AMTRAK.

park to Falling Water is about 3 miles of 300% grade. At least that is how it
seemed the year we tried it on a tandem with the wrong gearing and an out of

OK, it's a new year, and I'm starting to get excited about Riv Rally East

The plan is to converge in
Frostburg, MD on Friday evening, Apr 20th, and ride to Confluence, PA (47
miles of mostly smooth downhill to the
North) on Saturday, where we will enjoy a nice dinner and comfy bed (although
there is camping nearby for the hardcore). Sunday we will roll into
Ohiopyle, PA, home of the famous Youghigheny Gorge, where we may take an an
optional short excursion out of town to visit the famous Frank Lloyd Wright
house, FallingWater (a trip WELL WORTH taking). We will finish day off in
Connellsville, PA, where I am making arrangements to shuttle ourselves, bike
and gear back to Frostburg. This will be a self-supported, credit card type
of tour, which means that unless you have a buddy, spouse or otherwise hired
person to meet you in Confluence PA on the first evening, you'll need to
carry a change of clothes, toothbrush and other essentials to get you through
2 days of riding. A small duffle on a rack shoud suffice, or go all out with
front and rear panniers... up to you. Me, I hope to toss a duffle in my big
Wald basket... that's how I like to roll..

I have put out inquiries on shuttles and lodging; more on that shortly.

In the mean time, if you are interested, please let me know. We had a fair
amount of interest early on for the 2011 Rally, but quite a few dropped off.
I hope we can get the same crew from 2011 returning this year, along with a
few of you who couldn't make it last year. To our West Coast buddies, I'll
bet we could get a few loaner bikes if any of you would care to join us...
 We'd love to have you.

So mark the calendars, April 20-22.

 Peace,
 BobbyB

[RBW] Multiple gear option questions

2012-01-13 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I'm -a gettin' old and I feel the need to coast and even, gawd 'elp us, use
lower gears for climbing. I've even got two derailleur vehicles (Fargo and
trike). But I'm not ready to convert my Rivs to derailleurs and I wonder
what is the best allaround way to get a climbing gear or two -- so your
comments (if polite) will be welcome.

The Fargo is great for dirt and (with skinny 40 mm tires) for
all-roundering, but it is too heavy and sluggish for fast road riding. The
trike is the ideal (for me) errand machine, but it too is too sluggish to
fill the niche of longer distance or faster pavement riding.

One option of course is to buy a nice, old fashion racing bike -- like
the 1989 toute 531C Falcon I wish I hadn't sold 20 years ago. I just had
the option for a perfectly measured (58 c-c X 57 c-c with 9 cm stem)
mid-80s Ciocc, but decided no because of the 40.5 cm chainstays. I could
have refurb'd that '73 Motobecane I sold to Eric. But let's leave a new
bike out of the picture for now.

Another option is simply to bolt on derailleur (rear; don't need front),
rear brake and shifter to my '99 fixed custom -- a very tempting option
since the only expense will be to have a new rear wheel built to accept a
freehub or a freewheel -- and I have the rim and other parts.

Or, I could go hole hawg and get someone local to braze on the bits that
Joe left off.

But -- and this is the option I've thought about off and on for a few years
-- why not just get second rear wheels built up for the two Riv fixies,
with 3 speed hubs with coaster brakes? This would mean that I would not
have to hassle with installing rear brakes and replacing the amputated
left-hand brake levers (currently they are Dura Ace bodies with the levers
proper removed -- in the case of #2 the excess metal has been ground away;
in that of #3, I could just re-install the lever proper and pin).

Note that I don't consider the S3X: first, because a Surley dingle cog will
provide sufficient gap for a fixed drive train at far less expense and
hassle that a new wheel; second because I've heard bad scuttlebutt about
its longevity; third because if I do more than install a Dingle I also want
coasting.

[RBW] Re: Riv Rally East 2012

2012-01-13 Thread Lisa
I rode the CO / GAP from DC to McKeesport with my family this past summer
(2011). It was a great ride. The CO is rough and muddy in spots, but the
GAP has a very nice crushed-stone surface.

I got on some mailing lists (paper, not email) connected with these trails.
From these, my understanding is that the last missing mile of the GAP was
opened in November. That would mean it's now possible to ride all the way
into Pittsburgh (crossing Monongahela on the Hot Metal Bridge!)

The Pittsburgh Amtrak station does have baggage service and bike boxes --
my family used this option to return to DC. Boxing a bike for Amtrak
requires only minimal disassembly (remove pedals and turn handlebars). I
believe that Cumberland also has baggage service. But it would sure be
nice if the roll-on service were ready by summer.

Re: [RBW] Re: Riv Rally East - Falling Water train transportation

2012-01-13 Thread Joan Oppel
I rode the GAP CO a couple of years ago - Pittsburgh to DC to home, a friend and I (me: Bleriot, her: Atlantis). Lots of fun.We rode from Ohiopyle to Falling Water because I'd never seen the house. It was not a difficult climb, long not steep, and with some breaks and definitely worth it. Reservations are needed for the Falling Water tour, and there are specific times. We were there on a weekday in October and had no trouble getting a reservation the same day. But on a weekend, it might be more difficult. Just some details to keep in mind as you plan.Train: we used a shuttle service, much more economical than the train - at least for traveling between DC and Pittsburgh. The way the Amtrak schedule worked would have required a night in a hotel, so the shuttle was cheaper (though it would have been neat to take Amtrak). Here's trail status on the GAP website: http://www.atatrail.org/tmi/status.cfmThat website is a wealth of information, and that's where I found a list of shuttle services.JoanOn 01/13/12, Montclair BobbyBmontclairbob...@gmail.com wrote:Thanks for the warning, Larry... Here's the quick skinny on this year's plan (so far): This year I'm planning the 2-day Rally to ride along the Great Allegheny Passage, from Frostburg, MD to Connellsville, PA. To get you psyched up, here are a few links: http://www.atatrail.org/index.cfm http://www.flickr.com/groups/great_allegheny_passage/ This beautiful stretch of the GAP trail takes you through long mountain tunnels, over high viaducts, though beautiful country along 2 scenic rivers (including through the Youghigheny River Gorge). The plan is to converge in Frostburg, MD on Friday evening, Apr 20th, and ride to Confluence, PA (47 miles of mostly smooth downhill to the North) on Saturday, where we will enjoy a nice dinner and comfy bed (although there is camping nearby for the hardcore). Sunday we will roll into Ohiopyle, PA, home of the famous Youghigheny Gorge, where we may take an an optional short excursion out of town to visit the famous Frank Lloyd Wright house, FallingWater (a trip WELL WORTH taking). We will finish day off in Connellsville, PA, where I am making arrangements to shuttle ourselves, bike and gear back to Frostburg. This will be a self-supported, credit card type of tour, which means that unless you have a buddy, spouse or otherwise hired person to meet you in Confluence PA on the first evening, you'll need to carry a change of clothes, toothbrush and other essentials to get you through 2 days of riding. A small duffle on a rack shoud suffice, or go all out with front and rear panniers... up to you. Me, I hope to toss a duffle in my big Wald basket... that's how I like to roll.. I have put out inquiries on shuttles and lodging; more on that shortly. In the mean time, if you are interested, please let me know. We had a fair amount of interest early on for the 2011 Rally, but quite a few dropped off. I hope we can get the same crew from 2011 returning this year, along with a few of you who couldn't make it last year. Funny: Joan, a riding pal and list member rode there when she did her

big contrast from the way the folks at the motel where I stayed
described the trip, as death to ride.

Chain falls off, end of brake, end of story. You have SS experience

ancient single pivot (80s era) brakes with matching era non-aero

Gearing is around low 40s, 60ish high 70s. The whole thing was sort

what is the best allaround way to get a climbing gear or two -- so your
comments (if polite) will be welcome.

This would mean that I would not
have to hassle with installing rear brakes and replacing the amputated
left-hand brake levers (currently they are Dura Ace bodies with the levers
 proper removed -- in the case of #2 the excess metal has been ground away;
in that of #3, I could just re-install the lever proper and pin).

Note that I don't consider the S3X: first, because a Surley dingle cog will
provide sufficient gap for a fixed drive train at far less expense and
hassle that a new wheel; second because I've heard bad scuttlebutt about
its longevity; third because if I do more than install a Dingle I also want
 coasting.

Re: [RBW] Re: Multiple gear option questions

2012-01-13 Thread Bertin753
Thanks, Doug. I rather like the Idea of an extra wheel set that can go on and
off with little or no requirement for further alterations. I am not concerned
about rear brake failure since the principle purpose of this brake would be to
act as a backup to th front brake. I am more concerned about any additional
drag caused by the coaster brake mechanism.

Now that I think about it, perhaps that new SA kickback hub would suffice...
