Lots of good advice on this-and there are a lot of opinions out there-in

He tells how to calculate your carb and water intake for your specific body

I used a set of Silver DT shifters on a Road Std rebuild. I love how they
work. Downside is how easily they corrode. There is plenty of Summer sweat
falling on that region and the plating on the parts is not up to the task.
I took them apart and scrubbed thoroughly, re-lubed and put back on the
bike. Hope they continue to do well.

Your mod in the pics linked below looks great and would avoid any sweat
issues. Definitely a keeper.

Thanks for the complement, but the cut down and rubberized mod is not mine
at all. That's the way they come when you buy these thumbshifters. My
idea is just to repurpose the levers and the clamps on different bikes.

Now that you mention it, though, I have been doing a lot of sanding and
polishing of aluminum bike parts lately, so I imagine I could make my own
Silver barcons out of a set of downtube shifters, and then dip them in that
blue rubber tool-handle goo. That's a great idea.

Get the boxes down to avoid the next size hit, sign up for your own
account with FedEx and do it from there. Helps reduce the cost.
Drop it at the FedEx terminal. 130 girth is the max.
A package weighing less than 50 lbs. and measuring more than 108
inches but less than 130 inches in combined length and girth will be
classified by FedEx Ground as an Oversize 2 (OS2) package. The
transportation charges for an Oversize 2 (OS2) package will be the
same as a 50-lb. package being transported under the same
circumstances. . An oversize charge of $45 per package will apply to

2. Ride long rides. Centuries are not only fun in and of themselves,

[RBW] Nuance of the rebate system

2012-01-31 Thread William
This is a minor thing, and one that you've probably picked up on, but I
missed it.

If you were eligible you got a rebate. You can use that rebate whenever
you like within 120 days, or it's gone. Moving forward, when you buy
something, you get a rebate credit that you can use within 120 days.
You'll carry a balance, and you choose when you use it and how much to
use, etc. The thing I missed is that on any invoice where you use any
rebate money, you don't earn rebate credit, no matter how big the invoice.

Example. You have a tiny $5 rebate, and you want to buy something cheap,
like a $6 tube, and something expensive like a $2000 Atlantis frame. If
you put that on the same invoice, and use your rebate to pay for part of
it, you get no rebate credit on your balance.

Instead, the way you should do it (and Riv states it clearly on the rebate
page http://rivbike.tumblr.com/rebates) is to put the tube on one invoice,
use your rebate and pay then net $1. Buy the Atlantis on another invoice,
so you get your $100 rebate credit.

I went in to Riv HQ on a Saturday, and bought 4 things, used my rebate and
paid ~$100 out of pocket. Had I split it into two invoices I would have
about 5 bucks in my rebate account. Not a big deal for me, but it could be
a big deal for you if you are going to throw together a big invoice and use
your rebate on it. So the general guideline is that when you want to spend
your rebate, try to do it on an invoice that totals up to something close
to your rebate balance.

[RBW] Re: Nuance of the rebate system

2012-01-31 Thread Peter Pesce
Hmm. I did not know that. Something tells me this new system won't last.

If this is the way people have to use the system, Riv will now have a lot
of little sales with very little revenue - it's going to be like The Price
Is Right where the game is to get your shopping cart as close to $0.01
over your rebate as possible - and they will create twice as many orders
and shipping tickets as everyone splits their purchases.

I honestly never gave a thought to my rebate - it showed up as a gift in
January. It was a very nice gesture of customer appreciation that required
no effort on my part. But now it's a game where you have to pay attention
or you won't get the credits, or they'll expire, etc. Now it's become all
about what's being taken away, or not gotten in the first place.

I'll probably just go back to not giving it a thought.

Re: [RBW] Nuance of the rebate system

2012-01-31 Thread Anne Paulson
This just sounds like a mistake. That is, I believe the situation is
as you say, William, but it's foolish and ought to be fixed. It's
pointlessly confusing, and will deprive some customers of rebates that
Rivendell ought to be giving them. To be sure, a customer shouldn't
get rebate credit on rebates. But they should get credit for the rest
of their purchase.

So, if I have a $100 rebate, and I buy a $3500 bike, I pay $3400 and
my rebate covers the rest of the $100. The $3400 I paid should count
as money I spent and should be eligible for rebate credit, because it
*is* money I spent. I shouldn't have to buy the pedals on one order
and the rest of the bike on another order just to get my rebate.

On Tue, Jan 31, 2012 at 1:18 PM, William tapebu...@gmail.com wrote:
This is a minor thing, and one that you've probably picked up on, but I
 missed it.

If you were eligible you got a rebate.  You can use that rebate whenever you
like within 120 days, or it's gone.  Moving forward, when you buy something,
you get a rebate credit that you can use within 120 days.  You'll carry a
balance, and you choose when you use it and how much to use, etc.  The thing
I missed is that on any invoice where you use any rebate money, you don't
earn rebate credit, no matter how big the invoice.

Example.  You have a tiny $5 rebate, and you want to buy something cheap,
like a $6 tube, and something expensive like a $2000 Atlantis frame.  If you
put that on the same invoice, and use your rebate to pay for part of it, you
get no rebate credit on your balance.

[RBW] Re: Nuance of the rebate system

2012-01-31 Thread William
For the folks who do think about it, it encourages folks to give Riv a
chance to sell them something every few months. I hope it works for them
in that context. I've got a silly little $4 ebay bucks credit that
expires on Feb 2, and it has me looking on ebay for something inexpensive
to spend it on, so I guess it works on a particular type of person. Who's

[RBW] Re: Which are more puncture resistant? Supremes vs Pasela TGs

Wasn't freedom from flats exactly what the OP was looking for?

I know some people are willing to accept the occasional flat if the
tires offers exceptional comfort or speed or whatever. That's fine
for
them, I just want to get to work and home again without getting my
 hand dirty.

FWIW, I have no problems mounting the Rando Pros, and have never pinch
flatted one. I don't expect a flat resistant, 460 gm tire to ride
like an Open CX, but I think the Rando Pros ride just fine for a
sturdy touring or commuting tire a la Marathon.

The Rando Hypers are lighter, faster, and still seem relatively flat
resistant. They might be a better comparison to a JB.

all was not well.  I had a bit of a pre-bonk at about the half-way point,
and quickly ate some trail mix and a granola bar, and downed some water.
This got me to about 95k, and then I really just lost my legs and felt
dizzy.  I made it in, but had to eat, and stop for more food/water on the
way home so I wouldn't fall asleep.
Hmmm - not too good at this longer ride nutrition stuff yet.  Oh well, I
have to get that sorted, as it was a great ride.  Not a lot of traffic on
