I use a Superflash on my saddlebag and these http://www.dealextreme.com/p/2-led-3-mode-fog-bicycle-light-red-pair-2-cr2032-44096 on the seat stays. [RBW] Re: new Hillborne
I have indeed found the bike I love. The rear Platrack with SlickerSack seems so obvious as a practical way to haul stuff that I'm a little surprised it wasn't at least part of the marketing. If it has some fatal flaw then I've yet to discover it on my initial ride. It works beautifully. I haven't fine tuned the fit yet; I need to shave the struts and/or adjust the height on the Mark's rack. I may end up with two sets of Platack struts if I can't find common ground between the Mini in front and the Mark's in back. [RBW] Re: new Hillborne
Not very different, really. Having different rack arrangements is likely the biggest difference i'll have between them at any given time. Redundancy is a major goal. However, the setup for each bike is fluid in some sense; I have 5 cockpits that work on either. Albatross (one Thumbie, one bar-end), Bullmoose, Moustache, Noodle. And as soon as I can get my hands on the Bosco 58cm bar (non-moose), I'll have a half-dozen. DaVinci couplers are my friends. Either bike can be a grocery hauler, a commuter, a camper, a recreational rider, a grand-day-out'er. And Orange has been all of these things, over and over. Green will simply share the burden. And now re-configuration or maintenance will not have to fit into the window between commutes! We get a few tourists in Seattle from time to time, too. Many from Japan and points west. They can often be entertaining to watch taking pictures of the rain, posing with transients and totem poles in Pioneer Square... but mostly just wandering out into traffic. They stick out like sore thumbs because Seattleites are notorious about crossing with the light. You get used to it, but if I'm feeling especially misanthropic (it happens; I blame the rain), I just avoid those parts of town where they congregate, even if they are mostly pretty nice. I'm sure I was a clueless yob when I was traveling the low countries in my 20s on my old Rockhopper... [RBW] Re: Atlantis fitment
5'10, PBH 85-85.5cm, saddle height 75cm. My 56cm Atlantis fits great but lately I have been wanting a 58. Hearing that individuals with slightly lower PBH's than my own is firmly supporting my hunch that 58cm may be the way to go. Soapscum - do you know for sure what type of riding you will want to do with the Atlantis? I ask because lately I have been using mine as a mountain bike on smooth but technical singletrack here in north Idaho and wonder if the larger frame coupled with 700c wheels might make trail riding a little trickier considering the boys downstairs. Also, ask yourself what width tires you will use. I run 50mm actual Michelin Country Dry2 ($13 each! 600g) and they subtract from standover significantly. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Powder Coating recommendations in Boston?
Slightly off-topic (and potentially heretical), but I'm looking for a good powder coater to help with a restoration of a 1986 Trek 620. I guess you could call this a poor man's Riv project. Anyhow, I'm hoping to find someone with experience with lugged frames, as this one as some great details I'd hate to cover up too thickly. Also have the original blackburn racks I'm hoping to coat to match. Would prefer powder over paint for durability issues -- I'm fixing up this bike to use as my primary ride. Any advice or experience, about Boston-area operations or about powder coating in general, would be most appreciated. [RBW] WTT: 56 cm Hillborne for something with more clearance and off-road capability.
I've moved southeast Utah and I plan to stay a while. The bike is a 56 cm double TT Waterford-built beauty in orange and I love it, but fatter tires would be ideal. well i have a newer atlantis and i cant help but notice the threaded holes at the top of the fork (fork shoulder). does anyone know of any racks that would mount into these threads? i would prefer a porteur or cargo style rack. i have a paul flatbed rack, and yet i dont like how it mounts on the quill stem, i feel it makes the front of the bike look too busy. since the threaded holes are there, id love to use them. any suggestions? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. John Philip and my plans originally were to ride with the group to Connellsvile and bid them good by and turn around for our BB reservation in Rockwood. With the bad weather predicted we decided to go no farther west than the Saturday destination of Confluence. We breakfasted with the group and while they went farther west, we headed back east to Rockwood. We managed to make the 20 miles there last nearly three hours. Rockwood is small and not much was open on a Sunday. We ate a couple of times at the Opera House and at supper a fellow who operates the Opera House and the Hostel on Main gave us a tour to the hostel. It is very nice and inexpensive. The Rockwood Trail House BB is nicer ( but more expensive) and I've stayed there before. We spent much time watching weather TV and scanning weather sites on computer and knew we were in for some snow. We awoke to a slight covering of wet snow and around 34 degrees. Light snow was falling: not too bad. After a great breakfast we left expecting it to be worse when we got higher near the Divide. It did get gradually snowier and windier. The stretch between Meyersdale and Deal to the Divide was very snowey with probably 6 inches of snow on the ground. It was very slow going in the snow: 5 or 6 mph with moderate falling snow but a tail wind. Curiously, when we got through the Big Savage Mountain tunnel there was much less snow on the ground, less falling out of the sky and different winds. The snow soon disappeared, the trail was gravel again and the tail wind returned. Our new problem then was we were cold. The little downgrade allowed us to make 14 to 16 mph on the way back to Cumberland but we were pretty damp from the efforts to reach the tunnel. We made it back to the cars and managed to enjoy it and make it back home the same day. I had some concerns about ride Hetres in the snow but they were not too bad. The snow riding was slow and level or slightly up hill though. The snow was gone by the time we were zipping downhill. As Manny says, Pictures prove it happened, but you will need to wait for John Philip's post because I forgot my camera. Our total rider count was 14, and folks came from as far away as Kalamazoo, Cleveland, Washington DC, Wilmington DE, Bowling Green OH, Princeton NJ and Syracuse. We had a great bunch, and the cross- section of Rivs was truly stunning... We had Saluki, Hilsen, Hillborne, Bombadil, Atlantis, Quickbeam, SimpleOne and Rambouillet... what a variety!! Friday night we assembled for dinner and a few beers in Cumberland, which is nestled in the mountains of western Maryland... beautiful country. Four of our group had ridden ahead to Frostburg, 16 miles up the trail where we planned to meet on Saturday morning. We were bracing for some pretty steady rain, and T-storms, according to the local weather forecast. Saturday morning we assembled at the Cumberland trailhead (where the CO Trail heads southeast to Washington, and the GAP Trail heads northwest to Pittsburgh). There is excellent overnight parking (covered by the highway), very close to the trail. We were wheels down by 8 AM, and hoping to get over the Eastern Divide by Noon. The sun was shining brightly at this point... huh??? We were puzzled, but delighted nonetheless. The ride up to Frostburg was gradual and not particularly difficult... but tedious. I was glad to stretch my legs at Frostburg, where we grabbed sandwiches to go, and met up with 3 of the 4 lead riders (one other rider, Ken Peyton was attempting an early breakaway... and would successfully hold off the peloton clear into Confluence, our stayover destination). A short distance up from Frostburg we came to the (massive) Big Savage Tunnel, which extends more than 3000 feet straight through Savage Mountain. This was IMPRESSIVE to say the least, and it was a blast to ride through. Shortly after the big tunnel we reached the top of the Eastern Divide (certainly NOTHING LIKE the Western Divide, but for us it
