I have a buddy with two bikes... a Bike Friday and a Brompton. Oh, he may
possess an old Trek road bike. But if he's ridden it since he got the first of
his two folders it's news to me.

OP: your way forward is clear: Keep all your current bikes. And get a Brompton.
H-type if you're tall. And a Bike Friday if you ever drive or fly to the start
of a tour. I'm just here to help.

Mini/Marks rack, but since the Bombadil has those nifty mid-fork mounts, I
thought I'd give it a try. Good news is: no strut bending required! I did
have to tweak the mount on the rack itself by a mere couple degrees just to
make it line up perfectly, (using a crescent wrench - kind of like the old
trick to toe-in brake pads on cheap calipers) but I could have simply left
it as is and tightened the bolts to bring it all into alignment.

Bottom line is it works great, and frees up the dropout for whatever other
junk I'll bolt on someday. And it looks good. And it's lighter. ; )

I've had a number of Silver bikes over the years - still have three. They
look good with silver/black components, and you can jazz things up with

Have fun with the re-paint.

Hey Mike,

Anything new to report on the frame bag? I'm considering the Revelate bag

Re: [RBW] Re: Rationalizing a Reduction; Encourage Me

2012-05-06 Thread Ray Shine
Thanks to all of you who responded. I enjoyed reading all the posts. Beth, my
wife would agree and disagree with your reply. She would be adamant in both
cases, though: I do have too many bikes, and that proves the second point,
having more than one butt, the other being at the top end of my torso.

The folder prospect I am respectfully dismissing. I have owned folders in the
past, and rarely ever folded them. My entire commute is by bike, and I never
incorporate public transit into that commute, so a folder isn't needed. My
employer has a large, and very secure and convenient bike cage in the basement
garage of the building, so my commuter is never locked out on the street to a
pole or meter. My second employer allows bikes to be brought right up into the
work space.

Many have advised to keep the QB. I admit that I nearly left it on my keep
list as well. Last year I removed the drop bars and replaced them with Albas,
and that is a wonderful commuting set up. But, last year I also picked up my
Yves Gomez, and equipped it with albas, a rack, and a wide-range double chain
ring set up. That has become my favorite all time commute/short day rides bike,
so it will stay in my garage. I'll need to fender it, however, if I dump the
Jamis commuter. For the time, I'll remove the QB from the list. Maybe go back
to drop bars.

Many urge keeping the Atlantis. I agree. It was never in jeopardy.

Several urge keeping the Bleriot. I like it a lot, but it is a size too small,
and my Rawland will give me the 650B experience. I will keep the Rawland for
the
handful of times each year that I ride off-road in desert sand conditions and
very occassional day rides up Mt. Tam or in the Marin Headlands. I do have two
sets of 650 wheels, and have commuted on the Rawland with a set shod in Fatty
Rumpkins.

For the road, I like the Canti-Rom, and it was my very first RBW purchase. Fits
like a glove.

Always welcome more comments. This is a very cool groupo!

Yea, I think that's exactly what I may end up doing. You may be
correct in suggesting that most high-end bikes go for 50% of retail,
however, it's really a matter of how much a person wants a particular
high-end bike and let's face it, if the right person comes along for
this particular bike, why wouldn't s/he pay 75% of retail vs. full

Anyway, I was hoping to use the cash toward a more standard road bike

Re: [RBW] Re: Slipping QR in horizontal drop out help

2012-05-06 Thread PATRICK MOORE
From the photo I saw on Amazon, the current XT QRs are internal cam,
so that eliminates one possible cause.

You might also look to see if the hub axle is a bit too long,
preventing the QR from clamping down fully on the dropout plate --
tho' if you are distorting the bearings this isn't your problem.

I would guess that the contact surfaces or at least one of them on
these current XT QRs is aluminum (saves weight, you go much faster)
and does not grip as it needs to.

Last option: get another, old-fashion QR like the early '90s Shimanos
-- all steel. I've used old ones on fixed gears for years with no
slippage.

sure the axle isn't extending beyond the dropout, which would make it
impossible to clamp all the way. This can be fixed by loosening all the cups
and recentering, or by adding a thin washer on the drive side.

You might also try taking the spiral spring out of the drive side. It could be
interfering with the clamping. It's not needed except to make it a bit easier
to put the wheel back in.

Finally, make sure both dropouts are the same thickness. If the non-drive-side
dropout is thicker, it could be keeping the drive side from clamping down
enough. A washer on the drive side would fix that.

I've used old ones on fixed gears for years with no
 slippage.

[RBW] Re: Slipping QR in horizontal drop out help

2012-05-06 Thread Jeremy Till
Usually, i've had now problem with good quality shimano skewers and
horizontal dropouts. Make sure that your quick release is working
smoothly--i dribble some lube around the pivot periodically. Aside from
trying an older steel one, you might also trying roughing the paint on the
dropouts to give the skewer more bite.

What bike is this on? Are you using uber--low gears often? It's counter
intuitive but actually grinding up a steep grade in the granny produces
more pull on the rear wheel than riding big gears or fixed gear riding.
That's why mountain bikes were the driving force behind the switch to
vertical dropouts.

Re: [RBW] Re: Slipping QR in horizontal drop out help

2012-05-06 Thread cyclotourist
THANKS for brainstorming this with me. It's frustrating to the point where
I'm considering a new bike, so would much rather get it fixed!!!

Here's what I found/did:

   - Dropouts appear to be same width ( ~7.2mm) and straight eyeball
   guesstimate. This could be re-visited
   - Surface of dropouts is rough and should offer plenty of friction.
   - Axle does not stick out too
farhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/7002722508/in/photostream.
   That was an excellent recommendation!
   - XT QRs are quality cam, but do have aluminum faces. I checked it out
and the knurled surface is pretty
squishedhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/7148797737/in/photostream/.
Possibly on account of my over-tightening it. I swapped it out for a better
   one.
   - In the process, I ditched the curly spring. That maaay be the
culprit. It wouldn't seat all the way in the QR end like it should and a
few windings stuck out past the edge. I couldn't push them down with finger
   strength. Fingers crossed.
   - Rim was re-dished when I converted the wheel from 130 to 135mm
spacing. I'm sure it's ok, but if the end-cap change doesn't work, I'll
   revisit.
   - Gearing... it's very low. 22X32 But it also shifts in the dropouts if
I'm in the middle ring/low 34X32. Again, probably the off the chart wattage
   I'm putting out.

I have another set of QR skewers I can try if need by. Same XT model w/
aluminum faces. I have an older Mavic set I could swap out for if that
isn't doing it. As I mentioned, it's pretty frustrating. I hope it's
something I'm doing wrong, or a problem with the wheel. If it's the problem
w/ the horizontal dropouts, I don't want to go to the time/expense/hassle
of getting them replaced with verticals. Nor do I particularly want to get
a new bike, although yes Mike, an Atlantis would be what I swapped it out
for :-)

Thanks to all for the thoughtful recommendations! Ride report to follow.

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne photos

2012-05-06 Thread charlie
I agree Mike.the Ribmos are fine but the ideal tire for my weight
is between 35-38mm (actual) with the Marathon Supreme being the
current favorite. The Ribmo seems durable and relatively flat proof
but not particularly speedy. Honestly though I have no data to support
that and don't even use a speedometer anymore. I wanted to try them as
I used to roll the Panaracer Urbanmax tires in that size and they
were great tires, speedy feeling but with a reinforced sidewall. The
Ribmos are heavier though and not round but more of a oval cross
section with the center of the tire making more contact it seems.
These days I just ride what I have until they are worn out. Perceived
speed is important I suppose and some tires do seem better than others
but except for the extremes I think its difficult to notice a huge
difference among most of them. Love the new bike thoughstill
dialing in the bar height/saddle position and haven't had much time to
ride yet..maybe later today when the rain stops.

advice from the group. Actually, I am seeking encouragement, as well
as practical comments on the following reduction plan. Will I have my
riding spectrum covered without too much overlap?

 Here is what I have:
 An Atlantis, fully rigged and used for long-distance touring;
 occassionally pulling a BOB trailer.
A first generation Quickbeam, rigged for city commute.
An Yves Gomez, rigged for city commute.
A Bleriot, rigged for any kind of riding.
 A Canti-Romulus, rigged for roading.
An un-built, new-in-the-box, Single TT Hillborne, Orange.
A Rawland Sogn mountain bike, 650B (Used primarily on fire roads)
A Jamis IGH commuter (my beater for city commute in rain)

Here is how I see the garage after the reduction:
An Atlantis (Or, maybe the Sam) for loaded tours
An Yves Gomez for city commute
 A Canti-Rom for fast rides
 A Rawland Sogn for off-road

Argh, I always hate to hear this, and having been to the Ferry Building
Farmers Market on a Saturday and knowing how busy it is, it just sucks even
more that this happened in such a crowded place.

I think about this everytime i leave the bike with bags attached, thinking
who would risk messing around and taking the bags, but now i realize that
most folks won't give a second look to somebody taking bags off a bike or
in your case the whole seatpost! Good luck on a miracle recovery!

[RBW] Re: SKS Front Strut

2012-05-06 Thread Minh
You have plenty of fender/tire clearance so this would not be an issue for
you, but this eliminates the 'safety' quick release feature of the SKS
front fenders, correct?

This is a great idea for those who do not have a nitto mini front to secure
the fender.

Maybe a short term trade with someone on the list? You take their Roadeo to

[RBW] Re: Question regarding listing my Hunq on eBay

2012-05-06 Thread Blindrobert
Well - I wouldn't buy a used bike for 75% of retail. The flip side of
your argument is that I would rather spend the extra couple-hundred
dollars and get the full warranty and the excitement of a brand new
bike. At $2800 your competition is going to be people looking at
things like a brand new Salsa or Surly, decked out new for under or
around $2000.

Yes, if you are prepared to wait, you can probably get closer to your
asking price. Though, as others have pointed out you will have to be
able to wait for the right person to come along.  I wouldn't sell it;
if you still like the bike and still plan to ride it when you return
then keep it.

Don't sell it on eBay. Also, keep in mind that listing it in other
forums or sale boards isn't a mutually exclusive proposition. List it
here, list it on velospace, list in on CL, list it anywhere you can
that's free. And yes - take great pictures!

Good luck with the sale and with your travels.

[RBW] Re: Question regarding listing my Hunq on eBay

2012-05-06 Thread Minh
I would also add that for components, the 50% is even more true, i've
bought out of the package never installed components at 50% off normal
price so on a bike it's even harder. While the hunqas don't come up that
often the second hand middle level frames (i.e. hunqa, homer's, bombas,
roadeos) trade between 1000-1400, so consider your components and see if
you can get to your asking price. But also keep in mind that on RBW, most
of us already have surplus parts so we'd place less value on a complete
build then most other people.

Yes, there is a chance you find that 1 person who was just about to buy a
fully built bike and would be happy to save 25% but that's very rare, not
sure that i've ever seen it. I hope you prove us wrong, but if actually
want to keep the bikedown the road and can store it, just put it away.
You've already take the depreciation, no sense in getting hit again if you
buy it again later.

be a solid 4-5 days of Riv-ish bike fun. And you're invited!

 Here's some detail.

 Thursday, May 31.

I believe the book-signing is scheduled for 6-7:30 PM. I'm going to
provide grilled sausages/burgers and/or pulled pork and fancy beer and
probably have potluck for the rest. I'm aiming to feed 50 mouths, but maybe
100, who knows! Come by the shop starting around 4-5 pm, and be hungry and
ready to talk bikes and look at bikes and ride around on bikes.

By pure coincidence, local bike company Salsa Cycles is sponsoring a
film at nearby Riverview Theater the same evening.
 http://revealthepath.com/
I would have hated to miss this, but there is a 9pm showing for the
film. We can do the book signing thing with Grant, then anybody who's
interested can ride over to the theater (which is an old-timey neighborhood
movie theater, not a modern shopping mall cineplex). If past experience is
an indicator, attending bike films at the Riverview with several hundred
Minneapolis bike nuts and bike industry types will be really, really fun.
Seriously, this is going to be a spectacular evening for bike people.

 Friday, June 1:
I'll be leaving in the morning to ride down to Red Wing to meet and
greet out-of-towners who are joining the Midwest Riv Rally. You can ride
down with me if you want to. The ride to Red Wing is about 65 miles. This
meet-and-greet will be an informal sort of thing, but I imagine we'll ride
around, eat, drink, be merry, and then scatter off to our respective
accommodations. The natural focal point for meeting up in Red Wing will be
Bay Point Park. Again, this part is highly unofficial and not at all
choreographed. Go to the park, and look for people on nice bikes, and then
hang out with them. I'm planning to roll in around 3-4 PM, but that really
depends on who rides with me and how fast we go.

 Saturday, June 2:
Meet at Bay Point Park around 8 am. We'll try to ride out around 9 am
down the Wisconsin side of Lake Pepin. Expect 50-60 glorious low-traffic
miles of mixed terrain, some hills, some gravel, some pavement, perhaps a
modest water crossing (or three). There are cafes and pie shops along the
route so we don't need to pack much food. Do not ask me how fast the ride
will be, please. I simply don't know, and don't care. It's my opinion that
the group should stick together. The fast guys and gals can wait for us
slowpokes at the tops of hills and at intersections. Everybody should feel
free to stop to snap photos, take a breather, slow down, walk up the hills,
etc. I don't plan to provide maps or cue sheets for various reasons, but
mostly so we don't get too focused on the route and so that the fast people
don't turn it into a race. When we get to Wabasha, I'll have camping
arranged, but there's at least one hotel there for those who don't care to
camp. You're on your own for hotel reservations. At this time, I don't plan
to have any support vehicle, so you'll have to carry your own gear or
convince someone else to carry it for you. Maybe one of you has a spouse or
friend or relative who'd like to be involved but who doesn't want to ride a
bike? If so, maybe you could volunteer that person to provide a support
vehicle? But my default is no support vehicle, just so we're all prepared.

I am pretty sure it's the aluminum contact surfaces -- modern skewers
are meant, it seems, for vertical dropouts only. I remember tightening
an allen slow release on one of my fixies until the (steel) skewer
snapped -- couldn't get the aluminum ends to grip tightly enough.

Come to think of it, I've got a 5-6 lb bag of old, old-school,
all-steel skewers and if you (the original complainant) want one, just
LMK. I think I've got a 130 or so and possibly even a 135 or two. None
are very pretty (except the NOS Zeus front which ain't leaving).

Note: will trade skewer/s for single old Campy Record dustcap or
pair/sof nice, shiny metal ones. (I have one Campy already -- thanks,

For keeping the QB as a commuter/beater, would also suggest going to nutted
hubs. Not theftproof, but often enough of a deterrent to the

If deciding to IGH, a Sturmey Archer 3 speed would be the easiest to fit on
the bike. (As has been discussed on this list numerous times.)

[RBW] Re: Rationalizing a Reduction; Encourage Me

2012-05-06 Thread LF

snip I am seeking encouragement, as well

as practical comments on the following reduction ... snip

I think you will be happy with whatever you keep. I know I would be happy
to ride any of them.

I'm chiming in to give advice on getting rid of the bikes you want to sell.
This is a great time of the year to be selling. However, selling takes a
big effort. If you don't have another job, then trying to get top dollar is
probably okay. If you value your time, and would like to have some for
work, family, riding, friends, here one approach

View completed eBay sales for what you are selling (or something you feel
is close) and aim to sell it for 20% less. CL is very time consuming --
ans. emails, showing, negotiating a price. It probably can work for such
nice bikes. If you are selling them at 20% off, you will get motivated
buyers and less aggravation.
If you sell them online, such as thru a Google bike group, consider having
them packed and shipped from an LBS and charge for it what it cost you.
Unless you are an accomplished packer/shipper, it's probably not worth the
trouble, and can lead to problems. Same thing for ebay -- let em go for
20% less then the going rate, but hope for the best.

I'll bet you a nickle that you will enjoy biking and life more with fewer
bikes. A 20% hit is a small price to pay.

Best,
Larry

Anything new to report on the frame bag?  I'm considering the Revelate bag

I love the idea of the frame bag because I could then get rid of my handlebar
bag, which works well, but if I could ditch it, I would.

 Thanks!

To me, that is definitely the way to mount Moustache bars: on a tall Dirt Drop
stem. Get them up and not too far forward.

I've ridden my Hillborne a lot that way and it really works well for me. An

rider-facing pockets.
