[RBW] San Marcos clip in Bicycle Times

2012-07-31 Thread Rob H.
Whoa, they've been and are still are as different as the US is to the UK or
East Germany was to West. Yes there is shared history but for over six decades,
they've been operating as two separate nations with two separate cultures and
writing systems. And bringing it back to bikes, two different levels of
attention to detail and simple craftsmanship!

I'm looking forward to building up my San Marcos frameset this fall as my go-to
quick, rando/charity ride/fendered but rackless steed. Will report back in a
few months with pics and my own thoughts.

2012-07-31 Thread PATRICK MOORE
God, how I hate snobbery on either side of the divide. If you want to
ride in flip flops or Bikenstocks, by all means do so. I like riding,
sometimes, in floppy Hawaiian shirts. But don't call those who use
retention systems fools -- that just shows resentment and meanness.
There is a purpose for retention systems, whether one prefers to forgo
it or not; just as there is a purpose for pneumatic tires and thinwall
tubing (Rivs are made of thinwall tubing).

Patrick Moore, who dislikes tight lycra but who won't call those who
wear it fools.

Re: [RBW] You really will like this video ...

2012-07-31 Thread jimD
In my view there isn't anything wrong with praising and enjoying bicycle racing.
The women's road race in the Olympics was fantastic.

The problem with the racing paradigm is that it really becomes a problem when
it is the
only model for riding bikes. I know folks who are totally into 'all training
all the time', they
don't race, they won't stop to smell the roses. They don't know what they are
missing.

If skiing worked like this it would be destroyed as a family sport.
If all fishermen were all working to be 'bass masters' it would be sad.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Mini-front rack is sold. I am willing to take offers on the
slickersack/platrack setup, my lovely wife hates to see bike stuff sitting

Slickersack-in like-brand new condition, taken for 3- 5 mile rides in
dry conditions to see if it worked for me. All bolts/spacers included
to mount it up. Includes jazzy Dora the explorer felt liner but I can
rip it out, its just tacked in the corners with some dots of glue, but
did quiet down the rattling on the coroplast liner. Not pictured is
the shoulder strap but that is included too. $100 Shipped.

Platrack-new condition but had to trim the stays a cm or two to fit
650b fork. Will fit any 650b or 26 bike but will need new stays for
 700c forks I would think. $90 shipped

Nitto Mini-front rack, again used for 15 miles, in like new condition.
I have a set of rubber clamps I will include that are not pictured.
 $85 Shipped.

Here is a link to my Flikr page with stuff for sale, let me know
offline if you have any questions. Thanks.

[RBW] Super geeky tire Q...

2012-07-31 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
The 559 X 60mm Schwalbe Fat Franks on my Surly Big Dummy are getting close
to retirement. I've never had a negative issue with their width but I'm
open to going a little skinnier... or not.

I love the Marathon Supremes on my Hilsen. I saw a tandem with 559 X 50mm
Supremes http://www.flickr.com/photos/russroca/7674248186/in/photostream/over
the weekend and came down with a serious case of tire lust.

I'm considering the Dureme in 559 X 50 that Riv sells. Riv does not sell
the Supreme in that width. I'm also tempted to go with the 55mm Big Apples
(the standard cargo bike tire around PDX).

I would love to hear comparisons/opinions from anyone who has ridden any 2
of Supreme, Dureme, Fat Frank, or Big Apple tires in the 50-60mm width.

Thanks, Andy

[RBW] Positive review of sneakers and tires

2012-07-31 Thread Amit Singh
Just wanted to let the group know that I'm enjoying two products:

- Evolv Cruiser Shoe - Super grippy on touring and king grip pedals, even
when wet. Fantastically comfortable to walk around in all day, multiple
days. Light weight and breathable. True to size. I got them on sale via
Zappos under $50.00.

- 37mm Pasela Tires w/out Tourguard on my A. Homer Hilsen. It's so nice to
be able to fit a tire this fat with lower pressures under fenders and still
ride this bicycle. The bicycle still feels swift and quick but even more
comfortable. Really enjoying these. Roughly 200 miles and no flats.
Looking forward to riding them through a few upcoming longer rides.

Be careful with the iPhone charging devices. In most cases if not all a
separate cache battery is needed to maintain a constant charge to the
 iPhone.

Mine would charge ok directly as long as I didn't plug it in till moving
and never stopped. Each change caused the iPhone to stop charging and
complain of unsupported charging device. Cache battery fixed this.

The cache battery at Peter White worked but has no external charger.
Takes 8 hours to fully charge the cache battery itself.

I've used the combination on two tours with good success.

[RBW] Re: Super geeky tire Q...

2012-07-31 Thread VeloZen
Hey Andy ... I have the 26x2 Supremes on my LHT and the same size Duremes
on my Hunqapllar. Both tires are really good, by which I mean they roll
well and provide an abundance of float-ation. I've had the Supremes for
over two years with only one flat that's still a mystery (flat the day
after the ride with no indication of the cause anywhere). I've had the
Duremes for 8 months now, no flats or issues of ay kind. Although I like
both tires, my personal preference is for the Dureme. Both are great on
pavement, with great grip on either dry or wet surfaces, but the Dureme
is a lot more versatile on the trails or sandy areas, where it slides less
and has better bite. The Supreme also makes an odd noise on smooth roads
... a medium-pitched hum ... but not annoying enough to worry about. To
me and my rather unhurried approach to riding, they both roll equally
smooth and fast, and feel about the same. Just better dirt/trail
performance from the Dureme.

I've posted a review here for the Dureme, which has some comparison, as
well as a link to a previous Sumpreme review : *
http://velozen.blogspot.com/2012/02/review-schwalbe-marathon-dureme-tires.html
*http://velozen.blogspot.com/2012/02/review-schwalbe-marathon-dureme-tires.html

Hope it helps ... I'm pretty confident in Schwalbe at this point, and
unlikely to buy a different brand when these tires wear out. They do wear
out eventually, don't they? I'm starting to wonder ...

Scott

[RBW] Trade my large MUSA shorts for your mediums?

I have two pair: green w/ blue accents, blue w/ black accents. These are

Lightly used, they are just too big for me. I have the mediums and they
rock.

No photos at present. I wore them a handful of times and managed not to
drip spaghetti sauce on them. :)

I will take either old or new MUSA mediums. Let me know the color and maybe
we can do a trade.

Last thing- I am touring all weekend, so if I don't reply after Wednesday

[RBW] Tubus Cosmo Rack Tall bikes

2012-07-31 Thread Ryan Ray
Some tall bikes have really steep seat stays making it impossible to mount most
racks nicely. I just replaced my month old Velo Orange steel rack (you can have
it for 55 bucks shipped) with a Tubus Cosmo with room to spare.

I debated over this one or the Nitto but after some photoshopping I decided the
Nitto might not fit either.

Highly recconended for tall frames without the extra chainsray length your Riv
may or may not provide.

[RBW] Slightly OT

2012-07-31 Thread Peter M
So I am not sure who watches trailers or whatnot but it isnt every
decade they come out with a movie centered around cycling, even if it
is messenger cycling.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1547234/
I work where they filmed this in NYC and even though CF isnt my thing
some of those bikes were incredible to look at, like they could be
shot into outerspace.
