[RBW] Re: OT Why are some unwilling to trade with people out of the US?
I live in Canada and have bought a number of things on eBay and also this list. Shipping is always a bit of an issue from the USA. It is much easier here to deal with Canada Post/USPS than is to deal with the likes of FedEx or perhaps worse still UPS. UPS, for example, has high brokerage fees for individual consumers, as do all the courier companies. It's generally easier for people inside the USA just to use UPS, as USPS doesn't pick up. Also, there are customs forms to complete for export. These are simple, but I notice people would prefer not to have to deal with these. Actually, it is often much easier for us in Canada to buy from Europe or the UK. We can more easily arrange shipping through the Postal Service of whichever country and avoid using couriers. The postal services from Europe tend to be quite efficient. And interestingly, for new products by Shimano or even Schmidt, it's often cheaper for us to buy from Europe. More choice too. Shipping is often cheaper and the European suppliers are well prepared for export. However, the advances in randonneur or country-bike equipment seems to be made mostly in the US. Places like Compass Cycles, Rivendell, Velo Orange etc., seem to be fairly unique in this day and age, so for us non-CONUS folks, it would be nice to have economical and straight-forward shipping options. But, at the end of the day, it really is more hassle to ship/receive outside of CONUS than within and so I think in these cases is there is no prejudice against people from outside the USA. In the case of the sale that you lost - the potential buyer was probably concerned about having to arrange customs clearance/pay duties and tax on the items. I used to work in the freight industry and can tell you that brokerage charges in the US can be very high (even if the item is duty free). For the most part, it's probably not worth the hassle except on low value items that would not require customs clearance (like $20 items). [RBW] Re: OT Why are some unwilling to trade with people out of the US?
Thanks for all the responses, on and off line. I can only add that I have ordered many bicycle components and accessories to the US from abroad, usually the UK, and never been hassled by import regulations. I understand that US sellers may be exposed to foreign buyers claiming, honestly or not, that goods didn't arrive. It seems that Paypal protects buyers better than it does sellers in that case, and that reasonably priced international shipping from the US does not allow delivery to be confirmed. That was news to me as I have always felt a bit exposed myself as a buyer and having to pay in advance. FWIW, I can ship a package up to 2 lbs to anywhere in the US registered airmail for about $6 using my local post office. I do have to go there, wait in line and fill in a short form. But that is my hassle, not the buyer's. Happy buying and selling to everyone. And riding. [RBW] Re: OT Why are some unwilling to trade with people out of the US?
I've shipped a lot outside the US. Interestingly, Canada has been the most troublesome. I hear Canadian customs has a big backlog, and in my experience month-long waits for customs clearance are not uncommon. The biggest hassle is not the USPS paperwork, but the buyer being (rightfully) skeptical that his/her shipment is indeed forthcoming, and me having to urge them to be patient for another week (or two or three). -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: OT Why are some unwilling to trade with people out of the US?
The other issue, of course, is cost. For bulkier items that don't fit in a USPS Priority Mail envelope or small box, the shipping charge can be easily $30-60. I've had numerous international buyers cancel orders based on shipping quotes. I can sort of predict it, so it seems like wasted effort to go through the motions of the calculation. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Tip to those of you who experienced customs paper work items - set up a USPS account on line. USPS has an amazingly easy to use web site that walks you through all the paper work issues. I shipped an item to Canada not too long ago and was on the point of refunding the buyer's money and giving the sale up as lost because of a long delay; the wait must have been three weeks. It finally arrived and the delay was undoubtedly this customs backlog. [RBW] Re: Wood
ted: (sorry for delay, I've been digging out from Sandy) Well, the shifting is pretty good, but I think I needed to use that particular front derailleur to get it to work well. It's a Suntour Cyclone/Superbe continuous band mounted FD, with a very short cage. If the angle of the cage isn't just right, I will occasionally throw the chain when shifting from the 26 to the 44. Dialed in I have no worries. Shifting up to the large ring usually requires at least a three cog shift in back. If I'm feeling fit, I'll mostly use the big ring, and bail out to the 26 for hills, or off-road, or hauling a trailer and such. As for how much is too much, I don't know. Sheldon Brown set up his Hetchins with a 50x28! with a 12-28 9 speed in back. (It was this bike that inspired me to try the Cyclotouriste as a double, but the 50 seemed too high to me.) http://sheldonbrown.com/org//hetchins/index.html close up: http://sheldonbrown.com/org//hetchins/source/3.html On Monday, October 29, 2012 8:14:19 PM UTC-4, ted wrote: Jonathan, as others have said lovely bike. How big a jump do you think is too much? I have a 650b Hilsen with a sort of half step set up (42-45 in front). I joke with the local tri-guys that the rims are made of carbon fiber Braking: the pads are dura-ace cork pads meant to use on carbon fiber rims. The Braking is not super great, but adequate. The wood smoke aroma on hard braking is a plus. At first I used regular rubber pads, and the braking was better, but they generated an unpleasant melting rubber smell, and made black streaks on the rims. Toe straps: yes, these are set up a la Power grips. No toe clips, just the leather straps, set up so the strap goes diagonally from front outside to back inside. I tried powergrips, but I didn't like the extra hardware, and that you couldn't easily adjust between different shoes. This is much simpler, and lets me use my collection of old toe straps. I find it is the ultimate float since you can move your foot fore and aft, in and out, and also swivel. I still like to be connected to the pedals sometimes. Rims: Those are the Nashbar rims you remember. Had them in my basement for years, before building the wheels. So far the finish is holding up fine. No sign of wear. Re: [RBW] Re: Sackville, Medium, Stuffed!
For reference (I use Ortlieb Packer Pluses and Packers) the Large carries 33 l stuffed but not violated, the M 23 l ditto, and the flap 'n' strap arrangements would probably allow at least 30% more for properly packaged items. A pair of Packer Pluses carries 50 l, and the smaller front Packers with extensions about 30 l the pair. Actually, I wonder about the last figure, because my experience with the smaller fronts is that as a pair it is hard to get more than I got into the Medium -- absolute volume is not the same thing as usable space. Overall, I'm confident that, for groceries at least if not peanuts or compressible clothing, the S-M easily holds as much as one fully extended and stuffed Ortlieb Packer Plus. I will add that, having recently owned a Hoss, the Medium tho' smaller (26 vs 23) provides at least as much usable room, perhaps because it is easier to load without things falling out. It certainly has more usable carrying room than a Camper Longflap at 24 l. Given that the Green Riv doesn't really like rear loads over 25 lb, the M ought to be just right. (Odd, since I've had lighter frames that could easily handle 15 lb more.) On Fri, Nov 2, 2012 at 11:14 PM, allenmichael allenmich...@mac.com wrote: looks great. [RBW] An interesting match of the Nitto R-15 rear rack and Berthoud panniers
I've had a set of the small, but very nicely made, Gilles Berthoud GB799 panniers for several years and I've used them for some short tours. Originally, I had them mounted on one of the Nitto Campee rear racks that are made with detachable low-CG grates (here: http://www.benscycle.net/index.php?main_page=product_infoproducts_id=874 ). The Berthoud GB799 panniers weren't well suited to the Campee rack, which seemed outsized compared to the pannier bags. I've subsequently sold my Campee rack. Recently, pretty much by serendipity, I happened to find some on-line photos that showed the Nitto R-15 rear rack on a couple of bikes. That rack looked quite suitable for the GB799 panniers, so I ordered the rack from Ben's Cycle. I mounted it on my Rivendell Road Standard and I've been very pleased with the match to my Berthoud panniers! The Nitto R-15 rack appears to have been purpose designed for the Gilles Berthoud GB799 panniers - if it wasn't they certainly conform to the rack quite perfectly. Here's some photos of the rack and panniers on my bike: http://www.flickr.com/photos/37964304@N05/sets/72157631927569683/ Jim Cloud Tucson, AZ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Cygolite mounting questions
I've bought or made several gizmos for fork mounting, unfortunately I've forgotten the sources for several of them. 1. There is a 1.25 long, ~1 diamater tube section with provision for a bolt to mount it to a lowrider braze on or to a dropout braze on. Forgot source, but cheap. (Not the VO items, below.) 2. Several on this VO page: http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/accessories/lighting.html 3. Minoura makes a rather fiddly but secure fork leg strap-on for lights with a metal clamp. 4. There is a ditto made from plastic including a plastic hose clamp that works but tends to break. Forgot source. 5. I've made sturdy if inelegant fork mounts using a section of 1 PVC pipe or old handlebar (looks better, especially if you plug it with something chromed) radiused to fit over the fork blade and slotted to accept a hose clamp. The metal ones don't look bad, actually. On Mon, Nov 5, 2012 at 8:25 AM, John three.littl.bi...@gmail.com wrote: I recently purchased a neat little battery light from Riv., the cygolite metro 300. Re: [RBW] Re: Anybody try a 650b Ram with Hetres?
Although a frame can handle a larger tire, the larger tire will raise the bottom bracket height, and that may or may not affect the handling. If you want the same bottom bracket height with wider tire, then you'll have to do a conversion. For example, the Rambouillet might have been designed for 700x28, and the 650bx42 gives the same BB height within a couple of mm. I recently rode the Ram with 700x35mm tires, and the bike felt a bit less stable than the Ram with 700x32mm, maybe because the wider tires put me higher off the ground... [RBW] Re: An interesting match of the Nitto R-15 rear rack and Berthoud panniers
Jim: Is the lower horizontal bar on the R-15 intended for pannier mounting? An irritation that I have about the Nitto big back racks is the awkwardness of using the platform with panniers installed. I've seen other mfgs racks with a second set of bars a couple of inches below the platform. The second set allows unobstructed use of the platform with panniers installed. IMHO the Nitto big back rack would be much improved by a second set of bars and eliminating the angle braces that seem to mostly get in the way of things. dougP On Monday, November 5, 2012 9:59:22 AM UTC-8, Jim Cloud wrote: I've had a set of the small, but very nicely made, Gilles Berthoud GB799 panniers for several years and I've used them for some short tours. The Berthoud GB799 panniers weren't well suited to the Campee rack, which seemed outsized compared to the pannier bags. I've subsequently sold my Campee rack. Maynard is semi-famous so his voice got heard and published. I actually wrote to Grant after MH wrote those things about Tucson to say that it seemed totally unfair to Tucson without printing a pro-Tucson piece too. Obviously that did not happen. Even now after moving away from Tucson I still feel like what MH wrote and GP published was unfair and not right. I actually met MH just before he moved and thought he was very nice. [RBW] Re: non-drop/non-albatross/non-mustache bar'd hilsens
Not really a suggestion...nor is my bike a Hilsen...but I ended up with a similar bar on my Quickbeam, a generic Masi branded swept back flat bar (it was a take-off from one of their Soulville bikes). Flat black, too...not great aesthetics but it feels the best of the bars I've tried so far on that bike: http://www.flickr.com/photos/85709120@N07/8135411607/ Soma also makes the Noah's Arc bar which is similar. Nitto also has this swept flat bar http://store.somafab.com/nihbb82260.html, with a bit more of a segmented look. Then their are the various Jitensha/MAP/Ahearne/VO Postino options, which have a bit more going on in terms of bends. I like the Soma Clarence bar. Open bar is good, too. Silver is not an option in either case. Civia also has a variety of swept-back flat bars. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I've used the Surly Open Bar and it's good. For a while I was liking it more than the Albatross Bar but now I'm back to being a fan of the Albatross. Currently I have an Alba on my Cross Check and an Open Bar on my Big Dummy. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] FT--Dove bar for moustache?

[RBW] Re: non-drop/non-albatross/non-mustache bar'd hilsens
I have an Origin 8 Space Bar : http://www.origin-8.com/?page_id=91short_code=Space+Off+Road+IIprod_model_uid=6331cl1=HANDLEBARS on a non-Riv city bike. I like the angle of the bars where you grip. They come either black or polished. IIRC they were around $30 at my LBS. Got tipped to these from another listmember. dougP On Monday, November 5, 2012 6:42:37 PM UTC-8, Seth Vidal wrote: So I've been riding around on a used tandem I got for me and the stoker quite a bit. I like the grips, I like the position I end up in on the bars and I'm thinking I could do this on the hilsen, convert it over to a 1x9 and keep the rom for go-fasty (well, go less slow-y). So I thought I'd ask here - what other kind of bars should I think about. These are the ones I put on the tandem: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001F3077M/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00 So.. Glad that Tom is being taken care of in Portland. Looks like a great ride with great company. Pictures look amazing too. On a side note the ladyfriend and I might head up there for the New Years. Look for a care package from Cal soon... [RBW] Lost? Let says extended exploring.
Last Friday on my commute home the ladyfriend calls me and I quote,Take your time we don't need to be there for a couple of hours. I took this as an excuse to take the long way home looking for a different way to get up to Mission Peak. I decided to take Weller Rd via Calaveras Rd. Didn't know that road was a private road until I get to the No Trespassing Signs saying Trespassers will be shot with rock salt. Figured rock salt to the chest wasn't a good way to end my week so I figured I would take it off road to meet up with a trailhead. Following a cow trail I found myself lost. Seriously lost. Lost to the point where the survival instincts are starting to kick in. Thinking in my head, It's getting dark maybe I should find/make some shelter and try early in the morning tomorrow. But at the same time knowing that the ladyfriend would be pissed if I came home the next day didn't bode well with me. So I push on. I eventually find my way toward Mission Peak with no help from GoogleMaps. Not many pictures show that I was rushing to get home: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mannyacosta/sets/72157631934795844/ -Manny I'm not lost. I'm just exploring. [RBW] Tokyo Cycle Show ( Picture Set )
Hello Not directly Rivendell related but I hope some might find it of some interest. I attended Tokyo Cyclemode on Sunday, the largest annual cycle show open to the public in Japan. It was 50km or so from home, so I cycled over and took some snaps of the things that interested me. On entering, I spent about 30 seconds in the carbon-racy-electric-gruppo-lycra-powermeter area, which was admittedly large and busy, and then moved on to an area where I felt much more at home. Too many pictures to post directly, but you can see the full set here : http://flic.kr/s/aHsjCHtu9t I hope the link works. I did have a small Rivendell surprise while touring the show. You will see it in the picture set. Paul -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Cygolite mounting questions
With the threaded dropout or fork blade braze on you could take a section of brass, copper, steel or aluminum pipe the diameter of a handlebar more or less and put a flat piece on each end with a hole to run a long bolt through. You could use locktite (the removalable kind) to make sure it stays. Heck you could even use a turned solid piece of something even wood and drill a hole and attach the same way. Super simple. My only question, why the fork.? Why not use it on your helmet to aid in turning corners and for 'pointing' at inattentive drivers? On Monday, November 5, 2012 7:25:33 AM UTC-8, John wrote: I recently purchased a neat little battery light from Riv., the cygolite metro 300. Very bright, light, easy to use! Perhaps there's a neat little gizmo to make it work without fuss? Thanks, John -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
