[RBW] Re: FT: Small Acorn Bag New, Camper Long flap

2013-01-25 Thread Ryan Ray
So I've had offers on the Acorn, and for a green long flap so I should put
the black long flap up for sale just in case I don't find a trade.

How's $100 for the newish longflap and the SQR? $80 without?

Still trying to work out a trade for a black acorn or acorn-like small or
like-small handlebar bag.

[RBW] FT: Small Acorn Bag New, Camper Long flap

2013-01-25 Thread Ryan Ray
I have a black camper longflap (and SQR if you want it) that I absolutely
love. I just picked up a tan small handlebar bag that was just what I
wanted: small, not floopy, nice looking. Actually the Acorn is far better
made than the Carradice. Anyway, after purchasing I realized I am one of
THOSE people who like matching-ish bike bags. I'm hoping someone will trade
me their green longflap (not likely) for my newish black one, or give me
their black small acorn handlebar bag or equivalent. Otherwise you can have
my acorn bag for $55 shipped.

[RBW] Re: Forward rocking vibration with long reach brakes

2013-01-25 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Photos on setup issues are a good idea.

There are a goodly number of variables in brake setup, as well as perceived
feelings. But, there's really no inherent reason why you should get
vibration from longer arm brakes. It certainly _can_ happen with some
setupsThere was a long set of discussions in some of the other groups about
the flexing of certain types of hangers for canti brake setups - those can
(under CX race conditions and other high load stopping conditions)
flex/deflex creating a front brake shudder. If you've ever felt that, you
would not describe it as "slight", so I don't think it's what you are
experiencing.

Is the vibration speed-dependent? In other words, is it much worse when
you increase speed or load? When you say "forward rocking" is it pulsing?
Is it a new rim?

To troubleshoot, I'd double check the brake shoe alignment and check the
rim surface. I'd also check the brake mounting itself so see if something
is shifting when the brake is applied.

My Hilsen has long reach Silvers. I'm in the 190 pound range and
definitely carry gear on the bike. But, haven't felt that kind of vibration.

I've been thinking about picking up a Roadeo lately, so I called Rivendell

you can choose any Rivendell stock color scheme, from any model, with the
cream accents.r. Any other "custom" color you dream up would be an
up-charge. However, I realized i didn't get clarification on whether the
stock color scheme could be from a previous model, like the gray & red Hunq

[RBW] Re: Tip for riding in the rain with eye glasses...

2013-01-25 Thread leeyut1988
that's funny, i stopped wearing contacts 12 years ago because i had so many
problems with contacts and bike riding.

My eyes were drying out from all the wind and that's even when I was
wearing fancy bolle and oakley sunglasses. Dry eyes and wind equals the
contacts flying out, losing them and not being able to see.

Or I would get a little dust particle in my eyes, that's very painful, have
to stop immediately and pop out my contacts and ride to my destination with
poor vision until I was able to get to a restroom to clean my eyes and
contacts and put them back in.

My rain riding plus glasses wearing now includes a fancy waterproof light
weight hiking rain jacket that has a form fitting hood with integrated
brim. I put my hood on under my helmet so my hood moves with my head and
the hood doesn't block my vision at all.

pattern and going for a dark red with cream headbadge and accents.

I unabashedly copied the stem shifter idea from Rene when I put my Gomez
together last year. I love them, and they operate a wide-range double with 8

the stem shifter set up:

I also have stem shifters on my Bleriot, although they are a vintage set of

[RBW] FS: Various Bike Bags (Baggins, Carradice, Berthoud)

2013-01-25 Thread Minh
First big bag purge of the year.

I recently cleaned out some closets and i’m embarrassed at the number of
excessive bags that i’ve accumulated (both bike and other types), so this is my
first attempt at moving some of them along. Prices include shipping and paypal
fees (as long as you live in the US). Please email me directly with any
questions, if you’re reading via a smart-phone, you may need to switch to the
desktop version (link at the bottom of your browser), to reply directly.

If you want to look at all the pictures you can start here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/minhi/sets/72157632610369600/

Berthoud 704 Bag and Rack: $250
This is the smaller of the two Berthoud Saddlebags the GB704, capacity is about
7L and measures
220mm W x 170mm H X 250mm D. I originally bought both sizes thinking i’d swap
between the two bags and two bikes but i’ve had the larger one mounted/used
99.9% of the time. I’ve used this smaller one a handful of times (sunny, no
rain). The rack has never been mounted as both bags came with a mount and i
only used the one. The rack is quite beefy and makes carrying heavier items a
little more manageable as it provides a platform from below to support the
load. The rack comes with a shim to fit a 27.2 seat-post, if you have a
different size you’ll need to come up with your own shim.

Baggins Boxy Bag: $75, Old style boxy handlebar bag, designed for the F15
handlebar rack. this is patched as a Baggins. the bag is faded and well
loved, but no holes or tears, there are some grease stains in various locations
on the bag. The F15 is not included, so you’ll need to get one of those if you
don’t have one.

Baggins Handlebar Bag: $95, I believe this is the pre-cursor to the hobo bag,
it looks a little smaller then a true hobo bag and the pockets on the front are
different, this one has 1 big pocket instead of two separate ones on the front,
with a single flap. Some light grease stains on the bottom where it got close
to the tire. Otherwise in very good condition, the leather is still really
dark. You can use this without a rack or decaleur (and i don’t think using a
rack would actually help) the bag sways as you pedal--but there are d-rings on
the corners in the front where you could secure it with some twine, will work
with drop bars the best. You can get this to work with alba and moustache bars
but it will require some creative arrangements with twine to the brake levers
to secure it.

Carradice Saddlebag (beat-up): $50, for those that can remember, this is a
carradice saddle bag from about 10 years ago that came to Rivendell as a
‘second’, somehow the bags were stitched with the pockets/flaps on the wrong
side (look at the picture, it’s hard to explain). You end up with a saddlebag
that works perfectly fine, but looks bad because you have an extraneous pocket
on one side and an extraneous flap on the other. Someone at Riv attempted to
‘fix’ this bag by snipping off the flap, but stopped halfway. Bottom line, the
extra pocket and half-snipped flap look terrible, but the center compartment
functions fine. The top-flap also has an extension to fit over-sized items,
surprisingly large volumes can be stored. This is missing the toe-strap that
goes around the seat-post. The bag has gotten very little usage over the
years, it still has the out of the box stiffness of old Carradice bags. The
gray spots in the pics is actually dust.

"Same price regardless of color? Or same price for threaded/threadless?
Anyone know?"

Toshi is right. Any Riv model that is built to order gives you some
no-charge color latitude. The two main exceptions to that are: They can
veto it if they hate your color choices and they can upcharge you if the
paintjob you want is a more expensive paint job than the one they normally
would have done. Color substitutions don't cost anything, for the most
part.

No custom paint charge on the Roadeo. I'm inverting the white red

Same price regardless of color? Or same price for threaded/threadless?

I like blue, so that's the color I'd get.
One thing confusing about the description on the Rivsite is where it says you
can get it red, or blue, or anything else that matches cream.
If opting for the latter, is there a custom paint charge? Or not? Doesn't say.

2013-01-25 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I've loaned my own bikes to customers and friends who have proved to be
trustworthy. It's not a bad idea, maybe, from a sales standpoint. If someone
comes in with a crummy bike that needs $300 worth of work to become a
functional crummy bike, a nicer "loaner" may sow the seeds of bike lust and
future sales.

Re: [RBW] 1 bike? Could you do it?

2013-01-25 Thread Steven Frederick
Of course I "could" do it. But there are a couple of reasons I wouldn't
unless I was literally forced to:

-I have several bikes that I wouldn't want to part with simply because they
are unique and/or special to me.

-I like to do different sorts of riding and I'd have to give up or
compromise the experience if I only had one bike. MTB for road riding?
All'rounder for trail riding? Doable, but less fun.

So, I could. But I wouldn't...

[RBW] Re: Nitto M18 or Mark's Rack Light Mount Epiphany

2013-01-25 Thread Tom Harrop
This is a great idea and I can vouch that it works well. I also used a
Nitto assembly to attach the light to the gf's Homer's Mark's rack (three
apostrophes in a row!). I used a bit of SS stock instead of a Gino's Mount
but the outcome is similar.

I didn't think to use a washer because I'm a hack, but it's been over a
year now and I just checked it—it's still rock solid.

No great photos but you can just make it out
here
.

2013-01-25 Thread Ron Mc
One last ps - since I have the tools and experience, if anyone needs a Gino
tapped for M6, look me up. I'll return it ready to go along with a washer

Re: [RBW] Roadeo specimens?

2013-01-25 Thread nawrock

This is not a stock color but was painted at D&D based on the colors of Marks
custom cross bike. When I first saw pics of Marks bike I was taken back by the
colors and ordered my Rodeo with those colors. Right after I got it Riv came
out with the same color scheme on some of its other bikes.

These were taken soon after I got the bike, the banana bag has been replaced
with a canvas small Kevins bag.
Great bike, True temper platinum OX frame, reynolds fork, made in the USA at
Waterford.

Hi. Do any list members have Roadeos that they're riding now? I'm especially
interested in seeing a picture of the stock white/blue model. There is a
blue/white frame on the Riv site but not one that's built up.
Thanks,

Re: [RBW] Re: 1 bike? Could you do it?

2013-01-25 Thread Robert Zeidler
I'll have to get some pics. W/ disc brakes wheel size doesn't matter much. Am I
going to run these man bike rims that much? Probably not but if the situation
arises.
