Re: [RBW] Re: wanted: large saddlesack

2013-03-24 Thread Matt Beebe
You may have called them just before a new shipment of the bags or
something, because the last broadcast email from Rivendell, about 10 days
ago, said they have all sackville bags in stock. Still, if you can find
an insane person who wants to get rid of theirs, please take the bag, as it
clearly needs a safer home away from that unfit bag-owner.

wrote:

Thanks Matt. I'd buy one from Riv, but there weren't any in stock last I
checked (a couple weeks ago), and nobody I asked there seemed to have an
estimate of when more would be available.

My hope is that somebody here has one, and for whatever reason, doesn't
use it enough to justify keeping it around. Swapping stuff is hardly an
 unheard-of scenario with this bunch!

[RBW] Taping Technique

2013-03-24 Thread Michael Hechmer
After changing the stem I had to re-tape my new-to-me Saluki bars. I had
some Cinelli cork tape of an appropriate color and decided to go ahead and
use it, although it wouldn't be my first choice. Which brings me to a
question. I learned, and have always taped bars in a single piece starting
from the drops and working up toward the stem. But I recently watched a
video on the RBW site which showed a technique that started from either end
and met at the levers. I decided to give it a try. The first bar went
well enough, but the second bar left me at the lever in an awkward
position, which was made more difficult by the very thick and stiff covers
on the Mafac levers.

Did I miss something and do something wrong? Would this technique work
better with thinner cloth tape and more supple covers? I've never thought
about it before, but is there any reason not to start at the stem and work
a single length to the drops, where it could be tucked into the bar?
 What's your practice?

That was Eddy Merckx's preferred bar-taping method. I've done it both
ways, but I've had better results starting at the bar-end, probably
because that's the way I've done it most.

[RBW] Source for MUSA Seersucker Buttons?

2013-03-24 Thread Matthew J
Four, possible five years after I bought it, my MUSA seersucker shirt still
looks good as new. Except that is, for the top large button which is no a
half button. As this is the third time now the cleaners managed to crack
this button, I'm all out of the large spares that came sewn in the hem.

The local sewing shop has a lot of buttons, but none look that close to the
seersucker. I guess I can always go mismatched. With luck the originals
are available for sale somewhere.

Re: [RBW] Taping Technique

2013-03-24 Thread JL
There is a reason for not starting at the stem. Unless the bars are going to
be shellacked, starting at the stem puts the open end of the wraps at the top.
(Take a second to visualize it) With the tape like that the rider's weight
causes to bar tape to roll like the pages of an old paperback book. When the
bars are wrapped from bottom up the overlapped part of the tape takes the
weight and stays tight.

[RBW] Re: Taping Technique

2013-03-24 Thread William
Did I miss something and do something wrong?

Yes, you did miss something. Mark does not start from the ends and meet at
the lever. He starts at the bottom of the drop and stops at the lever.
Then he starts again at the lever and finishes at the top.

That's the way I do it, also. The only difference is that Mark places his
4 long bridge piece at the beginning. I place it in the middle, after
I've gotten to the lever from the bottom

some Cinelli cork tape of an appropriate color and decided to go ahead and

  What's your practice?

curious for a while now about what the moustache bar is like. That's one of
the fun things about Rivbikes is that you can switch out different styles

It is a great ride and the prettiest bike I have seen in the flesh, so to

[RBW] Re: are there any true 700x40 plush, high tpi tires?

2013-03-24 Thread dougP
Lower pressure = better ride, down to a point of working harder. You gotta
mess with it pay attention. As my tires have gotten chubbier, I'm using
lower pressures liking things better. 50 psi in a 40 mm Schwalbe
Marathon Supreme is a nice ride. After a few weeks they get hard to push
a pressure check usually shows them under 40 psi. At 60 psi they are
pretty zippy, at the expense of comfort. Another plus to lower pressure is
they don't lose pressure as quickly.

The Atlantis came with 35 mm Paselas but it's been a decade so I don't
recall how they rode. Someday I may try something lighter than a Schwalbe
but long wear lack of punctures is a big plus. Just replaced a nearly 2
year old Marathon Supreme on the front with over 11,000 miles no
punctures. Knock wood, can't complain about that. It's mate on the rear
went nearly 8,000 miles with a single puncture. If I wasn't so lazy, I
would be more motivated toward lighter tires.

[RBW] ...and speaking of the Large Saddlesack...

2013-03-24 Thread shawn m.
I didn't want to hijack Jim's thread looking for one, but at the risk of
committing heresy I've got a beef with the Large Saddlesack. Don't get me
wrong, I think it's a thing of beauty, unequaled in craftsmanship and
utility. The Large Saddlesack ideal, I'm totally on board with. In
practice, not so much. I picked one up in November and spent the winter
trying to get it to play nice with my bike, a 54cm Hunqapillar. The
write-up on the website made it clear that I'd need a rack. No problem, I
have a Nitto Big Rear Rack. Ah, but it doesn't really work with that; the
tombstone interferes. I tried to resolve that by buying a Nitto Saddlebag
Grip from another list member, but it didn't make enough of a difference. I
spent an afternoon at the hardware store designing a 4 offset, but it was
too flexy. Finally, I bit the bullet and got a Nitto r14 rear rack and
it's... just okay. The springs on my B67 interferes with the bag so that
the bottom half sticks under the springs, and it droops off the back of the
rack just enough to obscure my dyno taillight. For whatever reason, I'm not
yet willing to give up on the bag though I was sorely tempted by Jim's
post. Has anyone with a non-gigantic frame had success mounting a Large
Saddlesack without compromising it's aesthetics and/or it's utility?

[RBW] Repainted and rebuilt low trail Hunqapillar

2013-03-24 Thread René Sterental
Hi all,

After spending all weekend in the delicious task of rebuilding my newly
painted Hunqapillar with its low trail fork, I'm happy to report that I'm
mostly done and share the photos that proved I worked hard and loved every
minute of it.

Pictures to prove it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/

Afterwards, I took the bike on its maiden ride to test everything around
the paths in Stanford University and stopped for a beautiful sunset moment
in the garden outside the Rodin museum.

I did several updates to this build:
- Went with a 175mm 26/40 Sugino crankset, but will likely replace with a
172.5mm 24/38 I just converted. I've had some hip issues and seem to handle
the 172.5mm better, although the Betty has the 175 and I've been doing fine
with it. Go figure. Maybe the repeated attempts to stay on the Low
Carb/High Fat diet with progressively shorter relapse intervals is
working... The 24 will definitely help me in the climbs, at least until I
lose significant weight, and for the same reason, the 38 may be a bit more
friendly on the flats, especially when riding loaded or on a headwind.

- Went with the 55cm steel Bosco handlebar instead of the previous 58cm
Bullmoose Bosco. While the Bullmoose is awesome and very stiff, after
riding it for a while before the repaint, it seemed a bit too wide. Riding
the much narrower GB Promenade handlebar on the Betty has made me realize I
prefer narrower handlebars than what I used to ride. While the Promenade
may be too narrow for the Hunqapillar, especially off-road, the 55cm Bosco
seems like a perfect middle ground. I've also noticed than as I've started
riding narrower handlebars, my shoulder and neck pain have also
significantly improved. Even when riding the GB Randonneur bars on the
Atlantis with their more forward position. Another improvement I chose is
to use reverse brake levers in order to get the full smooth sections of the
Bosco bar while improving the hand positions that still allow me access to
the brakes. I currently have a set of Tektro 4.1 reverse levers, but will
try a set of Paul's reverse brake levers as they provide more versatility.
The Tektro reverse brake levers also seem to provide a very flexy braking
experience, so I want to see if the Pauls work better.

- After much thought, I decided to not mount the Pass Stow rack that I
had before and instead, mount the Nitto Mini + Tubus Nova that I first used
on my Bombadil. I'm still keeping the Pass Stow rack and may install it
again, but I didn't like the Porteur bags so much and will try using front
panniers instead.

- Decided to try a pair of 50mm Schwalbe Big Ben tires, and I have to say
I'm quite impressed. They roll very nicely, and on the dirt and rough
pavement provide a definite cushy ride. Did I say I'm quite impressed?

- Still pending is the taping of the handlebars. I'd like to experiment
with the full leather sewn-on bar cover that Velo Orange sells, but may
also end up using Brooks leather tape or the super cushy Cinnelli gel-cork
tape I'm using on the Atlantis. I really like it. I'll probably end up
taping the handle bars next weekend, once I'm sure everything on the
cockpit is the way I want it.

Happy riding and planning an S240 soon, since I couldn't make it the last
one organized through this list.

René

mostly done and share the photos that proved I worked hard and loved every
 minute of it.

 René

Re: [RBW] Repainted and rebuilt low trail Hunqapillar

2013-03-24 Thread René Sterental
Thanks Brian!

I spent a long time deciding on the color scheme, particularly debating
between pewter and silver. Pewter ultimately won and I'm so glad I chose it.

Rick Stefani at DD did the paint job. He's local and Keven sent me there.
He paints a lot of the Rivendell frames.

I do like the downtube shifters but after I fine tune the fit of the 55
Bosco on the 120mm Tallux stem, I'll see if there is space for the shifters
on the stem's quill. I have them like that on the Betty and love them. They
didn't fit with the Bullmoose Bosco, but they may fit on the regular.

The reverse levers are great, but the Tektro 4.1 seem provide a braking
feel that is too flexy. On the Betty, with the front Paul Racer and the
rear Silver, they cannot lock the wheels on a steep downhill. The braking
seems to be a bit better on the Hunqapillar with the Neo-Retro/Touring
brakes, but I ordered a set of Paul's reverse brake levers that can be
configured to work both with long and short pull brakes. I have a strong
feeling, from the time I tried their regular levers, that they'll be much
better than the Tektros. The Tektros work well on flat commutes and regular
street riding, but I want to make sure I have brakes when I need them, and
not that I'll be pressing the levers like crazy while my tires slow and
then stop... or don't.

Forgive me for responding as I don't have one available, but can't help but
share that I do own a large saddlesack, and that it is the most useful
piece of auxiliary bicycle equipment I have ever owned... and I have more
than one large saddlebag from another renowned and long-lived maker. I
bought my large saddlesack from Rivendell at $230 IIRC, and it is worth
every penny and then some. Good luck in your search, but whoever is
willing to trade away their large Saddlesack bag is crazy.

Thanks Matt. I'd buy one from Riv, but there weren't any in stock last I

My hope is that somebody here has one, and for whatever reason, doesn't use it

[RBW] Eastern OR Riv Ride - Wasco County Country Bike Ramble

2013-03-24 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt

The Wasco County Country Bike Ramble is happening on Saturday, April 6th.

The mapped route http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2251278 is a 60-mile loop
out of Maupin, OR with 4100ft of climbing. There'll be some agricultural
land, a stretch along the Deschutes River, and many miles on quiet roads
through open forest. Many of these miles are new to us (Leaf Slayer Mike
helped me with the route), so be prepared to stop for frequent map
consultations and to take it all in. This route is largely off the beaten
path… come prepared accordingly (food, spare tube, layers, etc). The plan
is to stay together as a group.
