Re: [RBW] Re: That Pugsley
My commuter is built on a Karate Monkey-framed frame I chose it for the disc brakes for all-weather, all-season, daily use. I took the rear-opening dropouts' as benign until changing a tube halfway home from work late one cold night. It was below zero that night and those rear-opening drops advanced from benign to Hell-bound and life-threatening as my fine motor skills faded and as the the complexity of getting the wheel past and cogs unknitted from the derailleur and chain prolonged the usually nominal task. I was holding the wheel, pulling the tube out when I realized with my last rational thought that I should have ridden the flat all the way home, but then I became very calm as my hands stopped having feeling and I quit shivering. The Disc Trucker replacement is in the front hall, a nice 52 cm Nitto RM-013 on the way to match my Rambouillet's. I agree Ian. It's at least close. Running barefoot comes in first for me. No tire or bike noise. [RBW] OT - Brewpub racer on the cheap - first summer ride in San Antonio
Been working on a bike project the past month, and had some great help from Patrick Moore - he donated the wheels. Finished Saturday and took a maiden voyage to the brewpub on Sunday. The frame - lightweight lugged steel made by Francesco Moser in my size (64 cm) - won as a lowball snipe on ebay. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/F%20Moser/aP4290009.jpg Frame came with a Campy Mirage bottom bracket and a needle bearing headset, though that stem and I won't get along. Built from Dedacciai Zero Tre triple butted Cr-Mo tubing - the spec'ed frame weighs 4 lbs. and the graphics identify this bike as late 90s. I have the moustache cockpit on my old Raleigh dialed in perfectly, so I started with a sitbone to hood measurement, planning to duplicate it in the top hood position on the Moser. Went with Cinelli 64 bars, 10 cm Nitto Deluxe (long Pearl) stem, with 80mm of quill showing. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/F%20Moser/aP5060002.jpg I was hoping to re-use whatever parts I had around and made do with my rebuilt Shimano 600 EX rear derailleur (the VO red pullies made a cool touch). I had the new Dia Compe brake levers in a parts box. Front derailleur is a used Campy Daytona for $17 on ebay. But I was also hoping to re-use a really nice Sugino Nuovo-Record-clone crankset, but Q was too low, and it would rub the chainstay. So I went shopping on ebay again. I discovered that even though BIN prices are crazy, naughties-era Campy parts sell cheap in auction. Seems everybody wants the latest skeleton 11-speed et. al. and 10-speed or older goes cheap. I paid $100 for a NOS Centaur crankset and even happier, these beautiful Chorus dual pivot brakes removed from a floor bike for $70 Since Patrick gave me the nice wheels on really nice hubs, I sprung for the good Challenge Parigi-Robaix 27mm tubulars (hoping I have better luck with these than he's having with the clinchers) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/F%20Moser/aP5110001-1.jpg Already a fan of the Thomson Elite seatpost on my other bike, I went with the lighter Masterpiece for this one, and the Selle Titanico X saddle. Jury is still out on the Selle waterproof white leather bar tape - it has square sharp edges, but isn't a real problem with padded gloves. The saddle - most invisible saddle I've ever ridden, but not without a hitch... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/F%20Moser/aP5110001.jpg My old KKT pedals with Cinelli alloy clips and Ale yellow straps. Last piece to come in was a Zenith 8-speed freewheel from SJS in the UK. 13 to 24 - on the 39T front chainring, my 8 gears are 43 to 80 inches, with a 5 spread between gears - all very useful. I'll let you know how the freewheel holds up... Chain is the 9-speed hollow-pin SRAM, good buy at Outside Outfitters, but they just beat the UK shipping by only 2 days - they are very slow. The crowning touch are my straight lever Campy Grand Sport QR skewers. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/F%20Moser/aP5190022.jpg I'm in for $650 and ready for the maiden ride. A minimalist tool kit in a Randi Jo bar bag. I already hate the bar-end bell - it rattles and was the first thing to come off. Have to come up with a new bell bell plan. Any recommendations on a small bell? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/F%20Moser/aP5190002.jpg There's a 12-block zone south of my buddy's house that you're taking your life into your hands, and since I had to haul my bike in the truck anyway, we hauled both bikes to Breckenridge park and rode into downtown from there. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/F%20Moser/aP5190021.jpg We first rode north to the bike shop (Bike World) but found they didn't open until noon, so back down Broadway to S. Alamo and Blue Star - there the bike shop was open and it was a good thing. My saddle had stretched so much in the first 8 miles that it spread over the adjusting bolt http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/F%20Moser/aP5190007.jpg My buddy bought the pump he wanted, the gentleman at the Blue Star bike shop would not let me work on my bike - he fixed it right up for me,. On to the Mission trail. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/Raleigh/F%20Moser/aP5190008.jpg The Mission trail is a nice ride, 8 miles from Blue Star south along the San Antonio River to Espada park. You have the option to stop and tour the missions, which makes for a great family outing http://www.nps.gov/saan/planyourvisit/hikebike.htm Of course that also means family traffic on the trail, so good bell, good brakes and patience, grasshopper. There is also a dearth of shade here - the river was scoured for flood control - a few of the parks at creek mouths have shade that you treat like oases - stop and hydrate.

Re: [RBW] Re: Freedom of the Bicycle
Patrick M., that passage is wonderful. Who is the author and what work is it from? When I was a child, I was fascinated by aircraft and flying. For me, it held the promise of of a type of movement--soaring, skimming, swooping--that held allure for me. Its pull was strong enough that I pursued flying lessons from a young age, eventually earning my pilot's license just before my 18th birthday. Along the way, I discovered that flying didn't feel like what I expected it to. The sensations were totally different, sometimes noisy and overwhelming. Around the same age that I was earning my pilot's license, I was discovering cycling, and the truth is that nothing has come closer, for me, to the feeling of flying that I sought as a child. Riding along under your own power, balanced on two cushions of air, really is something magical. Cycling has held its own challenges, and sometimes I struggle with gracefulness, but it's that feeling of flying that keeps me coming back. On Monday, May 20, 2013 5:22:43 AM UTC-7, Patrick Moore wrote: Talking About Bicycles Talking about bicycles, said my friend, I have been through the four ages. I can remember a time in early childhood when a bicycle meant nothing to me: it was just part of the huge meaningless background of grown-up gadgets against which life went on. Then came a time when to have a bicycle, and to have learned to ride it, and to be at last spinning along on one's own, early in the morning, under trees, in and out of the shadows, was like entering Paradise. That apparently effortless and frictionless gliding--more like swimming than any other motion, but really most like the discovery of a fifth element--that seemed to have solved the secret of life. Now one would begin to be happy. But, of course, I soon reached the third period. Pedalling to and fro from school (it was one of those journeys that feel up-hill both ways) in all weathers, soon revealed the prose of cycling. The bicycle, itself, became to me what his oar is to a galley slave. But what was the fourth age? I asked. I am in it now, or rather I am frequently in it. I have had to go back to cycling lately now that there's no car. And the jobs I use it for are often dull enough. But again and again the mere fact of riding brings back a delicious whiff of memory. I recover the feelings of the second age. What's more, I see how true they were--how philosophical, even. For it really is a remarkably pleasant motion. To be sure, it is not a recipe for happiness as I then thought. In that sense the second age was a mirage. But a mirage of something. How do you mean?, said I. I mean this. Whether there is, or whether there is not, in this world or in any other, the kind of happiness which one's first experiences of cycling seemed to promise, still, on any view, it is something to have had the idea of it. The value of the thing promised remains even if that particular promise was false--even if all possible promises of it are false. Multiple rides daily, bike fair, World Naked Bike Ride (sponsored by Portland Art Museum this year!), the list goes on. Cyclepedia isn't just a bunch of beautiful bikes on display. Many other bike related events and talks are scheduled at the museum. There's a corresponding book, and a pretty stunning (not free) iPad app. Details here: http://www.portlandartmuseum.org/special/cyclepedia/about If you've been thinking about visiting Portland's bike culture, this would be the time to do it. [RBW] Conversion to Albatros Bars... maybe
I am thinking about how to help my wife get more comfortable on her single. We have finally worked out all of the issues on the tandem but the solution for her single has eluded me. She is 5'8 with a saddle height of 70 on a 1984 Specialized Sequoia (I think we bought it from someone on this list quite a few years ago), She has long complained about pubic chafing and a variety of saddles hasn't solved the problem. On the tandem we moved the saddle forward, and brought the bars as far back and high as possible and that seems to have helped a lot. Lately she also mentioned neck strain after a two hour ride. Oh, and we are both in our late 60s. Her bike is 52x52, has just a fist full of seat post showing, a Technomix Delux stem (9 cm?) at the max line and noodle bars; silver BEs a 7 spd freewheel. 46/36/24 rings. Possible solutions: (1) Convert to upright bars, like the Albatros. I have no experience with them. How might it affect handling? Would I use the same stem? (2) Buy the new Tallex stem and simply raise the bar. (3) Buy her a 55 cm Betty Foy and transfer everything except the brakes and wheels. I think she would like a step through frame (but doesn't actually say so, other than it is easier to get on the tandem which has a steeply sloping TT) and the 55 would give her higher bars, but I can't figure out what the reach would be on that size Betty. I also think she would like tires wider than the 30s she now rides but has never mentioned it (4) Spend the whole wad and buy her a Betty with Albatros bars; (5) win the custom frame giveaway at the end of May! What has been your experience converting a bike from drop to Albatros? Any thoughts on the other option appreciated. [RBW] Re: Internet sales tax Rivendell...thoughts?
In most/all states that have sales tax, you are supposed to report out of state purchases and pay taxes on them, as Michael H scrupulously does in VT. People who order out of state to avoid taxation are breaking the law, though enforcement is almost non-existent. I have had customers ask me for discounts to offset the tax they'd save (illegally) by ordering out of state - of course, that doesn't save me from having to pay the tax at the end of the month... As a small operation that does some mail order, I don't care to file sales tax returns on every out of state sale. Compliance would be much less complicated if it was just a federal alternative sales tax. Let the IRS sort out which states get the $$$. Your thoughts on such effect on the house of Rivendell customers. Not so much given that many of of the items that Rivendell sells- and in many cases, even equivalent alternatives- is not readily available in most bike shops. I buy over the internet to find items that I can't get locally or at least can't get conveniently from a local supplier. Occasionally I buy over the internet due to price but if shipping, handling (and now sales tax) is close to what I'd pay locally, then I buy locally. I get it faster, I can see it before I buy it, and I value my relationships with local businesses. Agree, I recently was looking for a new bar and stem. I really like my 44cm Nitto Noodle bar (model 177) and decided to find one. I looked online and saw the price ranged from $53 to $105 (athough the latter price was for the larger 48cm). Riv sells them for $73. I then walked into a LBS I hadn't been in for a long time and guess what, they had the noodle bar for $65! It was the last one, but they said no problem ordering more if it got sold. No brainer, I bought it! I was also looking for a IRD satin stem (nice polished silver stem) which sells for about $44 on IRD's website. The LBS sold the same stem for $40! Duh, another no brainer, just need to decide between a 7 or 17 degree rise! Good Luck! Tim -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Conversion to Albatros Bars... maybe
If the top tube has her stretched out and she's complaining of neck pain, chances are that the Alba's will help. The position is naturally further back and more upright, so weight gets transferred as well. Typically, you're going to need a longer stem to get the bars a little bit forward. I wouldn't get too pre-occupied with all of the potential hand positions, rather, just focus on her comfort sitting upright with hands on the grips. A mixte that can take cushy tires with an upright position and possibly a sprung Brooks sounds like a real nice bike for her. It'd be great if you could find something similar for her to toodle about and see how she likes it. Try some Alba bars, a VO threadless stem adapter, and some +/- 6 degree-ish threadless stems from ebay. I suggest this as this will allow you to play with various heights and reaches before you buy another Tallux stem. . Or, just keep the VO adapter and threadless stem combo. I am done with the hassle of the old school quills . You're gonna need new cables and housing too, so set the bars as high as she *might* want them, then cut the cables. Do a test ride. You can always trim them later, but not add to them !! The Alba bar handles just as well if not better than drops for me. Drop bars were fine back in the day but for many if not most people they are unnecessary . The perceived aerodynamics of being lower and the truth of a wind tunnel can be surprisingly different ! THE most important factor of course ... in ALL of This . is Having FUN ! Alba bars are Fun Waaay fun !! The essay is from Present Concerns which (I think) is a collection of essays. The photo shows Lewis and his older brother, doubtless near Belfast and probably circa 1908 -1910 (Lewis was born in 1898). Too bd the photo isn't in color, as Lewis as a boy thought that Ireland was so much greener than dry, barren England. I copied the essay from a blog that came up from the Google search I did for the essay -- I'd read it years before but forgot its source, and Dn. Re: [RBW] Re: Internet sales tax Rivendell...thoughts?
I can see this thread getting political very fast, but paying sales tax in the state where you purchase but don't live (counts as interstate commerce) is unconstitutional. Keeping up with sales tax for other states is an unfair burden on a vendor, making fair tax an oxymoron. I believe the size of internet commerce, though, will take us eventually to a federal VAT/sales tax, which is probably the most fair tax since it is based on consumption. That doesn't mean expect them to give up other existing taxes in return - it just doesn't work that way. Re: [RBW] Re: Internet sales tax Rivendell...thoughts?
True story: Customer walked into local bike shop. Looked at a wheelset from a local distributor (Seattle Bike Supply). Decided to buy the same wheelset from a mail-order shop in Florida. The price is the same, but customer doesn't pay sales tax, and shipping is free on orders over a certain threshold. So the wheelset was shipped to Florida, then returned to Seattle, all to evade some taxes. Whether you are for or against taxes, it makes sense to apply them the same across the board. Small businesses like Compass Bicycles will be exempt. Rivendell, with 15 employees, isn't that small any longer. In theory, this gives small businesses an unfair advantage. A national sales tax that would be paid by everybody would solve that problem, but that's not feasible for other reasons. (That said, economies of scale are such that big companies don't have to worry about us small ones having unfair advantages.) There will be software to allow for compliance. Compare this to a bulk mailing, where you have to sort your mail based on the U.S. Postal Service's ever-changing routing arrangements. For $ 30/year, you can get simple software that does the sorting all for you. The price includes updates every few months... just like you would need because some municipality has decided to buy another ambulance and increased their sales tax by 0.1%. When I ran a business in Missouri as in most states we didn't pay or charge sales tax for out of state purchases. I love wording fair tax NOT... and most sincerely don't see this as the Feds business. Compliance would be easy as most accounting systems already have multiple tax fields available. [RBW] Portland Country Ride
Hey all, A buddy is getting married this summer so for a bachelor's party we did a S36O to Vernonia for karaoke. The last time I did that ride was 9 or 10 years ago. Then the Banks-Vernonia trail was 3 miles of broken asphalt overgrown with so many blackberries as to be unrideable. Now, it is 30 miles of new pavement. I'd read about it many times, but hadn't actually ridden the new version for myself until this weekend. For the return there are old timber roads connecting Vernonia with Scappose, so another 30 miles of off-highway riding. All in all, a spectacular and long overdue weekend. I, personally, didn't bring a camera, but there is proof it happened: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bikeportland/8757055994/in/set-72157633524674463/ There's Riv activewear, but alas no bikes this time. Call Rivendell or consult the geo charts for the TT length on the Betty. I am 5'8, 44 year old male, 71 seat height, 82 pbh and the Sam is long for me at 56.5 TT. I need a 6cm stem for drops and staches. I will probably use my 8cm Tallux with shim for Albatrii when I get them. Seems like I have to go shorter than rivrecommendations for stem extensions. Of course I am not the same dimensions as the wife, but just threw in my reach info for thought since we are same height. Re: [RBW] Re: Internet sales tax Rivendell...thoughts?
There is nothing unconstitutional about paying sales tax in a state where you make a purchase but do not live. It happens tens of- or more likely hundreds of millions of- times a year. If you physically make a purchase in the state of California, you will pay California income tax even if you are a Minnesota resident like me. When I am in Wisconsin or Illinois to see family and friends, I pay sales tax to those states on every purchase. If I attempted to argue that the retailers were violating the Constitution by charging me sales tax as a non-resident, much hilarity would ensue. IMHO if I buy from Rivendell via their web site or by phone or mail order, I am making a purchase in California even though I am sitting on my sofa in St. Paul. It is simply how you define where the purchase is taking place: is it where the buyer is located or where the seller is located? There are four components to such transactions: the buyer, the seller, the good or service being sold and the point of exchange of money. When I buy something from Rivendell, three of those components are in Walnut Creek- the only component not there is me. There is no particular logical reason to base the application of sales tax exclusively on the location of the buyer- especially since sales tax is remitted by the seller, not the buyer. Through lobbying and the like, mail order retailers got themselves a tax loophole years ago and sooner or later that will go away. The only practical solution is for sellers to remit sales tax on all sales to their own states, because the accounting burden of remitting tax to potentially 50 states and perhaps territories would be enormous. There is a slightly deeper question about sales tax: who is being taxed? The seller or the buyer? While the tax is passed on to the customer in an itemized fashion, the tax is actually paid to the state by the retailer. IMHO there is no logical reason for Rivendell to have to cut a check to Minnesota for purchases I make; their sales tax should be paid to California. Years back when I was in France for a tour and then the next year for PBP, I noticed that their sales tax was invisibly included in the self price of items, which made it easier to predict the tab at the checkout. I believe the size of internet commerce, though, will take us eventually to a federal VAT/sales tax, which is probably the most fair tax since it is based on consumption. Re: [RBW] Re: Internet sales tax Rivendell...thoughts?
I agree with what you say, as far as it goes. If someone comes from another state to California, walks into Rivendell and buys one of those very fine pink possum hats, they pay California sales tax. So then if they go home and decide they want another possum hat, and they call up Rivendell to buy it, why not pay that same California tax? We know where Rivendell is. It's right in Walnut Creek, in California. But what about web-only stores? Where is Amazon? It's not anywhere, really. So where would they pay tax? The problem with online retailers not charging sales tax is more a problem of Amazon than of Rivendell. I pumped up both the Marathons in 60 pumps, and the Somas in 39 and 41 pumps respectively. There's not a whole lot of data here, but the approximate difference is total air volume is kinda fun to think about. http://flic.kr/s/aHsjFbUfmC The commute home on the new Alba setup. In short, I really love these bars on the Hunqapillar. It gives a great range of positions, and the older mtb long stem reaches me out for those pesky May headwinds that are a blowin'. The wide stance gives me a lot more control like the Midges, but with more variety in back angles (more comfort when I want it). The other change that has transformed this bike is to put V-brakes on the front. I had mad-shudder with the Tektro 720s, and it is completely gone with the V's. Yeah V's! Thanks Jim! Re: [RBW] Re: Seattle vs Portland Country Bike Rumble - June 1st
Can we get a Seattle headcount on this ride? Who's in so far? I can take one person with me in my pickemup truck. Also - are we aligned on a date/time yet? How about meeting up in Randle/Packwood at noonish on Saturday the 1st? Folks (like me) that are overnighting can head out Sunday from the campground, with others leaving Saturday night? [RBW] Re: Some details on the midwest Riv and Country Bike Rally
Jim, I would like to ride with you guys on Sunday. In order to keep a little peace at home, I would probably drive up that morning and meet you all at the campground instead of Preston. Do you have any idea what time you would be leaving the campground? Let me know, if you're coming from far away, how I can facilitate your visit. We had about 12 riders last year. This year I hope for 13 or 14 brave souls, at least. http://hiawathacyclery.blogspot.com/2013/05/some-details-about-upcoming-midwest.html -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
