Still looking for routes. Like to have some backcountry roads with some

[RBW] Large SaddleSack Initial Impressions

2013-06-11 Thread Deacon Patrick
I just did my initial ride with the Large SaddleSack. Since I am very familiar
with 15 months of using my small and xs SaddleSacks, as well as the TourSacks,
I know and trust the heartiness and rain/snow proof (I can trust my stuff will
stay dry without any added liners).

For me, the best gear becomes invisible when using it, so I only interact or
notice it when I am putting stuff in or taking stuff out, and even then it
should be simple and without hassle. That's certainly what my Hunqapiller does.
My only issue with the small SaddleSack is it is simply too small for
carrying a full day's worth of clothing and gear (shade tarp) for the range of
weather the Colorado Rockies tosses my way (40˚F temp range, sun, rain, snow,
hail, sleet are all possible in some combination, no matter what the forecast
calls for).

Loading it is simple. Minimal thought and brain energy required. As others have
commented, it's one big cavernous maw and you just fill it. Wonder where your
stuff is? One place. That's big. Taking less? It does that well too. Taking
more than goes inside? Irish straps and the d-rings on top take care of that.
Lock, Irish straps and miscellaneous always carry items fit graciously in the
side pockets. Maps in the removable pocket on top.

I think I've found the one bag (along with the xs on the front) that will live
on my Hunqapillar and look forward to getting it's loving abuse started.

[RBW] Re: Cowboy Trail Update

2013-06-11 Thread Kelly
The Ride was great. We didn't go all the way to Valentine but had a great
time none the less. Our first day was facing 35 mph winds and goatheads.
There were 6 flats on the first day. Five of those to one person.
Eventually she would have 9 flats over the trip. She was riding old JB's
that I had thrown on the Holdsworth to loan her for the trip unaware and
thoughtless to thorns. The only two bikes that didn't have flats were of
course the Marathon Plus Supremes. I had two flats and Dawn 1 flat running
Marathon Supremes. Others had a flat each running a wide spectrum of
tires. All accept the JB's had some level of puncture protection.

After two days out we stopped to take a detour to the Digs about 28 miles
outside of Atkinson. Then a rider got sick and with another big day of
winds nobody did anything accept party and go to the carnival. The next
day we went on to Stewart and turned around as big storms were due for the
weekend.
We split the group with half going on to the digs and the rest of us doing
the direct route back to Neligh. Talk about sweet... imagine averaging
20+ mph on a fully loaded tour bike without working up a sweat for the 40
mile day. We were on the road/hwy shoulder not the trail for this hammer
fest since there was a washed out bridge and the trial was about 20 yards
to the side of the road.

We had a great selection of bikes as well. 2 Hilbornes, 1 Atlantis (Dawn
my Wife) 1 Bombadil (me), 1 Bruce Gordon, 1 Long Haul Trucker, 1 Kona, 1
Giant OCR (my old tour bike that was sold) and 1 Holdsworth (a loaner from
me that hasn't sold yet) All the bikes did great and a good time had by
all.

I'll probably just install on one bike -- if we get more than a month of

Any ideas how the 45 mm longboards will fit onto this bike? I expect to
remove the flap, and I don't mind the fender just an inch or two above the

trust my stuff will stay dry without any added liners).

For me, the best gear becomes invisible when using it, so I only
interact or notice it when I am putting stuff in or taking stuff out, and
even then it should be simple and without hassle. That's certainly what my
Hunqapiller does. My only issue with the small SaddleSack is it is simply
too small for carrying a full day's worth of clothing and gear (shade tarp)
for the range of weather the Colorado Rockies tosses my way (40˚F temp
range, sun, rain, snow, hail, sleet are all possible in some combination,
no matter what the forecast calls for).

Loading it is simple. Minimal thought and brain energy required. As
others have commented, it's one big cavernous maw and you just fill it.
Wonder where your stuff is? One place. That's big. Taking less? It does
that well too. Taking more than goes inside? Irish straps and the d-rings
on top take care of that. Lock, Irish straps and miscellaneous always
carry items fit graciously in the side pockets. Maps in the removable
 pocket on top.

I think I've found the one bag (along with the xs on the front) that will
live on my Hunqapillar and look forward to getting it's loving abuse
 started.

New Condition!

Hi All,

A couple weeks ago, I posted about my interest in selling all the components I
purchased from Rivendell to create a Riv-like Paramount, similar to my Hilsen
that I ride all the time. One of their mechanics fitted all the components to
the Schwinn, but I rode the bike maybe three time for a total of two hours
tops. Tried to sell it, but evidently the market's pretty thin for a bike
kitted like this one was. I sent it back to Rivendell, where all the components
were taken off and the original Campy stuff was re-installed.

The items are listed on the invoice; my goal is to recapture at least 50% of
the price I paid. Ideally someone has a nice frame just ready for the
first-class Rivendell Treatment!

Just reply to the post if interested. Thanks!

Brain recovered enough for me to test a few things before a planned

I think I've found the one bag (along with the xs on the front) that
will live on my Hunqapillar and look forward to getting it's loving abuse

Re: [RBW] Large SaddleSack Initial Impressions

2013-06-11 Thread Anne Paulson
What you can't see well in Patrick's superb pictures is the inner
flap. The Large Saddlesack has the front to rear flap that buckles
down, nicely visible in the first two pictures. But it also has
another inner flap that goes from rear to front; it is opened and
hanging down in Patrick's first picture. When you overstuff the Large,
the front flap doesn't cover your entire load. But that's OK, because
the rear flap flaps forward and holds it all in. Maybe I'm not
explaining well, but that rear flap is genius; it wraps up your load
and keeps it all together.

Re: [RBW] Large SaddleSack Initial Impressions

2013-06-11 Thread PATRICK MOORE
The Medium has this flap, too and I agree, it's a great design addition.
I've overstuffed my Medium so that outer and inner flaps barely meet, but
as long as you can get a strap to hold the outer flap in place over the
inner one -- either the stock ones or a carry-along (I use an Irish) you
can practically double the load of the M.

But the Medium (the largest I'd want for my purposes) is too small in the
opening and too flat in height to be a true alternative to a good pannier.

I will add though that in my considerable experience, the M is certainly
the best no-rack saddlebag I've owned and, with careful packing (and that's
the rub) can carry almost as much as a single Ortlieb Packer.

[RBW] Re: SFR Dart Ride from June 8

2013-06-11 Thread Philip Williamson
How often do you shift the S3X on a ride like that? And in general, too.
How steep or long does a climb have to be to make you shift?
I found myself shifting once or twice on country rides for hills, but
fairly often in town for stoplights.

It looks like your friend is rolling with gears - do you ride together
mostly, or is there a yo-yo effect where you drop back and pass each other?
I'm thinking of putting an S3X back on my Quickbeam in order to ride with
some workmates at lunch. Three gears are overkill for my Santa Rosa -
Petaluma commute, and I wonder if I should just rig up a geared/coastable
bike to ride with folks and leave the Quickbeam alone.

[RBW] Re: So.Cal Vs Nor.Cal Rumble ?

2013-06-11 Thread dougP
Have a look at these routes:

http://mountainbikeslocounty.com/

One of the great features of this area is a lot of back roads that are
lightly traveled and go thru scenic areas. While there's plenty of
interesting un-paved stuff to choose from, even the paved bits getting
there are pretty nice.

The suggestion of Old Stagecoach up to Towers is excellent. This is the
ridgeline between Oso Valley and the valley where Paso Atascadero are.
One possible return is down Poly Canyon into the university. I continued
on the ridgeline to Hwy 41 on to Morro Bay. This requires crossing a
not-for-the-faint-of-heart rock slide (David, you ARE doing this!). Total
loop is roughly 40 odd miles, give or take.

I've done See Cyn from both sides suggest coming from the Avila Beach
end. The climb is more shaded more interesting, and you do the dirt on
the way up. Toward the end it ramps up steeply just before the summit, so
you sort of pop out on top and have this amazing view of Morro Rock to
one side and the Oso Valley to the other. You then get to enjoy a
screaming downhill on pavement with decent sitelines, etc.

Mitch's comments have encountered some interweb interference, so if they
don't pop up shortly I'll just copy paste them, with appropriate
attribution of course. You can't beat local knowledge.

Still looking for routes. Like to have some backcountry roads with some

[RBW] Alba/R559/Shimano Silver levers set-up question

2013-06-11 Thread Michael
Hi y'all,

I have tried Noodles and Moustaches on my new Sam.
Next I want to try Alba's with the Shimano Silver MTB levers as in the
stock riv build for that kit.
The bars and levers arrive tomorrow hopefully in the mail.

Any tips for setting up the brake levers with my Tektro R559 sidepull
brakes? Pretty straightforward? Anything to look out for?

[RBW] Re: Alba/R559/Shimano Silver levers set-up question

2013-06-11 Thread Joe Bernard
The only thing I can think of is that you don't need to set the pads
super-close like some Shimano SLR road levers require. You can give the
rims wiggle room, and the levers will still grab plenty of brake before
bottoming out on the bar.

Re: [RBW] Re: SFR Dart Ride from June 8

2013-06-11 Thread Eric Norris
Phil:

In its current configuration, I have a White Industries Eno freewheel on the
S3X hub, making it work like a standard 3-speed hub (e.g., coasting). With
hundreds of miles of testing on this system, it has proven to be quite
reliable. My hunch is that since the S3X hub doesn't have pawls inside, it's a
less complicated and more reliable system. The White Industries freewheel is
pretty bomb-proof.

Being able to coast meant that it was easier to stick with my Dart team members
on the downhills, which is where fixies are at a disadvantage.

Anyway ... on the 200K this past weekend (and the Davis Double a few weeks ago
... 200 miles with 7,000 feet of climbing), I used the top gear about 95% of
the time. On the ride to Berkeley, I didn't feel the need to gear down (I'm
running a 46x16 setup) until we climbed the hills south of Berkeley. There was
one steep pitch above 15% that I needed to walk up for a few yards, but other
than that I was able to ride the entire way. Your mileage, of course may vary;
I've been riding fixed gears over very tough courses for almost a decade now,
so I'm accustomed to pushing a big gear.
