It was brutal but beautiful climbing up to the clouds and snow! From there, we headed back down on an amazing (and fast) descent the way we came up. I stopped to take some pics I missed on the way up, filled up on coconut water, and then headed north through blueberry and raspberry fields to the Canadian border, and West to Peace Arch Park at the border crossing and the Pacific Ocean. After a nice jaunt along the coast, we headed back home. I suffered on the last 100k with a left knee that wasn't cooperating, and a front derailer that broke after the Baker climb, but I mustered that last 50 miles and enjoyed the feeling of pulling in after a full day of awesome scenery in perfect weather! Awesome score Tony.Like others have said a trade for a 61 could probably be found without much trouble, but then again the Atlantis has a low BB and a slacker ST angle, so even with fat tires you might end up fitting fine on it. Re: [RBW] Re: AHH 2.0 w/ Modern Looking Nitto Rack
It's news to me that center pull (or, for that matter, cantilever) brakes have a complicated cable routing that interferes with handlebar bags. I have had four bikes with such brakes, two with center pull (one bolt-on Mafac Raid, the other brazed-on Paul Racers) and two with cantilevers (wide profile old-time Shimano Deore XT) that I've used the largest size Berthoud bags with, entirely without problems due to cable routing. The last time I had the bike with brazed-on Paul Racers serviced, I had the pads changed and in the process the LBS managed to totally ruin the feel of the brakes: spongy beyond belief. I brought the bike back, and a more experienced mechanic was able to restore the original feel (without excess squeal, by the way) in a matter of a few minutes. Anywho, I bought it, via ebay from the original owner, who rode it as a daily commuter for 20+ years and across the US twice. When it arrived, I found the the seat tube was cracked where the post was inserted. Judging by the dents in the set post, it looked like someone at the shop that packed the bike used a big set of Channel Lock pliers to twist a stuck post out. I took the bike to Bilenky Cycle works in Philly and they fixed the crack and did an amazing job of matching the paint around the seat lug. It is nice that steel frame can be repaired. Anyway, I just put a new Nitto stem on from another list member and managed to get a set of cream Longboards on it. Fenders w/ 29mm tires on this bike were bit of challenge/puzzle but it all worked out in the end. Also after talking w/ Grant at Riv HQ on the phone, he reminded me that it was easy to modify the Shimano bar end pods and a couple of down tube shifter stops to convert the original Suntour micro-ratchet shifters to bar ends. Doug - I think you're right about the WTB posts! Wheels are the first priority... might have to settle for some economy ones right off though. The 'treat' was the frame itself in this case!! :) In the end though I think I'll try building up the wheels myself, I did the 650B wheels on my Trek over the winter 'under supervision' from a mechanic buddy. I think I'd be ok doing it again and having him check my work, definitely not as fast and (I'm sure) amazing as a Rich-built set but I like getting my hands dirty! Re: [RBW] Re: Stan's to Paris-Roubaixs on Ram
I'm pretty sold on the stuff. After a couple of recent experiences even more so. I went to fix a slow leak in a Hetre-shod tube, and once I found the hole, I realized my tube glue was dried out. Again. Then I noticed that the tube had a removable core so I removed said core, added a jigger of Stan's, pumped up the bare tube enough to roughly triple it's size shook/spun it for a moment, and the hole sealed right up. I then deflated and installed it, and promptly added Stan's to all the tubes I could (that had removable cores). A few days later, riding my new Stag with Stan-tubed PariMotos, I heard a juicy hissing sound when riding through a rough, gravely road construction area. It stopped after a few revolutions and I pressed on. Then I heard it again. It again quickly stopped and on I went. When I stopped at a park a mile or two later I spun the wheel and found a notable cut in the casing. The tire was still damp around it but it was holding air fine. On I went. I've had similar experiences with my tubeless mountain bike tires as well. Q-tubes brand tubes (QBP?) all seem to have removable cores. I won't buy any that don't feature them from now on! Like these: http://www.ebikestop.com/q_tubes_650b_x_35_43mm_32mm_presta_valve_tube_584mm_etrto-TU6870.php You can kind of tell when Stan's needs refreshing by putting your ear by the bottom of the tire (in a repair stand or whatever) and spinning it. If you hear a liquid running sound, you're good. If you hear more of a rolling debris sort of sound, it could probably use an ounce or two. When in doubt, if it's been hot or you haven't topped it off in a couple of months, it can't hurt to dump in a little. Add a little if you get a bad puncture, too--you always lose some before it seals. Steve On Sat, Aug 3, 2013 at 11:41 AM, Patrick Moore bertin...@gmail.com wrote: Thanks. That is the one problem, so far, with Stan's -- having to monitor the drying. I use it in tubes, so at worst it will mean replacing a pair every 3 months or so, but at the rate I was getting flats before Stan's, that is considerably less than the cost in patches that I was using. FWIW, a search for correct amount of Stan's led to a quote from a Stan's rep who said, in effect, 2 oz for every tire. I put just 1 oz in my 30 mm P-R, and the full 2 in 55 mm Exiwolfs. Re: [RBW] Re: Stan's to Paris-Roubaixs on Ram
Great stuff, innit? About non-removable Presta cores: it's not hard, just a bit more inconvenient, to remove them, and you ought to have all of your equipment near at hand: Stan's with nozzle, pliers, rag. Hod the tube with secondary hand pinching tube just below valve core. Unscrew the locknut as far as possible. Use pliers to force nut off post. Let core drop into tube, catching and holding it with secondary hand. Insert nozze of Stan's dispenser over stem, add sealant, wipe as needed, then use both hands to coax core back up the stem -- I push the stem down over the core and then carefully invert stem to let core fall back into place. Push locknut back onto post and use pliers to force back onto threads. Voila. On Mon, Aug 5, 2013 at 7:32 AM, Steven Frederick stl...@gmail.com wrote: I'm pretty sold on the stuff. Steve On Sat, Aug 3, 2013 at 11:41 AM, Patrick Moore bertin...@gmail.comwrote: Thanks. On Fri, Aug 2, 2013 at 11:50 AM, Ron Mc bulldog...@gmail.com wrote: I usually pump my tires every 3 to 4 days - latex tubes go down by definition. Seems unlikely it's a new hole since I didn't ride the bike, so I assumed the old one dried out. All is good for now. How did you discover that it had dried? Flats? Re: [RBW] Re: Greetings! - 64cm Atlantis?
Handspun wheels are priced very well... that might be the right way to go right off the bat. I'll have to check in at the co-op first to see if there are any used but tune-able set's available. Any Atlantis/Hunq riders out there that throw 29er tires on occasion? I'd be curious if there are any rim recommendations, 36 hole, heavy duty types that would do year-round commuting (paved) and some weekend off-road activity... on a 250lb guy! [RBW] Re: Crazy Idea: Riv National Jamboree
Yes, I am curious as to who has a bid in for this Jam as well. As far as can tell, Jim Thill has the only close-to-formal-bid. Fall in Northern Wisconsin/Michigan Upper Penninsula/Northern Lower Penninsula with camping. While I can vouch for the beauty of these areas, I can also vouch that they are another day's drive from a major airport (MSP, Milwaukee, or Detroit) I'd like to assist with a Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP) bid during the summer but because this is the busiest time for me at work, I can't take the lead. How many could do the week after Labor Day? I would suggest a home base that's an hour or less from the airport along the st. croix river or mississippi river, etc. (for MSP locals: Stillwater, Redwing, Scandia, Marina on St. Croix, etc.) There could be hotels, BB's, close camping, etc. A good retreat center could be a good idea. What a timely post! I am actually in the same dilemma, where I have a Supernova up front, and wanted to get a fender-mounted taillight. Alas, I only recently came to realize that my headlight is only compatible with a Supernova tail light. I had no idea you could place the Supernova taillight into BM housing. The rack works fine with my size 11.5 feet and my Arkel Utility Basket rear bags. I haven't tried duck tape but I have used gaffer's tape, it is used in the photo industry to attach things like lights, grip gear, wires etc. to walls, floors, etc. anything that could have the finish marred by regular tape. +1 on gaffer tape being a superior product for not leaving gooey residue. But very elegant glued-on shrink-fit tubing can be a super elegant solution. The famous Anton Tutter does wiring jobs for rando bikes, most notably JPWeigle. You can seek out his shrink-fit solutions on flickr. I can't post flickr links from work but try looking for somervillebikes as the user handle. Maybe somervillebike. Otherwise email me off-list and I can try to get you an introduction. That's pretty slick... but still, if the wiring is black, you can see the black on top of the bright colored bike paint. [RBW] Re: Greetings! - 64cm Atlantis?
A few thoughts: I'm 6'3 with a 91pbh, short torsoed. I would have fit on a 64c but chose a 62c for a couple of reasons: the top tube was slightly shorter and fit by reach better and I wanted a bit more stand over. If you've done any challenging off-loading, you'll have experienced the need to hop off the pedals and touch down on uneven ground. If the bike is on ground higher than where your feet land, a bit more standover can be more uh. accommodating? I'm also running 40c tires so that adds to the equation somewhat. On the road or light duty trails it's less of an issue. I think in the end what you'll be comfortable on depends on your riding needs will be. Given what's been shared on this thread, I'd be inclined to look for a trade for a 62c. On Saturday, August 3, 2013 8:53:39 PM UTC-7, Tony DeFilippo wrote: Hi there! My PBH is 92, 6' tall... might be a bit of a stretch for me so I'll have to see it in person. The prospect of maybe owning one of these fine frames is pretty cool. Can anyone fill me in on the 64cm size...? Anyway, hopefully the seller measured 'large' or I shrink a bit tonight... :) We'll see! I'm 6'-2 with a PBH of 90 and ride a 62 Hunqapillar (no idea how that compares to the Atlantis). I do a significant amount of pretty technical single track and I love the frame at this size. Not too big, not too small. I wouldn't want it any bigger for testicular reasons, and and smaller for ride and feel and stiffness reasons. Re: [RBW] Re: duct tape to enamel paint
Hopefully this won't get me banned from the list, but I've been using self-fusing silicone tape to finish my gel tape bar wraps for a few years now. Three strikes for me already for not using cotton tape, twine and shellac... It's available in colors, though I only do black bar wrap (strike 4?), so black silicone tape. It's fast and neat, you cut about a 6 length, stretch it tight as you wind around the bar, next to the handlebar ferrule. Since it has no adhesive, there's no oozing adhesive later, like electrical tape, and since it fuses/sticks to itself, it never peels or separates. Seems impervious to normal temperature extremes, doesn't loosen/degrade in hot temps or solidify/crack in low temps. Jersey temps, anyway, up to 100deg in summer, down to zero in winter. Never thought of it for lighting/computer cable wrap since the native width is 1, kinda wide for cable wrap. You could cut it lengthwise, I suppose, but being gel-like, it could be a little squirrely to cut lengthwise? Hopefully this won't get me banned from the list If you get banned for that, I quit! :-) If there is one thing this group should be zealously opposed to, it is zealotry. Besides, you've got several things going for you that trump any orthodox interpretation of Rivish acceptability. 1. You insist on being comfortable, and don't care what people tell you on how to get there 2. You thought of it and did it yourself 3. Rescue tape is MUSA! I'm going to order a roll right now! [RBW] Re: Bleriot bb width with Sugino XD2 triple?
I think your typical shimano 113 is asymmetric so it only gives you the 3mm extra space on the non drive side over the 110mm BB. So if you need extra space on the drive side, you would need the 113 + a 2 mm spacer on the drive side. This is the setup I have on a 1993 MB-3, and I would think the Bleriot has narrower stays than an MB-3. -Dave J Northern Neck, VA On Monday, August 5, 2013 12:54:03 AM UTC-4, Michael wrote: Thinkin' of a new drivetrain and need to know. [RBW] Re: Bleriot bb width with Sugino XD2 triple?
I think I may have screwed that measurement up and the 113mm is asymmetrical with 3mm more on the drive side compared to the 110mm. The 115mm is symmetrical and has the same drive side length as the 113mm, but has more on the non drive. Not all cranks are symmetrical however so I'm not sure what is the best for the Sugino. I've used 110, 113, and 115 in the past with the XD-2, sometimes I use a spacer on the 1.5 - 2mm drive side for more granny gear clearance. Here are a couple of bad photos of how I did it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/76454470@N05/8358830287/ It was a pretty simple job and I did not get worked up about it being pro level work. I removed the existing light's internals, sawed the Supernova tail light mounting tabs off so it would fit inside the housing, ran the wire out the back and used a heavy duty 2 part epoxy to attach the light the the back plate of the housing. after the epoxy cured. I surrounded the light w/ silicone to take up some dead space and to help adhere the light as well. Since I run my wire's externally, I ran the wire over the fender and down the fender stay.
