[RBW] Re: Shut down nixes ride opportunities

2013-10-07 Thread ascpgh
Finally made it back home from my recent trip where I experienced shut down
limitations to riding. Got home and and able to load some pics:
https://plus.google.com/photos/109160474815391208206/albums/5931982675739806833?authkey=CL2ZlpWVtKnRlgE

Weather was middle 80s, humidity 75-85%, some wind in the afternoons. Rode
out of my folk's house into town and then varying routes from there.

The two mountains flanking Central Avenue in downtown are the classic rides
around here. Comparatively I clocked six and a half miles pedaling from my
folks house by the lake to town. Adding the two mountains' summit loops
brought me 26 miles round, adding Black Snake Road west from the end of
Whittington Avenue over to the National Park Community College and back
gave me 36 miles round trip.

After the shut down, the uniformed NPS went about making sure no enjoyment
could be derived by anyone from anything remotely in their jurisdiction. I
did have one ranger attempt to turn me around on a city street. Same
problem I recall as a 16 year old driving my MG around the town and
National Park all those years ago.

The steepness of the climbs in Arkansas' mountains cannot be overstated
other than in total gain. The region was a geologic uplift area. The Ozarks
formed from the erosion of a nearby uplifted plateau, the Ouachita Range is
a generally east-west result of folds subsequent to collision between large
continental plates that also ended the inland reach of the Gulf of Mexico
that existed long enough to form the sediment layers which are horizontally
intact in the Ozarks (every climb/descent crosses the jagged ends of the
exposed layers). The Ouachita range buckled early and once had elevations
equal to the Rockies but weathered away.

Climbs now max out at Mt. Magazine's 2700' summit but are generally
1200-1500' at their tops. Views seem unimpressive since no craggy, pointed
tops are seen, just somewhat flat and even summits across your panorama. On
summiting, you really have a bit of let down having really linked some
steep pitches.

The folds of the Ouachitas created cracks allowing hot liquid rock to come
up, leaving mineral oddities like the massive Quartz crystals, novaculite,
iron minerals and pathways by which surface water can percolate deeply
enough into the crust to reach the hot stuff and be driven back to the
surface through conduits holding the heated water under pressure enough, in
a liquid state, powered to the surface as hot springs. An area of natural
beauty and oddity if you pay attention. A bike makes a great mode of travel
to experience much of it.

Net impression is that it worth taking the bike. First time on a long trip
without a bike on a roof rack which was great because 11 out of 15 hours
were in pouring rain and without the subsequent loss of fuel economy.

Great riding last week, but yesterday it was determined as necessary to

west. Oh, well. Was nice while I was able to get in, pictures when I get
home to upload. Got in a couple days of 35-40 mile rides in the Ouachita

That's a dumb fix in the middle of a bike path! I should think that the

damages. After all, it *is* a bike path.

I got my *rear* wheel into the gap between sections of a cattle grid one
afternoon 20 years ago, at speed, and did a head-over-heels tumble with the
bike having enough momentum to launch out of the crack and tumble over me
-- I recollect seeing it cartwheel ahead of me down the road. I was very
kindly picked up by two Deliverance types in an old pickup, who were
taking their Harley's valves for grinding (big!) and who dropped me off at
the hospital (where I worked as PR Director; Gallup, NM). Just lacerations
and bruised ribs in that one.

 Hey Folks-

I've had this idea since doing a mixed terrain ride down in Manny's home
stomping grounds in the Southern East Bay, back in the beginning of June.
Manny stopped by the shop where I work the other day to kick my ass into
 gear about it

Northern East Bay Mixed Terrain Ride: Sunday, October 6th, 9:30am. A
ride in the classic Riv style, showing off the best the Oakland, Berkeley,
and Richmond hills have to offer.

My thought is that we could congregate at a local coffee joint, the
Fellini Coffeebar (attached to a restaurant called Pizza Moda), on the
corner of University Avenue and Acton St. around 9:00am for coffee and
pastries. Fellini is three blocks south of the North Berkeley BART
station, and there is ample free parking in the surrounding neighborhood
for those that have to drive. Around 9:30 or so we'll swing by the BART
station to pick up any latecomers before heading for the hills.

My idea for the route is start in the south, heading up the classic East
Bay road climb of Tunnel Rd. A good warm-up and great views of the whole
Bay Area. From the top of Tunnel we'll hit up the trails in Sibley Volcano
park, descending down to the bottom of Fish Ranch Rd. From there, it's
more road climbing on Fish Ranch and Grizzly Peak Blvd. to the summit of
Grizzly Peak (great views of Mt. Diablo!) and the upper reaches of Tilden
Park, before descending on trail down to the aptly named Inspiration Point
on Wildcat Canyon Rd. From there it's more trails down through Wildcat
Canyon, heading north. Depending on the time and how punchy we're feeling
we'll loop back by climbing up to the paved Nimitz Way Trail, which returns
us to Inspiration Point, and then back to Berkeley via Wildcat Canyon Rd.
and Spruce St. If people are interested there are tons of great options
 around Berkeley for post-ride refreshment.

Truth be told, I haven't taken the time to map this out or calculate
mileage or elevation change. The route is probably short on mileage (maybe
30 or 40 something ?) but big on climbing (at least 2000'?), with most of
the climbing happening in the first half of the ride. Definitely bring
food. Luckily, there are many places along the route to refill on water.
There are also many easy spots to bail back to Berkeley or Oakland if you
need to cut it short for whatever reason.

The route is totally doable on any number of Riv-ish all-rounders.
Definitely bring something with low gears for climbing. The off-road
portions are mostly fire trail, but can be quite steep and washboarded, so
wider tires are definitely recommend. I'll be doing it on my Long Haul
Trucker with Alba bars and 700x42 file treads.

Please let me know if you're planning to come along so I have a sense of
how many to expect and who too look for.

Finally made it back home from my recent trip where I experienced shut

Weather was middle 80s, humidity 75-85%, some wind in the afternoons. Rode
out of my folk's house into town and then varying routes from there.

The two mountains flanking Central Avenue in downtown are the classic
rides around here. Comparatively I clocked six and a half miles pedaling
from my folks house by the lake to town. Adding the two mountains' summit
loops brought me 26 miles round, adding Black Snake Road west from the end
of Whittington Avenue over to the National Park Community College and back
gave me 36 miles round trip.

The spot will look familiar to you if you've been gracious to view other
trips -- but not these colors. Wow. Visual symphony of color. Glowing gold
and orange with brilliant deep blue sky above and deep rich evergreen
dappled around and behind with grasses of tan and rust all combine to
delight the eye and feed the soul.

I base camped, having a lazy ride in as my family hiked in (more technical
than they all like to ride -- yet) to spend the day with me before they
departed back home (we don't yet have gear for everyone for the 20˚F
nights). They departed in the late afternoon of day one and I settled in
for a few days of solitude and brain cushion recovery.

Day 2, I woke at dawn, though the sun would still be 2 hours peaking over
the hill (what I get for camping on the west side of a 14,000 peak!). My
choices were to be lazy in my warm bag or get up and ride myself warm. I
rode. Climbing that next ridge will always warm you up! Once I couldn't
ride up the steep trail of Sentinel, I tied off the Hunqapillar and hoofed
it the rest of the way to the tundra. Amazing views of the Sangre de Cristo
and Collegiante ranges, as well as Lost Creek Wilderness, and South Park.
After returning to my bike, I felt good so headed to Horsethief Falls,
getting back to camp about 5pm. Standard day's food for dinner of beef
 jerky, butter, and dried potatoes.

Day three: a leisurely breakdown of camp as I wanted things to thaw/dry
before I hauled out extra weight, then up and over the three ridges before
the trail ended and I rode Edlow road and Hwy 24 back home.

Amazing trip and my brain has a bit more cushion again! We'll see if the
snow allows more overnight trips or not this year.

My second eldest daughter had a blast taking photos of me riding, and she
has a real artistic eye emerging.

[RBW] Re: Dyno - SP Dynamo Hub

2013-10-07 Thread Tom Virgil
Hi Kelly,

I am contemplating wheel builds. Thinking 32 hole, Velocity polished A23
rims (they seem to address some problems with Velocity Synergy in high
dish). Of course I want dynamo lighting. When all is said and done, it is
an expensive thing to do. Got to looking around and found Shutter
Precision. http://www.sp-dynamo.com/index.html (SP) I was also cued by
the appearance of an SV-8/Velocity Synergy rim offering in New Stuff at
the Rivendell site. SV-8 looks to be very price competitive. PV8 seems to
be build like a brick outhouse but loses the price point advantage. And
there is the question of getting them in the U.S at all. That being said,
now that you have had the SD-8 for a year, how is it holding up? They do
make some bold claims on their web site. There are some favorable reviews
(google search, Bicycle Quarterly).

My use case is front and rear lighting for diminishing light following
sunset. I doubt that I will randonneur hours into the evening.

Thank you,

Tom

It's also smaller and lighter than the SON28 but I couldn't tell that from
riding either. Overall my first impressions are that this is a viable
alternative to the SON at 1/2 the price. Guess time will tell how it's
 longevity is.

Here are some photos... not good ones but photos anyway.

[RBW] Re: First Meeting of The Sunrise Coffee Tea Club

2013-10-07 Thread Tom Virgil
Hi cc,

The more I see of this, the more I like it. I am highly motivated to do
it. I know the perfect place in the Black Mountain Open Space Park near my
home that I want to be on Saturday morning, October 13. Wish there were a
few more Rivsters in the area to share, but solitude at dawn is not a bad
thing. Planning to take small Trangia stove, Zumbar Humming Bird Coffee,
French Press with titanium cup in a handlebar bag, and a great attitude.

If all that works, maybe, just maybe, a salmon scramble in the Trangia,
Some veggie to mix in, and a goodly portion of baguette to munch through
the coffee and meal.

Life can be good.

Best regards,

Tom

 So, morning, or sunrise coffee.

I left home around 6:30am and rode roughly along this route:

At least up to mile 3.2. It's a pretty straight climb, but not too long.

I reached the viewpoint, in time for sunrise, and enjoyed the view while
 boiling water and grinding coffee:

It was majestic, and very peaceful. And the coffee was strong:

Afterwards I had a fun ride down the hill, where I ate a delicious salmon
 scramble.

So the point being, I loved how a s24o allowed me to fit camping trips
where there was dead time. Now, I'm horrible at getting up in the
morning, and meditating, but I love coffee, and riding bikes, and cooking
outside, so this was the perfect motivator.

I think I'm gonna do this on a regular basis. Sunrise Coffee Tea Club.
It's social, but not really social. You're all invited.

[RBW] Re: Northern East Bay Mixed Terrain Ride-- Sunday, October 6th

2013-10-07 Thread Manuel Acosta
Here's my pictures.

Jeremy did a great job setting this up. We started off with some great
coffee and roll up our way towards the dirt.
The dirt was loose and fast. Made for smiles and laughs. Great to find new
routes around the east bay.

Pictures proved that dirt is always a good option.

[RBW] Re: Night ride, inaugural, for SP dynohub and Cyo N Plus combo.

2013-10-07 Thread Tom Virgil
Hi Patrick,

Good to know I am asking about Shutter Precision (SP) dynamos on another
thread. I am OK with buzz. I am not OK with shimmy.

Tonight I put in a brief 10.5 mile augmentation to my 12-mile errand ride
this afternoon, taking out the Ram with the newly installed SP dynohub and
the Cyo N Plus -- both bought NIB but used from listers, for which much
thanks -- out on the once-again pitch dark Rio Grande bike path.

Two insouciant coyotes this evening; no racoon.

Frankly, I can't tell any difference either in drag or in illumination
compared to the much more expensive Son 20 and Edeluxe combo -- except that
the latter comes up to full brightness at a very slightly higher speed. I
read that the Cyo uses the same working bits as the Edeluxe, so no surprise
 there.

I think that, just perhaps, I detect a sort of very light buzz or hum from
the SP at speed that I don't pick up from the SON 20; it's not rough enough
to call it a vibration, and I notice it only when I am picking nits. In
fact, unless I try to discern it, I don't discern it -- meaning that for
 practical purposes it doesn't exist.

What wonderful lights compared to what was available just 10 years ago! My
first modern foray into dyno lights a good 8 years ago was with a SON 28
 (36 hole hub cleverly laced into a 28-spoke rim) and a home-made,
Cree-powered light made by a fellow lister. It was certainly bright enough,
but it was just a flashlight beam and I decided that it wasn't as good as
two cheap LED battery lights. I experimented with a number of these until
the advent three or four years later of the Fly, which, hugely superior to
my flashlight-type LEDs, led in turn to the even better Edeluxe and Cyo.
The Edeluxe II is said to be even brighter and more broad -- but at that
level of perfection, it quite honestly doesn't really matter to me. I
suppose that, for off road use. the E II might be desirable, but I'm quite
happy with what I now have.
