The bike was the right tool for this job. Did forget about the one re-route from the old railroad grade. Only about a mile and a half, but basically all up and down. Was okay heading north, but on the way back ended up using the two foot gear for one section where I couldn't carry momentum. Of course, it was at that point where Dave Siskind went flying past me heading north. By the time it dawned on me who it was, he was gone, so can't say whether he was on his custom Rivendell or not. [RBW] Re: First Century!
I have found that the thicker the padding, the more moisture gets absorbed, and the worse the effect on long rides. I cut out the liners of all my shorts and now wear them with Andiamo skins. I also use Boudreax's Butt Paste on longer rides with pretty good results as both a lube and for moisture protection. The other consideration, and I'm only speaking from my own experience, is that your contact area may not have been toughened up enough for such a drastic increase in mileage. I have an SA also, and it's not quite as comfortable as my Champion Flyer on my roadish bike, and downright uncomfortable on my upright tourer. It was one of the early ones, and it has stretched considerably. I guess I'm saying that I wouldn't give up on it just yet. My next bike will be an adventurer tourer, and I think I'll use the SA for that. On Tuesday, October 8, 2013 3:12:37 PM UTC-4, Tony DeFilippo wrote: Thanks everyone! CC - I've definitely thought about the SAA saddle being new-to-me. I did two 25 mile rides and about a month of off and on commuting in addition to this century so it's not a complete 'new' unit. But my B67 took that much and more before it became comfortable. The reason I'm ready to pull the plug on the SAA is that reportedly the advantage on them is there isn't a break in period, they aren't supposed to change much. And it seems like my sit bones are just plain wider than the saddle at that point. Doc - I was in the same pair of shorts with a padded chamois type liner for the whole ride. You bring up a good point, it wasn't a particularly hot and sweaty day but changing might have made a difference. I wasn't using any other lubricant's either... I'm not to fond of that idea to be honest. I think I'd like to try and find an all-day comfort saddle that doesn't require that. Maybe that is too optimisitic though. A second pair of shorts is a great idea though. Thanks! Tony -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls
I'm going to start playing around a little bit with centerpull brakes on at least one of my caliper brake equipped bikes. I bought a pair of the snazzy Gran Compe 610s and the tiny optional front rack from Velo Orange. They will be replacing Tektro R539 on my budget Roadeo. Re: [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls
I've used center pulls, single pivots, and dual pivots, not to mention cantis and vs, and haven't found centerpulls any better, or much worse, than any of the others. No magic, IME. In fact, I found the old Dura Aces (probably re-inscribed Tourneys) better than the Mafac Racers, but neither as powerful as a good modern Nashbar single pivot; all with salmon pads. (I had been running a Dura Ace cp on the front of the old Motobecane grocery fixie, as the single brake, but I found that, with heavy loads and a steep hill, the DA -- pulled by a modern Shimano aero lever -- would retard to a point in the lever travel and then retard no further despite pulling harder. The replacement dual pivot did retard more as you pulled further on the lever.) Of course, on the one hand, the relative merits of the CPs might have been due to hangars and housing; OTOH, the Nashbar SP stopped better with the same housing and required no hangar. I jumped on the front rack wagon for a brief while with an old TA rack of which the VO is probably a copy. I had one on my errand Riv for a while to supplement a rear rack, but it didn't really do me any good, since it was big enough only to support a rack bag that was about the size of a Banana Bag, and I preferred to have my front end unencumbered unless the encumbrance could carry a more worthwhile load, whereas the rear rack carried all that I needed beyond the large saddle wedge. BTW, I have the early Ruthworks small bag-for small front rack available for sale or trade if anyone is interested. Re: [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls
While I agree this rack is a TA copy, let me be clear. I bought it from VO, but it's not a VO rack. It is the Dia Compe Gran Compe ENE front rack. When you Patrick were playing around with your front rack in 2011, a few listers here posted their pictures of this Grand Compe ENE rack broken at the tangs. The thread is there for all to see in the archives. The most efficient keyword to search on is the classic Patrick Mooresque: Innit, as in Innit the cutest little rack. [RBW] 50mm tires
I finally have a bike that will take 50mm tires (1995 Trek 820). I bought this bike as a test vehicle for 26 wheels, which I've never ridden before, but am interested in on a high dollar bike. My first inclination is to go with 50mm Big Apples but Schwalbe makes several other tires in the 50mm size with the Supreme being of particular interest. Is the 50mm Big Apple significantly cushier than the 50mm Supreme? Is it the width or is there something different about the design of the Big Apple that makes it more comfortable. The tires will be primarily for pavement and I want as light and slick as possible with max comfort. The Supreme wins in the light slick category but I don't know if it is as comfortable. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Off-pavement riding
I think the addition of gravel grinder or cyclocross into the big bike stores will be a welcomed addition to any rider's fleet, but the problem I have with really most of the bigger manufacturers is that they always sell through racing. Cyclocross is a race, gravel grinder is being sold as a race. I just don't get it or the allure of racing pushing bikes and using racing as a selling point. That is one, and not really the biggest, reason I love Riv. I got to ride with a friend who is getting into cycling this past weekend. We did a 15mph or so ramble through some flat country roads I know. He couldn't keep asking about my bike (sam hillborne with Pari Motos, quill stem, leather saddle, friction shifting ect...and why I picked a bike like that for riding. He was on a Motobecane road bike, 23mm tires and a saddle that hurts his behind. He complains about comfort on that bike and I just had to nicely school him on what makes a bike comfortable, why I chose the ride I had, why my bike is comfortable for 100 miles while he gets saddle sores and an aching back. He just can't get the you have to be fast or at least trying to be fast when you are riding out of his head. I think my next bike is going to be a Yves Gomez or some other riv with upright bars and some fatty wide tires, fully fendered, awesome lookingand I am going to ride it on the singletrack around here. I just love coming across people on their carbon wonderbikes and having them see, maybe for the first time, how you can be comfortable and carefree without needing to be racing all the time. You can actually have fun on the bike without having to race or look like you are racing. Anyway, I am kind of ranting because I am bored at work and want to be riding my Riv. In the end, bikes that will allow wider tires and be ridden on the road and gravel are always good. They probably will not be as nice as my Rivs though. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls
Thanks for the replies. I think I'm with all of you: I've used all kinds and they all work fine. None are dramatically better or worse. At least for everything but centerpulls. I've never done a nice centerpull setup. I understand being forced into using cheapie centerpulls for various reasons. What I was curiously looking for was something more specific. For example, I've seen many A Homer Hilsens using Silver Sidepulls, and I've seen many A Homer Hilsens using Paul Racer centerpulls. I'd love to hear somebody say I took off the Silver Sidepulls and installed Paul Racers and the result was . Or, I've seen many Roadeos with Tektro 539s, and a few with Paul Racer M. I wanted to see if anybody specifically swapped from dual pivot to a quality centerpull and thought it changed anything. That's what I'm doing, and I'll certainly share what my observations are. Anyway, I did it partially out of curiosity about centerpulls. I also did it because I wanted a cleanly installed small front rack. I hated running P-clamps with a Marks rack on this bike. I also did it because I think it will open up the fender area. I also did it because I was/am inspired by Sumehra's custom mixte with braze on centerpull brakes. If I love centerpulls, then braze on centerpulls on a custom might make it onto my bucket list. 1. If braking is a wash, and I gain the use of a proper handlebar bag, and improve fender clearance, that's a big win 2. If braking performance is better, and the rack breaks under my handlebar bag, and fender clearance is worse, then I won't know what to do 3. If braking performance is worse, and the rack breaks, then I'll whine like a baby I'm investing a lot in making this setup really as nice as I can. Paul Funky Monkey hangers front and rear are rock solid. These $170 Gran Compe brakes are beefy CNC, not unlike Pauls. The pads come with salmon inserts and accept nice koolstop replacement inserts. Good cables and housing, nice rims. Everything should work great. [RBW] Re: Off-pavement riding
I think this is just the big companies trying to catch up with the little guys who've been doing this already... Like Riv or Salsa/Surly/Soma. I'm hoping it will bring out more suitable tires and rims. And, of course this was what mountain biking was all about in the 80's. Rigid steel bikes with lugs, comfortable for all kinds of riding, before shocks came on the market and the whole downhill thing screwed up everything. ~mike On Wednesday, October 9, 2013 10:33:50 AM UTC-7, ayjaydee wrote: What are your thoughts on this sudden discovery of the pleasures of off-pavement riding by the gravel specific bike manufacturers. Re: [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls
Linear pulls are certainly powerful and easy to set up, at least, as long as they are not the cheap ones, which are horrible to set up since the cheap springs mean that they never stay put; I've seen at least on pair, on a WalMart bike, that literally could not be adjusted properly -- the springs could not hold enough tension -- they were plastic, not elastic. But IME they don't modulate as well as the best cantilevers or side or center pulls, also properly set up. The best brakes in the world, bar none -- and I've used all -- were the IRD cantis on the Sam HIll, set up by Riv. Powerful, felt just right, and modulated better than anything else I've used. OTOH, I prefer disks for off road use, as much to spare my rims as for any other reason -- an issue if you use expensive, boutique rims as I do. The worst brakes, OTOH, were also cantis, and I don't know why they were so bad: Mafac cantis, both the single and the tandem (longer arms) version. Useless with salmon pads, modern levers, good hangars, and after both I and a shop played around with straddles and pad adjustment. Well, the front road BB7 was just as bad. Re: [RBW] Off-pavement riding
I wish marketers would push the country bike esthetic in addition to the cyclocross/gravel grinder esthetic. I end up riding my bike on a lot of the same trails and fire roads that my husband hikes on. And while people run on those trails, there is also a hiking equipment market for people who just want to go for a nice walk: maybe a hat with a full brim to keep the sun off your face even though it's not aerodynamic, maybe hiking poles to support you on steep downhills even though they are extra weight, maybe more heavy-duty pants because they look good and are comfortable, and so forth. Nobody comes up to my husband and says, Isn't that hat HEAVY? Doesn't it slow you down? Doesn't it catch the wind? They know he is out there to enjoy himself. But people often question my bike. Don't they realize I'm out there to enjoy myself? I made this exact swap from Silver side pulls to Pauls center pulls. When I built my Hilsen, I used the Silvers I already had from a Bleriot. They set up SUPER easy, look great and I used up to a 42 width knobbie (IRC XC Slick 700x42) that I could still squeeze past the pads with little effort. I only upgraded to the Pauls thinking that with all the hype and expense, they HAD to be more powerful and would open wider. I tinkered with those things more than any other brake I've ever used and never got them to feel as good as the Silvers, and if anything they opened up less as I had to wiggle the same tire set up pretty good to get it through. They certainly weren't horrible, look kind of industrially cool, and have the USA factor included in the price, but based purely on performance and set up I would choose the Silvers no question. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I actually see it as a nice trend to help create a market for more wide tires. Re: [RBW] 50mm tires
On Big Apple vs. Supreme. On the old version of the Big Apple, there was a Liteskin version. That seems to have been better riding than the Supreme. My wife has a set on her bike and she has voiced a preference over either the Supreme or the regular Big Apple. As to the Big Apple itself, the current tire is a different design. Haven't tried it so no opinion. For th lightest 50mm tires, I like the Schwalbe Kojak tires. No tread at all and fairly lightweight at 460 grams. No real protection and I've had flats when I've run them. Then again, I'm probably way too heavy for the optimum use of the tire. Even so, they have a plush ride. Probably not as nice as tubeless Hetres, but still good. Re: [RBW] Off-pavement riding
I love the idea of this segment being promoted. I wish there wasn't an emphasis on racing, but it seems the big bike mfgrs can't sell a bike unless it has that racing aesthetic built into it. The upcoming Raleigh Tamland looks like a great bike. I don't get the sense that they're pushing the racing aspect on it, or they're at least minimizing it. [RBW] Speaking of Off-Pavent Rides... Come to Redlands this Spring!
Over the years, the SoCal chapter of the Rivendell Bicycle Appreciation Society has put on a lot of great rides! I've loved EVERY one I've been on, and met a lot of greatpeople. They've actually lead to some pretty good friendships IRL, which is the best part of them. The other thing I love is seeing new areas of the state I've never been to. Amazing to explore back-country from San Diego to Ventura with the above-mentioned folks. I also love the idea of the organized rides/brevets/populairs that are happening like the D2R2 in Vermont, and La Ruta Loca in the Bay Area. So I think to myself: Why not combine the two? Which gives us this: http://redlands-strada-rossa.blogspot.com/ Some locals and I are trying to put on an organized ride, that shows the best of Inland Southern California in the Spring, and keeps people on as much dirt as possible. The rest is majority back/rural roads. Many of the SoCal rides have been on parts of this route, but this links the segments together in an amazing loop that comes out at just about 100km. A decent amount of climbing to keep folks honest, but there are no chest-bursters. Some singletrack as well. Not terrible technical, but 1km section of climbing that may cause some walking. Not a biggie. The vibe aimed for his an extended Riv-Ride. There are no timing devices, no podium spots, no t-shirts, just the knowledge that it'll be good people on a good route. And it's free! Not a money-maker, either for for profit or charity. Just a good ride! I am trying to arrange a post-ride meal and party hosted by the Redlands Bike BBQ http://www.bikebbq.com/ that will be a donations-only set up. They're good people and I'd like to help them out, but again, that's not the point of the ride. So long/short: The ride is on March 15th, 2014. Weather should be great. I hope many of you can make it here for this. Cheap/clean/safe hotels in town. Quaint historic downtown to walk around and lots of Victorian, Arts Crafts, MCM homes to look at for significant others that may not be into the whole 100km bike ride thing. Oh, and two independent breweries in town as well. Just thought I'd mention that! -- Cheers, David it isn't a contest. [RBW] Re: First Century!
That first 100 miles is always a kicker. Now comes the slippery slope of going further... Lovely ride report and great pictures. On Tuesday, October 8, 2013 10:57:42 AM UTC-7, Tony DeFilippo wrote: Not on my Atlantis but I'd argue that my 650B Trek is heavily Riv'd in setup. I took advantage of the Gov't shutdown last week to take off on a long ride. I didn't set out convinced I would attempt a full century, in fact my only goal was to exceed my previous long distance ride of around 50 miles. But at about the 25ish mile point I realized that the weather was great, the bike was handling good, my body felt right (at the time), and I really didn't have anything I needed to be home for that night. So I decided I'd push on to the end of the WOD Rail Trail, having picked it up at its beginning in Shirlington, VA. I ended up dealing with pretty persistant hamstring cramping from about mile 35 on but was able to ride through it. I stopped alot to rest and take in view's where they were and struck up a couple good conversations with fellow furloughed riders out enjoying the day. I even had a Riv-Spotting, running into Mary of the Chasing Mailboxeshttp://chasingmailboxes.com/blog on her sweet orange Moonbeam. One dissapointment for me was the Selle An Atomica saddle, I guess it's just not going to be the right saddle for me. I avoided any numbness issues but was feeling significant pressure in my 'sit bones' the whole ride. I initially thought that was a pretty good tradeoff given that I was able to complete the long day in the saddle. But the next day I discovered not just saddle sores but actual bruising corresponding to both sit bones and even a week later I'm still recovering from them. This definitely wouldn't work on a multi-day tour for me. I think I just need a wider saddle and I probably will probably try out a Brooks Flyer, I've got a B67 which I like but have found it to be less comfortable at 30+ miles. The other lesson learned related to bike handling, I discovered mulitple times in high speed descents that there is a point where the bike develops a wicked shimmy to the point of becoming a front and rear shimmy. Based on my weight (250lbs) and the relatively thin tubes I'm not really suprised, also the 650b conversion is probably contributing. I don't really feel like its a deal breaker, more a good discovery of one of the 'edges of the envelope' for this bike. The list of positives is far longer though; -Doubled my previous long ride -Used the drops for the first time and actually liked it -Noodle bars with cotton over inner tubes was fantastically comfortable, no issues with my hands throughout the ride (I did put on gloves at the turnaround) -Discovered the ability to ride through the pain of the cramps -Had somewhat random bursts of really strong riding even late into the day -Front basket with 'bungie net' was extremely versatile and the best 'gadget' of the ride -I ate every 10-20miles in small quantities and never really 'bonked' -Great views of the VA countryside especially past Herndon Pictures prove it happened... http://dr2dc.blogspot.com/2013/10/shutdown-solo-century.html Tony -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Howard - great to hear you were out on the WOD as well, I would have loved seeing you out on the RAM in particular! Thanks very much Erl and Eric. Doc - thanks for the advice, I'm going to have to look into Andiamo skins. I'm still not wild about having to use 'butt paste', but I guess I'll have to figure something out as I look at doing these longer rides. Also a good point about the 'contact area' toughening up, I'm sure it's just like anything else. Interesting to me that your looking at the SA for an adventure tourer, Im curious what you think between sprung and unsprung saddles in general and their applications...? I like the sprung B67 quite a bit but it's an unfair comparison as I've only done ~50 miles at once as opposed to the century on the SA. Manny - I'm totally headed that direction... at least thats my thought right now. I am pretty jazzed to have done the first one and want to get back out there as soon as I can pick another day. Re: [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls
those are the bolted on version, the brazed on Paul Racers are the best rim brake I've ever used for both modulation and stopping power. There is some tire size max, about 42 mm, to get the tire to fit past the pads. They are a bit clunky in the looks dept., especially the anodized version. I've got Neo-retro canti's on my new bike, and they stop very well but the modulation is not nearly as good as the brazed-on Racers. Silvers are not even close to the brazed on version. ~mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Quaint historic downtown to walk around and lots of Victorian, Arts Crafts, MCM homes to look at for significant others that may not be into the whole 100km bike ride thing. [RBW] Stolen Romulus In Sacramento?
Funny thing happened today: got a call from a good friend who was visited a LBS here in Sac when a tweaker came by and said he had a bike for sale; turned out to be a Riv Romulus, my friend offered him $50 for it, the gentleman said the pedals were worth more than that, my friend countered with Fifty dollars and you can have the pedals, and that was that. All we have to do now is find out who owns it! My friend called Riv to see if they could trace the owner, and they're still working on it, but I thought I'd see if anyone on the forum knows of someone who's missing a bike. If you do, send me a complete description of the build and the size, and we'll go from there. It's a really nice bike, and it would be cool to re-unite it with its owner. Wish us luck! [RBW] WTB Moustache Bars
Curious to try a pair; may just go with albastaches. ... have a set of drop bars to trade, if there's interest. Re: [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls
Have used both Racers and Tektro R559 brakes. Paul's: were hard to get centered for me. So many points of adjustment possible on them. Hard to get cables attached. I was new to center pulls though. Got easier each time I messed with them. They were great with salmon pads. R559's: install and set up wy easier for me. I like them much better. More user friendly for an un-mechanic like me. Both stop and feel just as good to my unrefined hands. I am not a brake connoisseur. So I don't know from modulation. Not sure which (Yokozuna or Koolstop salmon pads) come from the better slopes of the rubber plantations. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
