He says in the ad it's about half of the new price, which is a reasonable

Definitely not over-the-top. Big fan of the Brooks tape,eh? The price
always seemed over the top compared to cloth tape, but I have no doubt it
is way more comfortable. I'm building up a bike with the new 52cm Boscos,
cork grips, paul thumbies maybe leather tape is the way to go, we'll
see.

[RBW] A Grand Day Out (plus Map My Ride observation)

2013-10-20 Thread cyclotourist
It was a BEAUTIFUL Saturday morning... 66F when I began, 84F when I
finished four hours, 37 miles and 2,400ft of climbing later. I rode
about half of the upcoming Strada Rossa course (March 15th, be there!)
and had a great time out there. I was on 32mm Challenge Eroicas on my
50/34 X 11-28 geared Rivendell Road if that helps you picture the
demands of the route. Nothing crazy, although I ended up walking up
two bits of the hills. Just out of gears and out of slow-twitch muscle
in my legs at that point! It was a great ride, some photos here:
http://redlands-strada-rossa.blogspot.com/2013/10/see-it-to-believe-it-woodhouse-road-and.html

Also, as many of us use flicrk to store/share photos, I came across a
feature in Map My Ride that lets you add photos to the map. Other
mapping sites might do the same and this could be old news, but I just
found out about it and am stoked! Here's the map from yesterday and
the linked flickr

[RBW] Mt. Laguna S24O

2013-10-20 Thread Coconutbill
My first venture to San Diego county, was epic. after biking to the
metrolink, I caught the Amtrak in Burbank, met Hugh, we drove to Julian,
met Bruce and Curtis, we all rode out to the wilderness.

Due to a late start, and a setting sun, we found refuge above a meadow,
just below some trees, which served as an effective wind-cover. Not so long
after setting up camp, Curtis selflessly shared sips of his single 120z
beer (Anderson valley oatmeal stout) , and Hugh his delicious indian
lentils and brown rice.

A full moon illuminated the sky. the warmth of the day dropped quickly from
a toasty 50° to somewhere in high 30°'s. Slept intermittently, tracing the
moon left to right across my field of vision.

What a nice place to wake up, I thought. Surrounded by trees and with good
friends. After a small snack and coffee in camp, we rode into town, had a
seriously delicious breakfast, and embarked on the crowning jewel of the
trip, which was the singletrack leading us to the lake. (Not that many
pictures because it was sandy as heck!). Curtis broke from the group here,
taking another trail that led him towards his friend's Cabin, and the rest
of us (me and the Smithams), trucked onwards towards Julian.

When we left the Sunrise Hwy (S1) and headed off road toward Big Laguna
Lake I was totally thinking how much you would have enjoyed it. I recall
riding some of these same Jeep roads and single track back in the 90's and
it lived up to my recollections with small drop off's and smooth delicious
carved trail. I could easily spend a couple of days up there
riding/exploring and stealth camping.

I'm glad you liked Evan's pictures.

2013-10-20 Thread Hugh Smitham
Hi Mike,

You were missed. Your correct we did not drop down to Pine Valley as a
group. From Big Laguna Lake Curtis dropped down to PV to his friends cabin
the rest of us riding North on single track to Noble Canyon trail head @ S1
and back down to Julian, which I must say was another high light as we
glided down to Julian for a brew.. And you also are right that hwy 79 has
no shoulder which is disconcerting with traffic...I would still like to do
the loop when I feel stronger.

Glad to hear your feeling better. The next ride will most likely be a DT SD
bay loop...so another local one for you.

Depending on weather the next S240 will be Messanger Flats or the SC
valley. S240.

Best,

~Hugh

[RBW] Platrack Real World Feedback

2013-10-20 Thread Minh
OkDokee,

So i've been using a basket on my Nitto Mini Front for about a year,
overall happy with it, but with heavier loads it was a little wobbly (it
was secured with many zip-ties) it was never dangerous but i just wanted
something a little more secure to zip-tie to so picked up a platrack
second-hand.

Now that i have it on there, wow, those stays that extend down to the
dropout are really out there, i just have it in the bike-stand at the
moment, so maybe it's just a spatial/visual perception issue, but it looks
like a wide stance. My question is for those who use the platrack on a
regular basis, any issue with the stays extending so far out to the sides?
Any other issues i'm not aware of with this rack?

[RBW] Platrack Real World Feedback

2013-10-20 Thread WETH
I have used one for about two years; I think it's a visual/perception issue.
It looks like it extends out quite far, but when I look from the front or rear
of the bike it does not extend out as far as my large Saddlesack on the rear.
Also my albatross bars are wider still, so I encounter no practical issues with
its width. I think you will enjoy the added flexibility it provides in
securing items to the front of your bike.

I'm with Erl I think it's a visual/perception thing...I've only ridden
with mine for a couple of weeks, but just recently went off road with it on
single track and had no issues with it say getting caught up with branches
or impeding me in any way. I carried the Slickersack on it and it performed
excellent. I will be modifying the Slickersack with Marine grade button
snaps to more securely attatch the SS to the PR.

Pretty straight forward I'll work on getting a map together unless Curtis
beats me to it. He has a map of the area.

We made a few wrong turns, but nothing too hard to rectify. It was fun
getting lost...and we didn't lose much elevation in doing so. I know you'll
dig this area.

Well, the reason I call it cheap is only because seems like lotsa oold
Rivs I have seen online for sale have asking prices that are for more than
their original values from when they were production bikes. Those, I just don't
get..

I could understand if they have Son hubs and Phil stuff and Herse this and
Rich- built that...

Anyway, this Sam being only year old, the seller is being extremely fair for
his asking price.
It would have made my day when I was looking for my first used Rivbike... and

[RBW] Baggins Candy Bar and Bannana Bag

2013-10-20 Thread N.F
I've looked at this site before, but have never posted anything. I thought
it would be appropriate to ask you all about this.
I ride a blue frame Rambouillet that I've had for seven years. It's my
daily rider and I use it for everything - commuting, running errands and
long weekend rides. I love the bike and take good care of it. Recently I
bought these two bags on Craigslist because I'm looking to get some gear
out of my messenger bag and carry it on the frame. The bags work fine, but
I'm not overly thrilled with them. They're functional.
It occured to me that there might be some hard-core Rivendell riders who
would like these bags to complete a bike build the way they want it to
look. I know that some parts that are functional for one person are really
important to another person.
The bags are super clean. I just purchased replacement straps and bag
covers too. I could keep using them, but I appreciate when a part is right
for a bike and should be valued for that.
I'd sell them for my cost - about $110 total for the bags and parts - plus
the postange to mail them to the buyer. If there's no interest I'll use
them, but I have this nagging thought that someone would really want them
more than me.
Please let me know if there's any interest. I can send some pictures if
you like. Thanks - Nick

[RBW] Re: Appaloosa 58.7 Web Special but...

2013-10-20 Thread Don Compton
I live in Northern Ca. and get to visit Riv Headquarters once in awhile.
Last time I was able to ride an Appaloosa and I was amazed with the
handling of this bike. Its very eye-opening how much we give up thinking
that a racer-influenced design is so good. That influence really distorts
reality regarding bicycle ride and handling. That Appaloosa felt like I
could bomb down any hill with total confidence.

On Thursday, October 17, 2013 7:15:05 PM UTC-7, Christopher Murray wrote:

A very cool 58.7 cm Appaloosa on the Web Specials section. If only it fit
me- then I could spend the next few weeks dreaming of buying it! Is it me
or is the discounted price a little off? The invoice for the bike before
tax is $5,446.00. When you add tax it brings the bike to $5,891.08. The
after tax total is then discounted to $5,555.00 or almost $100 more than
the non-discounted price. Since I live out of state after I pay shipping
the bike would actually cost me more than if I had paid full price.
Obviously an honest mistake but if you lucky enough to be the right size
and nd have the $ make sure you bring it up when talking to them.

 Cheers!

My first foray into selling on this forum, but I've realized that the
Slickersack/Platrack combo is bigger than I really need, and also sits
pretty low on my big ol' 2TT AHH. So I need to sell it to fund the
purchase of a Sackville Bar Sack and accompanying Nitto BarSackRack.

 Up for sale is:

  - Sackville Slickersack
  - Nitto Platrack

They are lightly used, completely undamaged and all hardware is
 included. Pictures are here:

 https://plus.google.com/photos/102411392699939180397/albums/5895396665763489473?authkey=CJO6jaidtIyc_gE

These two products go together, neither is worth much for cycling
without the other. They have been discontinued by Riv, and don't come up
for sale often, so here is your chance to have a complete set in very good
condition. Price is $250, including shipping to CONUS. I'll ship wherever
you like at an additional charge, which will be whatever it costs me to
ship it. Paypal works, other arrangements can be made upon request.

You also need a front rack to mount these. The Nitto Mark's Rack is
what I used, and I believe the Nitto Mini-front is compatible as well.
Left to my own devices, I'd keep the Mark's Rack on my bike, but if you
want it, i'll throw it in for an additional $110 (new is $130). Be warned
that the struts have been cut down to size; I think I took an inch or so
off. You can get replacements from Riv.

I'll also entertain a straight-up trade of the Slickersack/Platrack for
the aforementioned Bar Sack/BarSackRack combo in similar condition.

Well, I liked Weinmann 610's better than the original (single pivot) brakes
on my XO-1 because they had much better clearance for fenders. 40 mm
Berthoud fenders worked well with those centerpull brakes while the
original brakes only could handle 30 mm fenders. The Weinmann/Dia Compe 610

[RBW] FS: New Schwalbe Mondial Tires 700x47

2013-10-20 Thread jar351
I'm on a mission to find the largest 700c tires that will fit (well) on my
Miyata touring bike. I tried these Schwalbe Mondials and found that they
just BARELY fit, too tight in fact for practical use. So unfortunately they
must go. Sold as 47mm, they measure closer to 42mm on my 23mm rims. In case
you're not familiar with the Mondial model--I don't think Riv sells
them--they replaced the legendary XR's as the ultimate expedition touring
tires. Considering how robust they are and how hard-wearing they are
reputed to be, they're not heavy at all and roll quite well. Everything
I've read about them leads me to believe they are excellent tires and well
worth the dough. This pair has been mounted and test ridden around the
neighborhood (on paved roads), so technically they're not *
brand-spanking-new*, but they're as good as new. These are the folding
Evolution Line version, the highest level that Schwalbe makes. I'm asking
$130 for the pair, shipped in the CONUS, or $120 with local pickup.

19, 20, 22, 23, 24, 25 (two issues), 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 36, 37,
38, 39. Along with Rivendell No.8 Spring 2001, and two 2006 catalogues:
 The first 2006 Aboutus states, We're a twelve-person, twelve-year old
bike company... is the Tweed issue. The second 2006 catalogue Aboutus,
We're an eleven-person, thirteen-year old bike company... is the Wool
Issue.
Feel free to tell me I am wrong.
I've been married a long time, so am used to being corrected.
Thanks for any feedback,
Tom
