Re: [RBW] Berthoud Fenders on Saluki/AHH

2014-09-11 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Excellent feedback guys! Thank you very much. Jeffrey the pictures are
particularly helpful and Steve as always your experience with this exact
frame is great to hear.

I haven't gotten up close with Honjo's but I was kind of blown away by
Berthouds on several of Rob Perks bikes earlier this year (as blown away as
one can be by fenders that is... ). The stiffness and solid installs really
stood out. $74 vice $150 doesn't hurt either.

In thinking I may try out the Berthouds and if I really am not comfortable
with the clearance for 42's I could go to 38's or swap them to another
frame.

Allan,

i've spent time down there and it is a pretty area, there are a few routes
that are not bike friendly (like US29), but you can find ways around it and
downtown is quite small so a bike is really handy.

depending on where work is, that 10 miles can be easy or stressful, the
roads are narrow and drivers are hit and miss in terms of how aware they
are on the tight roads.

as far as bikes, there are quite a few of us in the virginia area, so put
out a request if you can't get a bike here yourself. you might get lucky
and find a loaner for a few months.

it's the badge that is an inch off center, but one side of the saddle is
stiff, and the other is quite soft. We've concentrated on breaking in the
hard side and she rides it Many miles without complaint, but I still have
to apply neatsfoot oil to the bottom of the saddle just on that side to
keep it soft.

That's the kind of thing I am talking about.
I don't know if those things are considered defects, or just part of the
 hand-made acceptable imperfections.

I mean, as long as the saddle rides great, then no big deal, if that's par
for the course for hand made. But I don't want trouble down the road for
accepting something that may be defective.

It's unfortunate to have a nice bike like a Rivendell that you can't take
places and lock up. I would never entrust mine to a U-lock. I ride my
junky old Nishiki if want to ride somewhere but have a need to lock up.

Re: [RBW] Berthoud Fenders on Saluki/AHH

2014-09-11 Thread Anton Tutter
I have VO Zepps on two bikes with 42mm Hetres, and they really are just
about the ideal fender for that tire. Plenty of clearance, but they don't
look fat and oversized, either. No issues on either setup, both of which
have seen very rough, rocky and fast gravel riding. At half the price of
Honjos, they are a bargain.

An angle grinder will cut through any u-lock pretty quickly. You can see

[RBW] QB BB spec

2014-09-11 Thread 'Tex69' via RBW Owners Bunch
My LBS is having a problem dealing with a nasty creak in the BB area of my
(silver) QB. They don't seem to know what BB would be best, whether to use
ISO or JIS, or whether the crank (standard Sugino crank that shippped with
the QBS) is the issue. The most recent is that the BB installs fine and
that the crank arm might be rounded off and not setting.

Any QB BB wisdom would be appreciated. My QB is a low-mileage sunny-day
machine that has 2000 miles or less. IMHO, it should have a trashed/rounded
crank unless it was mis-installed in some capacity. I ride and rarely
wrench, at least on BBs and cranks.

When I was getting married, I considered a Tungsten ring, then the ring
designer told us that the only draw back of Tungsten is that it's very hard
to cut, so if you break your finger somehow, it would be extremely
difficult to get the ring off. I went with recycled gold instead.

How about using tungsten as the U-lock material?

[RBW] Re: QB BB spec

2014-09-11 Thread Jim M.
The QB is shipped with a JIS crank/bb, 103mm spindle. It's really unlikely
that RBW mis-installed the crank. How long has it been creaking? Did the
bike shop install a new bb not knowing what kind to use?

Faced with creaking, I would remove the crank and bb and re-install. Clean
the threads, grease them, and re-install the bb. Put grease/beeswax/lanolin
on the spindle, install the arms, and tighten the crank bolts to the proper
torque. Go for a ride and then tighten the crank bolts again.

Some will say to dry install the crank arms. Shelon and Jobst Brandt say
grease: http://sheldonbrown.com/brandt/installing-cranks.html

If your lbs didn't know what kind of bb, I'd guess they are accustomed to
external bb's/BB30, and perhaps there is a more retro friendly bike shop
you can find.

Re: [RBW] QB BB spec

2014-09-11 Thread Jim Bronson
I found most of my bottom bracket noises weren't bottom bracket noises at
all, they were crank arm to bottom bracket noises. I eliminated them by
making my standard practice to always torque to 35 ft/lbs using a click
type torque wrench. I haven't had any problems with noise from the bottom
bracket area since then.

If you're wondering where I got that spec from, Sugino's suggested torque
spec is 50 newton-meters for their square taper cranks which translates
roughly to 35ft/lbs.

What brand is the BB? Does the creak happen when both pedals are on the
down stroke? Have they ruled out a pedal? I'm sure they removed the BB and
regreased the threads before reinstalling. Is there play when the crank arm
is pulled side to side? A light coating of oil on the spindle before
installing the crank might help. Those creaks can be annoying! Good luck
with that!

2014-09-11 Thread Shoji Takahashi
You might want to add a cable lock. That's two locks instead of one without
adding much weight or nuisance to lock up. (The cable laced through the
wheels and locked with the U still means only one lock.)

I've left heavier-duty U locks at the train station so that I'd have two U
locks. One that I carry; one that's at the train station.

Another thing to consider is parking/locking at different places. If a nice
bike regularly appears at a certain space, it could become an easy target.
(Thieves would bring the proper lock cutting equipment at the scheduled
time.)

Faced with creaking, I would remove the crank and bb and re-install.
Clean the threads, grease them, and re-install the bb. Put

As to creaking, it's mostly out of the saddle with gusto, so no weight on

Some further research says that they mounted an ISO BB a while ago instead

My wife and I got tungsten wedding bands so I researched the issue. While
tungsten is very hard to cut, it's very easy to shatter! If you go to the
ER with a stuck tungsten ring, they stick it (and your finger) in a clamp
and take a hammer to it. Maybe it's possible to make a tungsten lock
where the shape doesn't really facilitate shattering (like a thin ring) but
I do know it would be HEAVY. I joke that in a pinch, I could use my
wedding band as a self-defense projectile.

When I was getting married, I considered a Tungsten ring, then the ring

difficult to get the ring off. I went with recycled gold instead.

How about using tungsten as the U-lock material?

 Simple answer: No.

An angle grinder will cut through any u-lock pretty quickly. You can see
videos on youtube of how fast it is. I've seen a titanium lock -- Tigr IIRC

sounds like the recovered Sam had it's lock picked or else not latched

[RBW] WTB: Nitto Dirt Drop Stem 100mm (for my new Albastache cockpit)

Good day, folks. Recently, another list member was kind enough to sell me
his Albastache bars and brake levers, which is a good thing since I'm
building a bike on strict budget--just a lowly teacher here. However,
despite my many meticulous measurements it turns out that Technomic stem
I'd planned on using just doesn't get the bars up high enough--small
frame--and the 80mm Dirt Drop just compresses me too much. So, before I
plunk down another $70 or $75 on a stem, which I'd really rather not do,
has anyone got a spare 100mm Dirt Drop lying around? Bonus points if you're

[RBW] Re: QB BB spec

2014-09-11 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
That's pretty weird all the way around.

When I ran non-ferrous frames, one of which had a consistent BB creak
issue, we found that using Anti-Seize worked best. Alternatively, plumbers
teflon tape can work. I used steel bolts which also helped.

I just replaced the BB on my QB with an IRD. The old one had been in there
long enough that the removal was especially difficult. The new BB had
trouble threading in so I had the LBS-with-the-oldest-mechanics retap the
threads.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclofiend/14635633463/

That actually helped quite a bit.

As others have noted, sometimes a BB creak is any number of other things.
I was getting a little noise out of the Suzue rear hub towards the time I
retired it. And most of friends with noisey bottom brackets had
ungreased pedals or seat posts.

RE: JIS and ISO... AASHTA - http://sheldonbrown.com/bbtaper.html

One thing you should do is mount the cranks, torque them down (without
lubing the spindle) and take off the bolts. Take a look at the amount of
room between the spindle and the face of the crankarm. If the spindle was
all the way out to the end of the opening in the cranks, then, yes, they
did damage. Otherwise, not so much.

Unless the cranks are coming loose when you ride or clearly off center when
you spin them, I'd tend to think you didn't damage them.

Best of luck - creaks can be really crazy-making. I usually take that
opportunity to pull everything off (stem/bars/pedals/saddle/seatpost) and
regrease everything.

[RBW] Re: final test: help size up a hunq

2014-09-11 Thread Takashi
Hi Bill,

As I've mentioned, I have 54cm Hunq, my PBH is 85cm, and I am 175cm tall.
Saddle height (center of BB to top of saddle) is 75cm.

Picture of my Hunq with Noodle and Dirt Drop 8cm stem:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/8096995569/
The stem has an effect horizontal extension of 6 or 7 centimeters, and I
feel comfortable with them.
At first I had Dirt Drop 10cm stem; it made me feel a bit too stretched.

I like handlebar to be high, which makes stem stick out pretty high, which
in my opinion is not very cool-looking.
I could have gone for 58cm frame, but then handlebar would have been too
far away.
Maybe you can find a stem with even shorter extension (5cm), but currently
there is no such stem in Riv website.

Bosco-bar with 13cm-extension stem:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/14771364047/
I like to ride bolt upright when on Bosco- or Alba- equipped bike, so again
stem is sticking out high.

Bullmoose:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/8690416089/
You can set this bar pretty high without showing much stem.

I ride mostly on paved roads, sometimes unpaved roads.
There are not many rideable trails around here (in Japan, trail usually
means something like this
https://www.flickr.com/photos/77318553@N08/8740525489/in/photostream/, or
something even worse), so I don't have have many chances to ride on trails.

Anyway, you can ride wherever you like on your Hunq with whichever
handlebar you have.
When I found rideable trail on my way, both Bullmoose and Albatross bars
worked fine.

Good luck!
Takashi

Ok, your comments on this site and Jared at Riv have just about talked me
into dropping my money on a Hunquapillar rather than trying to resurrect
the 650B Bombadil (may it ever RIP).
But before I take the plunge, I'm wanting to think this sizing thing out
 more carefully.
*Any of you with a 51 or 54 cm Hunq,* would you care to reveal your PBH,
your height, your handlebar style and your comfort/satisfaction with the
Hunq for the uses you are putting it to (would you specify briefly what
 those uses are?)

(I used to claim my PBH was 83.5,which is about the mid-tube height of a
54 hunq with largest tires -- but using a hard metal ruler today, and
trying again and again, I'm getting a pbh reading that looks more like
84-85. I am very comfortably fitted on a 58 cm Saluki with a thumb more
than a fistful of seat tube showing. But this Hunq will be a hoppin' on and
off rough jeep trail bike as well as a heavy load paved and gravel touring
 bike.)

How springy are they?
The Rivet site describes them as suspension saddles.

But I like sprung saddles.
Though I do love the looks and the idea of that massive cut out, especially

2. I really would like to try a sprung Cambium, but looks like nothing on

I would really like to try one, as I wouldn't have to worry about the

saddle and designed around its shortcomings. IMO a definite improvement.
They actually don't feel springy at all at your sit bones (they feel more

[RBW] Re: 9 to 8 speed worth it for better friction shifting?

2014-09-11 Thread lungimsam
*UPDATE and report:*
I swapped out the cassette for the 11-32 RBW sells, and threw on an SRAM 8
speed chain. It was really easy and fun to do. Didn't need to adjust limit
screws. Just threw it on and runs fine like the old system.

*How it effects drivetrain:*
Chain runs fine thru my Deore derailers. I notice less drivetrain vibration
now than with the old setup. Not that the old setup was any problem. It was
fine to begin with.
Chain/FD rub seems to happen a little earlier in biggest and littlest cogs
while in middle ring up front. But everything in between is fine. Its not
an issue while riding. Just as easy derailering as it was with the old
setup.

*Ratios:*
The ratios are very close, but not exact to what was on the bike stock.
Now have Shimano 8-speed 11-32t (11-13-15-18-21-24-28-32), stock was: SRAM
9-speed 11-34t (11-13-15-17-20-23-26-30-34)
I find I get up hills just fine in my area just as easily with the 32 as I
did with the 34 cog. There is a cruising sweet spot between the 23 and 26
cog I am not getting. But I am hoping my legs will get stronger and move it
to the 26 cog.

I still get auto-shifting sometimes, but I think it is happening less often
with the 8-speed. Hard to tell for sure.

So, if anything, I am not any worse off than before. I like the fact that I
have one less cog on the bike. Don't ask me why, as there is no real reason
to feel that way.
I think it does auto shift less. But no hard count evidence for that.

Anyway, thank you all for all the advice and guidance on doing this. Thanks
to Mark too and Vince at RBW for their helpful info.
