Yep, I had no problems with 9 spd 11-32, a long cage Riv Microshift RD, and Silver bar-end shifters on my Riv Road with a triple crank. It is a fun filled weekend. Where else can you meet, Bruce Gordon, Steve Potts, Richard Sachs, Chris King, Joe Bell and a slew of others all in one weekend? In the case of safety or el-cheapo glasses, sizing might not be available but on better frames, there are a few measurements for sizing. Here's one link that goes over it well enough for most people's purposes: http://simplyeyeglasses.com/help/frame_size.php Some contractor glasses might be good. I'm guessing the Dewalts are. Although I have no experience to the contrary, I'd assume a good pair of cycling glasses would be more up to the task. I have had my Ruby Projects transitions for a few years now and they're light, comfortable and have held up well. I paid more for them than I should have (and have had subsequent poor customer service experience), so it's hard to give them a ringing endorsement, but I think your request for cycling specific shades is prudent. [RBW] Re: OT: best Mac for sophisticated Word Processing, for the $?
Much good advice; thanks. I don't reject laptops; in fact all else equal, a laptop would be nice for the occasional time when portability would be convenient. But I really want enough to keep 6 Word documents, 4 with somewhat sophisticated formatting, and 4 PDF documents, open and usable at the same time as 3 separate Google windows. I'd like a 2 screen arrangement, too, which I assume one can rig with a laptop. I do need a largish screen, though because of my layout work. A daresay a 15 would be fine, but 2 separate 17-19 screens would be better. That said, the other goal is to spend no more than I have to -- refurbished is fine -- while getting a more or less turnkey package; I'm no computer tweaker. Why Mac? I like the interface and fear what I had thought was the greater liability of PCs to attacks; but I've not used a PC since 2008 and that was an old one. Have things changed? I'd use Ubuntu and Open Office were it not for my work. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: ISO Bay Area frame builder
That is *exactly* what I'm thinking for the shifter. True, it's a movement of hand away from handlebar to rotate gear selector, but it could be reachable with either hand, and gosh, it wasn't so long ago that riders reached down below the fork crown to shift gears. Magic gear? Oh, you mean perfect axle placement to get perfectly-tensioned chain without horizontal dropouts or a cogged/roller tensioner? Attractive, but when the chain stretches... Plus, it all needs to work with fenders and support fast wheel removal for fixing flats. - Andrew, Berkeley On Thursday, December 11, 2014 10:35:40 AM UTC-8, Philip Williamson wrote: If it's custom, you could try for a magic gear. [RBW] The Incidental Economist Tackles Bike Safety
Link http://theincidentaleconomist.com/wordpress/argh-bike-safety-edition-also-i-dont-get-how-we-make-policy-sometimes/ One of my favorite blogs for health economics turned to bike safety today: This was a controlled trial of putting permanent (daytime) running lights on bicycles. It was cluster randomized. And, over the course of a year, the incidence of accidents for those with the running lights was 19% lower. The incidence of multiparty accidents with injury to the participating cyclist was 47% lower. My bike collection has been in flux, and I have nothing fully assembled right now with a dynohub (that's changing soon, anyways). But that seems like pretty good evidence for leaving your lights on during daytime riding (which is something I'm less likely to do with battery lights). -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Friction shifting and pulleys again
I’m looking at getting a Hilsen soon (probably 58cm 650b) and I want to go friction only shifting with Silver Shifter bar ends (probably on Albas). I decided on Riv’s Sugino 46-36-24 triple up front. From everything I have read, 8 speed is the way to go for friction, and 8 is enough for me. I’m not a racer so I don’t need to precisely match the cadence of the peloton. More important for me is to have a wide range of gears. So for the rear, I’m looking at the Shimano Acera HG41 8 Speed MTB Cassette, 11-13-15-17-20-23-26-34T. I like the 11T for fun downhill runs (I admit that I don’t really NEED it). The 34T is so I can get my old body up over the hill. I would only use it with the 24 up front for when I climb a really nasty hill. The 8 tooth jump between 26 and 34 probably makes the 34 less than desirable for normal use, but that’s fine as I’ll reserve the 34T for use only with the 24T front chainring as an “emergency wimp-out granny gear”. For the front derailer I’m looking at the Riv recommended Shimano Deore XT front derailer (FD-M781X6) – 17160 (Shimano's part number FD-M781X6 or M781AX6L or M781AX6S). For the rear, I’m planning on the Riv recommended Shimano Deore rear derailer – 17138, (RD M591 SGS). 1st Question: Are these the best derailer picks for my application, or should I look at something else? 2nd Question: I read that swapping the rear derailer pulleys is a good thing for friction shifting because the wobble designed into the top pulley (to make index shifting work) has a negative impact on friction shifting. But then…I would be putting a wobbly pulley in the lower position (when a non-wobbly pulley is called for). Should I just spring for another set of pulleys (about $10) so I could put “lower pulleys” in both positions? Would this avoid potential problems, or would I just be wasting money? [RBW] Re: Friction shifting and pulleys again
I think your component choices all sound lovely. Go ahead and think about trying an Altus rear derailer. I haven't done that yet, but I have absolutely gotten to the opinion that when you are friction shifting, expensive derailers are really overrated. Cheap works great! Flopping the pulleys I would call unnecessary with 8sp. Go ahead and try it and see if you can tell the difference. I'd venture the guess that you can't and you'll say whatever and just keep riding happy. You definitely don't need to go buying another pulley. Agree with Bill on all points. Rivendell' recommended components work'n'play well together. To your concern about using the 34 cog only with the 24 ring, you may be favorably impressed with how well the 8 tooth jump from the 26 to 34 works. A 36 middle ring with a 34 cog will get you up a lot of hills. I wouldn't hesitate to make that shift. dougP On Thursday, December 11, 2014 1:49:22 PM UTC-8, Doug Williams wrote: I’m looking at getting a Hilsen soon (probably 58cm 650b) and I want to go friction only shifting with Silver Shifter bar ends (probably on Albas). [RBW] Re: Friction shifting and pulleys again
For me, swapping the pulleys made a world of difference. I'm on the 9-speed though. I'd have to look up the numbers, but the range I have is the same as your's in the rear and in the front is Riv's standard triple set up. I love the 34 in the rear, as I can stay in the middle front ring for 90% of my riding, which includes a lot of single track and bikepacking single track. Bike packing is when I drop to the granny gear, but I find that with the 34t rear is too slow, and I may as well get out and push at that point since at those speeds I don't have any momentum to get over obstacles. I've had good luck with Sunclouds. They're a sub-brand of Smith, the lens quality is really good, and they tend to be pretty light and comfortable in my opinion. [RBW] Re: Friction shifting and pulleys again
The derailer company designed the derailer to work properly with indexed shifting systems. That's what more than 90% of their customers use...so no mystery there. Wobbly upper pulleys work best with indexed shifters. It is only the small, deeply disturbed minority using friction shifters who desire an upper pulley that doesn't wobble. I prefer a manual transmission car also. But I recognize that I'm in the minority there as well. If you want to be a retrogrouch, you have to accept that your path will be a lonely one. But it can be a happy and rewarding path. [RBW] Phase Two of an Atlantis build
I got the brakes set up on my new/old Atlantis. I've gone with Tektro CR720s for now. I did a fun modification on one of the new old stock Suntour GPX brakelevers. I slotted the bottom side of the metal body of the brakelever so the barcon shift housing routes through the brakelever and under the bar tape all the way to the tops. I ran it under the tape to stay out of the way of my front basket. I ran it through the brakelever instead of alongside it just to try to clean up the routing a bit. The two tone Newbaums tape job was a combo I've been thinking about for a while. [RBW] Issue with Phil cassette hub
Evening, group. Anyone here (1) run a Phil cassette hub on their Riv, and (2) come to find the cassette does not release or install onto the hub body without significant force/wrangling/finagling involved? It's really bizarre. I have a Phil cassette hub on my Hilsen and I have this issue. Called Phil today. So, Phil wants $266 from me (plus shipping both ways) to install the current gen cassette hub and ratchet ring. No warranty on Phil parts, apparently. Riv installed the cassette hub on my Hilsen in 2010, and I'd very much assume the guys who built my Hilsen up would've noticed a fussy fit between the cassette and the hub body. But how did this happen? Does this scenario speak to anyone here? If so, do you know of another workaround, as an alternative to dealing with Phil. [RBW] Baltimore, MD to Scranton,PA ride planning...
You Rivfolks do some long distance rando riding, touring, campling, etc... What's the best way to plan a long ride like this from Baltimore, MD to Scranton, PA? Any east coasters know some bike friendly routes? I've only done a few centuriesin the last year and a half, so don't know if I would be able to handle a double century going to Scranton, as its 200 miles. Maybe layover at a motel one night and travel the rest the next day. Don't know how tough back to back centuries are for a commuter and recreational century and half century rider like me when I am in shape in the spring and summer and fall. Bike friendly routes would be the most important thing, I think. I know there is a MUP that runs from Baltimore to York, PA, so maybe that is a start. Don't know if I'd even dare to do this, but it would be fun and memorable. So I'm looking into it to see if it even seems realistic for me. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Friction shifting and pulleys again
deeply disturbed..ha! That's funny. 1. *I use Silver bar ends on my Blue 2013 Sam* with the stock RBW build of the time Deore front derailer and Deore rear derailer, both, with a non-stock 8-speed Hyperglide cassette, that I got from the RBW site and everything works great. I do get some auto shifting on the cassette, and the chain sometimes jams when shifting into the big ring on the stock Sugino XD triple crank. But that all may be operator error. It all works just fine, though. Nothing to complain about. 2.* I also use Silver bar ends with my Bleriot* and a Microshift triple 9-speed front derailer, SunXCD rear derailer, an SRAM 8-speed cassette and chain and a Sugino triple crankset, and that setup seems to work better so far. But its a different bike and drivetrain. The SUNxcd derailer is like 230 grams or something, so probably much lighter than an Altus (314 or something? I think) but significantly more expensive. I like all silver colored derailers so I got those. I also don't like putting any heavier components on a bike than I have or need to. Hard enough for me to haul up hills without making it any more difficult. So why do it if the price is doable? Anyway, I like those derailers. You may, too. You can peruse the Microsoft triples down the page here: http://www.microshift.com.tw/road_non.html SUN Xcd rear derailer here: http://sunxcd.net/rearder/ If I ever upgrade the derailers on the Sam, I will probably get the SUNxcd rear and Microshift 8 speed, unless I find anything that I'd like to try better. I think RBW has a front derailer that's all silver too by IRD here: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/d11.htm -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
