[RBW] Nice bosque ride, 65*F, no pics

2015-02-05 Thread Patrick Moore
A nice thing about working for yourself is that on a very nice winter day
you can tae 2 hours off and go for a 19 mile dirt ride in the nearby
bosque. I could have explored for several more hours, but work called,
alas. The village of Corrales, some 5 miles due north of me along the same
wooded area bracketing the Rio Grande that skirts my own neighborhood has
miles of unpaved side roads and acequia trails that, while flat and
generally straight, make up for the lack of topographical excitement by
their simple, wooded beauty -- a beauty that stands out all the more in
this high desert landscape.

Nothing at all epic, but great fun and mentally refreshing nonetheless.

2015-02-05 Thread Wildcat96
Very nice Dan! I just posted a pic of my 52cm Bombadil. I'm quickly
becoming a fan of the clear powdercoat and kind of wish mine was done this
way. Interesting to see how many variations of the Bombadil decals there
are out there.

Eric, did you find this bike locally? It looks very similar to a Singer on

Re: [RBW] New to me Bombadil

2015-02-05 Thread Patrick Moore
Congratulations on the new bike.

I'm partial to the Rivendell greens, particularly the sage green that
they used on one of my customs. That goes supremely well with cream
accents. That said, the Rambouillet blue and the darker blue on my '99 Joe
Starck are also very pretty.

Still, the true beauty of a Rivendell is in the build, finish, and design
-- and ride! And I've not seen an ugly color on any Rivendell I've seen --
compared to the rather ugly green on my Fargo and other less than pretty
colors I've had on other bikes.

decide if I should keep it the same color or not. I think a traditional

[RBW] Re: Coldest successful s24o yet..!

2015-02-05 Thread Mark Reimer
Whew, ok. Sorry for the delay, I'm in the middle of moving so there is lots
to do!
Back to the story, and answering questions.

I recently purchased a North Face synthetic bag off a friend. The bag is
rated to -30C and I've been itching to try it out. Over the last two weeks,
the temperature has been sitting between -10 and -20C, so I figured an
overnighter was in order and it would probably be pretty comfortable in a
-30 bag. I recruited two friends, Graham and Ian, to tag along. Graham is
the gent on the cover of the most recent Bunyan Velo, which is from a story
I contributed. Ian is an experienced winter camper and has been a great
source of knowledge for me.

The plan was to ride as many trails and river paths as possible. The mighty
Red River is now frozen solid, and a 10km section has been plowed into a
skating and cycling path. We met at a cafe at 8:30, by which point the
temperature had already dropped to -20. Hmm, maybe this wouldn't be a mild
night after all.

Ian led the way, taking us down a bunch of trails I had never ridden
before. We creeped through various suburbs as we hugged the banks of the
river. Eventually we reached the Seine river, which is more of a creek
really, and that's where it got really slippery.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Fk77eHRefMU/VNOVGqtTCfI/Jmw/M55H4r640qQ/s1600/Feb%2Bs24o%2B2015%2B%28220%2Bof%2B70%29.jpg
I said earlier that it has been mild lately. So the paths were full of foot
prints which had then frozen. It was like riding on butter on glass, with
ball bearings thrown in there too. Graham came around a corner and went
down immediately. I tried to ride around, which only caused me to hit the
deck as well. Falling on lumpy ice sucks. I smashed my left knee and tore
off a pannier, but in the end all was ok.

Or destination was a section of the river bank near the University of
Manitoba, where Ian works. That way he could get to work on time without
much difficulty. Graham didn't work till the afternoon, and I had the day
off, so it was perfect.

We found a clearing in some pine trees and Ian had stashed a bit of wood
there the night before. When we arrived, we had ridden about 35km over
three hours. Slow going, but it was mostly icy single track, so...

We quickly got to work on making a fire. The temperature had now sunk to
-30, and our camp site was not protected from the wind. Nothing is really
protected from the wind in this area for that matter, it's just too flat
and the river acts as a wind funnel. With windchill it was considerably
colder.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ajK6QBCln50/VNOWBaJ_g8I/Jm4/8_SFTCtg-pQ/s1600/Feb%2Bs24o%2B2015%2B%28232%2Bof%2B70%29.jpg
Still, we were in high spirits! It is absolutely critical in weather like
this to stay dry. Once you sweat and become damp, you can't do anything
until you dry off. I've found that soft pedalling the last 5km or so is the
solution. We were taking it easy anyway, but slowing down a bit allows the
wind to dry out your clothes (always wear soft shells with some
breathability) without cooling off too much. Once we got to camp, I threw
on a down jacket from my bag and put some chemical warmers in my mitts.
Feeling good.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-k1iK0rwQttY/VNOWfLuMe0I/JnA/-tJmcBiezV8/s1600/Feb%2Bs24o%2B2015%2B%28237%2Bof%2B70%29.jpg
My beers had frozen solid in the bottle cages (a real rookie mistake) so I
had to leave them by the fire to thaw out. You can see the frozen beer ice
forced the cap off a bit and oozed out.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-1fkRgR4ATQc/VNOWsQYFIHI/JnI/bbrorqkJ8Sk/s1600/Feb%2Bs24o%2B2015%2B%28240%2Bof%2B70%29.jpg

I setup my tent, a North Face Mountain 25 4-season tent, which was pretty
awkward in the foot-deep snow. Usually I can have it up in about 3 minutes.
This time it took me closer to 15. I had to do it with mitts on, as even 30
seconds without gloves would cause frost bite.

Once camp was set, we sat around our fire, ate chips, drank beer and
scotch, and felt pretty warm and merry for until 2am. Reluctantly we all
made our way to our sleeping bags. Graham and I were sharing the tent, and
Ian was in a bivvy sack.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-h3GMB9nx_uI/VNOXTU4i3xI/JnQ/N-zzfOPdLLk/s1600/Feb%2Bs24o%2B2015%2B%28241%2Bof%2B70%29.jpg
The final temperature reading was -33C, with a windchill of -38C. I changed
into dry wool socks, put on some toe warmers, put my boots into a plastic
bag and shoved them into the bottom of my sleeping bag (to keep them
somewhat warm over the night. It sucks getting into frozen boots, you'll
never warm them up the next day) and went to bed. For the first 10 minutes
I was quite warm and cozy! Then I started to cool right off...

What kind of maladjusted social misfits are we to be out here tonight?
said Graham. I was starting to agree.

If you use wider rims, tires may rub your frame/fork.
I have read somewhere that newer Hunqapillar has more tire clearance
 than
old ones. I don't remember where I read it.

  Hello Riv folk Hunq tribe.

Ant in Portland, here. Happy to say I'm the most excited owner of the
custom paint jobb'd 62cm 2012 Waterford Hunq (AKA The Silver Fox) that
 the
lovely Keith B posted FS a few months back. (The sideways picture in
 that
post did that paint job so little justice!!!) The bike went through a
standard baptism: brutal fenderless solo sunrise mud quest through
 Forest
Park, rack install and a near immediate swapping and switching of bars,
 stem
   tires.

The 50mm Schwalbe Duremes that came on the Hunq are wonderful tires
 they
are most appreciated additions via their new path in life on the
 Atlantis.
So no surprise here, right? I wanna go bigger on the Hunqapillar. I
 threw
on the biggest I had laying around, some 29 x 2.1 Kenda Small Block
 8's. My
caliper says 54mm at the widest knob diameter. (I was able to safely
squeeze these onto my Atlantis, for the record.) There's some room to
 go
bigger, of course and here's where you all can steer me in the right
direction... Gobs of clearance when it comes to the fork and
 chainstays,
but looking at the seat stays it seems like a 60mm/2.35 would be
 pushing
  it.

I'm on the verge of buying the first set of For-The-Hunq tires and I'd
very much appreciate the Good Word of thee Group. I'm looking at some
Panaracer 2.2's but would love to max this baby out! Can i go bigger?
What's the word? Do you Bombadil riders get more clearance or no?

From the design perspective: Probably ain't so easy to make much more
clearance in the seat stay zone without doing something funky (ie bowed
Atlantis chainstays), but my function/design question is this: why mega
 wide
clearances at the fork chainstays if the seat stay clearance is the
ceiling at a mere (sarcasm) 59.5ishmm?

Also- if anyone recalls the initial FS posting and thread for this
 bike,
(--- HERE ) there was a mention by the now-previous owner of
 larger
  tire clearance edition
which roused some questions in the group to little avail. Were early
batches of Hunq's maxing out at a more narrow tire? It's no big deal
 but I
admit I am a little confused by this claim. Any and all info greatly
appreciated. OK. Enough. I'm gonna go ride now, I swear.

[RBW] Re: Coldest successful s24o yet..!

2015-02-05 Thread John Phillips
Mark,

Next time try a sheet of bubble foil insulation cut to fit under a
winter-rated insulation pad.

And closed cell foam pads are safer than inflatables like Thermarest pads,
especially when a leak in the pad could be a disaster.

Or in an emergency, sleep on top of your panniers.

If wind is always likely, stick with the tent rather than a bivy.

And I apologize if I sound like your mom. :)

John

[RBW] Re: Coldest successful s24o yet..!

2015-02-05 Thread Deacon Patrick
Great report, Mark! You'll be amazed how much difference proper ground
insulation makes. The rule of thumb is a layer underneath = two on top. I
use two full length foam Thermarest pads for those conditions (last year,
not this year). Depending on the temps, the only way to keep the beer from
freezing is to tuck them in pockets inside your jacket (same with water).
Yes, everything takes roughly 10x longer in the cold. More, if you are
setting up wind breaks around your tent. Brilliant call to go slow and
allow your body's moisture to evaporate off. Moisture management is key to
survival! If you end up doing this often, I find that heavy wool with
ventile shell allows great flexibility and spectacular breathability in any
conditions for during aerobic activity (take off the shell at the first
sign of sweating, put it on at the first sign of chill). Down, as you
describe, is the weapon of choice against cold for when you are still. I am
delighted to hear you learned the few lessons without paying high price.
The price in extreme cold can get very high very fast -- and you were
within minutes of help if needed.

I find there is nothing quite like the feeling of crisp everywhere. The
snow is crisp. The air crackles as you move through it. Breath is crisp.
Great adventure in your own backyard! Fantastic!

With abandon,
Patrick
