[RBW] Re: FS Two 1985 Bridgestone MB-3's
With its current tires the stand over is just a hair over 79cm or about 31 1/4 inches. Update: one of the bikes is sold. Looking for a box and trying to ship today or tomorrow. Thanks, Bruce On Saturday, February 14, 2015 at 8:10:41 PM UTC-8, Bruce Smitham wrote: I picked up both of these 1985 Bridgestone MB-3's from craigslist for $100 which were in a storage unit (sounds like one of those TV series). My thought was to fix one up for my niece visiting this summer from the Netherlands and sell the other to my brother. I have too much work and no time for such projects so I'm selling both. If there is no interest then I will post on Craigslist. Just wanted to give Riv and iBOB members first opportunity. The frames measure 54cm seat tube 55 1/2cm top tubes. Both frames are steel lugged and made in Japan with 4130 tubing and are in excellent condition- no rust but a few scratches here and there. All original paint and components. No high end components though- older Sugino double cranksets with bash guards, Suntour FR derailleurs, Suntour thumbies, Araya wheels. I didn't start to clean them so they are as they were from storage. Selling for what I paid $50 each plus shipping and any paypal fees. Local pick up preferred. [RBW] Re: Need to test ride a 54cm vs 58cm Hunq.
Mike, Another point to consider is the tire you intend to use. I have 35 mm tires, smaller than Riv recommends, so that lowers the top tube. If you want to max out the tires, for aggressive off road, that would impact the standover. But the 54 still seems small for you. Jim D. Pretty sure I'd be perfect for a 56 Hunq, but since that little dream boat doesn't exist and I can't spring for a custom, I need to figure out which one of the available models fits me best. That being said, is there anyone on the list in Austin, TX who would be able to let me test-ride your 54 or 58 Hunq? Re: [RBW] Re: Velo News on Bike Weight
Kyle: I read your blog regularly; please start publishing twice a day. Regarding bike weight: my own experience with a motley array of different bikes of different builds and qualities has been that weight is relatively unimportant when it comes to feeling (note that word) spritely or lively -- a notion that involves ease of pedaling and cadence in a given gear, so it's not purely mental smoke. I had an old Herse that was a tank as to weight (guesstimate 28 lb) but that from the first pedal stroke felt fast. My erstwhile Sam Hillborne, no heavier, felt much slower; and even the very light framed, *tout 531* '73 Motobecane didn't feel as spritely; very same tires, IRC Tandems, 30 mm. My current Ram, also not light at ~26 lb, feels fast, though this one has Parigi Roubaix tires on it. I wish I had an explanation for this phenomenon. I hesitantly guess that fit and geometry affect this perception. One exception to the weight no matter rule: my Riv fixie gofast, at 17 1/2 lb and with 370 gram rims and 200 gram tires seems easier (measured by gearing -- slightly higher than other cruising gears at 75 -- and cadence) to push up hills; in fact, every time I decide I don't need a gofast and what I'll do is convert it to rack, lighting, 35+ mm tires, I ride up some hills and decide, Damn! This is too good to relinquish! On Mon, Feb 16, 2015 at 7:33 AM, Kyle Brooks bicycle1...@gmail.com wrote: I read that article on VeloNews -- really just an excerpt from the book, Faster which is one I think I'd like to read. In any case, I wrote something about this idea on The Retrogrouch Blog last year. Not scientific, but just a comparison between two of my own bikes and my commute to work. The two bikes are pretty similar, but one is loaded up with bags, racks, fenders, lights, etc. all of which probably adds 15 lbs or so. I normally use the loaded one for my work commute, and it normally takes me about 50 minutes to ride the 13 miles to work. I achieved my best time, however, on the lighter bike -- 45 minutes for the same commute. However, that day, I had also managed to hit nothing but green lights the whole way to work. When I managed the same feat, all green lights, with the loaded bike, I came awfully close - 46 minutes. Again - it's more anecdotal than scientific, but in the end, I concluded that there are probably a lot of other things that make more difference than weight, and that being the case, it hardly makes sense to obsess about grams. If fenders, or racks/bags can improve our comfort and convenience, then they're worth whatever weight they add. It seems to me that a lighter bike feels faster, but the difference is more perception than reality. if interested, here's the link to the full article: http://bikeretrogrouch.blogspot.com/2014/05/a-tale-of-two-bikes.html Kyle Brooks Akron, OH On Sunday, February 15, 2015 at 8:41:33 AM UTC-5, Fullylugged wrote: GPP has said as much on the Blug before, but it's nice to see it in the Zeitgiest as well. Re: [RBW] Riv handlebars and back pain-your experience?
I've heard this experience from others, and there is a reason why the standard drop bar position, with 45* back angle, has been so popular so long; and why saddle/bar equilibrium (relative to the individual rider of course) is the crucial part of bike fit. Me, at about 57 or 8, a couple of years ago, with my neck getting stiffer, I raised my (drop) bars about an inch to about 1 below saddle nose, and switched to longer-ramp models (Maes Parallels; 42 cm Noodle; 44 cm B 135; the Maes Parallels are the best of the bunch) from the agressively short ramped185. Much better! Though as a frisky 40-something a bar 3 below saddle was fine. Another instance: long ago I complained to Grant that I felt I was losing power TDC of the pedal stroke. I had my saddles way forward with long stems in a stupid pursuit of KOPS. Grant said, Get the saddle back and the bar up and back and I did both, moving the bar from a long extension and 6 below saddle to 8 cm and 3 below saddle. *Much* better for my back as well as my power and my arms/shoulders! Butt-back works for me. On Sun, Feb 15, 2015 at 12:56 PM, alan lavine cigar...@gmail.com wrote: Hello All...Thought I would share this, as I'm sure I'm not the only mature cyclist with intermittent low back pain. I have a small disc herniation at L4-L5 level that protrudes posteriorly and compresses the nerve root as it exits the vertebral column. My first response was, well Grant was right, now I have to be more upright on the bike. Not a problem for a chronic cockpit changer like me, anyway...is there a bar I haven't tried? Doubt it. So I put Albatross bars on the Ram, also tried porter bars on another bike, experimenting with various bar heights as well. THIS MADE THINGS WORSE! I went to moustache and albastache bars, with a shorter stem, bars level with the seat, and did much better. The neurologist explained it: with your back bent forward at a gentle angle, 45 degree angle of trunk to horizontal, the vertebral column is bent in a way that opens up the posterior (back) aspect of the column and helps to relieve the compression of the nerve root. An upright posture is more like a series of blocks one on top of another and all the force is directed straight down, compressing things further. I realize this scenario is specific to my particular anatomy but I'm curious to hear about others' experiences with this issue. How has your riding changed as Father Time marches on? Both frames are steel lugged and made in Japan with 4130 tubing and are in excellent condition- no rust but a few scratches here and there. All original paint and components. No high end components though- older Sugino double cranksets with bash guards, Suntour FR derailleurs, Suntour thumbies, Araya wheels. Re: [RBW] Re: Riv handlebars and back pain-your experience?
Note that (at least with my experience using the Flyer and a couple of wide sprung models) that spring performance depends in part on the rider's weight. I tried of Flyer off road after finding a suspension seatpost very comfortable on washboard (the post, a CODA, was cheap and squeaked and I returned it), but my 170 lb couldn't make the Flyer's springs flex enough for comfort. Now of course I ride with less weight on the saddle than some, so perhaps the Flyer works better with an upright position. Aside: a Softride stem and a susp seatpost -- both circa 1995 -- were wonderfully smooth on washboard. But I then discovered fat, soft, 700c off road tires. I even posted on here about it somewhere on the forum. Finally, I started using Brooks* sprung saddles*. No more road shock! No more pain Working great so far!!! Give it a try. It's amazing how the road shock vanishes. The road shock doesn't go into my back anymore, because the seat bounces ever so gently because of the springs and the shock gets dissipated by the springs. All I feel is like I am riding along in a limousine with gentle, soft, rising and falling as the springs flex and dispel the road shock, instead of the bike transferring it to my low back. I use the Brooks Flyers. Might be worth a try for you. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I am so glad some of these nutty (by current society standards) things are helpful, Eric (or at least worth trying out). My wife had her thyroid removed when she was nine (thyroid cancer), and she recently shifted from Synthroid to WP Thyroid. She could talk up all the benefits, but basically it provides real, whole thyroid and from organic animals and I'm not sure what all else is better about it. She raves about it being much better than the synthetic. The dosing schedule provided by the company (if you're on x amount of Synthroid, then take x amount of WP) was significantly off, way too low for my wife, but one she got the dose right, Hey presto! I look forward to the day when, in addition to s/he was/wasn't wearing a helmet, we'll get to read s/he was/wasn't wearing reflective anklebands and a safety vest conforming to ANSI standards in our local newspaper's online edition. The EU countries have road regulations requiring reflective gear be used by cyclists after dark outside of urban areas (conforming to EN1173 or higher), which have been in place since (around) 2010. The military requires motorcyclists (another group with serious SMIDSY problems on the road) to wear ANSI vests, and has for thirty years now. I've not seen any data indicating that these requirements have changed crash rates. Has anyone seen a study? We don't tend to wear safety gear for activities that we consider normal, ordinary and not dangerous, regardless of the actual risks involved. Danger (perceived risk of an event) doesn't necessarily map well to risk (probability of an event). Consequently, we get obese and tolerate distracted driving but we aren't embarrassed to hassle cyclists who aren't equipped with our personal standard for safety gear; this latter behavior extends well beyond the cycling community. Disclosure: I've been hit by a distracted teen driver in my non-chartreuse automobile while waiting at a stoplight. I was not wearing a reflective vest nor was I wearing a crash helmet at the time. [RBW] Re: Riv handlebars and back pain-your experience?
Sadly, I am entirely too familiar with the issue of back pain. In 2013, I ruptured my L5-S1 disc badly enough to require surgery to prevent permanent disability. The MRI I had prior to surgery identified non-trivial problems all along my spine; annular tears in two discs, bulged disks in two more. Good times. What this all means for riding is that, so far, I have been unable to ride pain free. I have 3 bikes now, a 54 Hunqapillar with Boscos, a 56 Atlantis with Noodles, and Brompton... an embarrassment of riches, as they say. I had a bike fit by my physical therapist with the Hunqapillar, and was surprised to learned that I had the fit pretty dialed. She recommended a little more back angle, since the Boscos have my spine almost vertical. My Atlantis with the drops puts me forward a lot more. As things are right now, I can ride the Hunqapillar for a long time (hours) before the ache sets in. On the Atlantis, I get about 90 minutes, tops. I really like having drops on the Atlantis, so, I'm going to experiment with moving the bars up, and maybe a shorter stem, to reduce my back angle. On the Hunqapillar, I'm going back to albatross bars because when I last had them on I was able to ride a 100+ mile day on a short tour just 3 months post-op. Sure, I hurt like hell, but I figured I was going to hurt like hell after a 100 miles regardless. It sucks to have a bad back, but with enough Vitamin I and some finesse dialing in the fit, I can still ride as much as I want to. I hope I can still say that when I take on the Northern Tier in 2016... On Sunday, February 15, 2015 at 8:12:05 PM UTC-8, K Griffin wrote: Your experience and the explanation sounds reasonable. In this case, the former is probably more important, as each of us is slightly different. Even if there were a strong anatomic reason why more vertical than 45 deg would be best your body may not have read the same textbook from which the experts have learned. I'm fortunate not to have the disc issue, but when I have lower back spasms (typically with my prior job), the two things that would really make it feel better would be riding my bike or swimming. My position would be with raised bars compared to most road bikes, but still over far enough to put a nice, natural lean without having to crank my neck to see past my wheel. Kurt Griffin Sioux Falls, SD alan lavine ciga...@gmail.com javascript:: Feb 15 11:56AM -0800 Hello All...Thought I would share this, as I'm sure I'm not the only mature cyclist with intermittent low back pain. Mike, I am 5'10 with a pbh of 87 and I went with the 58. For me, either size would work. I too bought mine without a test ride, though I had a 56 Sam Hillborne. I would make the choice based on the handlebar you intend to use. Drop bars - go with the 54 for the shorter top tube. MTB or swept back bars - go with the 58. My PBH is 87.5 and my primary bike is a 54 Hunq. It sounds to me like you should go for the 58. The Hunqapillar's geometry means a long top tube so your stem/bar combination could also affect your decision. [RBW] Re: Velo News on Bike Weight
I read that article on VeloNews -- really just an excerpt from the book, Faster which is one I think I'd like to read. Peter Adler who at the age of 18 went from 155 lb to 119 lb with undiagnosed Type 1 diabetes, and was most definitely *not* stronger when he finally crawled into an ER in Berkeley, CA/USA On Sunday, February 15, 2015 at 5:41:33 AM UTC-8, Fullylugged wrote: GPP has said as much on the Blug before, but it's nice to see it in the Zeitgiest as well. If a 160 lb rider on a 22lb bike wants a 10% improvement is climbing speed, you need to drop 18 lbs! Going from a Bombadil to a Pinarello Dogma won't get you there. (I don't think. It might be close). Going on a diet and riding a lot of hills will though. http://velonews.competitor.com/2014/08/news/bike-weight-myth-fast-bikes_339880 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
