Thx, Liesl good input, much appreciated will continue to wool

Hi Leslie, I used the TourSacks once on a Riv S24O attached to a baby
Hunq. They were roomy and easy to grab the pair as one unit off the bike. A
tent was easily attached to the deck with the d-rings. And they have more
volume (I think) than the Backabikes. No complaints whatever for that
 application.

Here's why I went Backabikes: sometimes I just want/need only one bag in
back. Sometimes I need to lash something on the rack that can't be lashed
using d-rings. Sometimes I want to attach my old baggins loafer, again,
which can't be lashed using d-rings. But taking them off loaded isn't a
snap as I described earlier. They are though super easy to store and don't
take up much room at all with one tucked into the other and then flattened.
(My guess is that the TourSacks would take up a fair bit more of room)

So think about how you expect to use them and what's important to you with
 respect to function.

Hope this is helpful. Good luck!

I'd just leave the nuts in, if I were you. Rivets are cool, but if it's

I pounded on the rivet post side, with the top of the rivet on a piece of

inside the cantle, and then tapping on the rivet head.

Good luck!

[RBW] Re: Klean Kanteen Conversion Questons

2015-03-01 Thread Benedikt
I use a 16 oz insulated for my coffee on my daily commute most every day. I
do use the sippy cup lid with no problems but it needs to be on the seat
tube bottle rack or yes it will leak. I also use some of the 27 oz water
bottles. Not insulated. Both the 16 oz insulated and the 27 oz uninsulated
fit absolutely wonderfully in my King Cage Iris water bottle cages.
I LOVE the King Cage Iris water bottle cage. Regular plastic water bottles
fit super snug. It's beautiful, well made. Made in the USA.

On Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 7:08:39 AM UTC-8, Deacon Patrick wrote:

What is your experience with insulated/uninsulated Klean Kanteen bottles.
Has anyone used the insulated as a camping mug? Used the single-walled one
as your water boiling pot? Carried a 40 or 64 oz one in the velcro on/Irish
 strap secured cage manner?

 More details:

I am now converting to using Klean Kanteen bottles (from the “glass” lined
things Specialized makes) after 2/3rd of my bottles popped out of my
standard cages last fall and I need to replace then anyway, as well as
hearing the reports from folks here of how much better Iris cages hold
 bottles on trails, washboard, etc.

Between insulated and single-walled, and the larger bottles there seem to
be some great options for various uses., I’m thinking:

 (1) insulated 20 oz. bottle: mostly to help keep things cool in summer (I
drink very little when it’s below freezing, and so seldom that it would be
frozen anyway on a longer ride, without being inside my jacket. Also as my
 coffee/tea mug when bikepacking.

 (2) uninsulated 28 oz. bottle: for daily ride increased volume of
capacity, and for boiling water over the firebox when bikepacking.

 (1) uninsulated 40 or 64 oz. with velcro on cage using Irish straps to
secure it for bikepacking and extra water capacity. Suggestions on wear to
 strap this beastie?

On the Hunqapillar, this gives me up to 76 oz. for daily rides, 140 oz.
capacity for bikepacking (plus a 100 oz bladder if needed, but it’s hard to
 use and tastes plasticy.)

 Thoughts, suggestions?

 With abandon,
 Patrick

[RBW] Has anyone tried the short Berthoud fenders?

2015-03-01 Thread Tom Harrop
Hi all,

Just finished with a cockpit switch from drops to bosco bars on the daily
driver Bombadil:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-U1jrIfVIa-s/VPMd72_TrlI/ANc/PY0U4KyYZ-U/s1600/b1.png

I also switched back from v-brakes to Shimano CX70 cantis, with the tektro
fork-mounted cable hanger that we discussed here a week or two ago:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-cKe9Xud-HBA/VPMeR6TyEAI/ANk/VJLE9BSfUeA/s1600/b2.png

(The dent, I mean 'dimple' in the fender was my attempt to prevent the
housing stop on the v-brake from scraping against the fender).

Anyway, this has moved the mini rack forward and down a bit (as expected),
but now the tab on the rack makes fender clearance a little close for
comfort:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-OE8SXdHziCU/VPMemYb4lsI/ANs/s2mOkhSEGRM/s1600/b3.png

Sorry about the shoddy photo but the Director of Bike Documentation is not
available to take photos today so I had to do them myself. You can't really
tell how close it is from that shot but when I lean on the handlebars (I
guess causing the fork to flex) the fender sometimes brushes the tyre. I
could dremel off the front of the fender behind the rack tab but I don't
have the skills to do a pretty job of it. I'm thinking, since I'm in France
and they're easy to get, the simplest thing would be just to switch to the
short version of the Berthoud fenders, but I haven't been able to google up
any images of them in combination with a mini rack or Mark's rack etc. Has
anyone tried it? Did you find the coverage adequate for stuff in the
basket/bags on the rack? Any pictures would be appreciated too of course,
as would other suggestions or comments!

Thanks,

Tom

I found this one on Amazon but it's $205...

Plus 20 gallons of solvent, may put this in the category of maybe

I also do some work on my cars though and it would be nice to have for
that as well. So maybe the dual use will justify it ;)

Camera bags are great, but bag inserts are a nice way to go if you already

 The Timbuk2 Snoop Insert

is a nice way to go, if you already have a messenger bag. You can buy the
same size insert as your bag to completely fill the main compartment, or
you can get the insert that is one size down to still have some room left
for other things.I have a Small insert in a Medium bag, and it holds most
 all of my gear.

The Shopsack / Wald basket combo is perhaps the most perfect bike
accessory. It is the best commute and errand running setup I've used, and
what I really wanted was an insert to work with the ShopSack.

A Camaroo insert is a nice, smaller bag insert. I have the Express Insert

Micro Four Third / Mirrorless Camera, which snuggles nicely into a Medium
Shopsack. I like it for on the bike. I can access my gear while straddling
the bike and keeping anything from moving around on me. It's also really
good for when you pull the Shopsack off the bike and carry it ... wherever
you are headed. My bag is about 8.5 x 6 x 4 and holds the camera, up to 4
lenses, and various things. It takes up less than half of the zippable
capacity of the Medium Shopsack, leaving space for your tools, personables
 and sweater.

[RBW] Re: Noodle to Albatross Conversion - Final Questions

2015-03-01 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
The Riv catalog had made mention of the heat-treated aluminum Alba bar
being stronger, but it appears that you've considered that and deemed the
CrMo version appropriate for your use. There's of course the risk of rust
but if you spray the insides with something like Boeshield, you should be
fine.

The MTB brake levers that Riv sell are fine. I have a set that has seen
many miles on a CA 4-season commuter and they are no fuss, although I don't
particular like that part of the barrel adjuster is plastic (not a
structural concern). I've recently got a set of the Tektro Mountain brake
levers from Riv that are about the same price (but don't come with cables),
and they're quite comfortable and compatible with my R559 brakes (pull
ratio-wise). Plus they look better (subjective) and are lighter (objective,
but you may not care).

Benz,

When I was putting my order together at Rivendell, the Tektro Mountain
levers were my first choice. Unfortunately, they are currently out of
stock (perhaps you get the last set!). I'm weighing whether to order the
bars now and wait for the Tektro brake levers to come back in stock, or
just order the bars and Shimano levers now.

On your Tektro levers, is the barrel adjuster metal? I do prefer that the
Tektro adjuster is silver, rather than the black adjuster on the Shimano.

You might be able to match it to the photos of the pages on this site (by
appearance):

Also, I'm a big enough Bridgestone geek that if you send me a description of
color and decal details, I could probably ID it if it happens to be from 1989
through 1994. 1988 and earlier I don't know as well, but I could try.

 Hi,
After careful deliberation I am deciding to offer my Quickbeam for sale.
It's one of the green one's. 54 cm. I bought it new as a frame and fork,
but it's pretty close to stock. It has a set of stock quickbeam wheels that
I bought from someone who modified their quickbeam to 650b.

It has a phil wood bottom bracket that was rebuilt at phil wood just before
I installed it. At the moment it has an old no name saddle as Ive been
working on recovering the brooks saddle that was on it. I could include the
brooks if anyone is interested in a recovered saddle.

The handlebar is an albatross bar that is flipped upside down and with about
an inch cut off the ends. Nitto dirt drop stem. The seat post is decent,
off an older 80's vintage trek. Pedals are shimano, the ones that are spd
on one side and standard cage pedal on the other side.

It has a rear rack and fenders (the back one has about 6 inches cut off, to
 facilitate wheel removal.)

I've committed the sin of removing the decals as well. I'm taking it in
tomorrow to get it tuned up and cleaned up a bit and I'll post more photos

It does have a few nicks in the paint, but nothing more than that. I'm

interested I'll probably list it on craigslist in a week or two.

I live in San Francisco and I would prefer to sell to someone in the region,
but I wouldn't completely rule out shipping for the right situation.

PS: I also have an sturmey archer S3X wheel that is not on the bike. I
honestly never used it or set it up, but I do have the bar end shifter,
cable and other bits. The rim is a velocity dyad if that makes any
difference. This could go with the bike, or perhaps be sold separately
 depending on interest.

[RBW] Re: Solvent tank for drivetrain cleaning

2015-03-01 Thread Beth H
Jim -- I use El Duke degreaser (available in 12 oz. bottles at Rivendell:
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/gooduke.htm) in one of those pink tubs
that hospitals used to send patients home with. It's big enough to hold a
crankset and everything else. I have on hand an assortment of brushes
ranging from Park tool skinny brush to big fat solvent tank style (fr
Harbor Freight) to a few old toothbrushes, enough to reach all the nooks
and crannies in drive-train parts. Since El Duke is plant-based, I don't
worry about toxins and don't even bother wearing gloves half the time. I
drop the parts in, let them soak for about twenty minutes, and then scrub
away. Carthartic and cleansing.
When I'm done, I remove the parts rinse with hot water, and hang them up to
dry. I let the liquid in the tub settle, and then I carefully pour off the
top into a jar; it's usually good for at least one more use (two if it's
not too gunky and I pour carefully).
Since discovering El Duke, I no longer use synthetic solvents.

[RBW] Brooks Saddle Leather replacement

2015-03-01 Thread 'john elliott' via RBW Owners Bunch
Has anyone on this list ever replaced the leather on a brooks saddle. I'm
riding on a 90 percent finished recovered saddle. I haven't finished the
final trim and it's installed with brass bolts and nuts instead of rivets.
It turned out better than expected in terms of comfort. I haven't finished
it because I cannot live with my other seat for even a few days.

I'm about to put in the rivets, but I'm not sure what to use for the back
of the rivets to give them the right shape. Maybe another hammer...

any thoughts would be appreciated.

PS: Anyone have a brooks with trashed leather they want to donate?

[RBW] Re: Has anyone tried the short Berthoud fenders?

2015-03-01 Thread ted
Tom,

I would bend the rack legs a bit to tip the rack up. Straighten them a bit
at the midpoint where there is a distinct kink in them, then bend the whole
legs back just a bit where they meet the rack. This combination will make
them longer and raise the front of the rack. I would also bend the tang so
that everything is stress free and lines up properly without forcing. If
your rack was level before, and you do this to make it level now, then the
rack will be further foreword and higher than is was before you introduced
the fork mount cable stop. That is you get more clearance not less.

I have done this sort of thing a couple of times to Nitto mini racks to get
them sitting level. Im sort of fussy about that.

good luck

My Atlantis build had a cozy area, too. I was using plastic fenders, and a
Nitto Big Front Rack, but I was concerned about one of the cross bars on
the top platform of the rack getting in the way. Turns out I lucked out
and the short SKS fender didn't even get there.

danger zone https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/16054463535/

But it also was clear that the underside of my stuff in the basket wasn't
going to be protected so I made a plastic piece to protect the entire
underside of my basket, making up for the coverage shortcomings of my
fender.

Absolutely make your own solution!

No I've got the Big Front set at the minimum height, in order to stay below
the brakes. Higher would get me more clearance above the tire, but would
hit the brakes.

Oh, I see. I hadn't even thought of cantis vs. rack at the stud area. Lotta
strands to keep in old Duder's head! So one would have the same issue on
any 700C bike with cantis... something lower-profile e.g. CX70s or Paul
Touring wouldn't make any difference?

Lovely build by the way. Have you attached the fender stays to one of the
spare eyelets on the rack from the inside?

Ed Litton would be my first call to replace that. He did the warranty work

[RBW] Noodle to Albatross Conversion - Final Questions

2015-03-01 Thread SeanMac
I've spent quite a bit of time this winter contemplating a project to
convert my early 1990 Trek 520 Touring bike to a more upright, around
town bike. The bike is all set with fenders and racks. The next step is
to replace the Noodles with Albatross bars. Here are my questions.

First, given that I have absolutely no concern about the weight of this
bike, is there any reason NOT to to buy the $68 CrMo Albas that Riv
offers? Since this bike will be ridden on roads only, I can't see any
reason to spend $90 to buy the lighter and stronger heat treated aluminum
version of the Alba.

Secondly, I am curious if anyone has used the Shimano MTB brake lever that
Rivendell sells. It seems like a good, solid, relatively nice-looking
brake lever. I will be using it to pull Tektro 559 sidepull brakes.

Thanks for your thoughts.

yeah, i have both the steel and aluminum albatross bars. aside from minor
weight gain, they are nearly identical and lovely. for around town and
almost anything else, the steel will be plenty strong. i also have the

can also find them really cheap if you do a little searching.

[RBW] Camera Bag companion for ShopSack / Wald Basket

2015-03-01 Thread Roger
Recently, I've been working on my camera skills in conjunction with
investing in new camera gear (Olympus EM10 with several native and adaped
lenses), and have been looking for a good way to carry an outing's worth of
equipment along in a secure fashion.

Camera bags are great, but bag inserts are a nice way to go if you already
have a main bag you like and just want a camera bag to fit inside.

The Timbuk2 Snoop Insert
http://www.timbuk2.com/snoop-camera-insert/869.html?dwvar_869_size=3dwvar_869_color=2076mkwid=sL8s6jPW1pkw=timbuk2%20snoop%20insertpcrid=48320977024pdv=cgclid=CMLMyZn4h8QCFYiVfgodQg0AUw

is a nice way to go, if you already have a messenger bag.

I have the Express Insert
https://www.flickr.com/photos/56856126@N02/sets/72157651041432016/with/16498118769/for

Sean,

The Tektro's adjusters are all metal, versus the hybrid metal-plastic piece
on the Shimano. To be honest, this really is nit-picking, since the plastic
part is the ring that holds the adjustment and it is therefore not a
critical part at all. And there are nice, cheap aluminum replacements on
eBay if one was really bothered by it being plastic. The Shimano's body is
painted though, so if you like metallic, shiny things, you may want to wait
for the Tektro.

You can't go wrong with either, so if it's up to me, I'll weigh patience
against getting the (nearer) perfect thing.

stock (perhaps you get the last set!). I'm weighing whether to order the

just order the bars and Shimano levers now.

On your Tektro levers, is the barrel adjuster metal? I do prefer that the
Tektro adjuster is silver, rather than the black adjuster on the Shimano.

Michael,

Your Vermont problem is the same over here in the southwest (Pittsburgh).
Average February temp. this year was 18.5°F, second to 1979 when it was
18.0°F.

I will take -12°F over 35° and raining any day though, and I think I'll
have the chance to compare soon. 33° and snowing now. Shoveled the wet
stuff off the walks and driveway twice already. Funny things happen when it
get s this cold, when the DPW switches to calcium chloride the road can
have wetness on it but the process of spraying off your tires must reduce
the ionization and the it starts to freeze onto everything. My front fender
mudflap has been mighty in preventing subsequent frozen slush mechanical
failures this winter.
