That's interesting. My wife is from China, and I see a lot of people there
pedal with the saddles too low compared to our western ideas. She has
several relatives who have ridden for years that way and their knees are
fine, she says, so maybe we westerners are doing something wrong.

Re: [RBW] Re: Romulus

2015-05-22 Thread Tim Gavin
The San Marcos would compare in temperament, but at that size it's 650b.
Which can be a good thing, but may not be what you want.

I bought a 51 cm San Marcos for my girlfriend, and she loves it. It's a
lighter steel bike, but still totally capable of touring (for a light
rider).

The Homer is probably a little bit stouter than the Romulus, and is 650b in
your frame size range.

The Roadeo is closest current Riv to your Rom (700c, lighter tubing).

The Soma Stanyan may be an option? 700c, lugs, roughly the same tubeset as
the San Marcos.

For even more getting off Highway 1, instead of exiting at Pescadero
Creek Road, take Stage Road just north of San Gregorio. That takes you
to Pescadero, where you can go left on Pescadero Creek Road, then take
Cloverdale Gazos Creek as Bill describes. Stage Road has two
moderate climbs, but it's deserted and beautiful.

still make it to Santa Cruz on Day 1. All the Central Coast Randonneurs
 know that loop.

estimating weeks to months for the cleanup so likely the campgrounds will

In BPC this is the Santa Ynez Valley Alternate. San Marcos Pass gets lots
of high speed traffic BUT there is an old road roughly paralleling SR 154.
BPC says at mile 36.5 start 4 mile climb. Before that, on the left side
of the highway look for Paradise Rd or a sign to Paradise. Take this,
keeping the main highway in sight on your right (there are a couple of
forks). This road crosses under the main highway where it is up on a very
tall bridge and continues up to the Cold Spring Tavern and eventually
rejoins SR 154 at the summit. It has steeper sections but is lightly
trafficked and more scenic. After you re-join SR 154, it's all downhill to
Santa Barbara. A couple of miles down from the pass, on your right is Old
San Marcos Pass Rd, another lightly trafficked alternate that ends at
Cathedral Oaks Rd. Turn left (east) on Cathedral Oaks, the right (south) on
Turnpike Rd (at Tucker's Grove park). After Turnpike crosses the 101
freeway RR tracks, turn left on Hollister (near San Marcos HS) to re-join
 the BPC route.

[RBW] Hammock suggestions for S24O type outings.

2015-05-22 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'm going nuts waiting for Colorado to dry out, and it's still raining.
Daydreaming of long hot dusty rides for some overnight camping has been
relief.

My old Kelty Zen 2 person tent has been fine, although it's klunky, showing
it's age, and I know replacing it is on the horizon. Until last year, I
assumed it would be with an updated tent, but I am very intrigued now with
the idea of a hammock. Specifically some of the claims regarding comfort.
I'm not a particularly good sleeper anyway, so camping is generally a night
of tossing and turning in my bag. I'm curious if this is familiar to anyone
here? If so, has a hammock made any difference?

My current set up is either a thermarest inflatable or Z foam pad, with a
down mummy style bag. Would my pads still work in a hammock for insulation,
or do you have to use some sort of hanging insulator?

So far the ENO seems to be a front runner just on popularity. But then
theres tarps, netting, straps, etc that appear to get added on often too.
Aside from some random netted hammocks, I have little experience with them,
and certainly no overnight use. I've considered trying to find one used and
try it bare bones just to see if I could even nap in it. Or maybe take it
along while camping with my wife and daughter?

[RBW] Re: Hammock suggestions for S24O type outings.

2015-05-22 Thread Ginz
I use a Hennessey Hammock with a Thermarest ridge rest pad. A pad might be
needed for insulation on a cold night, but not for cushiness. An
inflatable pad is probably going to shift around and drive you nuts.

Give it a try. I'm a side sleeper and sleeping on the ground is no fun for
me. Once I got the hammock, I slept straight through. My advice is to
figure out if you want a symmetrical or asymmetrical design, zipper or
velcro (I like the zipper), and get the biggest fly you can. If it rains,
you don't want to be trapped in the hammock all day and a large fly will
give you a place to sit, cook, etc.

This is a few years old now, with new products to market -- but here were
my post-tour thoughts after SF-SB in 2011:

https://veloflaneur.wordpress.com/2011/07/26/7-day-tour-what-i-brought/

Don't bring much in terms of clothing. In general, two versions of on-bike
clothing (2 wool t-shirts, 2 shorts, 2 pair wool socks, with 1
seersucker/chambray/SPF collared overshirt as the exception), and 1 set of
off-bike clothes (lightweight pants, camp t-shirt, down jacket, swim
trunks). The coast will be wet in the morning during the summer, but rain
is highly unlikely. A small quick-dry camp towel can be hung off the back
while riding. Honestly, keeping things dry is the challenge, even in
drought, and especially north of SLO.

[RBW] Romulus

2015-05-22 Thread Joe Bernard
The SOMA San Marcos seems a good stand-in for the Romulus..the first batch were
even the same color! You'll want to check the sizing chart at rivbike.com,
though..they're sized differently so you'll be riding a smaller-number frame.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for wheel security?

2015-05-22 Thread Jeff Ong
I use Pinheads... same basic idea as Pitlocks, also have on a few bikes
keyed alike. They're a slight pain to use compared to QR skewers, but I
feel better leaving those bikes locked outside for a few hours. The design
seems *somewhat* more defeatable than Pitlocks, but it's not like I'm
running $2000 Enve wheels or anything.

[RBW] WTB: Nitto M106 NAS Handlebar

2015-05-22 Thread Jack K
Hey RBWOB'ers,,

I'm interested in trying a Nitto M106 NAS handlebar, but the new price of
this rare beast is more than a bit offputting. Anyone has a used one that's
surplus to their needs? 42 cm width would be perfect, but I've used 40 and
44 in other bars without issue. Anyone?

The bend on the M106 NAS appears similar to the Soma HWY 1, but the Nitto
has slightly less drop and very slightly more reach -- and, of course, is
higher quality and 3-4X the price! Photo of the Nitto M106 NAS is attached
for your handlebar viewing pleasure.

Cheers and safe riding!

[RBW] Re: Short Term Ride Review: QB and the 2 speed fixed Bendix

2015-05-22 Thread John Wilson
John,

Thanks for your review of the Bendix 2-speed fixed conversion. I found that
article a few years ago, rounded up some parts, and had a hub welded up.
Still haven't built up a wheel, but I think I'm going to use it for a foul
weather/winter bike. My close to home ride is a 20+ mile rail trail loop.
It's flat, but there's a considerable climb back to my home from the trail,
and at the end of the ride.

Anyway, thanks for the motivation.

Best,
John Wilson

On Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at 9:36:45 PM UTC-4, JohnS wrote:

I'll start with a little back ground on the Bendix modification. I found
this review about a year ago and it was what got me in the market for a
QB/S1 since the Bendix requires an OLD of 120mm. As you all know there
isn't another production bike quite like it with this spacing. I've been
riding the QB with the Bendix for about three months, so this is a short
term review, will provide a more comprehensive review a the end of the
 season.

 http://www.63xc.com/genng/bikesmith.htm

The upside to the modified Bendix hub are the following:
 1. Cruising gear is fixed, nearly 100% efficiency, same as any other fixed
gear bike. Rides just like one.
 2. Shift on the fly, no need to get off the bike, loosen wheel, move
 chain... so on.
 3. Down shift is 25% of the cruising gear. For me this means I'm using the
cruising gear like normal, up and down rolling hills, easily 90% of the
ride, if not more. The low gear is there for steep up hills or sustained
head winds. As an example I got in a 33 mile ride on Sunday afternoon, at
the most 1 to 2 miles were in the low gear. All the rest were about working
 the fixed gear.
 4. Simplicity, few moving parts within the hub and as Bobby B. noted, they
are stout. I've rebuilt a couple Sturmey Archer AW 3 speed hubs and the
modified Bendix has a fraction of the parts.

As with everything there are downsides:
 1. DO NOT DOWN SHIFT AT SPEED! This is a two speed fixed hub, meaning you
shift from one fixed gear to another fixed gear. Going from a cadence of 80
to 100 could throw you off the bike. I found this out the hard way, luckily
I rode it out and didn't crash, but it was pretty scary. Up shift isn't as
 critical, just ease up some.
 2. This is a bolt on hub, you need to carry wrenches to take the wheel off
should you need to fix a flat.
 3. It is heavy, at around 3 pounds. At least the weight is at the hub so
the rotational forces don't play into the energy to move it.
 4. The 18 tooth cog is integral to the hub and can not be changed. You
have to change your chain ring to make adjustments to the gear ratio.
 5. The cog requires an 1/8 inch chain.
 6. Requires some sort of friction mode shifter, but the choice is yours.
I'm using an old school Campy down tube shifter and cable guide, very
minimal set up, forward is for the low gear, back is the cruising gear.
 7. Because of the shift cable, I'm not likely to loosen and move the wheel
to take advantage of a crank with two chain rings.
 8. No conversion to a free wheel, but I suppose you could use the hub as
 is with the coaster brake.
 9. Bearing are not sealed. Will require regular maintenance. I'm using
Phil Wood tenacious oil on the gears and the two bearings near the gears. I
used Park grease on the left bearings.
 10. This is not an off the shelf part. The hub needs to be welded.
Fortunately I found a professional welder who does the MIG welding for $25.

Overall, having a two speed fixed gear bike is great! I live in a hilly
area and the low gear just makes fixed gear riding a really fun experience.
Without it, I would be limited to less hilly roads, having to walk up more
hills or would have to switch back to a geared bike. A geared bike would
not be the end of the world, but my preference for the past four years is
 to ride fixed.

I am selling the first Rivendell that I ever purchased new. It is a 61 cm

long been one of my favorite Riv’s, but I have not ridden it too often in
the past few years, mainly because it still has drop bars. I much prefer
Alba’s these days, which all my other bikes now have. I just can’t see
this frame without the Noodles that it came with. It really is a road bike,
and most of my rides these days are commutes or fireroads.

The RBW descriptive about this frame was :

*“The Romulus is a road frame, virtually interchangeable with the
Rambouillet, and it rides dreamily. But if you're reasonably skillful and
have reasonable judgement, you'll find it a delight on fire trails as well
(with appropriate tires). The cantilver brakes open up the area under the
crown, and let's a lot of things happen there. When you pick your parts
from this list, we'll make sure they all add up to a smart, working bike.
Any questions, just ask, we're happy to answer anything. Toe clip overlap
will happen on 55cm 57cm frames, depending on your tire, and fenders.
It's not a big deal, not worth fretting about, and most certainly is not a
design goof. But some folks can't live with it, and if you're among 'em
don't get one of these. SIZING: Refer to page 76 in the catalogue, to get
your PBH. Your frame size is PBH minus 25 to 27. If minus 25 lands you on a
 61 and minus 27 says a 59.”*

I have about 3800 miles on the frame and drivetrain. I don’t baby my
bikes, so it has reasonable beausage, but no dents. Always garaged.
Mechanically, I take good cars of my bikes. However, I don’t wash and clean
them often, and barely did a cursory wipe-down to prep for this sale. Just
 not my thing.

The longest single ride I took on this frame was an Oregon coast ride in
2007. I also have ridden it in several local centuries.

I am asking $850 + cost of shipping. If you live within 30 minutes of my
home in San Francisco (near the Golden Gate Bridge) I will bring it to you.
PayPal is OK, otherwise a cashiers check from USPS.

[RBW] Re: Hammock suggestions for S24O type outings.

2015-05-22 Thread NickBull
I also use a Hennessey hammock and it is so so so much more comfortable
than sleeping on the ground. Because my setup before starting with the
hammock was tarp camping with a Thermarest ultralight inflatable, that's
what I have continued to use in the hammock. I've never noticed it
shifting around. I do have a Z-pad that I only used once because it is too
thin for sleeping on the ground. Maybe I'll try that in the hammock some
day. I'm really only using the pad because my sleeping bag is a quilt
that covers me from the top. For warm nights, I probably wouldn't even
need the pad.

Give it a try. I'm a side sleeper and sleeping on the ground is no fun
for me. Once I got the hammock, I slept straight through. My advice is to
figure out if you want a symmetrical or asymmetrical design, zipper or
velcro (I like the zipper), and get the biggest fly you can. If it rains,
you don't want to be trapped in the hammock all day and a large fly will
give you a place to sit, cook, etc.

like it was all about the rack mount. Got me intrigued as well but mine is
a canti Hillborne so the split wasn't need. I did have to grind out the
slot on the connection tab on my p50s to get the fender all the way up to
the fork. I'm sure I can get 42s in there now (been using 40s) but I'm
thinking of seeing if I can get my new 45 Smart Sam's in there. Doubting
that but summer break just started so I may find a little more time to mess

[RBW] Re: What is your preferred position for Paul Thumbies on Alba's?

2015-05-22 Thread Shoji Takahashi
I had thumbies set up normal like Kellie, and inside like Keven (as
seen on Rivbike). I've since moved to Shimano deerhead shifters, also
mounted inside.

Here's a pic of the albas with thumbies:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/stakx/13961703460/in/album-72157644332271299/

The main advantage of inside mounting is being able to grip forward of the
brake levers. (I have my levers mounted far back as I sometimes have a kid
on a Yepp Mini front-mounted bike seat.)

The normal set up works great for bullmoose bars:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/stakx/13022887783/in/album-72157644332271299/

In any event, +1 for Patrick's advice-- try 'em out. (Unfortunately, you'll
have to re-cable. So maybe mount 'em up and try them before cabling?)

Happy riding,
Shoji

Buy a hammock with the Python Straps, and you can set it up in under 5

I have one. Haven't used it for actual camping yet, but I love taking it

Speaking of side routes, I highly recommend getting off Hwy1 at Pescadero
Creek Road, right on Cloverdale Road, right on Gazos Creek Road. That adds
a tiny bit of distance and a bit of climbing but it is removed from the Hwy
1 traffic for a bit, and takes you through a couple cute towns. You'll
still make it to Santa Cruz on Day 1. All the Central Coast Randonneurs
know that loop.

Turn left (east) on Cathedral Oaks, the right (south)
on Turnpike Rd (at Tucker's Grove park). After Turnpike crosses the 101
freeway RR tracks, turn left on Hollister (near San Marcos HS) to re-join
 the BPC route.

c. I'm hoping to replace my 61cm Romulus. It's good, but I want great.
 The things I don't like are (A, B, C)
d. I'm hoping to replace my 61cm Romulus because it's the wrong size. I
need something bigger/smaller
e. I'm hoping to replace my 61cm Romulus. It's perfect but I want wider
tires and the ability to load it up
f. I'm hoping to replace my 61cm Romulus. A 61cm Roadeo would be
perfect, but my budget is $$.

etc etc etc. That context would really help you access the wealth of
experiences that this group has.

My answer would be: I'm hoping to replace my 53cm Romulus because I stupidly
sold it 7 years ago thinking I was going to recumbents full time, and I've
never seen one in that size for sale again. Doh!

Carla,

I can't tell you how cool this is. I approached Buchanan's a few years ago
about a custom fork (that I didn't end up committing to) and I've talked to
them a couple of times, in extremely general terms, about a custom
frameset. I've also had them do some framework on a 1983 MTB I own. It
will be exciting to watch your bike come together. Do you have a rendering
from a program like BikeCad, that shows what the final bike will look like?
Did you design the bike or did you give him a general idea and let him
design it?

Do Dewayne and Tobin both build framesets? I had assumed it was just Tobin
doing the building.

I think I'll run with the bar ends for a little bit and then give the stem
shifters a try. I need to get a new bottom bracket and seat post for this
new build first. Hopefully can buy the stem shifter mount in a few months.

Great ideas everyone. It's always fun to learn the little ways people
prefer their bikes.

[RBW] Re: sf-la coast tour thoughts and preparation

2015-05-22 Thread dougP
Drew:

I agree with the comments that you are taking too many clothes. 2 t-shirts
made of a quick dry material are adequate. One wool LS jersey one SS
plus the Ts give you plenty of layering options. Rain jacket yes but
leave the down at home. One pair of pants. I use a cargo net like
Rivendell sells to hold my stuff on the rear rack, and it is a convenient
place to put damp laundry that hasn't dried out overnight. 10' of
clothesline plus a few clothes pins are handy for drying in camp and don't
take much space.

Personally I've found multi-tools to be highly over-rated. Sure, they have
everything in the world BUT they are inconvenient to use (every tried to
use the chain breaker on one?). Go over your own bike see what it
needs. On my Atlantis (a pretty standard Riv build), 3-4 allen keys, a
small screwdriver, 8 10 mm wrenches (Park makes a very thin one) take
care of most common adjustments. Trade the crescent wrench for a real
chain breaker. I've lugged around a cassette cracker one each
replacement spokes and have never used them, but I think that wards off
broken spokes.

Where in LA are you ending? And how are you getting home? Those points
could effect your routing at the end. BPC is based on continuing beyond
LA, and there are various options if this is your end point. At the end of
your trip you'll be tired and interested in making it simple.

I've considered the A. Homer Hilsen as a replacement for my Rom. I hear
some people saying they are very similar and others saying the Homer is a
more robust frame. Will be interested in seeing responses to this post.
Outside of Riv-land I've read positive reviews of the SOMA ES.
Waterford/Gunnnar make sport touring frames which will be similar in
function to your Rom. A San Marcos in your size is probably a double top
tube which you may or may not want.

[RBW] Re: Hammock suggestions for S24O type outings.

2015-05-22 Thread Bill Lindsay
I'm good at sleeping in general, but I too tend to toss and turn on the
ground. I've done several overnighters with Manny where he's been in a
hammock, so I was intrigued to try it. I bought the brand that REI sells.
I forget the brand now. I have a good hammock test spot in my back yard,
and in the summertime, I frequently hang it up there and listen to the
ballgame on AM radio while my kids do the gardening. I tried to do an
overnighter in my back yard and I couldn't do it. The crescent shape it
bends my body in locks my knees hyperextended, which gets uncomfortable
after about 10 minutes. I think I'd need to run a quilt, instead of my
minimalist down mummy bag, so I could have more leg-position options.

So far the ENO seems to be a front runner just on popularity. But then

Aside from some random netted hammocks, I have little experience with them,
and certainly no overnight use. I've considered trying to find one used and
try it bare bones just to see if I could even nap in it. Or maybe take it
along while camping with my wife and daughter?

I like Roo from Kammock. Really well made hammock and well thought out.

A huge double nest hammock with gear loops along the edge so that you can
jury-rig it as a ghetto shelter. The carabiner set-up is spot on and easy.
Kammocks Trap also doubles a water retention and has tent poles in it.

Re: Anne's comment: There's an oil spill at Refugio State Beach, north of
Santa Barbara. You have an option to go inland there. Do so. The
campgrounds along
the coast are closed anyway because of the spill. As of today, they are
estimating weeks to months for the cleanup so likely the campgrounds will
remain closed.

Turn left (east) on Cathedral Oaks, the right (south)
on Turnpike Rd (at Tucker's Grove park). After Turnpike crosses the 101
freeway RR tracks, turn left on Hollister (near San Marcos HS) to re-join
the BPC route.
