[RBW] Re: Car Racks Rivs
I have an earlier model of one of these on my Ford Focus: http://www.rackattack.com/product-pages/yakima-highlite-2-silver-hitch-bike-carrier.asp . The bike doesn't sit in a well, it's suspended from the rack with ties and other gizmos. The best part was it came with a sissy bar that I can put on the Betty (or any other step-through bikes) so I can keep it level with my ex-husband's diamond frame bike. I've had no trouble with fenders, baskets, giant Bosco handlebars, or anything. I've even carried a 42-pound Dutch upright city bicycle on the back of the Focus without problem. The installation, chassis work and rack cost us about $900-ish, but it was money well spent. On Friday, June 12, 2015 at 5:52:05 AM UTC-7, Michael Hechmer wrote: So... The Yakima rack installation instructions specifically say to put the top hook within 2 of the fork, which clearly rules out using it with any top rack, like my Mark's mini. The Saris instructions don't say that is necessary, but the video on their web site shows them setting it up that way. [RBW] Re: Somewhat but not entirely OT: Citronella candles/mosquitos?
Patrick, Is there usually a breeze on your porch? If so you would need to put the burning repellant up wind, but it might be too diluted by the breeze to keep the mosquitoes away. Hawaii, my dad used to breed mosquitoes in his bromeliads, right next to his lanai/porch. This would drive my wife crazy because the mosquitoes were even more attracted to her than I am. We burned mosquito coils but you had to put them up wind from where you sat. There was always breeze, uphill during the day and downhill at night. Even then we had to use citronella mosquito repellent lotion. John -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Altus rear derailer = upgrade from DeerHead
My 1980s Schwinn Paramountain had a 13-30 six speed freewheel. It's a really nice Shimano 600 freewheel, but the 13 and the 15 were toast. It was like the original owner only used the 13 and the 15. You know the type. So, I set the limit screw on my Shimano Deer Head rear derailer to make my bike a 3x4. Then David Banzer was selling some nice freewheels, and I picked up a 13-34 Suntour Winner Pro 5sp freewheel from him. Put on the freewheel and the Deerhead wouldn't take the 34. Not even close. So, I put on an Altus from Riv. Not only did the Altus take the 34 like a champ, but it shifts WAY better than the Deerhead ever did. The Deerhead derailer is definitely old, but it's not loose, floppy, bent. I attribute the difference to the unambiguous design flaw that the Deerhead does not have a slant parallelogram, but the Altus does. The Deerhead has a drop parallelogram. Anyway, besides the fact that the Altus is humorously heavy, and besides the fact that the pulley bushings come bone dry (I lubed them), it is a really great and really cheap rear derailer. Anybody running friction shifting should give it a chance. I have no comment on running it indexed. There is something to be said about letting Shimano take a design to absolute full maturity and then let it trickle down to the very cheapest model. The Altus is that. Bill Lindsay El Cerrito, CA P.S. Let me know if you are nostalgic and want my deerhead rear der. I'm keeping the deerhead front, for a couple reasons. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: stem for albastache help
I use a Nitto Dirt Drop 8 stem with B135 Randonneur bars on my '88 Schwinn KOM (a too-longa-top tube mountain bike, in Grant-speak). I have the bars mounted at seat height, and I spend most of the time down in the drops, so the bars and stem are holding up a significant portion of my 225 lbs. I've been riding it on some pretty rugged stuff over the last 2 years, with plenty of bunny hops and a couple wipeouts that rotated the stem in the steerer. No damage, problems, cracks, or creaks yet. The Dirt Drop stems are forged and heat treated. I'm not sure why Harris has that recommendation; you usually see that caveat for non-heat treated items like Dove bars. On Wed, Jul 1, 2015 at 3:02 AM, Joe Bernard joerem...@gmail.com wrote: Huh, I've never heard of that. [RBW] Re: Rewiring a battery powered taillight for use with a generator hub?
Hi Kai, It's technically feasible, but probably not worth it. First you'd have to determine what voltage your light was built for (how many batteries does it take, what type, and how are they connected-- series or parallel?). Dynamos output 6V nominally. Then you'd have to create a bridge rectifier circuit to convert the AC generator output to DC, and you'd have to fit this circuit somewhere inside the taillight. That would be the minimum. You'd also want to install a couple of diodes and rechargeable batteries to allow the batteries to charge while your hub is generating power. It's all very simple but takes up a lot of space if you build it yourself. You're probably just better off getting a dedicated dynamo light. Kind of related. Citronella melts at pretty low temperature. My campbox lives on a high shelf in my garage. My citronella in there melted all over the place. Yuck. Re: [RBW] Re: Off topic alert!! Feedback request.
Thanks, all. So: durability -- no fraying or holes; stretch -- comfort without bagginess; and quick to dry. I won't add comfort, because my baggy cutoffs are comfortable enough that I don't think about comfort when riding, and again, this up to 30 miles. (I have 3 pr of woolen bike shorts in the hypothetical case of longer rides.) Nor will I add looks since my old cutoff Gaps and so forth look good. Hell, even durability: I've got a pair of Gaps that I wore for 10 years as long pants and that are in year 2 as shorts. Color would be a plus, since the khaki does get dirty easily. I will keep an eye out for these, for a sale. As it is, for $75 I can buy 5 pr of GW khakis and pay $10/pair to have them shortened. It would be nice to have a pair of trim shorts that fit well on a bike -- most bike shorts (non-stretchy) that I've worn are too low in waist and too tight in crotch -- Patagonia one, for example, MUSA (old style) for another. Frankly, I'm tempted to buy some simply because they look better with jerseys -- more like traditional bike shorts -- than my khakis. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Car Racks Rivs
Hitch racks that support the wheels and have a hook to hold the top tube such as the Swagman do not work well if you have two large frame bikes to carry. The Thule doubletrack 990 does handle big frame bikes well. It's also easier to move the wheel holders and the wheel holders have clamps over the rims. And everything is lockable. And you can open your trunk while the bikes are there. And the rack folds up when the bikes are off. And all these features are easy to use. I use a roof rack in the spring and summer when I haul lots of bikes frequently but it's nice to remove the roof rack in winter and use this hitch rack. Hi friends, Just a note to again say how much this group means to me. I think of the care and concern with which regard each other, the helpfulness, the kind tone, the generosity given online and off—it is really something special. Parts broken or lost? Someone might send you one. Bike stolen? Alerts go out. Recovering from surgery? Empathy, advice, and well wishes offered. Flumoxed by a technical problem? Many solutions expounded upon (some even might work!) Need advice about a route? Someone's ridden it. Recovered your stolen bike? Cheers erupt. A member of our own passes? Hearts break. Someone forgets and snarks a tiny bit? We all forgive and admit it's just the dregs of winter. Wondering if anyone's posted in the past hour? One of the Patricks to the rescue! Buy a bag from a lister? They might just give it to you as a kindness for a long forgotten post. They are quick dry over normal cotton. They last much much much bettter than any cotton canvas shorts I wear. I like carhart shorts, patagonia stand up shorts, but they fray at the hem and pockets and seat while riding. The mountain Khaki shorts are better wearing, but still fall apart after a couple summers. The durable cotton SWRV shorts look new still after a pretty solid year of riding, including lots of thorny off road rides. [RBW] Re: stem for albastache help
Huh, I've never heard of that. You may want to contact Harris to be sure, but I suspect it's lawyer-speak for don't do downhills with gigantic drop-offs just because the name has 'dirt' in it. DirtDrops were spec'd on the dropbar Bridgestone MB-1 back in the day, and it was most certainly expected to be ridden on trails. This was before suspension and bicycles being hurtled down hills like motocrossers, so Nitto didn't have that to warn against for their product. Nitto Mustache Bars - $50 shipped CONUS - In fine condition, a few scuffs but overall fine. 26.0 clamp. Deore XT 6-speed Thumb Shifters - $30 shipped CONUS - One of the barrel adjusters was replaced with a suntour barrel adjuster, I might have another suntour barrel adjuster in my parts bin if you want them to match. Shifters work great in both friction and index mode. Shimano 8-speed Bar End Shifters - $35 shipped CONUS - The indexing on these is broken, so they only work in index mode. The plastic cover on one of them is cracked too. I replaced these with suntour barcons on my wife's bike. If anything seems unreasonable, I'm open to offers. [RBW] Re: Suggestions please for a Bay Area mountain or mixed terrain ride Friday July 3 or Saturday July 4
Don't bother going to Mt. Diablo if you are in Berkeley and will have a MTB. I highly recommend Joaquin Miller Park in the Oakland hills. Lots of legal singletrack and you can get there by bike w/o too much trouble. Make your way up to Grizzly Peak Blvd and turn left on Skyline. Skyline will take you right there. I would suggest looping in Redwood Park and Roberts Park for addition miles. One classic is to do the Joaquin Miller trails before or after the Eastridge/Westridge loop (CCW is better) in Redwood Park. You can't really get lost because the nearest road isn't far away, but it sure feels like you could. http://www2.oaklandnet.com/oakca1/groups/opr/documents/image/oak041704.pdf If you park a car there, don't leave valuables in the car. Never had any issue personally, but there are plenty of thefts reported. -Ryan On Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at 2:48:48 PM UTC-7, Christian wrote: Hi All, I am in Berkeley visiting family and would love to get a ride in. [RBW] Re: Rewiring a battery powered taillight for use with a generator hub?
I did it to a BM 4D. It was pretty easy with the only downside being I never got a proper RC set-up so as to have stand-light capability. It's been some 5 years and I haven't thought about batteries a single time since. I'd say if you've worked on electronics previously have at it. It's been done and I'm sure there are how-to write-ups on the Internet. If you don't know which is the hot end of a soldering iron, then maybe it's not the project for you, unless you're looking for an easy project to learn on, in which case this may well be a perfect one. Agreed. Pretty solid community. Not everywhere you can a bunch of weirdos on bikes. On Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at 4:37:51 PM UTC-7, Deacon Patrick wrote: Amen! Clearly I post too much. I think of the care and concern with which regard each other, the helpfulness, the kind tone, the generosity given online and off—it is really something special. Parts broken or lost? Many solutions expounded upon (some even might work!) Need advice about a route? Someone's ridden it. Recovered your stolen bike? Cheers erupt. A member of our own passes? Hearts break. Someone forgets and snarks a tiny bit? We all forgive and admit it's just the dregs of winter. Wondering if anyone's posted in the past hour? One of the Patricks to the rescue! Buy a bag from a lister? They might just give it to you as a kindness for a long forgotten post.
