[RBW] Re: Brifters on Noodles?
Dear Joe, Check the reach of the bars. The noodles are a pretty-normal 90mm reach, 140mm drop. If the Salsa bars have a shorter reach, then the levers will be farther away on the noodle than they were on the Salsa. In practice, I use the bulge-formed noodle bar and the Compass 1970's bend bars(115/125). I have to adjust the stem length, but they're both lovely bars with Ergo and Doubletap levers. Congrats! Where in VA? In the DC Metro area there is a pretty good sized Riv community... [RBW] Nervous about my first Riv: Ordered a Cheviot today!
In 40+ years of cycling, I never thought I'd buy something sight unseen without even a test ride. And I never thought I'd buy a mixte. But I've never read a word of complaint or buyer's remorse about Rivs. The love owners seem to have for these bikes is unusual, so I decided it was worth parting with nearly $3K of my hard-earned dollars to get the Chev. I could have thoroughly pimped out a Clementine for much less, but I totally fell for the lugs, the lines, and the whole package. I'm in my early 50's, live in Virginia, and ride for the pure joy of it on paved paths and gravel trails. I'm all for beusage, but want to keep the occasional mud and slime off the important parts. [RBW] Re: IRD Thumbshifters and Quill shift mount questions
My experience is with the IRD stem mount and a couple of single cranksets on my Sam... Yes, you can move your thumb shifter(s) to the stem mount, although you'll have to disconnect the cable (because of the cable adjusters on the thumb mount and stem mount). If you want to just run the RD, I wouldn't bother with the stem mount, however. My favorite orientation (there are several options on the stem mount) has the cable housing and adjuster pointed down, almost parallel to the head tube, and this is pretty much how it would point if you mounted the right thumb shifter on the quill. This orientation uses the shortest amount of housing—Make sure you're careful to give it just enough without leaving an oversized loop/S-curve in the cable. Using the shortest cable housing you can will give a very crisp, positive shifting, similar to downtube shifters. It's also a very minimalist, clean look. As far as running a 1X drivetrain goes, it's important to try to get the straightest chainline you can to the middle cog (achieved by choosing the right bottom bracket, using a SS/track crankset, etc. Also helps a lot to replace the chainring with one designed for single speed/track use, but made for 3/32 chain. The teeth will be taller and there won't be any ramps or tooth variations like on a derailleur chainring. The chain might still bounce off occasionally, especially when you're in the lowest gear. Currently, I use a VO Grand Cru 50.4 BCD crank with a 44t single ring on a 108mm BB. that gives me a perfect chainline to the #5 cog on a 9 spd cassette. I mounted a simple Deda Elementi Dog Fang to protect against chain derailment to the inside while in low gears, and I've heard it working a few times. Previously, I was using an FSA Gimonti track crank with a 42t ring and the Dog Fang. If you can't/don't want to do so much tinkering, you can get something like the Paul chain guard that adjusts to your crank position and fits over the top of the chain and ring to prevent derailment. I've done that too. Some people use a bash guard in the outer ring spot or file the teeth off the outer ring to keep the chain from derailing to the outside, but I haven't had any problem with derailment to the outside (the Paul devise prevents inner or outer derailment). On Thursday, July 9, 2015 at 8:43:08 PM UTC-4, Johnny Alien wrote: When I bought my Hillborne from the fine Riv folks I got the Albatross bars with IRD thumbshifters set up. When Brian was building it up he warned me that while those thumbshifters are fantastic (and they are) that it might be better to go with the stem shifter mount or bar ends to give me max amount of positions on the bars. I really wanted the shifting right by my hands and I don't like bar end shifters that much so I told him it would be fine with the thumbs. I should learn that the Riv folks really know their stuff because after owning it for almost a year now I have decided that I really feel a bit cramped around the brake area because of the shifters. Is it possible to remount the IRD shifters onto the quill shift mount? It seems like it should be possible but I am unsure. My other option is this...I don't use the front shifter at all. I have the wide low double and am always in the larger chainring. I could always just mount the right thumb shifter onto the quill and just drop the left one completely. I assume that as long as I leave the derailer there I could just remove that shifter completely. All of this might free me up to more easily switch to moustache bars later if I want to. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: wtb: Betty Foy (50cm)
Riv definitely made the 50cm Betty, because I have one! They used to make 47cm/52cm/58cm (and possibly one larger size?), then at some point they switched over to 50cm/55cm/60cm sizing. It's similar to the Cheviot sizing now. I've seen a couple Betty's come up for sale on this site the past year. If you like the Cheviot design I believe the 50cm Betty and Cheviot have the same geometry, while the 55cm/60cm Cheviots have longer chainstays than their Betty counterparts. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: San Marcos vs ES
Yes. I generally agree with Grant on threaded vs. threadless. My approach to riding is not going to require any compromises if I use a threaded stem - honestly, I just like to get out there and ride, I don't need to be fastest. The Technomic reference is from my use of them in my lugged steel Treks - I have a mile of stem showing on the largest Trek frame they made...my expectation (given the sloping TT and giant head tube) is that I wouldn't have as much showing on a 63cm San Marcos. My priorities are: A comfortable, well-fitting ride - 94cm PBH here and the 25.5in steel Treks that I ride today (460,560,400) have plenty of Technomic showing to get to level saddle and bars Room for bigger tires - Room for 38c should do. Jim was entirely right about that. We had too many dealers, no infrastructure for them, and not enough bikes to deliver. Plus, a dealer ordinarily gets 30 days or more to pay, and we couldn't afford to offer that. So I agree with all he says here. I'm really sorry he's closed, though. [RBW] RIVELO-PDX RIV deler and servicing bikes
Even tho RIVELO (John) doesn't have a payroll mechanic, it should still be easy to get your Rivwhatever worked on. John has an arrangement with at least two mechanics, one of them a former mechanic down here at RBW. Also, for better or worse, our bikes operate 100 percent with 40-year old technology. Cables work the brakes and derailers, the bottom brackets are simple as pie cartridge units, the cranks show their chainring bolts...there's minimal and often zero black boxing of the mechanisms. If by some trick the rest of us don't know about, you and your bike make it back to 1975, you can trust that your Riv bike won't befuddle any bike mechanic. Portland in 2015 probably has 300 professional good ones, and any good bike mechanic anywhere will feel at home tinkering on a Rivendell. Anyway, I'll stick to the main point here, that Rivendell bikes are mechanical time machines, so...no problem. Plus, John has 100 percent access to our mechanics and all of us here--as will anybody who buys a bike there. We won't travel to PDX to find the source of the click you hear, but you're far from alone out there! Also, for those of you in the area who haven't been by RIVELO, you should know that John is disarmingly casual but knows our bikes through and through. Everybody here misses him. [RBW] Re: Local Rivendell Dealer suggestions for DELMARVA area?
I don't detect MUCH confusion about why we want to open a few dealers, but maybe there's some, so here's the whole thing: Our sales have been about $2.85 million a year for several years straight (a 5-year low of $2.8, and two years of $2.9) I don't know whether that sounds high or low, but what I can say for sure (but at some risk of coming off like a whiner) is that for a company of 12 F/T employees and 6-7 P/Timers, dealing expensive and generally low-margin gear with high development costs and payment terms that tend to crush cash flow--and also, I am happy to say, paying our staff as much as possible and way more than our cpa would like---that $2.9 million is not quite sustainable. I'm 61, not planning any retirement, still totally loving this stuff, and looking forward to doing some more hopefully helpful but definitely fun and satisfying things. I believe that our bikes are good enough to reach more people. I look at the Sam or Chev and now the Clem and then I look at what people are spending in the real world and what they're getting, and I think hey, that too small/unsuitable/dangerous/4-year bike that cost way more than a Sam is not the perfect bike for you---and yet we can't reach these riders all by ourselves, so we need some dealers. To do dealers right means bending and stretching to work with them on their inviolable terms, and hoping they'll bend a little to us (like, paying with a credit card before we ship). That is the tuffy. Selling to even a small number of dealers requires more cash-available than we ever have. We've had an LC of $50,000, and have paid it down to $45,000. I recently talked to our bank about getting more, and we're getting another $100,000 out of it, but even that's not enough to let us proceed with our tempered, realistic plans for 2016. We need another $50K, and we've borrowed already too many times from friends, the occasional employee (always paid back on schedule), my own home equity (may never be paid back), and now we need and are getting some bank help, but not enough. The Big Plan (by our measure) is to have four models in stock most of 2016: Sam, CLEM, Chev, and a new Tourishy bike with that wild new crown. Plus finally, I want to have 20 tandems, complete in the box. Like Clemdems, To me, for us, it seems outrageous and risky, but it is definitely not as risky as staying the way we are. The bikes won't suffer, they'll continue to improve. There's no change in philosophy or anything like that. We're sticking to our guns (although allowing more TIGGING than before). But yes, those four bikes are going to help us, and we're getting a few dealers slowly and carefully. We've got one refusal from a dealer I really wanted and thought would for sure go for it (longtime friend); but it's not happening, so o well. We're opening up at most 10 by the end of the year. It may be seven. Will's doing it, with some guidance from me, retrieved from that decade at Bstone... We're nearly full of dealers. I want one in Marin, maybe Oak/SF, for sure the TC, since I have a daughter in college there (she rides a Trek steel converted mtn bike with fenders, rack, and Bosco bars, which she loves. She should be on a CLEM. Her Glorius is here at home--am not going to sacrifice another one of those to the Twin Cities bike thieves). Anyway...things are fine, changes are in the air, and let me say sincerely--and not as a trick to help it continue---that it is extremely gratifying to know that we have a community of yay-sayers out there, right here. Thanks, and adios para ahora... G -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] PSA: 54 Bleriot on Bay Area CL - $995!
This looks legit since it is being sold at Livermore Cyclery. Seemed like a screaming deal since they are trying to sell it quickly. Re: [RBW] Aloha to Erl (Apologies to the list)
Hah! Just keep in mind that 'paradise' has two rides, clockwise and counter-clockwise. Admittedly they are nice rides. I prefer counter-clockwise as that keeps the beach on your right. Okay, okay, there a few other options as well. For those who haven't traveled to the DC area, I've been corresponding with Erl about the bike trail to Mt Vernon along the river. Wow. It was a super day today with really great weather (after thunderstorms earlier in the week) and even though I didn't manage to hook up with him I still did the ride and owe him a big debt of thanks for letting me know about it. While I wasn't riding a Riv on this trip I was riding a bike that has been to Walnut Creek - twice in fact. How's that for Riv content. I'll get around to a few images in time. Still in the middle of my vacation and spending time around a computer isn't really on the agenda. :-) Aloha all! [RBW] FS: 5 (FIVE!) bikes or framesets available
I'm at a very well-rounded ten, and I can justify having all of them, but I am 100% capacity for what I can physically store (first-world problem). That said, there are other bikes on the incoming roadmap. First off, I've volunteered to be the Team Mechanic for the El Cerrito High School Mountain Bike Racing Team. I'm planning on having that be my main volunteer activity for the entirety of my two kids' six-years at ECHS. So, I'm going to buy a regular 29er race-ish mountain bike. Hydraulic disks, etc. To let that bike in, one bike needs to go. I'm still thinking about getting a Clem, and there are a couple other things that I might be tempted to do moving forward. So, I've got FIVE bikes that I could part with. I'd be happy to sell two and pull back the other three. In no particular order 1. 56cm Orange Bombadil. Bought off the peg from Riv in 2010. Orange powdercoated 2TT Bombadil. Frame/Fork/Headset + matching powdercoated 200mm Bullmoose bars for $1400. Negotiable complete bike PHOTO https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/5236885742/in/album-72157623611013487/ 2. 58cm Gunnar Crosshairs singlespeed. I bought this last summer from off the list. I set it up as a really smart doublespeed. I can change between two gears with no brake adjustment. Waterford built frameset, spec'd to match a Riv in fit. Frame/Fork/Wheelset $1000, negotiable complete bike options. PHOTO https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/14820455111/in/album-72157642798847383/ 3. 59cm Black Mountain Cycles Road. Bought direct from Black Mountain Cycles in 2012. Intended to be my budget-Roadeo. My intent was always to use it as a budget prototype road bike for the next custom road bike I set up. I'm still focussing in on exactly what that custom will be, but I've leaned what I need to learn from this fine bike. $500 Frame/Fork/Headset. Negotiable complete bike. PHOTO https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/10237186425/in/album-72157636508980195/ 4. 1987 22 Schwinn Paramountain Clem. $800 complete. If you are dying to have a CLEM-like bike immediately and are dying to have me buy a real CLEM, then you'll jump at this. Includes the Mt Campee rack and basket and the custom Ruthworks framebag. I'll even throw in my custom handmade corroplast prototype panniers. PHOTO https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/17663099654/in/dateposted-public/ 5. 58cm A. Homer Hilsen. Bought new from Riv in the winter of 2010/11. Ridden on numerous brevets. Now it's become a platform for several of my off-the-wall build configuration notions, as evidenced by it's current setup as a 1x9 with an ultralight $900 wheelset. Frame/fork/headset $1200. Complete bike negotiable. PHOTO https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/16427711380/in/dateposted-public/ This is bad timing on my part because I'll be out of town for a while, but I will bump this post in August. [RBW] Re: PSA: 54 Bleriot on Bay Area CL - $995!
I had a 55 (came with pump peg) I have a 53 (no peg) From that I am assuming anything without a peg is 53 or smaller. I have an 82 pbh. 5' 7 3/4 tall The 53 rides better for me. Both standovers were fine for me. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: PSA: 54 Bleriot on Bay Area CL - $995!
It's a 55, they probably measured 54 c-to-c. I had one and it was ever so slightly too tall for me at 78pbh, 5'-7. It should fit you perfectly, and it's a screaming deal with that Nygel Smythe goodie bag included. Re: [RBW] Re: Didn't see that coming... Segmented Cast Fork Crown on BLUG
What is the minor flaw that will send the crown back for redesign? To my eyes, it's the minimal material between the two louvres, at the point where they just barely overlap. In-line vertically when viewed from the front, and also in-line with the threaded hole at the top. A larger web of metal in that area will make for a stronger grasp of the fork in the crown. Just my opinion, and I bet I'm wrong, it's probably something else really really subtle. - Andrew, Berkeley -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Local Rivendell Dealer suggestions for DELMARVA area?
Until very recently, we didn't have a Riv dealer either (guess where *I* live? :-) I am in the parking lot pic, talking to Grant). Although Rivelo doesn't service bikes, they just sell them :-) It is bogus to think that any competent bike shop can't service your Riv. 99% of my 650b wheels are built by my LBS (a Trek dealer). They also do any wrench work I can't. My mechanics also did a super job helping me out with my 1971 Gitane TdF. Amen, sister. I'm 30 minutes down the road from Bill, and could find excellent reasons for any one of those bikes if I were taller. Although that Paramountain would be sweet with a slammed seatpost.
