Re: [RBW] Re: Post Surgery Therapy

2015-07-14 Thread Richard
David, I had lumbar surgery back in 2005. Titanuim rods, screws and cages.Your
Xray brought it all back. It took me a full year to get back to riding, so
you're doing well to be riding after 6 months. I normally ride between 6-8,000
miles a year now, and my back isn't an issue at all when riding. I use drop
bars and my seat is level with the bars.

I agree that back surgery should only be a last resort, and yes the first 3
months were hell, but the painkillers certainly took the edge off.

[RBW] Nitro F-15 and RK front bag supporters

2015-07-14 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
I have a Nitto F-15 but am curious... do the Nitto F-15 and the RK front bag
supporters basically support the same bags?

I'd guess that the Sackville BarSack may not work as-is on the RK since its
anchor is a leather wrap around the middle of the supporter's frame near the
handlebar, which would seem problematic with the RK's handlebar adapter.

But bags like the Ostrich F-516 or the Berthoud GB192 or even the old Baggins
Boxy bag (I think that was what it was called, anyway) sure seem like they'd
work the RK setup. The dimensions of the RK's frame and the F-15's frame are
very similar.

Anyone with any experience using both to share?

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

[RBW] FS: sackville saddlesack, acorn rando, topo designs pack

2015-07-14 Thread 'Hudson Doerge' via RBW Owners Bunch
Greetings all,
I've got a few nice bags I need to clear out.

First up I've got a ~year old medium saddlesack in tan. Used for commuting,
grocery shopping. Shows normal signs of wear. The only functional issue is one
snaps on one of the closure straps came out. Riv sells the straps separately if
you want to replace it. I'm sure it could be repaired at home as well.
Asking $160 shipped.

Next I've got an almost new condition acorn rando bag for sale. This is the
standard, not tall, size in tan. Used for about a month. Has not had a decaleur
installed.
Asking $180 shipped.

Finally I've got a topo designs klettersack 22l backpack in olive green I'm
hoping to sell. Used a handful of times, but in very good shape with few signs
of wear.
Asking $120 shipped.

All bags will ship ups ground from Austin, Texas. I prefer payment via PayPal.

You can find photos on my Flickr here:

If you have any questions or want more pictures just let me know!

On Friday, July 10, 2015 at 7:15:20 PM UTC-7, Eunice Chang wrote:

I've been meaning to write this since last year.

Most of you know Seth Vidal, who frequented RBW list and who was killed in
a hit and run two years ago. One of the things he liked was the ride
reports. He'd share them with me and we'd plan rides.

I joined the list a few months after he died, mostly just to update the
group, but I've also read some of your ride reports, and they were very,
very helpful on getting me back on the bike and rediscovering a new, but
different, kind of joy that only bicycles can provide. I thought I'd
contribute as well. It's also my small way of saying thanks for your
 support, intentional or not.

I've organized rides of remembrance on the day he died, and I rode his
Hilsen in both cases. This year, a friend of mine borrowed my QB for the
memorial ride so two Rivs were well represented. :)

The ride was roughly 2 miles- it was just a slow roll through the
neighborhood to the area where Seth was killed, to where the ghost bike
was, have a moment of silence, and then through a very short trail along
Ellerbee Creek and back to the starting point. We went to a pub later. The
most amazing thing was that when we all lined up in front of the ghost
bike, traffic actually slowed down (it almost never does- it's a 35 mph but
since it leads to highways on both ends, most folks go 45-50).

I led the ride, but I am a terrible ride leader. Last year, I rode really
fast ahead of the pack and it became a joke (after years of riding the
tandem and having Seth tell me to pedal harder, it's kind of hard to break
the habit). This year a friend took me for an impromptu 14 mile ride the
day before and another friend made sure I had a few beers in before the
ride. I apparently still went too fast, and someone kind of had to chase me
down to make sure I waited for the group. And honestly, I tried to slow
down. It's not my fault Rivs are extremely efficient machines.

And I would have taken photos, except I managed to destroy my camera with
the water from the bouquet of sunflowers (Seth's favorite) that I left at
the ghost bike. So I've collected others' into this album:

 https://www.flickr.com/photos/ejchang/sets/72157655728650855

Keep riding and writing. You never know who you might reach.

Does anybody know the provenance of these bikes?

The Alex website says the manufacturer is Rivendell. But surely these are

Re: [RBW] Ram as 650 tourer, a follow up report.

2015-07-14 Thread Patrick Moore
Excellent. How does the handling feel compared to the older wheels? I mean
turn in and straight line stability.

FWIW, my erstwhile 58 cm Ram handled 35s with plenty of room for fenders,
but I shod it with Parigi Roubaix, about 30 mm wide. Open Pro
rims/Ultegra-cum-SP hubs. It rolled very well, but accelerated sluggishly
compared to my 26wheel road bikes. Very stable, but turn in was a bit slow
to my taste.

I wonder if yours is a bit quicker with the smaller wheels?

On Mon, Jul 13, 2015 at 10:55 AM, alan lavine cigar...@gmail.com wrote:

 Hola,

accelerate easily and the road feel is super comfy without being squishy.
I've been a recreational rider for over 35 yrs, but have not felt anything
like this before. This is a bike for my old agewait, whoops...already
 there.

RE the brakes: The slots on the Riv silver side pulls only required
minimal filing, I guess mine is not one with the high rear brake bridge.
Also, I changed the pads from rectangular block pads to the Koolstop
Thinlines, my favorite pads anyway. The braking surface is longer and not
quite as tall, so you gain maybe .5 mm. Still, I will be watching
 carefully as the pads wear.

My old wheels (Phil hubs 36 laced to Bontrager Fairlane asym rims, with
Compass 32's) weigh a ton in comparison. Are these known to be heavy
 wheels?

Can't speak to pedal strike yet, I don't pedal in the turns, or at least I
 won't now.

I strongly recommend this conversion if comfort is your main goal...also,
my fenders are on order. Thanks to all for the advice.

 Alan

MAIN DOWNSIDE: I may have to do this to my other road bike.

 with tan decals.

 Specs:
Frame/fork: Bike Friday 58 Pocket Rocket
 Handlebars: Bike Friday split bars
 Tape: Fizik white
 Shifters: Microshift barcon
 Brake levelrs: Cane Creek SCR-5
 Brakes: Shimano 105

 Rear derailer: Shimano 105
 Front derailer: Shimano
 Post: Thomson Elite
Cage: King Iris (1 on the bike but will include 2)
Crank: Bike Friday Select road triple

No saddle or pedals (can include a new set of grip kings for an additional
$25). This bike cost me $2300 new from Bike Friday and I added the cages,
tape, and seat post. I can guarantee you will not get a Bike Friday with
this level of components for anywhere near this price. I take very, very
good care of my bikes and you won't be disappointed. Asking $1400 shipped
 CONUS.

Email with any questions, additional pics, or serious offers.

[RBW] Re-united with Atlantis, impressed with Phil/White customer service!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8_ALLLfonWg/VaVn5BIoJRI/LUY/0d46AIGostw/s1600/_DSC4404.jpg
For the past two weeks, my wife and I have been on a motorcycle trip out
west, hiking and camping in the Canadian Rockies. Many times as my feet
started to hurt or I was trudging down an endless downhill, I was wishing
for my bike. But my Atlantis was back home in a state of disrepair - the
rear phil hub had been constantly skipping pawls for the past six months
despite several complete rebuilds by my LBS with the guidance of Phil Wood
techs. On top of that, my nearly-new White Industries road crank arms were
mysteriously coming loose on a regular basis, as if they had been
improperly installed (though I have several pairs of these crank arms and
have used square taper forever, never had any problems before, installed
according to supplied instructions).

When I got home I was so happy to see Phil Wood had sent me a brand new
hub, despite it being off warranty and despite the fact that my hub passed
every test they threw at it. It 'should' be perfectly fine they said, but I
was sent a shiny new hub anyway. Incredible!

Then I checked my email and saw that White Industries has also mailed me a
replacement pair of cranks, which should be arriving any day now. What a
day!

To celebrate I popped on a spare rear wheel and rode out to my favourite
spot to watch a huge prairie thunderstorm rolling in. It felt great to be
back on the bike and I'm excited to rebuild the rear wheel with the new
hub. Very happy with the service I received from both companies.

Thanks for the info. It's good to hear another success story. I've heard

those bikes.

I agree that back surgery should only be a last resort, and yes the first
3 months were hell, but the painkillers certainly took the edge off.

[RBW] Re: Necro-stock! A shop with a new Rambouillet frame in stock?

2015-07-14 Thread T.O.M.

The Alex website says the manufacturer is Rivendell. But surely these are
Toyo-made Rabous, right? I could be wrong, but my guess is that these bikes
went from Toyo to Alex without stopping in Walnut Creek.

Pulled it out of the box but haven't even unwrapped it yet. It's
different box than my previous NOS 54 Ram came in. This box has large
Rambouillet across the side panels, and Rivendell Rambouillet,
Oakland, Made in Japan on the end panels. I will be registering the s/n
with Riv HQ, and will be sure to ask about the Alex connection. Not worried
though, I know what a Ram looks like, this is the real deal. Aren't Alex's
Cycles and Toyo both in Osaka, Japan? If you read the Alex story,
originally they had a store front, so, maybe it's how they got there?.

that was me. i sold it complete to jordan francisco here in Bellingham
and also my AHH. Now i have a blue 54 Rambouillet and it is perfect for me

Not sure about the quote above, but if it's in reference to my original 54
Rambouillet, mine went to the east coast ~ Oct/Nov 2014...

Re: [RBW] Ram as 650 tourer, a follow up report.

2015-07-14 Thread Kieran J
I'll go ahead and be the only voice of dissent. I converted a Ram from
700x33 to 650bx42 recently, and the handling and general swiftness of the
bike suffered in my opinion. The bike was no longer effortless to
accelerate and just didn't glide nearly as well anymore. I noticed this on
hill approaches particularly, as the bike lost momentum quicker and it took
more effort to spin up.

My 650b experiments are ongoing and hardly clinical in nature, but the
exercise definitely contributed to solidifying my preference for the
700x32-38mm range. Naturally, this means relatively higher PSI and lower
cush factor but speed and agility is possibly more important to me than a
lusciously compliant ride. I think a lot of people value the cush and may
be prepared to accept a certain degree of compromise to achieve that.
Others have reported little to no loss in performance after the switch.

It's worth pointing out that I am 6'4 with bikes that can accommodate fat
700c tires well in proportion. I can certainly imagine riders of average or
small size bikes seeing the advantage in converting a 700x28 bike when
relative wheel proportions could present problems.

[RBW] Re: San Marcos vs ES

2015-07-14 Thread Evan Baird
The 650b SM has significantly more clearance than the 700c version. Not
sure how the ES compares with 650b wheels, because i never got around to
trying that, but bigger is better in my experience.

Re: [RBW] Ram as 650 tourer, a follow up report.

2015-07-14 Thread Jim Bronson
Oops didn't finish my sentence. With the 650Bx38 LoupLoup non-extralight
I'm getting between 2000-3000 on rear tires and well I've only changed my
front tire once in a year and a half plus of running these, sorta lost
track because my speedometer battery died for a couple of months before I
replaced it. But I've gotten about 11,000 Rando K's in that time as well
as some of other puttering around riding I do and a few charity rides.

As always, YMMV

Soma Weymouth on Deore hubs. Probably gained at least half a pound in
wheel weight, plus the non-Ultralight LoupLoup Pass are heavier than the
Grand Bois 700x30(32) I was running before. So in my case I have not ever
made a true apples to apples comparison with similar wheel and tire
 weights.

Besides the cush factor, the Compass LoupLoup Pass also last way longer
than the Grand Bois did, I was only getting about 750 miles out of a rear
tire on the 700x30 but with the 650Bx38. And I do love the cush.

So for me, it's worth it. YMMV.

I've got the rims and hubs to do a conversion on my Redwood also, but
first I am going to run some 700x38 Barlow Pass for a while that I picked
up for FREE() locally for a while. Sans fenders, of course, as I don't
think they'll fit. Should be interesting.

accelerate and just didn't glide nearly as well anymore.

It's worth pointing out that I am 6'4 with bikes that can accommodate
fat 700c tires well in proportion. I can certainly imagine riders of

Re: [RBW] Ram as 650 tourer, a follow up report.

2015-07-14 Thread David Banzer
I'll agree somewhat with Kieran here, in my experience with a Riv Redwood.
The bike felt best with 700x35mm tires, but I'm thrilled that I've been
able to transform it into an all-road machine, and will trade handling
(only slightly noticeable) for the ability to run 48mm tires and fenders.
Long story:
I converted my Redwood and very briefly used Hetres (actual 40-41mm) and
was glad I had room for fenders, but the handling did suffer. I took it a
step further though, installing Vee Rubber Speedsters (actual 47mm) and the
handling was improved as the wheel/tire diameter was closer to the original
700c wheel/tire diameter it was designed for. I'm crossing my fingers that
the standard casing Compass 650b x 48mm tires will be an actual 48mm width
as I should be able to fit those with fenders.

[RBW] Re: FS: Camp'n Crunch (Nitto Campee front rack)

2015-07-14 Thread Joe Bunik
A few came sniffing but, the (bent) Nitto Campee front pannier rack is
still FS... how about $125 shipped, $100 here in WC?

https://www.flickr.com/photos/joe_bunik/sets/72157653276863043

YES, the low-rider pannier panels are included, and are in perfectly
unharmed condition. This is the 650B / 26-wheel version of the rack,
with the straight-tang/forward eyelet mounting.

The fork in the pictures is a Kogswell konversion (1 threadless
version of the P/R) fork, which I removed the canti-bosses on and
Mafac Raids added. You can see that I used the short Nitto struts
(available @RBW) to mount to the mid-fork braze-ons. With the slotted
tab-mounts, the rack should be able to mate with a variety of forks.

This rack took a bullet for me when I was doored back in 2014...

Damage seems confined to the non-driveside, with the other having
remained straight/true. The left-side though deformed into something
of an hourglass condition. I spent 5 minutes tapping at it with a
set of wood blocks and began straightening it out... when I realized
that I am somewhat over this rack, regardless.

This is the 650B version with the straight dropout tangs, as opposed
to the multi-mount variation (i.e. you need a 2nd/forward brazeon at
your dropout), however I think it could play to varying degrees with
 other wheelsizes... YMMV.

The pannier mounts were NOT attached at the time and are in original
condition. Also, the underside threaded bolt (for fenders) was
removed. Struts pictured will be included.

$150 shipped or $125 picked up in Walnut Creek, CA.
