[RBW] Re: More Sam Love--and do you ride your Riv through winter?

2015-07-21 Thread Mark Reimer
I ride my Atlantis all winter long, no problems at all. I might get a touch
of surface rust here and there on a steel bolt, or bit of exposed frame
where the paint is worn off, but it is so thin it comes off easily. I
should apply a new layer of frame-saver this fall though. Don't want a
surprise hole appearing from the inside.

I believe that if you have good quality components, they should easily last
the winter. I have a Phil rear hub, SONdelux front hub, Phil BB, XT
derailleur. All those parts handled the winter no problem. And I've got a
real NASTY winter where I'm from (Winnipeg, Manitoba. Winter is six months
long, dips down to -40 for a while). I always lock my bike indoors as well,
so there are many melt/freeze cycles happening. Giving the bike a good
shake before bringing it in (or brushing the snow off with a nylon brush or
something similar) is a great idea. The riv's are real tough, don't be
afraid to get it a bit cold!

I use wool on the grip area of albatross bars, where a cork grip would go. I've
just cut a sock or surplus blanket, wrapped and taped. I put newbaums over mine

Id think a thrift store would have a host of fun wool options to mess around

work out which foot you should put down. On my intro tandem ride, we both
automatically unclipped and put our left feet down. Whew.

Standing (if you want to go there) - practice in a parking lot or other large,
empty space. First couple times it will seem a little weird. Captain and
stoker need to work out how much rocking is acceptable. Call standing when
you (captain) want to stand.

Don't scare the stoker :-)

If anyone wants to draft, they first have to tell a joke.

I have a surly LHT that I commute year round. I am on year 6 of using it.
I figure ride a bike you like, even in winter, just wipe off when it is
nasty. So far no negative consequences from the use. I figure a new bike
even being ridden in the winter should last many years. I used to work at
a bike shop and never saw a frame that rusted from inside out from winter
use. Plus in the event it was unrideable after what I would guess quite a
few winters, you would probably have reach the point of wanting a new bike
anyways.

It's a super typical nothing special build. Velocity Synergy (which I
hate-anything better?) Deore LX hubs rear der blah blah. The 9 speed
Microshift Thumbies are the best and I really like the Surly Knard tires as
jack of all trade type. Actually I really love them they are nothing
special but good at lots o things and not crazy expensive.

But alas--do you ride it through the winter? Not California winters. More
like nasty rust belt Cleveland winters with salt and brine and crap
everywhere and tons o snow. I normally just ride a different beater every
winter and junk it--but man I don't want to stop riding the Sam. I ride a
lot in the winter too so I'm usually thinking about it. I really don't care
about scratches paint chips bits o rust--can always repaint it I guess.
Just curious how you handle the really bad stuff--but not give up that

[RBW] Re: FS- AeroPress coffee maker

2015-07-21 Thread Bruce Smitham
The AeroPress is sold. Apologies to anyone I didn't get back to. I went for
a ride, responded to the first person interested then accidentally deleted
all the other emails. Someone asked if I tried the inverted method and the
answer is yes. A few of my cycling buddies showed me that as well as a
video from Riv. Liked it then but had a hard time duplicating. Thanks for
the suggestion though!

Re: [RBW] Re: tandem captain advice?

2015-07-21 Thread Eunice Chang
Thank you all for your advice. It was really helpful, especially the bit
about how the captain can hold the bike during mount/dismount.

The ride is only 11 miles and with like 100 other folks so it's not
particularly fast. You could say I would be there just to enjoy the
ride...but it does give me a good incentive to seek other tandem captains
in the future.

Interesting fact: I'm deaf, so I don't rely on voice commands or hand
signals when on a tandem - mostly I focus on the rhythm and on the streets
when it comes to stops, bumps, and turns. Most of the time I actually do
all the talking (maps, etc) especially if the captain is talking to someone
else in the group and not paying attention to the road. :)

@surlyprof I love the knards they buzz a little on the road but they really
seem to do well in almost everything. I have smart sams too on another bike-
like those as well. The knards are light enough cheap enough and tough enough
and that's good enough for me. They maybe don't corner the best but for all

curious to try the R and Roads but I'm not unhappy enough to spend the money

This is a common design defect with Rivendell bicycles. Not all models have
it, but some have it in abundance. I think it's evidence of Riv's lack of
serious concern about fenders -- which, after all, in Cali are a sometime

It's very unlikely Grant has a good reason why the fender mounting points are
superior placed the way they are on your bike. Consider that flaw as part of
your bike's personality. If you can't stand it or feel cheated by this flaw,
call Rivendell and tell them what it will take to make you happy. Very likely
they will do it.

My best guess at an explanation is that the supplier kind of goofed, and RBW
probably elected to take the shipment. They do need to keep the doors open,
after all. Rivs vendors, like many humans, are imperfect. I'm sure Riv did
its best, and will do whatever is required to make sure you like your Cheviot.

This is rad!!! Good advice so far. I presume you'll be going slow to
start, so the aero advantage of larger captain won't matter for
initial rides. As long as she can straddle the bike and hold it
steady, that's all you need. Captain hugely need to call out bumps,
shifts, coasts, and Punch it, Chewie.

We dismount to left, but that's from singles and avoiding chain
tattoos. Always start off with a Right foot up check and go.

As stoker, please keep your feet on the pedals at stops. Unless
dismounting, stoker never needs to put feet down IMHO. Nothing throws
me off more at stops or intersections... bad things can happen.
Clipless helps out a bit with that. The team will learn when to lean
together, I never found that a big problem or learning curve.

Be patient with the captain!!! Hope it turns out to be a great ride!

[RBW] Re: More Sam Love--and do you ride your Riv through winter?

2015-07-21 Thread Philip Kim
Very awesome build! Love my Sam as well. I have a pair of Dyads built from
Rich that are much better than Synergy hands down. Just a bit heavier, but
also tougher, not the box type rim. Easier to mount and seat tires.

For winter, I plan on putting on a cheap Altus and maybe studded tires. I
rode my XT RD through one winter, and had to junk it and get another.

I bought one of the last Sage Sams. Hot damn I'm glad I did. I've ridden
lots of bikes and have access to lots of cool bikes but man this one is
special. Of all the Riv's I've ridden and I've seen this is just by far my
 favorite. It's so perfectly--well I don't know--neutral. I have ridden it
every day and lots o miles in the past month. Only bike I have ridden.

Just curious how you handle the really bad stuff--but not give up that
 Magic Riv Ride.

Attached is a picture. I stink and pictures and computer stuff so I hope
 it shows up.

Re: [RBW] Re: Babyshoe Pass EL's Tubeless on Pacenti SL23's

2015-07-21 Thread Tim Gavin
If you do have removable valve cores, an oral medicine syringe (like you
get with cough syrup) works great as a sealant injector, and can be sourced
free from your local pharmacist (if you ask nicely).

I had bad luck with trying to get Pari-Motos to seal up tubeless, so now
I'm trying the sealant-in-the-tube method. No punctures yet to test the
theory.

Re: [RBW] Re: tandem captain advice?

2015-07-21 Thread Michael Hechmer
That's true Steve, but unless you're really interested in maximum speed, a
stoker stem and Albatross bars will fix most of that problem.
Eunice can worry about that later.
