Maybe I'm just an emotional wreck this week (quitting smoking, diet
changes, job change), but seeing the picture of both of you together
brought a teary tingle (no actual tear as i am a stoic and emotinally

What a great event! You can no longer be the poles of conversational

My trips up to Rampart were always afoot from the east (parking lot by the
USAFA infirmary) up that slew of a valley on that narrow trail with the
long fall on the left.

The mention of a meeting of the Patricks conjured this in the past:

Clayton your trio has stuck in my head overnight... seems like an awesome
combo and one which should really enable an amazingly wide variety of
riding while at the same time providing a distinct ride experience on each

My trio of Saluki/Bomba/XO-3 offers an extremely wide variety of riding as
well but the ride experience is less distinct given the all-rounderishness
of each. Not a good or bad thing but your trio did make me think about
that a bit. Do you have the green Chev? Those are looking pretty sweet.

ridge, climbing to 307 N. of the reservoir and took that back to the
parking area (well, I turned off a bit early since I was riding home).

[RBW] sheared off crank bolt

2015-08-06 Thread Jim Bronson
On a recent trail ride with my Redwood, I decided to stand and pedal rather
than downshift. This had the most unfortunate consequence of the crank
bolt shearing inside the bottom bracket. It also resulted in a nearly 6
mile walk back to the house.

My question is: can the rest of the bolt be extracted and the bottom
bracket re-used? Or should I just forget it and get a new bottom bracket.
It's not an expensive BB, Shimano UN-54 or similar.

2015-08-06 Thread dougP
Jim:

There is a process called electrical discharge machining which could be
used to save the BB. It's meant for things like bolts broken off in engine
blocks similar expensive things. Were it my problem, I'd just buy a new
BB. Quicker, simpler, less problem sourcing. EDM is great if you break
off a stud in your vintage sports car engine.

[RBW] FS: Poor Man's Riv ... New 58 cm Fuji Connoisseur -- Reynolds Steel, Lugged Fork, Down-Tube Shifters, etc... $495

2015-08-06 Thread Jack K
Hey Riv folks,

I have a new (as in zero miles) 58 cm Fuji Connoisseur that I'd like to
sell, at what I think is the extremely attractive price of $495. This is a
retro inspired modern bike with Reynolds steel frame, downtube shifters,
long reach brakes and other Riv-ish goodies. These sold for just shy of
$1,000 in the Performance catalog, then were reduced to $700 when I saw
them being closed out. I noticed the bare frames on closeout at Nashbar for
$400, but they are long gone now. I purchased this one at the Performance
store in Chapel Hill, NC, home of Performance. It had been used in a photo
shoot, then kicked around the warehouse for a couple of years until I
bought it late last fall. I purchased it for a friend, being far too big
for me, but his wife banned the new bike acquisition, so I'd like to get it
out of my garage. Absolutely new, never ridden, with the only known issues
a couple of minor scuffs in the paint and on the saddle corners from
kicking around the Performance warehouse.

Major features:

   - Reynolds 725 Cro-Moly butted steel tubing
   - 1 Cro-Moly steel fork with lugged crown
   - Beautiful blue paint, with mostly *silver* components -- extremely
unusual and nice for a modern bike!
   - Brakes Long reach (47-57'ish mm) Dia-Compe BRS-101
   - Brake Levers Tektro polished alloy
   - Down-tube shifters Sun-Race SLR63 (8 speed index or friction)
   - Silver Tange traditional headset
   - Crankset Fuji Alloy Forged 42/52T Chainrings
   - Bottom Bracket Sealed Cartridge Square Taper
   - Pedals Fuji Alloy Platform
   - Front Derailleur MicroShift FD-R52
   - Rear Derailleur MicroShift RD-R44S
   - Cassette Sunrace, 12-25t, 8-speed
   - Chain KMC HG-73
   - Rims Alex RDP15, Double Wall, 32-hole
   - Hubs Formula Alloy, Sealed Bearing 32-hole with quick release, 8-speed
   freehub
   - Tires Continental Ultra Sport, 700 X 23c
   - Handlebar classic bend Fuji Alloy
   - Stem Fuji Alloy 1 Threaded
   - Saddle Fuji Classic Comfort with Rivet (San Marco Regal knockoff)
   - Seat Post Fuji Micro-Adjust Alloy, 27.2, 300mm

As I said, new, but with a few minor scuffs on paint and saddle corners.
Great commute bike with braze-ons for a rack and plenty of room for chunky
tires. Priced at $495 + shipping, or can be picked up in the Raleigh, NC
area. I prefer to have the bike packed and shipped by an LBS, to minimize
hassle and risk. I called a local shop who quoted $35 for packing,
including all materials.

Someone please buy this, honestly it's a surprisingly nice bike for less
than $500!

Cheers,

-Jack

Re: [RBW] Finally done it.

2015-08-06 Thread Chris Chen
Welcome Wayne! But of course, you've always been with us anyway.

On Sun, Aug 2, 2015 at 3:34 PM, Wayne Naha w.r.n...@gmail.com wrote:

It's been a long time coming. After being in this group for I don't know
how long, I have finally become a legitimate, fully fledged member by
purchasing a lovely new Clem Smith, Jr. bicycle. I got the medium size,
and I got it in green. Partly because that was the only color left when I
ordered and mostly because that was the color I liked best. It was just
luck that the green was left, but the other colors would have been fine.
Now all the medium size Clems are sold out, so it's fortunate that I
 purchased when I did.
This bike is significant to me because it is a reward to myself, from
myself, for getting my act cleaned up. First off, it will be a year next
month that I have been following Grant's low carb diet regimen. Really, it
was Grant who got me started. I had emailed him to ask which Riv bike a
fat guy might ride and enjoy. He replied back that almost any would work,
but that if interested, he would send me a copy of Gary Taubes book Why We
Get Fat. I had my doubts that anything like a fad diet would be
helpful, but decided to at least read the book. Grant sent me the book and
I read it. I was recovering from a work related knee injury at the time
and so had plenty of time to read. Then one morning I got on our scale and
I weighed 263 lbs., ten pounds more than my 'normal' weight. That made the
decision for me. Now nearly a year later, I am at 215 lbs. Yes, I do have
more to go, but this is about the halfway point. It's all down hill from
here, right? grin And in that same year I have given up drinking and
ditched my Lexapro script (with support of Dr.). Now that last, about the
booze, might sound more dramatic than it really was. It's not like I had
to go to rehab and detox, or anything like that. I just had to make a
decision. But now I am starting what feels like a new life and it will be
 on a new bike.
It is the least of all Rivs, yes, but I think the Clem will do just fine
by me. In my view, the Clem is 90% of a Hunqapillar at 30% of the price,
so I think it is a bargain. These last few weeks will drag the longest now
until the Clems are ready for delivery, but I am very happy and grateful to
 be standing where I am.

I'm looking to get my wife a step through for a special occasion. I would

[RBW] Re: Cheviot ~ Is more than 1 bottle holder available?

2015-08-06 Thread Eric Wolforth
Well the reason I posted this question was that I really want to purchase
one for my lady friend. Touring long rides are definitely planned for
this new rig.

Is having just 1 water bottle holder a strike against a Cheviot? I honestly
have to say maybe it is. I'd like 3 water bottle mounts but 2 as a minimum.
With that said I was also looking at a LTH for her.

So maybe an additional one underneath the downtube can be added by Riv?

2015-08-06 Thread Deacon Patrick
DS, I started at 7,800 feet, peaked at about 9,500 then met Patrick at
9,200ish, and the reservoir is roughly 9,000 feet. It's got some gentle
rollers, then a steep climb away from the reservoir to more rollers on a
forest service road. This ride link shows the route we did, though we
turning off their defined route onto a FS road at 6.5ish miles (the high
point in the middle of the elevation profile). From there we followed the
ridge, climbing to 307 N. of the reservoir and took that back to the
parking area (well, I turned off a bit early since I was riding home).

I spray a little Woolite carpet cleaner and sponge off the grunge. I'm

Of course, you could replace it, but that would be throwing away thousands
 of miles of beausage. Grin.

[RBW] Re: The Silver Hubs

2015-08-06 Thread Rich Lesnik
Well, bad on me! We checked the freehub body at Riv today, and, while the
spacer and bearings are indeed steel, the freehub body itself is alloy.
Sorry. Still a great hub, though.

On Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at 8:16:03 AM UTC-7, Rich Lesnik wrote:

Another interesting characteristic of the rear hub is the location of the
pawls. Unlike most freehubs, which have the pawls on the freehub body,
these hubs have the pawls (6 sets of 2ea) located in the hub body, with the
ratchet ring on the freehub body. So the moving parts move less -- great
design. As for the steel-or-alloy freehub body, my money's on steel. I'll
check it with a magnet when I'm back there on Thursday. Oh, and yes,
definitely cartridge bearings. 4 in the rear hub.

That is exceedingly good, since their biggest problem as a business is
cashflow. Their Taiwan suppliers want their money up front. Now that
shipment 1 of the Clems is pre-sold, Riv should have the money on hand to
pay the supplier the moment the shipment is ready. That's great for them.

[RBW] Re: Cheviot ~ Is more than 1 bottle holder available?

2015-08-06 Thread Gum N Nuts
I use zefal hpx frame pumps on a 60 cm cheviot and a double-toptube 62 cm
hillborne. Picking the cheviot up by the seat tube seems the more intuitive
spot due to the top tube being lower than where I tend to grab, so the
frame pump is not an issue. For some reason, whether it be due to the
design of the cheviot's pump peg, the angle, or the fact that it's a
shorter pump, I find the frame pump on the cheviot to be the more solid of
the two.. Although they're both solid enough to forget about on offroad
rides.

I also have a lezyne mini pump for times I don't feel like having a frame
pump attached for whatever reason but I like the way the bikes look with
the frame pumps. Functionally I find them all to be similar, the zefal
takes fewer pumps to fill a tire, the lezyne screws on to the valve for a
more secure attachment while pumping. They're both nice. Like the bikes.
I'm happy to take any combination of tire pump, water storage and actual
bike out for long days on (and off) the road.

Also, one more option for water bottle holding is that two typically sized
water bottles fit side by side on a nitto rack, just bungee them down and
you're good to go.
