[RBW] Re: Rivendell Red

2015-08-24 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
I agree that Dave's AHH is a fantastic color. If I remember correctly,
that frameset was ordered with custom painting to be burnt orange and
there was some error/misunderstanding that led to the frame being painted a
color the buyer didn't want so RBW had another frame painted and Dave
snagged this one. I believe it was a Grant blug post and I believe he
referred to the color as root beer-like.Looks good, whatever they
call it.

I thought one model had a red. I think they favor the creamy shades.
I know, they tend to favor blues/greys from their recent blugs.

I want to have my 1988 Panasonic Schwinn Voyageur painted in RED, and
would like to know what if any shade Riv used in the past. I was favoring
the 1970's Schwinn Opaque Red (non-metallic).

The frame is the original Emerald Green, which is not high on
favorites. However, the paint has held up very good considering the 25
years. Schwinn was using a clearcoat at that time, which may have helped.
Keeping it indoors (garage, shed) and not in a parking lot, like a car,
 probably also helps the paint.

 TIA.

[RBW] Re: FS: Willow Chainrings Summer Sale - 25% off.

2015-08-24 Thread David Banzer
Thanks for the follow-up. I'm an 8-speed setup tops, testing out 9-speed on
a new build, so I've little experience with these chainrings myself.
I never asked compatibility questions about these chainrings when I took
over the inventory, but I'm guessing as they were made 15 years ago or so
(someone with easy access to Readers could verify this). When did 10-speed
cassettes/chain become the norm? Could be that these chainrings weren't
really made with 10-speed in mind. I've heard some reports of them working
ok, but real-world experience seems limited with these. Maybe variation
from manufacturer in actual chain width?

This is *not* a complaint. This is a follow-up from my previous post
regarding use of Willow chainrings with 10-speed drivetrains.

I finally installed my 46T and 29T chainrings that I got from David on my
10-speed bike. They replaced a 48/34 combo as I wanted lower gears.

The 29T works fine with my Ultegra 10-speed chain. The 46T, despite
appearing to mesh fine on the workstand, jumped once I was on the road
and applied a bit of force on the cranks. The chain is fairly new and
measured (with a 15 metal ruler) to have minimal wear. Upon inspection,
the width of both 29T and 46T Willow chainrings are almost 2.3 mm, whereas
the originals are closer to 2.0 mm. The 29T work fine as perhaps their
teeth are taller; the 46T's teeth are shorter, although they are the same
height as the teeth from the original chainring it replaced. I'm guessing
the extra width of the teeth prevented the narrower links on chain from
seating consistently, and increased the propensity to jump under load.
This explanation isn't satisfying as 7 through 11-speed chains should all
have an internal width of 3/32. I did find that the Surly stainless
chainrings do not like 9-speed chains although they were fine with 8-speed
 chains.

I guess I'm stuck with expensive Sugino originals.

 directly to the kickstand plate.

anyway, maybe im misreading it. maybe you are supposed to put the plate on
top and run a really long bolt through pletscher plateairkickstand
 platekickstand? seems weird to me.

more to the point, is anyone using a double leg kickstand that they really
like for touring with loads and standing up on not always super smooth/flat
 ground.

Re: [RBW] Re: Country Bike Rally in Michigan 2015

2015-08-24 Thread Marc Irwin
I got back from last week's ride along the Michigan lake shore. I will be
waiting until later in the week to make reservations for the rally on the 25th
of Sept. So far I have only received 2 confirmations in the mail. According
to the responses I've had, I expect 10-12 for the weekend. $20 each should
take of camping for the weekend, it can be sent to me by mail or through Google
wallet (it's easy and free). Here is a link to the route I have put
together:http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/813742175
It is a relatively moderate route and I checked out the roads which are in very
good condition. It's about 60% gravel with both of the climbing sections on
asphalt. Hope to see you all there.

What are your favorite small items (under $20) that Riv carries?

[RBW] FS: sorta OT, but not really: Aeropress Hario Coffee Grinder

2015-08-24 Thread David Banzer
Sorta OT, but not really as Riv sells the Aeropress.

Switched up my coffee-outside kit which doubles as my work-coffee kit, so I
have some coffee-related items to pass on.

1. Aeropress - bought from Riv awhile back, comes with about half the
original filters (which is still a LOT), the filter holder, and the
step-down funnel - $15 plus $3 shipping

2. Hario Skerton Manual Burr Grinder - a little bigger than the smaller
portable grinders, but still portable and can hold more beans without
having to empty and refill to grind for a pot of coffee, doesn't have the
little rubber anti-slip pad for the bottom, which I never used as it
doesn't really do anything - $15 plus shipping - this one is about a pound
- so figure $5.35 for Priority mail

Can fit both items together for $5.35 shipping cost.
Paypal Personal payment please.
Thanks,
David

Re: [RBW] Re: Found a 1986–87 Bridgestone T700 at the Curb This Morning, Am Puzzled

2015-08-24 Thread Robert Bolesta
Thanks for the comments, everyone!

I decided that I'm going to build this up as my commuter/light tourer,
replacing my current too-small-for-me Bridgestone 450 of the same year, or
possibly the year after. I've been riding the 450 to 5 miles work every day
for almost 8 years, and I even toured with it a few times, in a kind of
janky, not-ideal but who cares kind of way. I love the bike, but luckily
this T700 I found for free is just my size so I'm replacing it.

The only difference between the two frames is that the 450 has less tire
clearance and recessed brake nuts. A couple of years ago I did a 650b
conversion on it which allowed me to get fenders plus 32mm Nifty Swifty's.
I haven't tried Col de la Vie's but I have a feeling they'd just barely
fit. But when on the T700 I found, I'll be able to put Schwalbe Marathons
on these wheels, something I'm super excited about.

Other than the wheelset I'll be migrating my Bosco bars, shimano levers,
Sun Race one-at-a-time shifters and my compact Tubus Fly rear rack. The
crank was missing when I found it, so I'm adding a new Sugino x D600, and
just replaced the bottom bracket last night.

Jack B: I love your suggestion of getting a Sam Fork, but, I think I might
hold off and at some point buy a true tourer like a Hunq or an Atlantis.

I'll post pictures at some point if you all are interested.

I paid close attention on today's abbreviated (Shouldn't that word be

pull on them, both sides equally with each stroke (which obviously
alternates feet sides), and only to the point of equilibrium or less with
the downward push of the pedals, so there is no upward motion added, only
leverage against the pedals.

 10-20 miles a week.

Being carless is great. Low maintenance costs, no parking or traffic
tickets, no gas costs (unless you count the price of a burrito here and

 that's only a few times a year.

Of course if I had kids or a job that required more travel, it'd be a lot

 Happy riding.

They shouldn't be coming loose.
Are you using a chain ring tool to tighten them?
http://www.parktool.com/product/chainring-nut-wrench-cnw-2

Instead of beeswax try *removable* locktite on the threads of the bolts.
Also tighten them as you would a wheel on your car..skipping each bolt as
go around the chain ring until they are all tightened.
Hope that helps.

[RBW] Riding with Young Children: was Carless?

2015-08-24 Thread David Banzer
I'm sort of carless and rely on bicycles for transportation. My wife owns a
car, so our family is not technically carless, though I rarely use the car
on my own. I average about 10-15 miles a day in commutes, then recreational
riding throughout the week weekend.
This has been dwindling lately as we had our first child born at the end of
June, and I'll tag along in the car for errands that I normally would've
done by bike. Add in an appendicitis surgery a few weeks ago, and I've been
reliant on my wife to drop me off pick me up from work, though I should
be back on the bike this week.
My question I suppose then is:
When did you start including an infant/young child into your riding routine?
How'd you do so... specifically what equipment worked well?
How'd you convince (if you needed to) your partner that it's safe to get
young children involved in cycling?

My wife proudly joined me on commutes last year before her pregnancy. We
work at the same place so she's been comfortable riding with me along with
her the whole way. So hopefully we'll be getting family rides in as soon as
we can.

[RBW] Re: Riding with Young Children: was Carless?

2015-08-24 Thread Edwin W
Here are my thoughts:
0-1y Kids typically do not have enough neck strength to be safe in a bike
seat with a helmet on. When I had a bakfiets/box bike, I just strapped an
infant car seat into the box. In the netherlands, parents often strap an
infant seat to the back rack, perhaps with a local clasp.

Some will put an infant seat into a trailer. I never liked having my kids
at bumper level.

Once they are about a year, you can put a helmet on them (required by law
in most states I have looked at) and have them in one of the many kid bike
options. Good euro brands are kettler, yepp and bobike. The ones that sit
in front of you foster communication with the kiddo more than the ones
behind you, in my experience.

As for convincing the wife, I occasionally had trouble with that. A sure
fix is a trip to the netherlands, which I am still working on!

not work depending on application, but they were developed for 5/6/7/8-speed
drivetrains.

I probably extended it by riding too early and hard, tho' only my usual
 short distances: a couple of 20+ milers and a few 11-14 milers: feel OK;
ride; congratulate myself at getting better; get up feeling shitty the next
day; don't ride that day; repeat. And I was trying to hold back; indeed, I
did hold back, since my speeds were certainly modest. (I do *not* fret
about my averages, but I do check them.)

At any rate, I felt good enough on Friday to do a modestly hilly 21.5 1/3
dirt and 2/3 pavement on the Fargo; and yesterday felt lousy enough to
limit my ride to exactly 11.18 miles per Cyclemeter, on the gofast. Again,
I tried to hold back, but ended up at 16.16 mph overall clock running
despite an annoyingly and unusually long 4+ minute wait at the intersection
of my access road with busily traffik'd Montano.

This morning at Liturgy I felt completely wiped out and begged off from
reading the thanksgiving prayers afterward. No riding today.

I know the answer to my implied question in principle: *don't push it*,

[RBW] Carless? How many miles per day do you ride?

2015-08-24 Thread Andre Rosario
I live in the SF Bay Area and I've been carless since moving here 8 years ago.
Most of my commute mileage is covered by the BART (subway), and I only have to
ride to and from BART stations. I'd guess that I end up riding 10-20 miles a
week.

Being carless is great. Low maintenance costs, no parking or traffic tickets,
no gas costs (unless you count the price of a burrito here and there). I have a
Zipcar account for times when I absolutely need a car but that's only a few
times a year.

Of course if I had kids or a job that required more travel, it'd be a lot
harder, but if you can find a way to make it work, I highly recommend it.

Happy riding.

[RBW] Re: Riding with Young Children: was Carless?

2015-08-24 Thread 'Jay B' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi David,

I started carrying our son in a BoBike Classic Mini on the front of my
Bleriot when he was about 9 months old. This was a great setup to begin
with, and the optional windshield really made a big difference for winter
riding. When he outgrew that (at about 2 years), we transitioned to a Yepp
Maxi attached to the rear rack on my Xtracycle. I love the long bike
setup: super stable with the Kick Back 2 legged kickstand, really easy to
load kid and stuff, and it rides just like a bike.

My wife prefers pulling a Cycletote trailer behind here Betty Foy, but only
because she is less confident in her riding skills, and the trailer just
feels safer to her. For occasional use, the trailer is fine, but for
daily city riding I would recommend a Yepp or Bobike seat attached to the
bike. Long bikes (Surly Big Dummy, Xtracycle Edgerunner, Xtracycle
Freeradical attachment) are wonderful. I think the new Clem Bike with it's
long wheelbase might work great, as well, with some nice puffy tires and a
big basket up front.

best,

[RBW] Re: Local Rivendell Dealer suggestions for DELMARVA area?

2015-08-24 Thread Gravel Grind Espresso + Bikes
Hey gang,

James, Co-owner of Gravel Grind in Frederick MD here. We’re the new kids
on the Riv Dealer block. Just a quick heads up to the list about our shop
and some of things we sell. Quick once over on the shop: we only sell
steel bikes, and we generally only try to sell bikes with friction
shifting. We’re not big fans of disc brakes, and you won’t find any bikes
we’ve spec’d with them. Our main deal is taking good older steel frames
and reimagining them as something new and good. IE an old Specialized
Rockhopper into a mountain touring bike or town bike. Or an old Fuji road
bike as a 650b conversion dirt road friendly bike. We can build a new bike
for ya as well, Riv, VO, Soma, Surly, All City, New Albion... There are
lots of great dirt roads and fire roads near our shop, so make a day of
coming up, grabbing some coffee and poking around, then heading outta town
to explore some fantastic and hard riding. We’ll getcha a good cue sheet,
mileage ranging from 24 to 100...

We just built up a 58cm Sam with Albatross bars for test rides. We also
have a 56 Atlantis with the same bars, and a Hunq in a 51 and an Atlantis
in a 51 on order, ETA roughly Xmas time. They’ll be set up with dirt
drops. Currently we’re trying to stock a good amount of Riv bags, as well
as most of Frost River’s bag line (most of which are originally Riv
designs), bags from Oveja Negra (we can help with custom frame bags from
them), Brooks saddle bags and some Ostrich stuff as well. We also keep
Albatross, various dirt drops, mustache and albastash, Noodles and Bosco
bars in stock. Lots of good S24O kit in stock, we tend to go simple and
light on that stuff. Ti mugs, alcohol stoves, hammocks, small good
headlamps.

Other stuff we stock that might be of interest to this list:
-Some older Riv readers
-Grant’s two books
-Green Grips organic cotton bar tape in most colors
-Lots of Brooks saddles including a brooks lending library with a Flyer,
B67, B17 and 2 cambiums
-Full S240 rental kits as well as steel touring bikes for rent by the day
or week
-Every size of Panaracer Pasela PT imaginable, including 650b
-A small but good used travel book section
-good coffee accessories from Kalita, Chemex, Snow Peak, Hario
-Lezyne lights
-Brooks Multi Tools

More stuff of course, but that gives an idea. We have a huge list of cool
events coming up, check them out on our website, which has some but not all
of our products up.

My wife and our 2 and 5 year old love their Bike Friday Haul-a-Day. So far
they use it for going to Mass and back on Sunday. It's steeper hills and
dirt trails with some parts she's not comfortable riding to go anywhere
else (like grocery shopping), but that day may come. We will see. She uses
the car an average of 1.21498 times a week, so not bad at all, and it's
essential for going family camping/bikepacking.

recreational riding throughout the week weekend.
This has been dwindling lately as we had our first child born at the end
of June, and I'll tag along in the car for errands that I normally would've
done by bike. Add in an appendicitis surgery a few weeks ago, and I've been
reliant on my wife to drop me off pick me up from work, though I should
be back on the bike this week.
My question I suppose then is:
When did you start including an infant/young child into your riding
 routine?
How'd you do so... specifically what equipment worked well?
How'd you convince (if you needed to) your partner that it's safe to get
 young children involved in cycling?

My wife proudly joined me on commutes last year before her pregnancy. We
work at the same place so she's been comfortable riding with me along with
her the whole way. So hopefully we'll be getting family rides in as soon as
 we can.

[RBW] Riding with Young Children: was Carless?

2015-08-24 Thread Toby Whitfield
We are mostly carless, with a 2 year old and another on the way. I take my 2
year old to daycare in a back of the bike seat (Yepp Maxi). If you have your
child on daycare close to where you live, it is a nice way to ease into it. For
us, having a short and safe route probably helped with the easing into it. I
like the back seat of the bike for several reasons, although if technically
easier to do with an over 10 kg child I would like a front carrier. I don't
feel as safe with a trailer due to the low, out of sightline nature for drivers
and decreased manouverability.

I got a front rack and basket so that I can throw my stuff in there when the
kid seat is on my bike. I do wish I had a Cheviot or something with a lower top
tube for kid hauling due to lower step over, but my city bike is what it is,
and likely won't be upgraded till it dies or is stolen.

It took me a while to get comfortable with having my daughter on the bike, and
it still makes my wife nervous. I don't go everywhere that I would go myself,
but I also think about all the people who drive on expressways with their kids
in back of a car and am pretty confident we are probably less likely to be
seriously injured riding on a bike on quiet streets.

On the subject of how to do carless with kids I think it helps to live in a
place where things are close enough to be able to do what you need to do
without a lot of travel. I know this seems like a dodge on the question, but I
am surprised at how many people arrange their lives (where to live and work)
and then manage the logistics around those choices. I am lucky in that my wife
and I both work in the same vicinity, but we have also considered those
logistics in figuring out where to work, and where to live.

Daycare close to home is probably the best accessory for riding with your young
child.

The other thing that helps is to just not be a wimp about it. I have walked my
daughter in her stroller halfway across the city, in rain and shine, winter and
summer etc... It usually doesn't take as much time as people think it would,
and is a good way to get some exercise in and let your kid see the world. I
think relying on cars gives people a false sense of how difficult it is to
carry stuff and get around without them. Now that we are biking more it is the
same, though I think icy conditions might make me more nervous.

[RBW] Association of Caffeinated Wheelmen patch promo for muh birthday!

2015-08-24 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
So last Friday I celebrated my 44th with an Atlantis ramble totaling 44
miles. I had zero plan or destination, just started going. Weather was
awesome, route ended up with a little of everything. Pavement, trail, dirt,
gravel, and a refreshing creek crossing or three. Did up some coffee, sat
with my sketchbook, and just dug the day. Even took a page from the Pondero
playbook and strapped a rolled up blanket to the Baggins to make it all
picnic like. Talked with 3 different riders that stopped to ask about the
vintage bike and are you making coffee?!. Always a good day to ride,
coffeeoutside, and chat bikes. Those that don't just ride are missing out.

Pretty stoked with all the support here too, so I thought I would give away
my newest patches with orders.

steel bikes, and we generally only try to sell bikes with friction
There are
lots of great dirt roads and fire roads near our shop, so make a day of
coming up, grabbing some coffee and poking around, then heading outta town

mileage ranging from 24 to 100...

I know, they tend to favor blues/greys from their recent blugs.

I want to have my 1988 Panasonic Schwinn Voyageur painted in RED, and

Patrick,
If you get to a high torque without a chain ring wrench the nut will spin.
They are pretty inexpensive. Also make sure there is no grease on the

If you are sensitive to Loctite you can try this...have a friend or family
member put Loctite on the threads and let it dry. Then you should be able
to install them.

Eric,
Bees wax is sold and used by the good people at Rivendell to use on threads

My own 44th is coming up (2 months from today), and I think I'll have to do the
same thing.

Hmmm. Maybe I need a new coffee mug first...

I brew into a 20 Kleen Kanteen that is also my third water bottle (lowest),

I've had some interest in the rack and wanted to clarify that I'm hoping to
sell the bike first (or with). As long as the bike is in my stable I'd like
to keep the rack on there (and fenders around) if I'm going to use it. Will
update the thread accordingly if the bike sells and the rack and fenders
are still available. Thanks for the interest!
