Re: [RBW] Re: (Not OT) carrying a camera on a bike

2015-08-25 Thread René Sterental
I have tried different ways to carry a camera and lenses on my bike, and so
far have settled on the following preferred ways:
- An f-stop ICU (internal camera unit) that easily fits inside whatever bag
I happen to carry on my front basket. Particularly well suited for the
medium Sackville Shopsack. I use it primarily to carry a Leica with a lens
attached and a spare lens. It also fits a larger DSLR with a zoom lens. I
haven't yet tried fitting it on an Acorn Rando Bag, but I think it should
fit well inside; will verify and report.
http://shop.fstopgear.com/us/product/icu/small-pro-icu.html
It seems to be out of stock now, but available on Amazon for a higher
price, not sure why.
- Zimbale camera insert for a Carradice saddlebag:
http://www.ecovelo.info/2010/03/04/zimbale-leather-and-canvas-11-liter-saddle-bag/
This one is larger, but access to the camera gear requires dismounting the
bike, which is not so bad in itself, just not as practical as having the
camera gear in the front.

With any of these options, carrying the camera bandolier style when the
shooting occurs frequently is a given. Need to find a good way to prevent
the camera from falling towards the front, which is an issue with the
heavier cameras.

I could always go semi slick with the big apples, kojaks or compass type tires

I made a custom padded bag for my small Sony camera that clips onto my
handlebar bag. I sewed up a pouch that fits perfectly and used a magnetic
clasp to close it and heat molded some ABS plastic with a heat gun to
conform to the bag frame for the clip. The pouch sits inside the handlebar
bag right at the rim. The camera is suspended in cloth rather than bouncing
around with something else or banging away on a rack or basket. It works
great. I just wished the camera took better photos. I think my Iphone 6
takes better pictures, but alas, no telephoto. Sewing in three dimensions
is hard!

Re: [RBW] Re: Wheelie on 18% grade...

2015-08-25 Thread Patrick Moore
There was a road at least that steep in Gallup, NM when I lived there 20+
years ago; it went right up the side of a mesa. I recall trying to climb it
in a 42/24 wearing cleats for Sampson Stratics. (Gold star if you remember
those. The cleats had 2 vertical extensions fore and aft that fit over the
pedal, and had little surface contacting terra firma when you had to walk
in them.

I made it halfway up, then bailed, and found that my cleats gave me
absolutely no traction on the smooth asphalt. I did what any reasonable man
would do in the circumstances: I fell over. Getting up was difficult, but I
somehow made it to the top and never, ever again attempted that hill on a
bike.

In my 88 HP 1984 VW Passat wagon, it was a first gear hill.

On Tue, Aug 25, 2015 at 9:59 AM, Kyle Brooks bicycle1...@gmail.com wrote:

Here in the Akron, Ohio area, we actually have a lot of hills at 18% grade
or more -- a number of roads climbing out of the Cuyahoga River Valley are
about that steep, and some are steeper. I've never actually had a problem
with pulling an accidental wheelie on any of them, though I do recall
seeing someone do it once and come off the bike. I stand on the pedals, and
carry a lot of my weight on the front wheel.

However - we do have one road in Akron, built in the late 1800s, that is
all brick and is at 28% grade at its steepest section. It's officially
called Bates Hill but it is locally known as Cadillac Hill because
there was (still is) a Cadillac dealer located at the top of the hill, and
local legend has it that back in the old days, the salespeople would prove
the power of the Cadillac's engines by driving people up the hill. It's the
ONLY paved hill that I have not been able to ride up - and here's part of
 the complication:

The bricks are laid in such a way that the alternating rows of bricks are
raised up slightly, making almost like a miniature stairway effect
(another older local nickname for the road was Jacobs Ladder for that
reason) -- it was done like that to help provide some traction for horses,
before cars became commonplace. But that effect actually limits some of the
traction one gets with a bike tire. On the edges of the road, or the
gutter if you will, the bricks lay flat -- and while you might think that
riding on the smooth sections would be better, the old bricks are so smooth
that traction is limited there at least as bad, or worse.

I've made a few attempts to get up Cadillac Hill and here's what happened:

I tried going up the smooth section on the right side, putting weight
forward like I usually do. My rear tire just started spinning when I got to
 the steeper sections.

I tried going up the smooth section again, but keeping my weight back a
little further to help rear wheel traction. My front wheel pulled up
immediately. I leaned forward to keep the front wheel down, and the back
 wheel started spinning again.

I tried going up the ladder section in the middle. Leaning forward, the
back wheel spun. Leaning back, I pulled up the front wheel again.

I tried going up the ladder again - trying to keep my body low, with my
knees slightly more bent - and working it like a balancing act -- poised
delicately between the front and rear. If the front started to pull up, I
shifted *slightly *forward, but not too much. If the back wheel started
to slip, I shifted *slightly* back. Just trying to keep that balance. I
got pretty darn close, but again reached a point where the back wheel
started to slip, and at that point I was already going so slowly, that even
the slightest wheel slipping brought me to an immediate standstill, with me
trying unsuccessfully to get my foot out of the pedal -- and down I went,
hard, and bruising my hip on the raised bricks. OUCH!

By the way -- that ladder or stairway effect of the bricks makes going
down Cadillac Hill every bit as difficult as going up -- only much scarier.

I've heard of people saying they were able to get up the hill on bikes,
but I've never been able to do it myself, and I've never witnessed anyone
 do it.

[RBW] A very nice bike!

2015-08-25 Thread Patrick Moore
Stopped off at Stevie's today thinking I'd work, but Brad with the Orange
Ford Transit Based hobby/retirement bike repair business was there by
mistake and I let him take the day. Brad was there on his Schwinn LeTour:
very, very nice: repainted black with bronze or copper trim, small
Saddlesack, large flange Phil front hub, rear 2 sp kickback, B 17, and
Moustaches on 8 cm Nitto Dirt Drop stem. Soma 37 mm tires.

I rode it around the parking lot: a very very comfortable bike; and forgot
to take a photo. The LeTour has me reconsidering Moustache bars.

Robert! did you document the 650B conversion of the 450? I always
considered doing that but was unsure on the max tire fit (hetres?) and how
well it rode with 650B. I'm generally happy with min and 700x28, but it

 Morning, Am Puzzled

 Thanks for the comments, everyone!

I decided that I'm going to build this up as my commuter/light tourer,
replacing my current too-small-for-me Bridgestone 450 of the same year, or
possibly the year after. I've been riding the 450 to 5 miles work every day
for almost 8 years, and I even toured with it a few times, in a kind of
janky, not-ideal but who cares kind of way. I love the bike, but luckily
this T700 I found for free is just my size so I'm replacing it.

The only difference between the two frames is that the 450 has less tire
clearance and recessed brake nuts. A couple of years ago I did a 650b
conversion on it which allowed me to get fenders plus 32mm Nifty Swifty's.
I haven't tried Col de la Vie's but I have a feeling they'd just barely
fit. But when on the T700 I found, I'll be able to put Schwalbe Marathons
on these wheels, something I'm super excited about.

Other than the wheelset I'll be migrating my Bosco bars, shimano levers,
Sun Race one-at-a-time shifters and my compact Tubus Fly rear rack. The
crank was missing when I found it, so I'm adding a new Sugino x D600, and
just replaced the bottom bracket last night.

Jack B: I love your suggestion of getting a Sam Fork, but, I think I might
hold off and at some point buy a true tourer like a Hunq or an Atlantis.

I'll post pictures at some point if you all are interested.

Re: [RBW] Re: Wheelie on 18% grade...

2015-08-25 Thread Bruce Herbitter
The loop around town that we'll pedal tonight after work has a short pitch
of 20% (the middle section of a 1/2 mile or so of otherwise 9% - 12%
stuff). I can do it seated in the granny of a triple, but have to stand if
riding a double. Tonight's bike is a Road with triple. No worries. Similar
to Kyle's hill story, there is a longer section at about 25% - 27% near
Rome GA that I have tackled several times. I have to yet to make it up
without stopping (sometimes twice) to get air back in my body. One of these
days! But still, no tipping backwards.

On Tue, Aug 25, 2015 at 10:59 AM, Kyle Brooks bicycle1...@gmail.com wrote:

I've heard of people saying they were able to get up the hill on bikes,
but I've never been able to do it myself, and I've never witnessed anyone
 do it.

The only rhythm I got into was my anaerobic gasping.

2015-08-25 Thread Tony DeFilippo
As a fellow Nikon, and particularly Nikon film camera fan I'd say you almost
need to think of it as protecting the bike... And any other items you are
trying to store from your F and not the other way around. They are some solid
pieces of functional artwork!

I've used a couple bags for my slr-sized cameras while riding. Nothing purpose
made though. Generally I just wrap it in a jacket to add padding. My carradice
long flap works OK life this and the sack ville medium fits anything.

Like Ely I use a bandolier style strap even more often especially if in
actually planning to shoot much. I also use my small Nikon One system more
these days than carrying the slr.

Share some pictures you take with your F while on a bike ride soon!

[RBW] Re: Stronglight 49d on a Rivendell?

2015-08-25 Thread Peter Adler
You can also use a Phil Wood BB and adjust using cup placement (or use Phil
cups on a Shimano UN51 through UN72 BB). Or you can use an EDCO Competition
or Stronglight Delta, both of which have lockrings on both DS and NDS sides
to adjust chainline - supercool, but I've never seen a BSC-threaded one;
they must exist.

That doesn't address the underlying issue, though; you still have to select
the correct length of spindle first. The adjustment range on these various
high-zoot sealed BBs is enough to adjust chainline, but it probably won't
cover the full 4.5mm spread between a JIS spindle and an ISO spindle of the
same length. Phil Wood claims 5mm adjustment range - I call BS.

I've posted a couple of times about the differences between JIS,
traditional Campagnolo and ISO tapers. Both posts include a not-to-scale
graphic I cobbled together to give a relative picture of what segment of
the overall 2° taper angle each format uses.

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rbw-owners-bunch/VwDcbEA-WbA

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/internet-bob/wQXb29Xl9lk

In my own case, I've run French 50.4 cranksets (Stronglight 49D, TA Pro V,
Nervar 631) on several bikes, but the newest one is 40 years old. I'm
currently using a 115mm loose-ball Campagnolo BB with a Stronglight 49D
double on an early '60s French racer, and a 119mm sealed Phil Wood #3 with
a Nervar triple on a 1971 Raleigh International. Since both of the frames
are low-120 spacing without a cold set, the chainstays are pretty close to
the centerline. A frame built for a wider 126/130/135 hub will probably
have less clearance for a low-Q crank like the Stronglight.

Even so, there's often a lot more room for flexibility that the rules
imply. The taper on the 1970s Phil #3 isn't specified, but the original
tube it came in recommended it for Campagnolo (Nuovo Record/Super Record
era) triples or French doubles. I'm running a French/ISO triple crank
(26/46/50) on my Raleigh and getting about 4mm clearance, both between the
26T granny and the shell and between the chainstay and the DS crankarm. I
can't go above a 34T granny without going longer on the spindle, or the
granny will buzzsaw through my chainstay. But the low-Q is nice for my
creaky knees.

The general rule of thumb is: An ISO crank+JIS spindle will use a spindle
4.5mm shorter than the same ISO crank+ISO spindle to produce the same
chainline.

Personally, I'd eyeball the measurements using loose-ball JIS spindles,
which are available in junk bins at every bike shop/bike kitchen in the
known world. Once you've narrowed down roughly what your chainline needs to
be in order for the arms/rings to clear the chainstay safely, you can use
that number to shop around for your preferred BB. If you want ISO instead
of JIS, just add 4.5mm to the length. If you want to use old Campy (all
pre-1994 loose ball, and all late 1990s sealed BBs except Record and
Chorus, which were switched to ISO in 1994), add 2 or 3mm to the JIS length.

Sheldon's 118.5 number is for an ISO double (ISO crank+ISO spindle). A TA
ref:314 is 111.5mm (track); ref:344 is 114.5mm; ref:373 is 118mm; ref:374
is 121.5mm.
Stronglight's measurements run a little wider; if you want to go straight
to the horse's mouth, Velo-Pages has a 1958 Stronglight British-market
catalog posted. According to that sheet, the recommended spindles (all ISO)
for the 49D are 113mm single, 117/120mm double, 125.5 triple. I tried a
125mm Phil #4 at one point on that same Raleigh International with the same
triple; they made my knees scream.

Olaf, this is a nice bike with quality components. Both the frame and your
difficulty in selling it t fair price remind me of my experience with a
Trek 620. You might be better off breaking it up and selling it piece by
piece.

There are a lot of people out there who have never ridden a standard gauge
Reynolds 531 frame and don't know what a fine ride they give, but perhaps
you could connect with someone who wants the frame in a very different
setup.

In the end, I came across a good buy on a set of 650B wheels and converted
my 620 frame, along with adding SS couplers. At that time I set it up as
a go-fast travel bike but ended up liking it so much I ride it a lot on the
dirt roads of Vermont.

The bike is a 61 cm Heron Touring from Rivendell in excellent shape with
first class items. DB Reynolds 531. Geometry identical and quality same as
the Atlantis. More text and photos added.

Come on folks! This is half the price of a bare Atlantis frame!

[RBW] Re: (Not OT) carrying a camera on a bike

2015-08-25 Thread Marc40a
I had the same quandary, except that I wanted to carry both a camera *and*
binoculars.

I ended up going with the Rivendell Barsack and Nitto F-15 combo.

I didn't want a front mounted rack bag or trunk rack because of bouncing
and the potential for impact - even if I padded out the bag there would
still be the metal frame beneath it. I thought about padding a pannier, but
then it would be a pain to access and there would still be the issue of
potential impact, though less so.

I like the Barsack/F15 combo because the the bag is suspended. In the event
of a curb/pothole/obstacle the camera would only be bouncing off of the
bottom of the bag (which I've padded out with egg crate foam) as opposed to
bouncing off a rack.

[RBW] Re: Small Items to add to a RBW Order.

2015-08-25 Thread Surlyprof
I've got the mug (actually $30) and really like it. I've been eyeing the
Dutch double rack strap. I thought it might hold my u-lock so I can use my
xs saddlesack instead of the small. I have also become a big fan of the 3M
reflective tape and have been challenging myself to get as much coverage as
I can without it standing out too much during the day. I've added it to my
thin gripsters as described once in the Blug, I've got it running the
length of my SKS fenders (used a hole punch to neatly accommodate the
rivets) and I recently replaced my old, greasy chainstay protector with
custom cut protector made of reflective tape. Seemed to make sense, we'll
see how it holds up. The one other use I thought of was to use it to
infill the curly-cues of my fork lugs. If I continue it down to a point
and then add a reflective dot below, it would look like a question mark (a
backwards question mark on one side).
