[RBW] Re: Possible FS: 51cm Sam Hillborne (blue)

2015-09-01 Thread dstein
There's a lot of hillbornes for sale on the list these days! I found a
blemish on the downtube, its not deep enough of a scratch to cut through
the paint, rather a small scuff the size of a dime that just looks like
some roughed up blue paint.

$2k for complete minus saddle. Any takers?

[RBW] For Sale - 48cm Rivendell Sam Hillborne. Orange with canti posts

2015-09-01 Thread RJM

I'm selling my 48cm Sam Hillborne and figured I'd offer it up to the list
first. I was thinking I could either sell this as a frameset with the
seatpost and headset or just the complete bike. Frameset $800 shipped to
you in CONUS. complete bike for $1600

Here are the details -

48cm Orange color, Canti post, 650b wheels with original headset and
seatpost
41cm Nitto Noodle bars
7 cm Nitto Technomic stem
Silver shifter bar end shifters
Crane brass bell
Tektro brake levers for v-brakes
Shimano XT v-brakes
Shimano 6500 Ultegra front and rear derailers
Shimano 6500 Ultegra triple crankset
I'm going to keep the saddle and pedals...

Oh yeah, it has a Nitto M12 rack on it...I can send it with the bike but I
will have to take it off to fit in a bike box, I believe.

I have two wheelsets available, so I suppose I could send the bike with
either one; choice is yours.

First is a set of Velocity Dyads laced to Phil "Rivy" freewheel hubs built
by Rich at Riv. 7 speed freewheel on this set with pari moto tires (used
but not used up)
Second is a set of Velocity Synergy rims laced to Shimano LX hubs built by
Rich at Riv. I believe I have a 9 speed cassette on this set with fatty
rumpkins (used but not used up).

The frame has a few chips from use but nothing major. I've included a link
to some pictures of them. Every year I have sprayed the internals with
boeshield just as a rust prevention measure. It's solid and never been
crashed. The build is a mish mash of parts that works well together as it
is but I am happy to tear it down to just the frame so you can build it to
your liking.

I have some pictures of the bike and frame at this link...if you need more
just let me know and I will upload them.

I'm trying to get money for another, different kind of Rivendell and not
riding this one as much as I would like, so off it goes.

I can also lift my rear wheel off the ground on my CX bike with neo-retros,
though it takes some doing. I have a high straddle cable for mud clearance
and optimal straddle cable angle. The touring cant's have a lower straddle,
same brake pads on both sets. I've always found the touring canti's to stop
me much faster and have better modulation.

When it comes to the physics of it, I usually defer to this article, which
says it all much better than I can:

http://www.circleacycles.com/cantilevers/canti-geometry.pdf

And this one, for great photos of examples:
http://www.blackmtncycles.com/2013/03/get-most-out-of-your-canit-brake.html

All this does make me curious to try lowering my neo-retro straddle cable
for increased mechanical advantage. My experience mimics how the first
linked article describes a straddle cable which is too high - feels great
at the lever, but doesn't have as much stopping power as you'd hope for.
I'll try lowering it a bit and see if I can increase my stopping power.

Either way, I love Paul canti's and canti's in general. But I still affirm
that the next time I do loaded touring in the mountains and I'm coming down
at 75km/h on a 90lb bike, in the rain maybe, I want v-brakes or discs.

[RBW] Re: Purple for a Riv?

2015-09-01 Thread dougP
That was the bike she rode to last summer's Entmoot. It's a really deep,
rich color, and the creme accents really pop, as you can see from the HT.
It's tasteful without being flashy.

Many do not work well with modern road bike levers.* Certainly the
Motolites would prove touchy. Mini-Moto's and the TRP Mini-Vs do work.

*Just goofing around a few years back I paired Motolites to vintage Campy
non-aero levers which seemed to pull the Pauls just fine. Maybe an

[RBW] Re: Speak to me about front loading and rear loading

2015-09-01 Thread John Hawrylak

Is the "Soma radonneur" you refer to wrt Steve, the Grand Radonneur?? If
so, it has low trial (29 mm) while the Rivs have probably 55 to 65 mm of
trail. On the Soma GR, 70%of the weight in the front would make sense.
Bike Touring News posted this article about loading low trail (Gilles
Berthoud) and high trail (AHH) and my takeaway was low trail needs the
weight up front. They were less specific about the high trial.

Hope this helps

[RBW] Speak to me about front loading and rear loading

2015-09-01 Thread Patrick Moore
Chauncey Matthews built me a pair of nice front lowriders, and I used them
today with about 9 lb distributed across both sides. This slowed the
steering noticeably but not annoyingly; but I daresay that adding 10 more
lb a side would do something to the steering I don't like.

Steve, at the bike shop, said his rule is "70% front;" he has a Soma
randonneur.

I'm used to carrying up to 40 lb on stiff rear racks; this is not ideal,
particularly on the just-modified '03, and that is why I asked for front
lowriders, so I could distribute the loads more equitably.

My idea of good distribution is 40 lb more or less max load for this bike)
minus what feels good in back = what I put in front; and that would be ~30
rear and 10 front.

Nice Petersenian road geometry.

What do you (individually and collectively) opine on the subject?

[RBW] Both Riv's in Action Today

2015-09-01 Thread Tony DeFilippo
I've been quite pleased in the past when I manage to get on all of my ride
able bikes in a given week. Today I managed to get significant, purposeful
use out of both my Riv's and it feels even better. I'm full of admiration
for how well these bikes perform, and I feel self-affirmed in the manner in
which I've built them up. Great day for riding bikes!

Regular commute in on the Saluki with a pitstop by the Jefferson
Memorial/Tidal Basin. My sweet colored twine courtesy of Ocean Air Cycles
(thanks Rob!) needs to be tightened up a bit. I ended up doing the 14ish
mile roundtrip almost back to back after an appliance repair guy suddenly
became available and called me just as I made it into the office. Couple
emails later I turned around and biked right back home... so it was less a
commute than an unnecessarily directed early morning out-and-back.

10ish mile, 1 hour trail and singletrack ride at Wakefield Park and Lake
Accotink aboard the mighty Bombadil. Pictured here alongside Lake Accotink,
this was a fantastic, meandering ride with no particular agenda other than
to tire myself out and enjoy riding in a more natural setting. I've got an
annoying intermittant rear wheel noise going on that is driving me a bit
nuts... doesn't seem to be chain, I removed the kickstand pre-ride, and all
the spokes appear to be well tensioned. It may be tire rub but it is oddly
intermittant, usually comes when pushing hard and it sounds like metal on
frame somewhere. Can't find any new scuffs or dings either. I need to
ride with a buddy soon to try and isolate it more. Or else I'll just start
replacing parts and see...

Makes me want to do it again tomorrow... and I just might! :)

I've had mudflaps easily within 1" of the ground. Mine were flexible, so no
harm done if they grounded. That said, as long as the fender/flap keeps
spray from the bb area, it's long enough; and I've found that ~3" above the
ground works on my bikes.

Re: [RBW] Re: Speak to me about front loading and rear loading

2015-09-01 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, John. This confirms my suspicion and prejudice that on the '03 the
fronts should be used (1) only for light (sub 20 lb for both sides) loads,
and (2) for overflow from the main rear load.

I will continue to experiment.

Anecdote: a few years ago, when I owned a Sam Hill (56, single tt, cantis)
I had lowrider mounts brazed on and installed Duos. Just to try things, I
loaded my fronts with ~30 or more lb. I could barely turn the bike!

Re: [RBW] Purple for a Riv?

2015-09-01 Thread James Warren
I love purple for bikes, and while the photo is of my Bridgestone as opposed to a Rivendell, the photo shows the type of purple that I like:https://www.flickr.com/photos/46035786@N07/20883216138/in/dateposted-public/My '91 MB-4 (originally red) has a Ritchey frame but it had no Ritchey Logic fork when bought new. I beat up the paint with a lot of riding from 1991 through 1996. When I got the Ritchey Logic fork for it in 1996, I had the repaint done to be like the MB-3 of 1991; hence the deep purple. Since the only difference between those stock framesets was that MB-3 had Ritchey Logic fork, while MB-4 did not, I sometimes wonder if I could have gotten away with a new "MB-3" decal for my repainted bike, giving it a promotion. I decided to keep it" MB-4" for nostalgia purposes. It's still my best steep-climbing bike, and quite often still gets called My Favorite. The paint job was by CycleArt.

Re: [RBW] Re: Almost OT, Mini Moto vs Neo Retro

2015-09-01 Thread Michael Hechmer
Mark, as I wrote in my last post, I never dispute someones personal
experience. If you feel you are getting better braking out of the low
profile brake, stay with it.

I don't have the energy now to wade through the mathematics of the first
article you linked, but the second one clearly makes my point, the straddle
wire wants to be 90o to the brake arm, hence hi profile wants hi straddle
and low profile wants low straddle.

Disks and V brakes were originally designed for mountain bikes and although
they may work well on tandems and touring bikes, that is not their design
goal. Disks have a reputation for overheating and warping on tandems. I
have ver little experience with V brakes, but as long as they don't crowd
the fender I can't see why they wouldn't work as well as traditional
cantis. I guess what we agree on here is how well Pauls brakes work.

[RBW] Re: Next Bomba Tire

2015-09-01 Thread Garth

FWIW in addition to this , Schwalbe has a bunch of new tires for 2016.
http://www.schwalbe.com/en/tour.html
http://www.schwalbe.com/en/road.html
http://www.schwalbe.com/en/offroad.html

They are bringing back the Marathon Cross too, in 26x1.75, 650Bx42 and
700x38 .

And the Big One . 700 and 650B x 60.
http://www.schwalbe.com/en/tour-reader/schwalbe-big-one.html These appear
to be a tire to completely replace and improve upon the Super Moto model
which appears gone for 2016.

[RBW] Re: Purple for a Riv?

2015-09-01 Thread Surlyprof
I loved my old '86 Bertoni Corsa Mondiale. The color was in Italian but
the translation was "God-awful purple" (It also came in "Electric Rose").
It was a very '80's metallic lilac with blue decals that looked like this
one: http://vancouver.canadianlisted.com/ad/gallery/2788400/

I'd go a bit darker and I like the suggestion of the creme headtube. Do
they have Rodeo seat tube decals that are creme or are they white?

Re: [RBW] Purple for a Riv?

2015-09-01 Thread Tony DeFilippo
The purple-luki wasn't for me but I did grow to appreciate it as a nice color.
I hear that Bill in Ohio is enjoying it still.

A darker purple might have worked for me, I learned to ride on a dark, sparkly
purple 'ladies' Schwinn after all.

I'm happy with my dark green one and the Bombadil blue is growing on me to.

[RBW] 26 to 650b hunqapillar

2015-09-01 Thread dstein
I have a 48cm hunq that normally runs 26 x 2.1 smart sams. Had a 650b
wheelset around with babyshoe pass 650b x 42. Threw them on, adjusted the
cantilever breaks. Everything seems to fit. Bike rides fine (a little
squirrely, maybe it has something to do with tire pressure though? bar
height?).

bottom bracket (which is already high for this bike) seems to be the same
as the overall diameter is pretty close b/w the 26 x 2.1 and 650b x 42's.
Maybe a little higher.

Any reason I would not want to do this?

[RBW] Re: Speak to me about front loading and rear loading

2015-09-01 Thread dougP
Patrick:

I've played with loading quite a bit myself and have spoken with lots of
bicycle tourists. The Big Message is the number of variables is large
enough that you'll have play around with it, perhaps quite a bit.
Personally, Steve-at-the-bike-shop's recommendation is close to my
preference of 60% front. My Atlantis has a Tom Matchak fork with 40mm of
trail. Stock was I think 65mm. If I'm doing a 4 bag trip then I do try to
spread it around. But for a lodging tour with only 2 bags they can go
either end. Long trip, worth messing with, I'll put on the front rack &
carry them there. Overnighter I'll just hang 'em on the rear rack & put
with whatever tail wag it causes. No biggie. So in the 2 bag case I'm
loading 100% of the weight on one end or the other. A 2 bag lodging tour
only needs perhaps 25lbs total, and an S240 something similar.

To me, the bike is more stable / less agile with the front load. Rear is
noticeable but nothing weird. Racks are a Tubus Cosmo rear & Duo front. I
always have my little Nitto front rack & Acorn bag on the Atlantis, & have
loaded up the Acorn well in excess of Rivendell recommendations. No
worries.

Front panniers seem less affected by crosswinds but more sensitive to
ground clearance.

Re: [RBW] Re: mid-Virginia overnighter

I recall your trip Tony! You've come a long way! (and many nice bikes)

I wish I was technological enough to furnish you with files from the ride, but
alas, I still use (and enjoy) paper maps. The state sells a compete set of
county maps for $35, shipped! Where a ride may cross county lines, I make
copies, cut & paste, re-copy and mark with a highlighter. Always some
surprises, but many of those are happy ones! (Like these two old - ca. 1900 &
1912) one-lane, steel girder, wood-decked bridges on gravel road approaches in
nearby Cumberland & Amelia Counties:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/albums/72157645363078064 )

The paper maps do have a nice quality of seeing the "overall" route at once,
picking alternate roads at will and spotting dirt / gravel roads. Of course, I
know this is possible with a GPS, etc. and always enjoy having friends along
that can help back me up with route-finding.

Speaking of route-finding, have you heard of the Japanese cyclists' habit of
"pass-hunting"? Cool. This is from my good riding buddy, Meade Anderson:

[RBW] Re: Childrens' bikes

2015-09-01 Thread EGNolan
If you want to accommodate a child long term, a disc brake bike like a
Surly Straggler or Fairdale Weekender are an option. I know both of these
work well with 26" wheels through 700c & the smalls are pretty dang small.
My nearly seven year old rides a Giant Awesome 24" mountain bike, but the
Fairdale w/ 26" wheels actually has a lower standover height. The tt is a
little longer, but with the right stem & bar combo works well. 155-165
cranks and the bb height isn't all that low & now we've got a bike that is
lighter & better appointed & with a couple changes of wheels & stems should
last for several years. I was given the frame/fork or I probably would've
had a hard time swallowing the price for a kid's bike, but the Isla's
aren't terribly cheap either. Just throwing another option out there.
Smitty from the list & Jim (used to run Hiawatha) from the list have both
used Stragglers for this purpose I believe.

Best,
Eric

Re: [RBW] Re: Country Bike Rally in Michigan 2015

2015-09-01 Thread Marc Irwin
Based on the replies I have had, I reserved two campsites at Yankee Springs
for the weekend of 9/25-27. One is reserved for Sunday as well in case
anybody besides me needs to stay an extra day. There are 5 of us camping
for sure with a couple more possible. The campsites can accommodate one
more vehicle and as many as 4 more people comfortably. Several people
plan to drive in for the ride on Saturday which will start around 10AM from
the parking lot at the day use area adjacent to the campground. I'm
looking at a group of 10-15 on the Saturday ride, I'm not sure what to
expect for the Art Prize option on Sunday.
There are several small stores, restaurants and bars in the immediate
area. I am planning to cook scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast on
Saturday and Sunday mornings. Saturday night I plan to have some roasted
brisket and turkey breast for dinner. If everybody could bring a side we
could have an old fashioned potluck for dinner that night. Beer, of
course, is intertwined with bike culture and unavoidable for an event like
this.
Looks like fun!

2015-09-01 Thread 'Paul Germain' via RBW Owners Bunch

Tony,

I owe all of my "pathfinding" skills to friend, Meade Anderson, who used to put
on an annual "joint" Richmond area - No. Va. I-BOB ride around Guinea Station &
Ladysmith, off I-95. (I first met Joan Oppel and Steve Palinscar then.)

Yes, the Va. Bicycling map is nice, but does not hold a candle to Maryland.
Also, unfortunately, Va. taxpayers refuse to fund more then 6 inches of
shoulder on most roads. That's why I love these out-of-the-way country roads
with little traffic. Usually, once I'm away from areas where the "packs" of
cyclists create animosity with drivers, it can be nice. But, I do get a case of
envy when I'm in So. MD or around Frederick and find good shoulder on most
backroads.

Let me know if you're down this way sometime - or if you'd like recommendations
on more trails. There's a new one southwest of Petersburg, Va., the Tobacco
Heritage Rail Trail, that was funded with Tobacco Settlement money and has a
nice look to the infrastructure:

http://tobaccoheritagetrail.org

I could be within striking distance for you. (Could be your "Lucky Strike" -
oooh, sorry!)

2015-09-01 Thread 'Paul Germain' via RBW Owners Bunch
Your son would enjoy it Ryan! The bridge is spectacular of course, but is only
a 7-mile round trip from Farmville. The rest of the 31-mile trail is only
moderately interesting, since it does not follow a river like most rail trails
do. But, being new to that kind of thing, he won't care. The trail surface is
excellent and I prefer it to asphalt. However, there's not a lot of tree cover
like the C, etc., so fall temps would be easier for him. Not much water
providing on the outer limits, so stay hydrated.

They need to extend it both ways a few miles to take it right into Pamplin
(western end) and Burkeville (eastern end) and hopefully that will happen
someday.

Other attractions nearby are Appomattox Court House and Sailor's Creek
Battlefield Park near Rice, Va., if he's into Civil War history.

Send a picture when you get the Sam built!

[RBW] FS: '83/'84 Specialized Sequoia Frameset 60x57.5: $275

2015-09-01 Thread Paul Brodek
I'm losing my free offsite storage soon, so I need to free up some hooks
here at home. Up on the block here is an '83/'84 Specialized Sequoia
frameset, $275 shipped via BikeFlights to the lower 48. Structurally solid,
looks to have relatively low mileage but has some paint issues from
sweat/storage. I built it up and rode it briefly, it rides nicely and fits
me well, but as much as I'd like to keep the epitome of production
sport-touring design & construction, I have too much other stuff and this
puppy didn't make the cut.

I not sure how to crack the ser# code: M3D01049 I think means 4/83
production, so probably a late '83 or early '84 model-year frame. Don't
know if this was still a Miyata build. Specs are:

'83/'84 Specialized Sequoia, ser#M3D01 049 (Miyata? 4/83); Spec'l Touring
Cro-Moly tubing
ST 74.5-deg, HT 72.5-deg
ST 60.0cm c-c, 61.0cm c-t
TT: 57.5cm c-c
Chainstay: 43.0cm, wheelbase 104.5cm
BB drop 73mm; standover 86.0cm/33.8"
Rear spacing 126mm; Shimano ES horizontal drops w/single eyelets
Seatpost dia: 26.8mm
Calipers: std/long-reach, nutted

Paint overall is pretty good, but there are problem spots: spiderwebbing
below the downtube and seat tube bottle cage mounts, below the shift lever
mount and behind the front top tube brake housing guide. Should respond
well to some oxalic acid or your rust remover of choice, with some
post-treatment touchup. I removed the paint behind the top tube guide to
make sure it was just surface rust. There's also a long scrape on the seat
tube, and some chipping on the underside of the right seatstay cap (maybe
from a stand clamp? hard to figure that one...). There's also some chrome
pitting on the driveside chainstay.

Definitely good bones on this one, and if you're not super fussy it can be
built and happily ridden as is. Or make it pretty.

Coupla pix attached, more viewable at my flickr album. I do have closeups
of the paint issues, so there should be no surprises.

Happy to answer questions.

Re: [RBW] Re: mid-Virginia overnighter

2015-09-01 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Paul,

I didn't know about the VA County map option, that is awesome! I love
paper maps myself, not as handy for sharing things online but very
satisfying in the hand. I like that you do the paper print outs for your
trips. I actually did the same for my Harpers Ferry by tandem ride this
past July, not that there is alot of navigation to do once you get on the
C but I wanted to keep aware of my bailouts and what trail services were
available regardless of the condition of my phone. I'm going to order that
county set, and WOW the VDOT VA Bike map is spectacular... I'm going to
order one of those to. Talk about a perfect bucket list reminder of the
local trails. Very cool.

Those bridges are fantastic discoveries and thanks for sharing the links to
the Japanese 'pass hunters'. I was aware of the term from Bike Quarterly
but I hadn't seen an example on such a rough terrain road. That looks like
quite an adventure, and the road looks like it might be older than European
settlement in North America to! :)

We should definitely figure out an opportunity for a joint ride!

Tony
