It seems the software changed a word or 2 above. "Remove just the part that
shows" is what it should say. Yikes mobiles!

2015-09-17 Thread Garth
Thomas, on seam tags are removed the same way I described regardless of the
location, side, top or bottom. You do not need to dismantle the garment to
remove the hidden part, just debate is showing. Hence hold the tag taught and
cut close to the seam as possible. I do this all the time! No rips runs nor
errors...perfect!

I've found Gunnar paint to be very good. They got a bad rap early on with
some poor paint and that reputation has lived on in the internet ether far
beyond the reality of the quality of paint since the late oughts. Not
quite the same as Waterford but close.

[RBW] Re: Bizarrely on topic: AL absorption through skin

2015-09-17 Thread Garth
In regards to aluminum , it should be noted that all Al that is used in
everything is not the same . Some is anodized , which is a chemical
process that makes it's surface relatively inert . I say relatively only
because acids and highly caustic chemicals can compromise it. Skin contact
, cooking and such normal intended use does not at all. So all Al pots and
pans are not to be lumped together. Some are anodized , some are not .
Price is a good indicator , and of course the surface of the "raw" non
anodized ones can rub off in your hands with rubbing and in cooking in can
impart a yucky taste sometimes while anodized does not . Some bike parts
are like this too. Seatposts are almost always anodized for example. Hubs ,
especially older ones may not.

The Canfield Al pedals do appear to be anodized , for one brand example.
You can tell by the look of the surface of the colored ones.

Regardless , We are all perfectly alright , right Here Right Now,
whatever we choose . True faith is truly blind , blind to circumstance ,
to all fears, to all conditions, to anything contrary to Infinite Well
Being . Even the seemingly small mustard seed has complete faith in it's
brilliance :)

[RBW] Re: Tour Guide from RBW Headquarters to the Picnic on Sunday?

2015-09-17 Thread dstein
Hey Matt - The marin headlands ride I'm leading leaves from near the Ferry
Building by the Embarcadero BART which you'll need to pass at some point,
so if you're interested in parking in Walnut Creek (or Oakland even,
Rockridge BART is a decent place to park and only a few blocks from my
house), you can always park and then BART over to SF and join us.

If not then I can recommend some routes from Walnut Creek (or lafayette or
orinda). There will be a bit of climbing involved to get over the hill into
Oakland, at which point you can continue pedaling to an Oakland BART
station to take into SF and get off at Embarcadero and then hover along the
the Embarcadero all the way to Chrissy Field. Or alternatively you can even
ride to the ferry in Jack London Square, Oakland, which you can then take
to the Ferry Building or Fisherman's Wharf in SF (which puts you a bit
closer to Chrissy field). Or just bart from Walnut Creek all the way to
Embarcadero. Lots of options, depending on what kind or riding you're
looking for to get there. I ride these routes all the time so happy to help
plot it out if need be.

[RBW] Re: Waterford Paint

2015-09-17 Thread Ryan Fleming
I have a 1997 Waterford-built all-rounder and I think the paint job is
holding up really quite well. Obviously, it's not a Joe Bell paint job.
Now, to be fair,my AR isn't in daily hard use ... because I don't have
totally secure inside storage at work. The paint job does have a few minor
nicks and scrapes . At home, the bike is stored inside and it hasn't been
locked outside very often, so it doesn't lead a very hard life. All cleaned
up, it doesn't look like an almost 20-year old bike; it's ageing much more
gracefully than its owner, I'm afraid.

[RBW] Re: (Not OT) carrying a camera on a bike

2015-09-17 Thread Ellis Dee
I really enjoy film cameras too! The film camera that I travel with is an
old Rollei 35 from the late 60s. I had a guy make a custom leather case
for it and that has worked out great. I have carried on a bike and a
motorcycle. A compact camera is a good way to go. The lens on the Rollei
35 collapses and goes into the body, so the camera is extremely compact.

Really, if you're traveling with a camera on a bike, go for something
compact and lightweight. Lugging around a bulky SLR and a spare lens is a
bit silly. No offense meant, I just can't see why you'd want to bring
glass lenses weighing a kilo or more.

I tried traveling once with a Hasselblad 500 CM. My gawd that thing was a
beast. So heavy! The Rollei 35 is my go-to film camera for bike trips.

Cheers!

[RBW] Re: Bizarrely on topic: AL absorption through skin

2015-09-17 Thread Deacon Patrick
Thank you all! I'm not ready to search for new pedals just yet. I have
these and I have shoes and I know that combo works. We're in to cooler days
now, so it's less an issue to wear shoes (plus everything has got to seed
and dried up, and that adds barefoot fun!).

Michael, yes the most likely culprit is the surgery and accompanying shots
they gave me having metal in them (how stupid is that?). They did a CT scan
with contrasting dye rather than an ultrasound to see if my appendix needed
to come out. Why, I now have no idea as it adds time to the process and
junk into me and costs more (they wouldn't do that, would they?). But the
timing is suspect. Surgery one year ago, recovered amazingly and had one of
the best winters I've ever had in terms of brain energy, warms up and I
start riding barefoot again. Bang, weird muscle issues start up.

RJM: Volcano dirt. http://www.myinsidehealth.com also, diatomaceous earth
is a similar idea. It chelates with metals and removes them from the body.
The usual "you may feel worse before you feel better" caviates apply. In my
case, I've gotten better faster than I thought, including the ability to
write again, which has been gone since last Fall. Muscle twitching is
almost non-existant now.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Recent Blug post; no date given, but perhaps it's today's, 0915.

2015-09-17 Thread RJM
I'm okay with the "public shaming" but don't agree that it is public
shaming since nobody was named. Honestly, who in their right mind would
send a shifter in like that with a note demanding replacement? This is
clearly a failure due to weather conditions/environmental conditions and
lack of care. If I leave my bike out in the weather and the
frame/chain/bearings all rust, I don't send it back demanding replacement
because "it failed." That's just silly.

If you want your stuff to work for your entire lifetime, you must take care
of it, and that means not getting stuff sweaty/wet and then left to
rust/corrode.

Nitto Campee is not a model, it is a category. From the pictures it looks
like the $200 rack you are offering is a front rack for 700c wheels with
detachable lowriders, which would be a Nitto Campee 27F. They make the
same front rack for 650B and 26", but yours looks like the 700c model to
me. Your prospective buyer will want to know that for sure.

[RBW] Re: Tour Guide from RBW Headquarters to the Picnic on Sunday?

2015-09-17 Thread Peter Adler
The ferry from Jack London Square is likely to be a mess; the Eat Real food
festival runs from Friday through Sunday, and Jack
London will be mobbed. That festival will also soak up all the parking in
the area.

I think the OP's big point is not "where are the BART stations?", but
rather "can anyone lead us from our originating BART station in the East
Bay all the way to Crissy Field?". In my case, I'll be BARTing/biking from
the East Bay, but I'm not going to go out to Walnut Creek to do it; that's
20 miles in the opposite direction, and I tend to cut times short anyway.
I'll be using my normal technique for getting to the SF waterfront:

   1. Bike from West Berkeley to West Oakland BART on 7th Street (West
Oakland BART is the closest EB station to SF, it has a large parking lot,
and it's five flat miles from my house)
   2. Board the train; disembark at Embarcadero BART
   3. Follow the Embarcadero (the waterfront road) north and west past
Fisherman's Wharf, Aquatic Park, through Fort Mason, along Marina Green
   west into the Presidio
   4. Go all the way out to the tippy-tail west end of Crissy Field (at the
foot of the GG Bridge) near the ampitheatre and the café

The rule of thumb when riding in the City is: Stay as close as you can to
the water. The route is commonly known as the Waterfront Route; I believe
it's posted that way, too.

There are a number of walk/bike maps for Bay Area cities published by Rufus
Graphics; the SF one is called San Francisco Bike Map & Walking Guide. It's
recommended by the San Francisco Bike Coalition ,
who have a PDF available here:

San Francisco Bike Map

http://www.sfbike.org/resources/maps-routes/

SFBC provides a link to Google Maps, but suggests you compare your Google
route to the published map. They also have a link to 511's Bike Mapper,
which is in a pretty squirrely beta; it refused to generate a route map for
this trip, no matter how I modified the search terms.

The SF, Oakland and Berkeley maps are commonly available at bike stores in
the Bay Area; a Sacramento bike shop might also have them.

As for a guide: I plan to arrive at West Oakland BART somewhere around
11:30AM. The Giants are playing at AT on Sunday afternoon, so the BART
stations from Embarcadero to Civic Center are likely to be packed; it's
possible I may be on the platform at West Oakland for awile until I can get
on a train.

If someone who needs a scout wants to meet me at West Oakland BART (near
the ticket machines) or at Embarcadero 30-45 minutes later (in front of the
Ferry Building), I'll be on a dark green Raleigh w/chrome lugs, racks front
and rear, grey Ortlieb rolltops. Click the name to send an email, and I'll
send you my cell number.

Also , as Steve P. noted, try the Patrick O Brien novels - exquisite

all the nautical terminology, plus footnotes regarding late 18-19th century

[RBW] Re: Recent Blug post; no date given, but perhaps it's today's, 0915.

2015-09-17 Thread Christopher Murray
Hello,

I will agree that it isn't really public but it certainly isn't private either.
I can also accept that Grant didn't do it to shame anyone and that it would
only be considered cowardly if it was done instead of telling the customer he
didn't want to replace it and that it is an unreasonable request. The issues I
have with the whole thing are that the customer will obviously know it is them.
If it was me I would no longer be a customer of Rivendell. If Grant knows this
(and I assume he does) it doesn't make it seem like they value their customers
if they are willing to throw one away. I also have a major problem with the
assumptions made by both Grant and people on this list. Is the customer really
rich and over-privileged? A douchebag? If Grant is talking about society
instead of an individual (which was probably his intent) then I don't think it
is fair to attack the other side on a personal level. Is it personal or
societal? It isn't fair for it to be both. I am all for giving people the
benefit of the doubt and assuming the best but that has to apply to both
parties. If the customer is a bad person and greedy and flush with cash then
Grant is cowardly and acted shamefully. If the customer believed it should be
replaced and had good intentions then Grant is making a philosophical/ societal
comment.

Cheers!
Chris

A novel I read recently about race in US (and Africa) by an African

Novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
The Ibis Trilogy by Amitav Ghosh which I had been waiting for the third one
to be published and it came from the library the day I was leaving for a
two week vacation this summer--a perfect event. It takes place mainly in the
lead up to the Opium Wars between England (and it's proxy India) and China.
The first one which has an amazing sea journey which focuses on the
language of the sailors (lascars) which in itself is worth the time spent
reading it. The plot of characters and the historical fiction and
descriptions of India and Canton are icing on the cake. The first book is
called Sea of Poppies.
(I like to read about different cultures.)
As for me, right now I'm looking at a lot of photo books. Saul Leiter,
Richard Kalvar, Alex Webb.

Hi Deacon,

You should be aware that many antacids--both prescription and over the

https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a601013.html

So, if you take a teaspoon of Maalox you've just ingested more aluminum
than you would get by riding on aluminum bicycle pedals.

If you don't get a rash or break out after riding on your aluminum pedals,
then you're probably ok. However, I sympathize with your metal toxicity
issues. I have a nickel allergy and get a rash when I wear a Casio watch
made of stainless steel. (Stainless steel can be 10% nickel.) I get
around this problem by wearing a titanium watch.

You'd think there would be some slick company out there making titanium
pedals for cycling, but I haven't found any that make "normal" pedals.
There seems to be one company making the eggbeater type for special shoes,
so that won't help you.

Thus, you might just want to go for some cheap plastic ones:
https://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=42731=114

or the Ergon PC2 made of "composite material":
http://www.ergon-bike.com/us/en/product/pc2

If all else fails, here's a clever hack: Cut up an old bicycle tube and
slide it over the pedal. Then you're pedaling on rubber.

Best of luck!

If you like Steampunk novels, I just read a couple that were a lot of fun:

The Invisible Library by Genevive Cogman
Free-Wrench by Joseph Lallo

The Invisible Library is about a woman who travels to alternate universes
to collect variations of the same book. Quite an interesting concept!
Free-wrench is kind of a post-apocalyptic world, and a woman who has
adventures on airships. Apparently some nuclear disaster has covered the
world in poisonous purple fog, and everybody lives on mountain tops where
the air is clear. The only way to get anywhere is by blimp.

Both books are available for Kindle.

[RBW] Quickbeam Riding Charactertics

2015-09-17 Thread Ted Shwartz
I have one of the first run green ones. It was my commuting bike for many years
with lights, fenders, and a big honking saddlebag.

It's served duty on centuries,
club rides, fire roads, my errand bike and last winter was outfitted with
studded snow tires

After this winter she will go to the spa for a rest and resurrection paint job.
She is far too nice a riding bike

[RBW] WTB 56cm or 58 cm Sam frameset

2015-09-17 Thread Charlie1221
I don't know if this interests you, but I have a brand new 55cm blue Sam
frameset that I bought this spring that I'm looking to sell (I was going to
list it here and on Craigslist next week). I bought a proto-Appaloosa a few
weeks ago and don't need both. I know a 55 is not a 56 or a 58, but it seemed
worth checking. The frame has never been built up-- just taken out of the box
and boeshielded. Let me know!

Best,
Charlie

Hi guys,

Got several tall-boy bikes/frames up on eBay. If you reference Rivendell,

It's on the Rivendell owners page. Clayton, if you start making those basket

As the post says looking for the above saddle in black. Figured I'd see if
