[RBW] Re: On Paleo Topic: Moccasin patterns, instructions, and making tips?

2015-09-27 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, all; these look very interesting.

I may not be into the paleo diet, as understood on the list (I'm not
convinced that our "cavemen" forbears didn't eat grains and fruit and roots
and tubers), but I am into paleo gear. I suppose that's why people laugh at
me when I wear my deerskin leggings to the mall.*

Oh well.

* I'm just *kidding,* OK? Sheesh! People are so damned *serious!*

[RBW] Re: On Paleo Topic: Moccasin patterns, instructions, and making tips?

2015-09-27 Thread SC
To bring the topic around to bikes, I've found that that these REI / Wellgo
pedals work really well with
leather-soled moccasins. I used to have these
 on my bike, which
worked great for all of my other shoes, but created temporary divots in the
soles of my moccasins.

That's fine, but doesn't explain why people weren't getting responses to
private emails. We do this parts swapping/selling stuff here based on trust,
and that means communication. If there's ever a problem with a package getting
sent, the seller needs to talk to the buyer(s) right away.

[RBW] FS: Simple One 62CM frame, new in box.

2015-09-27 Thread William Wulfeck
Actually, I took it out of the Riv shipping box to take a photo. Bought it
at the end of 2011, never built it up. Includes bottom bracket, headset
with cable hanger. It's the dark green. I thought it best to leave it in
all the Riv wrapping rather than take it all off to inspect all the paint.
Don't know exactly what it's worth, don't see any for sale. How does $800
sound? Here is a photo:

[RBW] Re: Carless? How many miles per day do you ride?

2015-09-27 Thread Matt C.
I live out the outskirts of DC. My wife and I own a car, but usually only
use it on weekends. Neither of us drive to work. Sometimes my commutes is
just riding 4 miles each way to the train station. Most of the time during
March-November I ride over 20 miles each way to work. It's 75% bike paths
so it's mostly a stress free pleasant ride. Compare it to cramming into a
train, and the riding is much preferred. Sometimes I could do as little as
60 miles a week and other times 250 miles. I find that I average around
100-150 per week.

Re: [RBW] Re: Valve Stem eating Synergy Wheels

2015-09-27 Thread Edwin W
Dareck,

I've been waiting to hear of someone putting the nut on the INSIDE of the rim.
Makes sense to me, but I wasn't sure.
On closer examination, I can tell my valve hole is a bit wider than the usual
so there is more wiggle room. I redid the rim tape and cleaned everything up.
Might try the nut on the inside so the valve stem base does not get into the
hole.

[RBW] Nitto Saddlebag Uplift Support Info.

2015-09-27 Thread David Banzer
I picked up one of these from a list member and just wanted to know what
the history behind this was. I've read these were sold by Rivendell, then
looks like they were discontinued altogether, though that's about all the
info I could find.
The up angle certainly is extreme to me for a saddlebag support. Were these
mainly to keep a bag from rubbing on the rear tire? Maybe these were
featured in a Riv Reader at some point?
I may have a rainy day project of changing the bend to a more horizontal
angle.

Re: [RBW] Nitto Saddlebag Uplift Support Info.

2015-09-27 Thread Andy C.
We use one of these to mount a country bag on my girlfriend's 47 cm
Saluki. There' not enough room between the seat and the tire/rack for a
large bag, so that's where the uplift comes in. There is a lot of hardware
back there, what with a rack and the uplift, but it works. The uplift
comes our from the middle of the tombstone.

So are you going to bend it out to make it a seat-post based platform? It
was not meant to be a platform, more of a hanger to hold the bag. would
like to see how far you can bend it out as it's a pretty extreme bend as it
is.

Re: [RBW] Re: Carless? How many miles per day do you ride?

2015-09-27 Thread Peter Adler
*That* part doesn't bother/surprise me at all; I know lots of people who do
that. The Bay Area is a big area geographically (about 60 miles east -west,
about 120 miles north-south), but most people who live here don't go
everywhere all the time. They go to the places they already know. I've
lived less than 10 miles from Orinda for my entire life, and I know how to
drive east to get there both on the freeway and on surface roads; but I
routinely get lost when trying to return over the exact same surface roads.
But I could navigate around north Alameda County blind if you stuck
knitting needles in my eyes.

Berkeley is a city of 110,000 in a 3x3 mile square. San Francisco is
750,000 in a 7x7 mile square. We've got a lot of people in not a lot of
space; most of the places a parent might want to take their kids are pretty
close, and are generally bike+public transit-accessible. San Francisco has
a few steep places, but most of them have convenient access points (such as
the famous "Wiggle" running through Duboce Triangle, providing a near-level
access route from the Mission District to the Haight-Ashbury). Berkeley has
a steep rise on the eastern edge of town, with the fancy-schmancy houses
with nice bay views up on the hillsides. But there's no business up there,
and fairly few people; houses in that area now start at $1.5M for fairly
small lots. Most of us live down here in the flats, where the
businesses/schools/public buildings are. Biking around here is easy; that's
one of the reasons you see so many Xtracycles, *bakfietsen* and Big Dummys
here. Just last night, I nearly collided at the bike racks at Berkeley Bowl
West (sort of a localized Whole Foods) with a hipster dad (neckbeard, Buddy
Holly glasses, porkpie hat) who had mounted a kid-holding thingy holding a
nonplussed pacifier-sucking kid on the stem of his fixie-fied Pinarello.
Fortunately, the infink had a helmet on his melon, although his dad (the
human stereotype!) didn't.

At the beginning of the year, BART (the commuter light rail system
masquerading as a subway) liberalized the bike rules; you can now bring a
bike onto a train at any time, even during commute hours, as long as you
stay out of the first car. I haven't driven to San Francisco in three
years, although I've gone to the far corners of the City (GG Bridge, Cow
Palace, Ocean Beach, the zoo); the combination of BART and bike has gotten
me there pretty effectively. My trip to the RBW picnic last week consisted
of:

1) A 30-minute ride from my house in West Berkeley to West Oakland BART
(the closest East Bay station to SF, and one with direct SF service on
Sundays, unlike the Berkeley stations)
2) ten minutes on the train under the bay
3) a 30-minute ride along the Embarcadero and Marina waterfronts from
Embarcadero BART to Fort Point (longer than it should have been, due to
weekend tourist traffic + a craft beer festival on Marina Green)

And then the same in return. Two hours, 20 minutes transit time; when
considering the tollbooth on the bridge and parking at Crissy Field, the
time's probably a wash. Cash outlay was $6.20 for the BART ticket; not too
bad, considering the bridge toll is $5 weekends and gas is currently
slumping at $2.80/gal. Plus, the 24 miles on the bike meant I could eat
whatever I wanted that day.

What I think of as the central Bay Area, the area around the bridges (east
side of San Francisco, downtown/North Oakland, Emeryville, Berkeley/Albany)
is mostly flat. It has most of the primary federal/state government
offices, most of the museums, several of the universities. Similar setups
exist in the South Bay and on the Peninsula; most of the
people/businesses/destinations are in the flats, so it's fairly easy to
bike between them. For moments when a bike won't cut it, there's always
Uber and ZipCar, which are as common on our streets as raccoons and deer.
And of course, just because you don't have a car doesn't mean you don't
know anybody else who owns a car.

Peter Adler
normally about 6-8K miles a year on bikes, less than 1K in the car

1/2 of this shed has our tandems (2) and my most-used bikes (4) and a cargo
trailer -- the rest is garden related and wood shop storage. Projects and
my wife's single bikes are in the basement. Storage via cheap and easy
hooks and homemade scrap brackets.

For working on bikes, if the weather is good, I set up a work stand on the
patio, if, bad, in the basement.

Re: [RBW] Re: Carless? How many miles per day do you ride?

2015-09-27 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm very curious how you manage to get 2 children to school and to
extra-curricular events sans auto. I know Kent Peterson (of blog and Great
Divide and long distance fixed gear riding) did so.

I drive between 4 and 5k miles a year, of which less than 1 K is for
myself, when I need to load up at Costco or take wheels or frame or bike to
the bike shop, or haul things from Home Depot. The rest is moving my
14-year-old daughter to and from her mother's house and to and from
skating, tennis, parties, get togethers, shopping. Add another 1 K in a
rental when I take her to camp outside of Colorado Springs each year -- I
live in ABQ, NM.

ABQ of course is a typical SW city: fewer than 550K inhabitants in the
limits, but spread out over many miles. And Catie's mother delights in
scheduling events for her diagonally across town. There is no way I could
use public transportation, although, for a SW city, ABQ's is pretty good --
I think our car/car-less situation is far better than that of Phoenix, for
example.

Note that my car ('06 PT Cruiser with back seats removed) costs me in total
roughly $150/month including long-term repair bills, assuming that the car
will last another 10 years at 5K/year, or that I can sell it before hand
for a few K. (Actually, my daughter recently asked me, "Dad, can I have
your car when I turn 15?" She knows how little I drive it for myself. I may
just give it to her.)

So, how do you get your children around and about?

[RBW] Re: Carless? How many miles per day do you ride?

2015-09-27 Thread Peter Adler
I understand what you mean, but in order to ensure logical consistency:

Unless you live on the ridgeline, way out in the sticks (La Honda maybe, or
Sunol), or you have access to some invisible road system that the rest of
us Bay Area riders don't have, traffic and parking are daily issues for
*everyone* using those roads - cyclists included. You may worry about them
less than you would if you were using a car, but the issue itself doesn't
go away just because your car does. There's still hundreds of thousands of
cars out there.

This just pushed my button, because there's been a localized hurricane of
reckless careless idiot driving in Berkeley/North Oakland over the last
four days (maybe from the hot weather?), and dodging fools has really been
stressing me out. And I'm not even ferrying kids.
