[RBW] Nitto Lamp Holder No. 6 (aka Nitto Screw Mount LEFT)

2015-10-07 Thread Zach Duval
Though a recent Blug post stated a Nitto restock, I can'tell seem to find this
item, only the RIGHT side mount (I know, a very picky distinction of mine).

Before I call Riv, I wondered if any who uses this mount could testify to its
effectiveness (or if possibly there's one out there FS?), or does anyone know
of a similar option for less money?

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Kinda sorta.. maybe looking for 68 Bombadil frame only

2015-10-07 Thread Tom Harrop
Hi Kelly,

Don't have anything for sale, but I do own a 64 and a 68 Bombadil. I'm sure
you've thought about reach. I have long legs (PBH 100) but not a lot of
reach (6'4.5"). The standover on the 68 is great but the top tube is quite
long. It's *perfect* with Bosco Bullmooses (most comfortable bike I've ever
ridden) but too long for drop bars. On the other hand, on the 64 is the
perfect length for me so it works really well with normal Bullmoose bars
(the 100 mm version) as a MTB.

Have fun! What are your plans for the 68?

Tom

I have definitely considered your fender attachment (which seems really sweet),
but the rack has no fender support. Also, this year I removed my fenders over
the summer months, and will probably continue to do so, so I want a more

[RBW] Bullmoose Boscos in an Amtrak box?

2015-10-07 Thread Mitch Browne
I am taking the train from San Luis Obispo to San Diego on Monday.

I can roll a bike on board for the trip down but the return trip on Friday
may involve shipping the bike back in an Amtrak box.

I visited Amtrak today and of course the box says remove pedals, turn
handlebars and roll in box.

The beater (stealth) '87 MB-1 is fitted with Bosco Bullmoose bars. Does
anyone know if these will properly fit for Amtrak shipping?

Also, is there room to drop a fold up pannier inside without issue? I
thought I read of the box instructions that nothing else was allowed in box
but the memory is fleeting.

Thanks for collective guidance.

[RBW] Fix broken connector on Luxos U?

2015-10-07 Thread Anne Paulson
My bike got home from New Mexico just fine, except that the shop that
packed up my bike didn't detach my Luxos U from the handlebars, and
one of the little connectors, the tabs that connect the light to the
dynamo wire, got broken off. Is there a way to fix this? I don't want
to have to replace the whole expensive light just because a teeny
piece of metal is broken. Is it possible to take the light apart and
solder on a new connector?

[RBW] Atlantis or Hunqapillar

2015-10-07 Thread Çackalak
Maybe this is a question that gets asked a lot here, so apologies if that
is the case.

I am looking for a new frame to build up and these two are the finalists.
On paper, they look very similar. I have an 84cm PBH and would be sized
54cm and 58 cm for Hunqapillar and Atlantis, respectively.

Just wondering if there is an advantage with either one, given my set up
below:

* 29x2.2 tires. Probably Maxxis Ikon or Schwalbe Racing Ralphs.
* Dirt drop bars. On One Midge or ?
* Ridden mostly on dirt roads, with some singletrack mixed in. Paved roads
only to get to dirt.
* Bikepacking is a must. I think both offer everything I need for a proper
cargo set up.

Hunq is cool, but the aesthetics of the Atlantis draws me. I like more of
a level TT, and the lack of SO height doesn't bother me.

I think I am leaning Atlantis. It costs a little more, but only $300, so
not bad. Any advice either way?

[RBW] Tires for my Hunq

2015-10-07 Thread Daniel Jackson
I will ride 85% dirt roads, 15% paved with my Hunq in northern VT. No
singletrack with this machine.

The dirt roads up here I think are different than those that have
captivated the gravel grinding craze of late - here they are either hard
packed dirt, recently graded looser fine grained dirt with golf ball size
rocks, or straight up mud/ice mixture come winter. There really isn't any
of that finer grained gravel that people wax on about and for which
something like the Rat Trap was designed.

In winter, I run Schwalbe's Ice Spiker Pros, a tire I am firmly committed
to.

The rest of year, what tires should I run? Right now debating between
Thunder Burts (2.25) and Super Motos (2.35).

Thanks for the advice!

Yes. Either would be great, presuming your Hunq is the green edition with
the greater clearences. TB's give slight knobby traction which makes a big
difference on cambered dirt (packed or loose). If floatation is critical,
the SM's would be great. The Compass tires in a 700 x 2.1" on these trails
and roads and see how I do, then shift to Smart Sams for winter. Until then
it's TB's for me!

If you have a front rack with an eyelet along the front left side of the
rack, you can just directly bolt a hanging Edeluxe II there if you decide
to go with that light. No need for any brackets.

My apologies, Daniel. No. Compass does not make a 700x2.1" tire. I wish

Does the Nitto M-18 have a fender support boss? If so, and you have a
standard bottom-mount headlight, you can use a Velo Lumino headlight mount
on the fender in front of the rack:

Otherwise, you can make your own bracket for the M-18 by attaching a draw
bolt (like the ones that attach a fender to a stay) to one strut, and a
home-made bracket to the draw bolt. You can make a very sturdy bracket from
an old centerpull brake arm:

[RBW] Re: That your Quickbeam in the RAAM movie?

2015-10-07 Thread Lungimsam
Though the frame on the website pics is definitely not the same frame in the
RAAM movie (it definitely a green Qbeam in the movie), the rear red bag set up
is almost identical (red bag, bungees, to dropouts). The website pics also show
two-tone bars similar to the one in the movie, and there looks like a piece of
paper on the back of the rear bag. Maybe it's the Route 66 sign.

So unless someone is mimicking Lons rear bag and two tone bar setup, it looks
like the Quickbeam in the movie could likely be his.

[RBW] touring hub and brake lever recommendation

2015-10-07 Thread Matt Beecher
I've got an Atlantis set to hopefully arrive by the end of the month, so I
have started to order parts. I'm down to the rear hub and looking for
recommendations. I can find tons of reviews, but it is harder to find
reputable reviews within the last year or two. That said, I am curious
what the group here thinks. Clearly, Phil Wood hubs are fantastic, but
they are also a bit more than I would like to spend. I'm thinking of going
somewhere in the $250 range for the rear hub. (The front is a SON dynamo.)

I'm also in the market for a pair of brake levers. I was thinking about
the Tektro RRL, but wonder if the offset lever will conflict with the Nitto
moustache bars that I am leaning towards.

Any recommendations for the two would be appreciated. For those looking to
sell, I apologize, but I am looking to buy new from a LBS that I would like
to support.

Thanks,

Hugh,
That is a great (and reasonable) question! I'm terrible with recalling
names but I'll do my best with apologies to anyone I screw up... I'll ID
the person's bike because for some reason I do remember at least some
details about each bike even if I can't now remember a name. Which
probably doesn't speak well to my priorities. :)

Left to Right,

Chris (Pondero) - Texas dust coated light green AHH

Jeff L. (MD local) - Bright blue AHH w/ albastache

Mary (Coffeeneur, DC local) - Surly LHT

Tom A (Pudge, DE) - Black, parallel TT Bombadil w/ rolhoff

Ken P (local) - Butternut Saluki, with jingle bells!

??? - Bright blue AHH at center is this gentleman's bike but I didn't catch
his name

Tony D (me) (VA local) - Green Saluki

Steve (local) - white steel road bike, didn't get a good look at this one

Chris's Son-in-Law whose name I really should remember! (MD local) - Surly
Cross Check w/ a saddlesack LARGE

Steve? (Missouri) - Chris's friend with the purple fat tired Univega

Hilsen/Saluki's were very well represented! :) There was also an
impressive array of bike luggage given that five of the crew were camping
at least one night.

[RBW] Re: C in October

2015-10-07 Thread John G

After work yesterday I went down to Noland's Ferry and rode towards DC on
my Quickbeam to find the group, They were not at the campground yet, so I
continued for a few miles until I found them. We rode back to the camp
site and I had a nice visit while everyone set up camp. All too soon it
was getting dark and I had to head home, but it was nice to meet fellow
enthusiasts and share some time among them.

Great. Now you can truly be at peace with your decision and have a big wide
grin on your face every time you hop on that beautiful bike. Share the joy
with some pics when you get it.

That's some beautiful scenery to be riding through! And good company, too.
All in all, a great ride.

I have been so inspired reading all the wonderful replies here. They are

Though in truth, not so much more useful than any of a number of far less

[RBW] FS: brand new, never worn Ibex Indie LS cycling jersey. $75

2015-10-07 Thread Christian
Hi All,

I have a large Ibex Indie LS jersery for sale. See pic for colors. I have
several Ibex jerseys and love them all. Bought this for a reason I cannot
remember any longer but have never worn it and simply do not need it. So
new it still has the tag.

Thanks for looking,

[RBW] Re: Laid off and in a Quandary

2015-10-07 Thread Deacon Patrick
Fantastic, Wayne! 99% of being daring is being stupid enough to move
forward. Grin. I understand well the quandary, as many here do. When I
ordered my Hunqapillar all I knew is I could ride a Schwinn Chinabike 3
miles but needed time to recover upon returning (brain injury/vertigo
thing). I hadn't found this group yet, and was trusting Grant. Spending
more than our family mini-van is worth now on a bike seemed insane given we
weren't sure how far or how much I could ride. Turns out the difference for
me was stunning. I can ride as far as my body is physically able and
(usually) return doing better than when I left. I'm convinced that is part
of the reason Rivendells are such a sheer joy to ride -- they cost people
less to ride in ways most don't realize are there -- freeing them up to
enter the pure joy of the experience. It is worth sacrificing a wee bet to
help it happen.

With abandon,
Patrick
