2015-10-21 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Cecily,

My last easy bikepacking trip with my son has made me a whiny, whimpering
limper. I have talked to a couple of folks here in town that have had
knee replacements that have said, "You'll know when it is time". I will?
I have had eleven or twelve surgeries on various injuries and am burned
out on going through the processUgh. I am now in knee conservation
mode. I only ride when I have to (without a car, it's still daily). What
made you decide it was time? Your attitude is great! I am excited for you!

As an observer of the bike , with a long front-center it seems to scream
"front rack" . It would help out the weight balance overall front-rear. A
porteur would be great ! I'd chose the Soma Deluxe SS over the VO as the
Soma has the added fork struts for stabilization.

I've seen it w/o fence for as little as $132 .

As far as "the price" really ? These are one-time and long-time
purchases ,* if you get what you want first. *If you don't get what you
want, you end up dissatisfied and end up spending more later on something
else . * Get what you really want the first time *:)

I mean where do you begin? If you look up the definition of customer

approach. When the wife and I traveled to Riv Hq in 2012 he put us at ease.
When I heard Keven was leaving I had two competing emotions, complete and
utter sadness and joy that he would be closer to his family. I know that
whatever he touches in the next chapter of work will be golden because
that's the sort of guy he is. For me Rivendell will never be the same and
that shine above Riv Hq will be just a tad dimmer. All the best to you

I've never seen a Rivendell with a threaded fender boss under the fork
crown. Was this your original custom spec? Or was this part of your
subsequent mods, getting a threaded fender boss installed under the fork

In my opinion, your clearances are far too tight for anything wood. Wood
fenders are kind of thick.

[RBW] WTB: low rider rack

Hello folks

I am hoping to buy a used and affordable rack for mounting my panniers up

This would have to be a super stiff rack, something like the Tubus Tara, as

I'd be totally happy / willing to trade a Like new Paul Racer (recessed /
silver / polished), or to pay cash, or to trade other parts, if I have what
you need.

Count me as interested. My Riv fits a 650x38, and I'd love a supple tire with
file or light knobby tread.

I'm really enjoying the 700x38 Bontrager CX0 tires on my new plastic bike.

[RBW] Re: What fenders will best fit this frame?

2015-10-21 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks for the comments; I'd like to hear others.

I have a threaded boss under the crown on the bike in question, the '03
custom.

I'd rather not use separated fenders if I can avoid doing so.

Flat fenders will work well enough; I get my feet wet with Honjos, and I've
tried flat fenders on the Dahon.

Cody is sending a section of 40 mm curved fender so that I can test it;
we'll see.

If I could flare 35 mm 700C fenders to fit a 25" wheel curve, I'd be
delighted. But how does one do this? My thumbs don't work, and using levers
I dented the fenders I tried this on. Instructions?

[RBW] Marks Rack with no holes

2015-10-21 Thread Ron Mc
A BOBish bike, not a Rivendell, but Riv content is the Mark's Rack.
I was facing this, how to attach a front mini-rack to a bike built on a
cross frame with no holes of any kind - my saddle bag is full of roadside
stuff and I need a place to stuff layers this winter.

I made it work with Tubus LM-1 clamps to the top of the fork, attaching
stays to the back rod-end bolts (only Mark's rack is set up this way); the
Paul canti rack mounts, and L-brackets from McMaster for the front stays.

Came out great - rock solid.

I have a black trunk bag on order from Ely at Ruthworks, due at the end of
the month.

Have another green Sackville small trunk I move on and off another bike,
but the color does not work.

But I did determine the front bag will crop the light right in front of the
bike, so I'm going to move a light mount to the front stay on the rack

Nicely done, and should be secure. Those Tubus fork clamps are ugly, but

Re: [RBW] Marks Rack with no holes

2015-10-21 Thread Ron Mc
Thanks. Of course this bike doesn't have a brake bolt or hole on the fork
crown. I thought the Tubus clamps looked better than P-clamps, especially
on top of the fork as I used them. Where I don't like them is lower on the
mid of the fork, and with the tapped sockets wide on the outside, they bend
the stays outward.

 I
rode it this way for a few weeks until I got my hardware together for the
canti mounts.

 I
used the long stays to dropout eyelets with an M-18 on another bike several
years and it came out great.

[RBW] Re: Lifeline 100 Century Ride with a twist Report

2015-10-21 Thread Lungimsam
WETH (Erl?),

Thanks. It is a fun ride and quite picturesque in Annapolis. A Riv meetup
on the B trail and a lunch trip to Annapolis would be cool. They have a
neat market place there, though I didn't get too detailed a look. Looks
like a lot to choose from.

It is a very nice century.

Other MD centuries:
The Seagull Century(October), and Six Pillars Century (May) are two other
nice Maryland Centuries. Dead flat. Lots of fun with a party-ish atmosphere
at the start of the Seagull.

The Indian Head 100, in Southern, MD, is also nice and in the 3,000-ish
foot range, so that's another easy-ish century, similar to the Lifeline,
but more country roads. Lifeline is more a mix of downtown Annapolis and
suburban and country riding, and the 30 miles of beautiful paved MUP, with
an Emu sighting near the airport if you look carefully and it comes out to
the fence line to watch you ride by.

I haven't done the Civil War Century yet. I hear the climbing is brutal.
But the Metric route stays in the valleys and you just look at the
mountains. The Metric sounds like fun.

If you are doing any of them next year let me know.

Obviously, the item must preform it's function. But if VO's Dajia

While it does seem to be a good deal, the Soma rack linked to does not seem

[RBW] Re: Best rear support rack for med sadlesack?

2015-10-21 Thread Dave Johnston

I'd recommend skipping the mini rack and getting a light full size rack. I
am using a Tubus Vega. Its light at 500g and its rated for a 55 lb
capacity. The Nitto Mini racks are just as heavy and expensive yet rated at
less than 10lbs. A full size rack is also way more versatile and I think
they look better when not supporting anything. The Vega does not have a
tombstone which may be a plus for saddlesack support.

[RBW] Re: Visiting the E. Bay & NM

2015-10-21 Thread Surlyprof
Michael,

This may be late notice but I'm thinking of playing hookey from my work
duties for a Friday ride. If you are still seeking a ride in the bay area,
I was thinking about the Paradise Loop. Somewhere in the Berkeley hills
could be an alternative if your plan was to keep to the East Bay.

If you or anyone else is up for a Friday morning ride you can PM me to let
me know.

[RBW] Re: Big in Hong Kong...

2015-10-21 Thread Lungimsam
OK, my native Cantonese wife who is native to HK and Canton, China
listened. She said some of the words are hard to translate into English.
The audio speaker states things a little differently from the text. I typed
while my wife talked, and instead of changing retranslating her English to
sound like Native English, I just mostly typed straight out how she said
it. But the gist of it is:

*Audio from the video says:*
"He works 6 months and then goes out to play 6 months.
He has fun on 78$HK a day ($10US) because he has nothing to do and no car
and no money.
He's comes from Connecticut, USA. He's 35. His name is Benedict.
But he owns more than you and me.
He goes to play and travel - it is the real him.
He hasn't lived in one place for more than 1/2 a year since he graduated.
He works half a year and then goes to travel as a tour guide and fishing
for the next half year.
He rides bike everywhere.
Only eats simple food and yogurt or goes out to take those wild food and
berries.
If he's at the ocean he will eat some crabs and seaweed.
Every day only spends equivalent of 78$ Hong Kong money. ($10 US dollars).
All his wealth can be put in a small bag and then buries under the ground
so no one steals it.
He never counts what he has.
He has a bank account for selling bike parts online.
He has 15-20 bikes.
Simple life. He's on the magazine cover and a lot of people envy him.
He says that people in modern society think that having lots of money means
you are successful.
But he doesn't agree. He says that working is against nature and is
stressful and he doesn't like to work. He doesn't want to use the peak of
his life to work.
He doesn't want to use his time doing something meaningless.
Now he is working part time as is making work, work for him(?).".

*The print under the video says:*
"Working people every day work for two meals. Even you don't like work you
still have to do it.
Some Americans like to give up the working life and spend half year working
and the rest of the time traveling. Simple but fun life.
35 years old man Benedict is from Connecticut, River Valley, USA.
He says he doesn't like work and it is not natural. So he decided to create
his own life that belongs to himself. He said that he only likes to ride
bike and camping. He said that he would like to do something meaningful but
doesn't want to waste the peak of his life doing something meaningless.
Recently he was on the cover of a magazine. His Instagram account "Ultra
Romance" has become popular. He said he graduated at 20 years old and
hasn't stayed in the same place more than half a year, since.
1/2 year working as a travel guide or fisherman, the rest of the time
travels whole country.
Sometimes traveling alone, sometimes with company.
Last year he went adventuring and had only 14 days sleeping inside the
room. The rest of the time he stays outside.
He even with friend goes to New Zealand.
While he travels he only spends $78$HK/day. (10$ US Dollars).
He never worries about how much he has. He never counts how much he has.
That will make him nervous. He will put it in a small pocket and bury it in
the ground.".

+1 to the Tubus Vega... or the even lighter Fly. I used to have a Fly on
my old Bianchi (their smallest rack). It looked great, added negligible
weight, was very stable and, held a surprising amount of weight (more than
I should have been putting on those 23mm tires!). If I had bought the
stainless steel instead of the black, I would have had a tough time
deciding which one to mount on my Hillborne.

[RBW] Re: Keven

A couple of years ago, I had only been to Riv once and just bought a couple
of small items. Over half a year later, I went back a second time and he
remembered my name. Made a huge impression. He's the reason I ride a
Hillborne and couldn't be happier with that decision. He never forced
advice on you but would provide you with all the advice and customer
support you desired. One of the nicest and best people I've ever dealt
with in any sort of store (if you'd call Riv a store).

I wish him and his family all the best on his next venture.

The smallest bike, as shown in a recent Blog post and which I assume is a

(listed as 54-556). The larger Clems must have a different tire because
