Looks like you could drop the saddle on your husband's Clem by 7cm and still
have some seat post showing. So if your brother in law fits the Clem same as
your husband then he should be ok on the 59cm Clementine. The seat tube
shouldn't eat all the seat post. Best hurry though, sale ends today.

[RBW] Re: VO Constructeur Front Rack on a Ram - HELP

2015-12-31 Thread Michael Hechmer
Thanks to everyone for the helpful, supportive responses. I think for now
I have put aside the effort to mount this rack on this bike with these
brakes. I measured my frame and the 42cm stays from RBW should work
perfectly with Mark's Rack. The next time I have an order together I'll
buy a pair. I'll cut a wine cork and get a 35 mm bolt to join the fender
and rack. Which works better a chardoney or zinfandel cork?

I agree that if I were buying a frame or bike now I would insist on canti
brakes and a mounting point under the crown. I have one on the tandem and
it makes fenders much easier. But at 71 I think my new bike buying days
are over. I'll dance with the dolly with the holes in her stocking.

Happy New Year,
Michael

[RBW] Re: Hilsen or Atlantis

2015-12-31 Thread dougP
Erik:

If you're PBH is within the range for 2 sizes there will probably be enough
adjustment for you to get comfortable. I have a 58 cm Atlantis & according
to the charts my PBH is in the range for either 56 or 58. I've briefly
ridden a 56 and could easily make that size work. I've also ridden a 61
and felt a bit stretched out. Unless you have some unusual proportions
you'll probably be fine. The elves are pretty good at this stuff.

[RBW] Re: VO Constructeur Front Rack on a Ram - HELP

2015-12-31 Thread Lungimsam
I have had a similar experience, though the VO Rando rack worked on my Bleriot
after bending the tang over the sp brake. I adjusted for tilt by bending the
tang weld point iirc.

Racks made for sp brakes are few and involve bending tangs or using sliding
tangs and adjustable struts like the Marks. Potential failure points if you
don't stay on top of them and check for tightness periodically.

This is why any future bike I purchase I would like to be a canti brake bike so
nothing but air is between tire and fork crown for easy and direct fender and
rack-ability.

Plus I could then use a rack with all welded joints and attach directly to fork
crown and braze ons. The sp brake racks all have either a tang to bend or
adjustable pivot points which makes me a little uncomfortable about bolts
loosening with time and failing. They are not optimal front racks for this
reason in my mind. Though I do love the VO and M18 on my bikes.

Re: [RBW] Re: 25% off ANYTHING in Web Specials!!!

In some video (don't remember which) Grant talks about tax
implications of having lots of inventory. It's pretty clear that the
riv strategy is to minimize inventory at end of year in order to
combat tax issues. So, yeah, if you wanna save $$ on buying riv stuff,
wait til the end of the year. And you save even more money if they
sell out before you actually purchase. But then you don't get what you
wanted. :)

[RBW] Re: VO Constructeur Front Rack on a Ram - HELP

2015-12-31 Thread Leif Eckstrom
I'll echo what Bill says about how long it takes to mount this rack, and I
likewise found myself wishing for double eyelets, however I'm glad I
persevered since I like how it turned out and I learned a few things about
working with stainless steel and mounting racks that I'm glad to know now.

Background: I mounted this rack to a 700c 1979 Trek 930 with a Mafac
Competition centerpull brake. The clearances were tight--likely similar or
tighter than your Ram along with a similar fork rake. One possible
difference in our set-ups: I don't know how easy it is to disassemble the
PAUL centerpulls. Near the end of the project I found it useful to take off
the Mafac brake arms while keeping the brake's backing plate and brake
bolts and nuts assembled. I also didn't plan on mounting fenders with this
rack given the tight front and rear clearances. I'm thinking of converting
this bike to 650b at some point and would try fenders then.

Mounting the rack: I tried two different approaches or mounting locations.
Most online photos show folks mounting the tang to the brake bolt in front
of the crown. While the Mafac centerpulls should make this an easier
mounting choice, I found it difficult to make consecutive, tight bends in
the stainless steel tang. What happened was that I would make a strong bend
with the bench vise and try to hold other bends and angles stable with
C-Clamps, but they would inevitably lose their necessary shape and assume a
lesser angle. This didn't work well enough for me to make this a viable
option. You also need to do some rough measuring and cutting of the rack
tangs before you can begin to really get any precise idea of fit and this
tends to make you commit to a mounting point around the brake before you
really know if it's viable or not. So I eventually chose to mount the rack
as VO recommends (and as I would now recommend) with a daruma bolt under
the fork crown. The supplied VO daruma bolt was too long for me, but the
MAFAC daruma bolts that hold the brake pads to the arms worked for my
application and might work for yours too. If you mount it this way, the
factory bend is pretty accurate, but the tang is too long, so you need to
cut it before you can begin to see where you should drill a hole for the
daruma bolt to connect to the rack. Another option that I would try is to
cut off the tang altogether and use the Surly rear rack upper mounting kit.
Someone did this recently with the VO porteur rack and I was thinking you
could mount the rack to the PAUL or MAFAC brake arm bolts. See tenth photo
down:
http://www.nolifelikethislife.com/fairdaleweekender-tylerscaife-weekenderporteur/

In my case I cut the brake mounting tang shorter than would be ideal, but
it worked out in the end--thanks, no doubt, to the ease with which Mafacs
disassemble. Anyway, here are some photos and additional tips. Oh, I would
recommend getting the rack mounted before adding the fourth mounting
challenge of the fender. All of these mounting points (and a very limited
adjustability for those mounting points) make this a time-consuming
project.

Tips: use bolt cutters for cutting tangs; realize that multiple or
consecutive bends and angles on stainless steel tang are very difficult to
execute. I bought the steel Tubus rack mounting extension kit for dropout
eyelets hoping this would compensate for bad angles of bottom eyelets at
drop-outs. Didn't work for this application.
Tools used:
For bending tangs: bench vice and c-clamps and various pliers
For cutting stays and tang: bolt cutters
For drilling tang: center punch or spring loaded punch, series of drill
bits--start with smaller bits and work up to 7/32 inch or 1/4 inch bit,
deburr with circular and flat files, cobalt tipped drill bits recommended
for drilling stainless.

$3,500? I dunno -- wouldn't a similarly equipped Roadeo cost much the same?

It looks rather nice, to me, though I dislike non-aero brake levers.

Anyway, will any listers who participate please post photos?

[RBW] Re: PSA: Eroica California early registration

2015-12-31 Thread Jeremy Till
I'm signed up! The pictures from last year looked so fun that I actually
ended buying a cool old bike in need of some work specifically so I could
do it this year. Here's the machine, a Medici Pro Strada:

https://flic.kr/p/whPd9H

While I won't be riding a Riv, my resto-mod will definitely have some
riv-ish elements. I'll be replacing the bent cinelli bars + stem with a
noodle + technomic, and the cracked campy cranks with some period-correct
(if not country of origin correct) Sugino 110bcd cranks I have in the bin.
That way, I can run slightly more reasonable gearing to get this flatlander
up the hills around Paso Robles. I will probably end up selling it after
the ride; while it's an awesome old bike, I can't really afford to maintain
another bike.

A good friend will be doing it with me on his super sweet Della Santa:

Hope to see many of you there!

[RBW] Re: VO Constructeur Front Rack on a Ram - HELP

The biggest problem seems to be that as I move the rack forward the nose
sinks downward as it pivots on the dropouts. Going over the top helped me
get it level but left me too close to the brake itself.

[RBW] Re: VO Constructeur Front Rack on a Ram - HELP

2015-12-31 Thread Michael Hechmer
Hmmm, yes they did and the rack looks level, although it appears to be
angled forward as it leaves the drop out. They were also working with
canti brakes. It seems to me that there are lots of front racks built for
cantis but no really great rack for cp or sp brakes. It's too bad Grant
left mid fork braze-ons off the Ram. I know he tried to discourage people
from using the Ram as a tourer. Peter White once told me that he talked GP
into adding brazeons for the rear rack.

I just reinstalled the Mark's rack and after I get the fender bak on I'll
look into the longer stays and using the adjusting bolt. Thanks for those
ideas.

[RBW] Re: VO Constructeur Front Rack on a Ram - HELP

2015-12-31 Thread Bill Lindsay
I installed the Velo Orange Constructor front rack on a 700C bike with
metal fenders and centerpulls. Like yours, my bike had only the lower
eyelets. Like yours, my bike had not-very-much fork rake. Like you, I
cursed and complained, because it was a massive pain. Like you, I
concluded that the eyelets on top of the fork tips would be critical to get
the rack level. Since mine has a basket mounted on it all the time, I
decided that it's OK for it not to be level. If I wanted to install a rack
of that type again, I wouldn't begin unless I had the upper eyelets.

The much more expensive Nitto 20F is made to reach down to the lower
eyelets, which is nice. I have that on a different bike with centerpulls,
but you still need the mid fork braze ons for the secondary struts.

[RBW] Re: VO Constructeur Front Rack on a Ram - HELP

2015-12-31 Thread ted
Wow Michael, that sounds really aggravating.
The Ram being an older, smaller clearance model you have Racer M center
pulls not the long reach Racer ones right?
If the VO rack interferes with adjusting the brakes when the rack is flat,
seems like you have to sacrifice one or the other.
A Flea Bay sourced Mafac racer might work for you.
As Brian points out really long rack struts might let you eliminate the p
clamps with the Mark's rack, and there are ways to mount a fender to one.
You can drill a new hole through the tang mounting plate right behind the
cross bar and use a bolt spacer combination there. That might get you close
to the highest point on the fender. Using an L bracket from the front tab
is another option.

Re: [RBW] PSA: Eroica California early registration

2015-12-31 Thread masmojo
This sort of thing tears at me; on the one hand it sounds fun, but on the other
hand, do I really need another reason/excuse to ride!? Or more significantly
maintain another bike!? Might be fun for people who have some old metal hanging
are & need an excuse to air it out & reminisce with other folks who have fond
selective memories of the "good ole'd days"
Actually, I have one bike that might qualify with minimal downgrading, luckily
I don't live anywhere near enough to justify going.
Still, good luck to those who go, it will be interesting & fun regardless.

I just closed on a new house, and it will have a larger workshop in bonus
space above the garage. I haven't moved much in yet. Pros are a bigger
space, but negatives are that I have to go up stairs to get there, and I've
been told to store all the bicycle up there. Currently have a distributed
storage scheme.

Old Workshop is 9' x 7.5'

New Workshop is 23' x 12'

[RBW] VO Constructeur Front Rack on a Ram - HELP

2015-12-31 Thread Michael Hechmer
I bought shiny new fenders and this rack as upgrades for my Ram. I confess
I am a victim of "shiny things syndrome." But I have just about come to
the conclusion that this rack cannot be mounted on this bike, at least not
with my Paul's Racer M brakes and maybe not any CP brake. If you have
succeeded let me know how.

I started by trying to mount the fender and rack simultaneously, since they
need to integrate with one another. This proved impossible. I also found
that a heavy pair of pliers and small vice grip were insufficient to bend
the rack tang to a needed position. I went to plan B. I installed the
front fender, which proved remarkably easy, and then went to the hardware
store and spent $22 on a large, flat vice grip designed for metal work.
Then I removed the fenders and began again on the rack, first trying to
mount it to the daruma I had added for the fenders.

It proved very difficult to mount the tang and the dropouts simultaneously.
I concluded that there was no way I could bend the tang to clear the
brakes and get the rack level at the same time. I started over, this time
intending to come over the top of the brake and bolt it into the hole in
the fork crown. After a great deal of struggle, including drilling an extra
hole in the tang and adjusting the bend a dozen times, I finally got it all
put together, only to discover two new problems. In order to get the rack
level I was so close to the front of the brake that it was almost
impossible to get the brake between the rack and the now horseshoe shaped
tang; and the tang pinched against the front of the headset. Even if more
meticulous bending solved that problem without knocking the rack out of
level, there was precious little room to fit the 15 mm wrench and the allen
wrench necessary to adjust Paul's brakes. Probably canti brakes or thinner
CPs, like the Mafac would fit easier.

Looking again at the picture on the VO website I saw something I had
suspected from the beginning. The rack is designed to mount to an upper,
forward facing dropout not the rear downward facing style which the Ram
has. The rear position makes it much harder to get the rack level and
forward of the CP brake.

Unless someone has some reasonable solution I am about ready to reinstall
the Mark's Mini rack. That requires P clamps, which I don't like and
doesn't offer an attachment point for the front of the fender. However I
ran Honjos like this for seven years without a problem, so wouldn't expect
one with this fender either.

Would then consider selling this rack to someone who has a bike with cantis
and front dropout.

Michael

Re: [RBW] PSA: Eroica California early registration

2015-12-31 Thread Peter Adler
Or rattrap pedals with no clips/straps at all, for that matter. Pretty much
anything in the MKS Sylvan line
 should be OK; cheap, too.

The word I've gotten in the past from the course organizer is that they're
taking a generous interpretation of the rules, at least until they reach
the point that they're turning riders away. I understand that Cino Heroica
in Montana is tightening up their rules, but they've gotten up to their cap
on riders, so they can afford to pull riders who aren't honoring those
rules. I've heard similar stories from l'Eroica in Tuscany; riders starting
the course with clipped shoes/pedals, getting out of town, swapping over to
cleated shoes/pedals, getting caught by course judges and pulled off the
course. To me, that seems like a lot of effort and expense to evade the
rules of a recreational activity; if you don't agree with the rules, why do
you want to participate?

The story retold several times from the last Eroica CA was that some guy on
an AHH did the long route, at least up to the point where he was run down
by a reckless teenage driver. As I read the story, the sag wagon patched
him up, and he finished the course. If anybody knows who that guy was, it
might be worthwhile to check and see how his frameset was built up.

Of course, if someone was really interested in flouting the rules to make
some abstract ideological point, you could point to this guy

:

His ride (and attire) pretty much violate every rule on the books, but
there he is with a ride tag. I haven't confronted the course organizer
about this, because he was pretty stressed out after the weekend; playing
gotcha with a photo felt unsportsmanlike. I assume this rider was with the
Bianchi organization. And since Bianchi is an Erioca sponsor, I guess they
get to ride with whatever they happened to bring along, even if it spits in
the face of the spirit of the event. Presumably, the next Bianchi employee
who rides will be on one of Bianchi's new lugged steel "look! it meets the
Eroica rules! "
bikes or framesets
.

If you look at the Eroica CA albums linked from the ClassicRendezvous
page, you'll get an idea of the bikes
that have already been permitted to ride Eroica CA - a pretty wide range.
That's no guarantee that all such bikes will always be permitted to ride;
but until there's an officially scheduled pre-ride inspection, just showing
up brifterless with a lugged frame and platform pedals is likely to pass
muster.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hilsen or Atlantis

2015-12-31 Thread Abcyclehank
Erik,
You know exactly what the Atlantis did great and the only way to compare and
know firsthand is to give the AHH a go. Maybe the best of both will play out
and the authorities can help recover your beloved Atlantis and you will be
blessed with both.
Regardless sorry for your physical loss, but the memories will rest with you
eternally. Time for new memories and another bond to be developed.
I have both a 68cm Atlantis and a 73cm custom Nobilette that parallels an AHH.
But at 6'7" 240lbs it is hard to infer which is best for you from my point of
view.

Sincerely,
Ryan Hankinson
