More very good photos; thanks (all y'all) for posting them.

I can offer none of my own, but I can offer 2 media sets by others that
seem not too out of place:

1. Jobst's 2001 alpine tour (Jobst would have been 66 on that ride):

2. And now for something completely different: this from (I am embarrassed
to say) Jalopnik:

Re: [RBW] Re: Tip for Riv owners with slipping seatposts!

2016-01-10 Thread Keith Muller
Here is a little tidbit that people miss on their rivs regarding a slipping
seatpost. When they produce the frames, the Seat lug has a tab that
connects the slot in the lug together and keeps it from deforming when the
frame is brazed up. In the finish work before paint, they go through and
remove this material so the slot in the lug can function as intended. On
occasion when they complete this process, they don't quite remove enough
material and it can prevent the lug from clamping down correctly on the
seatpost because there is material in the slot of the lug that creates
interference. If you take a file/dremel/some device that can remover
material and clean the slot in the lug up or even make it a little wider,
you can genarally fix the problem without resorting to chemical binders. I
have done this on a few Riv frames and it has always fixed the issue.
Check out the photo I have attached that shows a raw lug. You will see
what I speak of.

[RBW] Re: Smart Sams with fenders

2016-01-10 Thread Deacon Patrick
I found it to be a noise, annoying idea, but if there is sufficient
clearance you should be fine safety wise. Yes, it will collect snow, mud,
slush much faster than riding fender and fancy free (largely because said
snow, mud, and slush is free to splash and spray you and your bike instead
of gumming up the works!). Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Smart Sams with fenders

2016-01-10 Thread Jim S.
Hi all,

I was installing Smart Sams on my fendered Atlantis. (Just wanted to try a
tire with a bit more traction for the winter ice and slush.) There's plenty
of clearance with the fenders, but my concern was whether I'm going to
hopelessly clog things if I hit any mud.

If running Smart Sams with fenders is a bad idea, will somebody please tell
me?

Thanks as always for your wisdom.

[RBW] Re: Back to the Drawing Board for Kid Bike

2016-01-10 Thread Stephen Lim
My 4 year old is on a 16" Cleary bike (clearybikes.com) and she/I have been
very happy with it. They also have 20" and 24" wheeled bikes and are a bit
cheaper than islabikes. We went with the Cleary over an Islabikes as bike
shop in Seattle (G) had them in stock and she was able to try them out.
Maybe there is one near you? Otherwise you can order them on line.

[RBW] Ten speed friction system

2016-01-10 Thread Michael Hechmer
A recent thread here on converting or mixing 10 and 11 speed systems
surprised me with the discovery of the number of participants who have
knowledge of these systems. I have to admit I have never considered a 10
speed setup and know almost nothing about them, let alone 11 speed &
electronic systems, although I have heard that the electronic systems are
now very reliable. I have recently been considering going from my current
Ram set up, (44/30 and 11-28, 9spd) back to a triple back (46/36/24 and
12-27) in order to get both a lower gear for long climbs and closer gear
spacing. I miss the 14 cog on my 11-28 cassette. However I haven't found
a crank that I really like and can afford. (Different topic that.)

That brings me to the question of whether I could at least get a lower
gear, say a 32, without the even wider spacing I don't like, by going to a
10 speed. However when I look at 10 speed cassettes I don't see any that
fill the bill. Mostly they offer smaller jumps between cogs and I wonder
how hard it is to friction shift a 10 speed. I'm assuming an 11 speed
would be quite challenging. What cassettes are people using that offer a
wide range without too wide gear jumps.

I am a very adept friction shifter but have found a few things are
necessary to make it work consistently well. One, good equipment in good
condition. Two, a rear derailler with a reasonably short cage. The
Shimano RD 6700 SS on the Ram works very well; and older Ultegra racing
triple derailler is reasonably good, an older Centaur mid length works OK.
The long cage XTR which I originally had on the tandem was awful. So...
if you are having success friction shifting 10 speed I would like to know
what derailler you are using.

Re: [RBW] Re: Eleven speeds on a ten-speed hub (It works!)

2016-01-10 Thread Kevin Lindsey
A "gear ring" is the toothed ring that, when stacked with ten others, forms
the eleven-speed cluster. I'm sure there's a more precise - or, at least,
a less redundant - word for it, but using only the word "gear" sounded
ambiguous, and "ring" non-descript, thus "gear ring."

[RBW] Re: Ten speed friction system

2016-01-10 Thread iamkeith
Looks like Garth found the cassette you want, no? A couple of other
thoughts:

- If I understand Kevin's solution from the other thread, 10 speed and 11
speed are essentially the same cog spacing, while the 11 speed cassette
driver part of the hub is simply longer than the 8/9/10 driver, to hold the
additional cog. If so, the finesse required to friction shift 11 speed
should be no different than for 10 speed. The subtext however, is that
going to 11 speed is going to require a new wheel.

- Microshift makes thumbshifters for 10 speed road AND 10 speed mountain
derailleurs, that have a friction option. Somewhere in yet another recent
thread, Bill confirmed that the road version will work on shimano bar end
pods and/or downtube bosses.

- I have a 10 speed shimano mtn group on my mountain bike, with the
mtn-specific microshift thumbshifters. These have a different cable pull
ratio (something like 1:1), while the 10 speed road group still uses the
old standard shimano 1.67:1 ratio. This is probably a different aesthetic
than you're looking for (all black), but thought I'd mention how happy I am
with it. The indexing works so well, that I've never even been tempted to
use the friction mode - which is a first for me. I don't know if the road
version is as good, but there's still the friction option - unlike with
dura ace bar ends.

Re: [RBW] Re: Paul brakes recommendation

2016-01-10 Thread dstein
Ugh. So i got a deal on some rat trap pass tires from a list member which
motivated me to put the 26" wheels back on to get a lower brake pad
position compared to the 650b wheels. I also went nuts and bought some
motolites and tektro rl520 long pull road brake levers for my albastaches.
Spent an insane amount of time yesterday (good thing it was a rainy day and
not much else to do) trying to make this work and I can only conclude that
me and brakes just don't get along, I'm going to bring this one in to a
mechanic. The brakes are either too tight and rub the rim or too loose and
the levers bottom out against the handlebar. I feel like the spring
adjustment and pad alignment for the motolites are right. But when I get
the cable tension tight enough that the levers don't bottom out, I get one
good spin on the wheels without tire rub, pull the brake lever, and then
they stick to the side of the rim, if I loosen them a tiny bit then the
levers bottom out again on the handlebars. I also stripped the cable
tension bolt :(.

Off to the bike shop. I'm also going to see if they can get some tubeless
action going for these areoheat rims and rat traps.

"gear" sounded ambiguous, and "ring" non-descript, thus "gear ring."

That is called a *sprocket, gear, cogwheel* or *cog*. The last is
ambiguous, because it generally means a single tooth but also can refer
to the entire sprocket.

[RBW] Ten speed friction system

2016-01-10 Thread islaysteve
Michael, this doesn't directly answer your question, but the 11-32 (8 speed)
cassette that Riv sells has a 14 cog. I have this cassette, I realize that you
are running a 9 speed now. Seems that a cassette like that could solve both of
your problems? I'm seriously considering customizing my cassette by
eliminating the 11 and inserting a 23 cog to get closer spacing in the low end.
I have a donor cassette for this. Just some thoughts, Steve

Your post was very timely for me, as my own knee has been acting up of

I need to check out Montano Velo, I keep hearing good things about them,
they were closed today so I went to Hank and Frank's. There's a cool
mechanic there, Benji(?), who helped correct my mistakes and setup the
brakes properly. Took it around the block and the braking power so far is
aweome. My minor brake crisis comes to an end ;)

I suspect and adjustment of the straddle wire would help. The basic
straddle carriers are wonderful as they are much more flexible in setup.
I've found any of the fixed ones are too limiting. Also, detach the
straddle cable from the brake and hold it down at the carrier with one
hand, and activate the brake with the other, it should feel smooth and
without resistance. Cables and their routing angles all play a part in this
and a resistance-free setup here is the foundation for any brake performing
 at it's best.

A higher priced brakes is no more of a gauge of quality of braking than
mid or even lower priced ones. Setup and pads are everything ! My favorite
brakes are still the 80's post style cantilever Shimano or Suntour .

[RBW] Re: OT: questions about multiple computer screens

2016-01-10 Thread Patrick Moore
Might was well add: my office is in the living room, and I want a desk or
work space that closes up and looks decent; either flip up cover or
armoire-type doors. A 36" or 40" work surface.

Any suggestions for this sort of work station?

[RBW] OT: questions about multiple computer screens

2016-01-10 Thread Patrick Moore
I probably should have answered this question long ago, but tell me, you
who work a lot on computers, particularly those of you who write: are you
more productive with 2 or even 3 screens than with 1? I assume a situation
where you refer to multiple open documents.

#2: if yes, would the advantage in your case justify the cost of 2 new
screens and a new (larger) desk? (I expect to spend at least 2-3K on a good
desk -- my present armoire desk can't accommodate more than 1 screen.)

#3: Again, if yes: what brands and models would you recommend for decent
but not necessarily top level 17" screens? This is for fancy word
processing, not graphics.

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: OT: questions about multiple computer screens

2016-01-10 Thread Deacon Patrick
I love side x side auto arrange (or whatever it is called) on my Mac. It's
great for editing or any writing where I have to reference a second
document. However, for writing, writing, I love the focus of iA Writer in
full screen, focus mode (keeps text in the bottom 1/3rd like a typewriter,
and grays out all but the sentence I'm writing. I try and use my Kindle as
my main reference when needed instead of the split screen. I also utilize
the multiple desktops and easily navigate with trackpad gestures. But a lot
of that is dependent on your OS and your working style. For me, too much
"noise" or "clutter" on the screen distracts me, but then I do 1/2 a ting
at a time, and that poorly.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: OT: questions about multiple computer screens

2016-01-10 Thread Scott G.
Two screen have been the standard since 1987 or so. Graphic interfaces
have so many dialog and control widgets that can live on a second screen
along with the source material and email clients etc.
You don't need another desk look at VESA mount arms that can hold the
screen off the desk, some can rotate the screen to a full page view.
Ergotron was the arm manufacturer favored by those spending other peoples
money.

Re: [RBW] Re: Paul brakes recommendation

2016-01-10 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
The symptoms you've described sounds like you're using cantilever levers
with Linear-pull brakes (that the Paul Motolites are, of course).
Double-confirm that the levers are truly what they purport to be? I know
that the RL520 levers will work with linear-pull brakes, as I have that a
combo with Shimano Deore V-brakes at the pointy end.
