Re: [RBW] Rivs on the Great Divide Route?

2016-02-11 Thread Anne Paulson
I have an Atlantis. Actually, I have two Atlantises. But when it came
time to do the GDMBR last summer, I opted for a Surly Krampus with
29x3 tires, and I was thankful for my choice every single day. I loved
the upright handlebars, the wide tires and the disk brakes.

However, an Atlantis would be possible. I'd suggest using the widest
tires you could fit. And IMO upright handlebars are preferable for the
Divide.

In the Canadian section, when you leave Sparwood, you can head to
Fernie on the pavement, or you can head partway up the Crowsnest Pass
and then up the dirt through the Flathead and Wigwam Valleys. I've
done some of the Fernie section, and all of the Flathead-WIgwam
section. The Flathead-Wigwam section is extraordinary; it's one of the
best sections of the whole route..

A bit more elegant than Super Glue and a ball bearing, with a price to

Even before a trailer, I found a front mount baby carrier to be a great
option, starting at year 1. Eventually moved on to rear carrier, trailer,
strider bike, Big Dummy, Burley Piccolo, and his own two wheels. He is six
now. All the systems are good at various times and for various
applications. Last Sunday we lashed his bike to the BD and headed to the
non-traffic portion of our favorite loop, which includes a wonderful trail
along the Hudson and the Fishkill Creek. Still use the Piccolo a lot, too--
will be taking the maiden voyage attached to the Clementine this weekend.

[RBW] Re: Pondering fatherhood

2016-02-11 Thread Toby Whitfield
Good luck!

My wife and I have a 2 year old and a 2 month old. Definitely busy, and
hard, but worthwhile. Less time for riding, tinkering with bikes, less
spending on bike bits etc... Especially in the newborn infant stage.
Almost all of my riding right now is commuting, and it isn't a very long
commute. On the other hand, my daughter loves going to daycare in her bike
seat, and I am sure she (and eventually my newborn son) will have fun
riding bicycles.

The first few weeks/months are about survival. Don't worry about it if you
get down about it - it gets, well, if not easier, different, and you get a
bit of yourself back. And when you get to a few weeks old, and they start
smiling back at you, the feeling makes it all worthwhile. My son, at two
months, has just started sleeping in a stretch from 9pm to 4am, which feels
like amazing progress. I know it feels brutal in the first few weeks when
they are waking up every couple of hours to eat, but that period ends!

[RBW] Re: The joys of modern lighting... we've come a long way!

2016-02-11 Thread William deRosset
>But I am a little surprised in a way that after 100+ years(?) of dyno
lighting there isn't a dragless hub yet.
>Also, dyno lights with a lens that allows you to see into a turn when
turning.

>Also, why taillights aren't built into frames yet.

Dear Lungimsam,

We don't have dragless ANYTHING. One of the laws of thermodynamics is that
you don't get something for nothing. You can't even break even.

If you're referring to lights-off conditions, a good alternator minimizes
the eddy currents and stray induction that causes those losses, and the SON
and SP hubs both lose less than 0.5w at 20mph. There are clutched systems
to decouple the alternator entirely when turned off, but they turned out to
have enough weight (and increased drag when on) to offset that tiny
benefit.

Power on, Claw-pole alternator designs can be very efficient (the SP and
SON designs are around 60%, so under 6W cost for 3W of light at speed), but
there are limits to what fits dimensionally and is pleasant to carry around
on a 20lb machine with a 1/3 HP power source (an auto alternator is more
efficient than even high-quality bike dynamos (the good ones are closer to
85% efficient if I recall correctly), but it has a large iron core, a whole
lot more windings, etc, and it neither light nor small). 6W is a
manageable workload for most of us. Note that nominal 6W output systems
were available to drive multiple lights, but never really took off for
push-bike use (they did gain a toehold in the ebike market). They require
closer to 10W to drive the additional load, and that turns out to be a lot
of power for the average cyclist relative to the additional light.

Tail lights are built into properly integrated bikes. Perhaps not into
yours, but two of my machines came with built-in tail lights, and I am
hardly alone. We as customers have not historically demanded (nor paid for)
fully-functional lighting systems for our sporting machines, and, because
it requires more design work (and complicates assembly), bike builders have
obliged by not really trying to integrate them except where required by
law. The German shopping bike design requirements support all of us in this
respect.

https://www.compasscycle.com/shop/components/lights/compass-taillight/#

Many more if you consider fenders an integral part of the complete bike.

Lower prices? Larger volume and cheaper materials (which works against
efficiency in the case of the alternator, anyway, and good design/build
quality below some threshold). I consider a $40 light, $120 hub, and $30
rear light pretty inexpensive for what you get, and, honestly, the
Velo-Lumino switch is a masterpiece of low-volume value. The comparison cost
would be a replacement light system for a motorcycle or an auto headlight.
Not just the consumable bulb(s), but an alternator, light switch, wiring
harness, control electronics, and a front and rear lens assembly. Even an
Edelux/SON/Velo-Lumino switch, sinewave USB power supply, and Secula (all
low-volume premium bits) end up costing less than than the equivalent
system parts for a Toyota truck (go ahead, price the wiring harness and
relays) or my old BMW motorcycle, and those items were mass-produced on
huge scales.

You could add another light that you can aim to the handlebars or to your
head (most of us ride with a secondary helmet-mount light offroad, for
example), but even with 90W to work with (vs the 3W or so of a bike
lighting system) most designers choose to leave the lights fixed. The
Edelux II and current-generation Cyo has a pretty broad beam and still
retains decent projection for riding at speed, and has enough side
illumination for ordinary road use (unless you block part of the beam with
the front wheel/fender/rack, as I did with the Boulder Bicycle
Allroad--left-hand mount on the Nitto rack, so low-speed right-hand
switchback turns are into a shadow.

I think Citroen had driving lights that swiveled with the front wheels.
Alternatively, you could wire a helmet-mount light into your dynamo with a
permanent plug into the bike's wiring harness. I've considered doing that
for bikepacking, but have just used battery helmet lights for that
application do date. Maybe with my next project

Best,

Assuming I used a good u-lock and sheldon brown locking method, are there
any other bits that I can/should worry about locking? I'm guessing there's
nothing to be done (nothing available) for the quill stem/handle bar.

[RBW] Re: Chainstay protector

2016-02-11 Thread George Schick
I have to agree about the stainless steel or chrome chain stay protectors.
I've often looked for one myself, but they've all but disappeared from the
bike part/accessory scene in recent years - except for those advertised
from the UK and, as you say, shipping cost would be high. There was also a
time, as far as that goes, when many high-end bikes came with the
drive-side chain stay chrome plated for this very reason. Those days, too,
seem to be long gone.

2016-02-11 Thread Matt Gilkey
Congratulations and Good luck Jim!! As a father of two sons, two and four,
and working full time while going to grad school I have to say that
becoming a parent is the single most difficult thing I have ever done. But
it is by far the most rewarding thing I have ever done, and has changed me
for the better in more ways than I could have possibly imagined. You truly
gain a new perspective on life. This change comes on slowly though, so
don't expect it to all happen right away. I second the recommendation of
finding a good bike trailer. Being a parent has definitely cut down on my
riding and wrenching time, but incorporating your children into your riding
helps.

I means that your life is going to change in many ways, but for the better.
As for biking, start looking for a trailer. I suggest a larger (100 pound
capacity) Burley trailer. The baby won't ride in it right away, but you can
the seat out and use it for cargo. You will be making many emergency supply
runs for diapers, etc.

But relax, focus on your wife now...and enjoy! Everything will be good. My
kids are both "self propelled" now, they ride their bikes to school. But
that is a distant future for you. :-)

[RBW] Re: Chainstay protector

2016-02-11 Thread Robert Liebermann
Hmm, my posts don't seem to make it here, but will try again since nobody's
mentioned:

The now unavailable and apparently un-invented, but formerly ubiquitous
(early 80s; height of civilization time) stainless steel adhesive chainstay
protector is the only way to go (or to have gone). Easy grease wipe-off,
silver, made of an actual durable material rather than some ugly plastic
that'll immediately get all chewed & ripped up...

I bought a few about a dozen years ago on eb (I think the guy made them
himself), I think soma or somebody very briefly had them about 5 years ago,
otherwise not seen since everybody had them back in the old days.

To me this is such an obviously superior, cheap to manufacture, easy, and
practical in every way thing that it's bizarre nobody's making and selling
them. I think there is one eb.uk seller with them but the post to the us is
prohibitive.

A few years ago I mistakenly tried a vo 'elk leather' one out of curiosity,
but it turned out to be ugly, of cheap-looking thin shaggy leather, and
just ridiculous.

Far as I'm concerned, chipped paint is a better situation than any of the
other 'protectors' nowadays.

Congrats!

You won't get as much value out of the components if you sell them with the
Sam. And, buyers often prefer to do a custom build anyway. So, I
recommend salvaging all that you can and then offering the leftovers
(calipers, etc) with the Sam frame.

I just picked up a Roadeo frame from the list, and one of its many
attractive factors for me was that I could re-use almost the entire group
from my existing road bike (90s Italian steel, a Giordana) with the
exception of brake calipers, tires, and bar wrap. Oh, and I swapped a 2 cm
shorter stem to counter the TT difference of the 59 Roadeo vs the 57
Giordana.

Re: [RBW] Re: Pondering fatherhood

2016-02-11 Thread René Sterental
The great stories of kids who have gone on to embrace the love of bikes
(and other passions) from their parents are wonderful. However, IMO, one of
the hardest things one has to do as a parent (two daughters in their 20s
and a teenage son) is deal with the reality when one (or all) of your kids
develops other passions that don't have anything to do with yours and
reject (to different degrees) sharing yours. Children develop their own
personalities and passions and one of the best aspect of being a parent is
encouraging them to do so. Yet, it also hurts when they reject sharing
yours. This is an important lesson I have learned over the years, and
covers many more aspects than just sharing a hobby or a passion. And one
has to be supportive and understanding and learn to deal with this
discovery process. And keep hoping that when they get older, they'll
re-discover the passion so you can share it with them! The good aspect of
this situation is that sometimes they infect you with their passions, and
you are the one who ends up sharing it with them.

Re: [RBW] Rivs on the Great Divide Route?

2016-02-11 Thread qwerty
Hi Mark,

I rode the GDMBR, last August. Not on a Riv, but a Surly Ogre. I was
riding WTB Nanos 29x2.3". The ride was fine with this setup, but I'd
hesitate to go any narrower than about 2" tire width. The route
offers alternate options in many places where you can avoid the most
technical sections (mainly from Sparwood, B.C. to Roosville, Mt).
Once in Montana, you can also opt for paved highway shoulders, but
you'd forgo the best scenery.

I had small rear panniers along with frame/seat/bar bags. No issues
there either. It's certainly been done with the full complement of
traditional touring panniers, but I was glad to have my setup on the
more technical sections.

It's a great route and I highly recommend it. Let us know how it goes.

Re: [RBW] Re: Chainstay protector

2016-02-11 Thread jeffrey kane
Your chain stay protector is doing it's job if it protects the paint on
your stay -- and if it does that (and often) then it's going to be filthy
before long. All that pretty cloth tape & twine work ends up looking like
it's covered in black slime after a time and well, if that's your idea of
beausage then go for it ... Me, I'm with Will on this one. A roll of clear
Heli tape (like they sell for paddle board repair) is effective, clean
looking and easily replaced, And you can sneak in little pieces around the
front of the BB shell and cable housings where they may rub against your
head tube, etc ... the stuff is versatile and downright cheap in the long
view.

[RBW] Nice ride today, or: everyone needs a gofast road bike.

2016-02-11 Thread Patrick Moore
20 miles -- no biggy; but I had no errand to run, so I took the gofast. The
Elk Pass tires are so nice; I can detour onto dirt, firm dirt and light
gravel, if I like -- despite their weight of 175 grams. Not that gofast
bikes need to have this capacity; but it is nice to have it when the tires
that allow it are the fastest pavement tires I've ridden (this is a seat of
pants/leg torque/cadence estimate). In fact, saying that gofasts have to be
dirt capable is like saying a racing car has to have a trunk.

Anyway: sunny, breezy, temps over 60F -- very nice; a detour for a couple
of minor hills -- living in The Valley as I do, hills have to looked for.

The point, if this divagation has a point: I'm glad I have a gofast!
Everyone ought to have one as one of the statutorily minimum 4 bikes in
their stable. Fully kitted commuting or errand bike; check. Dirt bike;
check. Beater; check. Gofast.

I:

'03 Riv: errands.
'02: gofast.
Race Lite and hopefully forthcoming Matthews: dirt.
Dahon: beater.

Re: [RBW] The joys of modern lighting... we've come a long way!

2016-02-11 Thread Eric Norris
Ryan:

The problem, I believe, is more from the design of modern lights than the
brightness. By and large, the lights you can buy in US—and this includes pretty
much every LED light on the market—throw out a cone of light that shines up and
much as it shines down. It might be “focused,” but it’s still a cone.

German-made lights like the Edelux, on the other hand, focus their light to
shine mostly down on the road, where it needs to be. Light shining up and
toward other riders is minimized. Modern cars work the same way—point your car
at a garage door or a wall and you’ll usually see pretty sharp cutoff line with
light below and dark above. There’s no reason why a light can’t be bright *and*
non-blinding.

But it’s much easier to build a reflector that creates cone-shaped light, which
is probably why most lights do this. German regulations, in particular, don’t
allow this, which is why Edelux and other German-approved lights are better
focused.

This state of affairs probably won’t change until US regulators get around to
adopting regulations like those in Europe, and I haven’t heard of any movement
in this direction.

[RBW] Rivs on the Great Divide Route?

2016-02-11 Thread Mark Reimer
Hello,

I'm planning out a June bike tour to coincide with the adventure cycling
associations 40th anniversary party in Missoula, Montana.

I'm thinking of flying to Edmonton, riding or busing to Jasper, then riding
the Icefields Parkway to Banff. Haven't heard of the Icefields Parkway? Do
yourself a favour and just Google 'cycling the icefields parkway'. It's
Canada's crown jewel for paved bike touring. Glaciers, mountains, wildlife
and campgrounds everywhere.

>From Banff I want to hop on the Great Divide Mountainbike route and ride to
Missoula. Has anyone done that section of it? I'm just wondering how a more
traditional touring setup like my Atlantis would handle the route. I know
most of the GDMBR is just gravel roads, but I've also read that the
Canadian and Montana section is some of the rougher single track. How about
it, any of you taken your Rivs on this trail?

Also, anyone going to be in Missoula!?

[RBW] Re: Pondering fatherhood

2016-02-11 Thread Dan
When my first daughter was born (19 years ago, time flies) I ran out and
got a Burley trailer. I was really excited to get her into the fun of
biking with me, but the first few times we rode around the local lake she
fussed and complained. The highlight for her was getting out at the park at
the halfway point and swinging on the swings. Then one day, when she was
about 8 months old, we were on the return leg of the loop and on a little
downhill I let the bike go faster than I usually did. Halfway down the
hill, coming from the trailer I heard "Wh! Wh!" I was so happy,
still makes me smile when I think about it. Today that girl has 3 bikes
and is always up for a ride. Hectic summer schedules scuttled plans for an
overnight last year but we're gonna hope for one again this summer.

Re: [RBW] Re: Pondering fatherhood

2016-02-11 Thread Ron Mc
Rene, I've always taken the approach with my daughter to be a facilitator,
not a teacher. Growing up fly fishing at the creek, we might not fish at
all.

Sometimes she would fish 10 minutes, sometimes none, sometimes wanting to
fish 3 hours on every hole she had ever been to on the creek.

The point is, she wanted to be there. The rest is gravy.

Same with bicycling. You can offer it and help them with questions, but
the choice has to be theirs.

In her case, paddling a kayak across the flats (and beating 3 grown men 5
miles into the wind when she was 12-y-o), charging 20 miles on a bicycle,
or catching a big fish - it all played to her natural competitive nature.

I took up bicycling again because she had the interest. First bought a
kayak so she and I could tandem - that lasted a year, and then she had to
paddle her own boat.

My passion is my daughter.

her favorite part of fishing, though, has always been the fillet table - I
think she's going to be a surgeon, unless fighter pilot wins out. .

I like the idea of the Riv tandem with baby carrier over stoker's
handlebars, followed later by one of those burley trailer bikes when
pedaling becomes part of the interest.

Re: [RBW] Re: Pondering fatherhood

2016-02-11 Thread Patrick Moore
Congratulations on the new (forthcoming?) child. My daughter is one of the
best things that happened to me, joy far outweighing grief. But be aware:
daughters, at least my daughter, became less of a handful but a lot more
expensive as she got older!

I bought my now 14 1/2 year old daughter some pretty nice children's bikes
when she was small, starting with a pneumatic-tired tricycle at age 2
(which she'd ride to the nearby Albertson's with me and cruise up and down
the aisles -- it had remote parent steering for emergencies). From 2 until
4 or so, she enjoyed our Saturday morning outings in her trailer, me on a
67" fixed Raleigh Technium -- good times!

But when I put her on a Burley Trail-a-bike, we went 50 feet, and she said,
in effect, "never again." Catie had various Electra cruisers, and enjoyed
riding up and down our cul-de-sac, but when she hit 12 she gradually lost
interest; she hasn't ridden her Trek mountain bike for12 months or more.

Thats' fine; it doesn't hurt or disappoint me in the least. She is very
interested in singing (All State choir), drawing and painting (contest
winner), cooking, piano, reading, lately guitar -- heck, I can't keep up! I
am just as happy to buy her, as I did very recently, a nice Yamaha full
sized key board and kit for the price of a decent bike, as I am to spend
the $$ on cycling stuff.

What Rene says is very true. My older (9 year old) son likes to point out

forth, and it's good.

My younger son is all about bike camping, though!

[RBW] Pondering fatherhood

2016-02-11 Thread Tim Wood
Hey hey! Congrats Jim! A lot of good fatherly advice in this thread, but I'm
here to say that bikes and beer will be the key to survival! - not that I'm
condoning drinking to cope, I am a police officer after all! But I find that
getting away on my bike and having a beer is some of the best
dad-coping-strategy I can think of. Helps one reflect, take stock on life, and
when you come back home you are happy, calm, and ready to be the best dad you
can be. So my advice, don't stop taking time for yourself and make sure it
includes bikes and pitchers!

Cheers,

Tim

I like your statutory minimum 4 proposal... Mostly because of conveniently
aligns to my own stable!

Saluki - commuter, all round
Bombadil - singletrack fun-coaster, commuter alternate
XO-3 - 'beater' (in the most endearing way), single speed
Bob Jackson - go fast

Is a fat bike somehow both implied and outside of the 'statutory minimum 4'? :)

I was surprised how much I really enjoyed and continue to enjoy the stripped
down 32mm tired Jackson...

[RBW] NAHBS Rivendell Owner's Bunch/iBOB Social Ride--Sat 2/27 5:30pm

2016-02-11 Thread Jeremy Till
Hey Folks-

Just bought my tickets for NAHBS, definitely getting excited about this
event! As a resident of Sacramento, I thought I'd organize a meetup for my
friends on the Rivendell Owner's Bunch and Internet-BOB group, and share
some of the fun stuff about living and riding in Sac. Towards that end,
how does this sound?

Rivendell Owner's Bunch/iBOB Social Ride
A short ride at a social pace, at most 1 hour long
Meet: 5-5:30pm at Capitol Garage Restaurant & Bar
, corner of 15th & K St, just next to the
Convention Center.
End: New Helvetia Brewing Company , 18th &
Broadway (south end of Midtown, north end of Upper Land Park, easy biking
distance back to Midtown, Downtown, Amtrak, etc.)

I'll try to get to Capitol Garage around 5, so people who need respite from
the show floor can join me there for a pre-ride pint, and we'll get rolling
around 5:30. We'll take an easy ride along the river, around to New
Helvetia, my local watering hole, where they brew many fine ales and
lagers. Social pace, no drop, everyone welcome, etc. etc.

I know there's numerous other social events planned for that evening and
the whole weekend, so my intention is to make a relatively casual event so
people can come and go as they please. Say hi at the meetup, come for all
or none of the ride, meet us at New Helvetia, whatever. If there's still a
good group sticking around at New Helvetia, we can retire to my place which
is very close to there, and my wife has offered to grill us up some grub.

If this sounds like fun, please RSVP so I have a rough idea of count. If
we're a significant crowd, I'll warn the businesses of incoming bike nerds.
If you need to borrow a bike, PM me with your size and I'll see what I can
do.

See you soon,

Jeremy

[RBW] Rosco Bubbe

2016-02-11 Thread Joe Bernard
This name resurfaced on the BLUG yesterday. Its original proposed incarnation
was a child's bike, which Grant determined to be too expensive to sell. The
reintroduction specifies "adult bikes" with a seat-clamp intended for the new
tandem. Hmm...

RE: [RBW] New Shoe's for the Bombadil

2016-02-11 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J. (Retired Partner)
Justin: I have a set on my Saluki. No fenders. There's enough clearance so
that there's no rubbing, even under heavy pedaling, but definitely no room for
fenders. I think there's a couple of pics of the clearance on my Flickr stream
(which I can no longer access from my work computer). Tom

Don't you have a Saluki or AHH too?

Can you try that wheel set on that bike and see what the clearance looks like?

[RBW] Re: Pondering fatherhood

2016-02-11 Thread Deacon Patrick
Some things to consider that in our experience with four children eliminate
the "brutal" so many parents experience:

-- Breast feeding
-- Co-sleeping (no drugs or alcohol or soft beds)

Baby and mom quickly learn to sleep all night, even as nursing. It's the
lugged steel of parenting. Grin.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Hub Area racks & their accompanying Sackville bags

2016-02-11 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch

I don't have the HA rack, but I do have the backobike bags with the same
attachment system. It works very well, as you have discovered. However, the
original web straps with buckles that came with my bags (the red, above)
can be susceptible to fairly rapid wear. My theory is simple: square peg in
round hole, does not work so good. I noticed fraying on my straps at the
contact points with the two holes after a couple of months of riding every
day, approximately 80-100 miles a week, fairly tame trails and road, but
enough bumps and holes.

I purchased replacements from Rivendell. The green replacement straps
appear to have a tighter weave, and are wider (and unnecessarily longer). I
have not had them in long enough to notice a difference. Before ordering, I
substituted a strand of climber's rope, which worked fine and is rated for
a hefty load. Looks a bit more Rivish as well. Bottom line: I suspect this
could be a potential failure point over time, but is easily monitored and
addressed. I really like these bags, for reasons I expressed in another
post.`

[RBW] Re: Nitto Hub Area racks & their accompanying Sackville bags

2016-02-11 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
And P.S. I do use these often with a decent load weight, including grocery
shopping and sometimes overstuffing. But nothing they should not be able to
handle. And of course it is a snip of the scissor and a quick seal with a
match to shorten the replacement straps, which do appear to be much
heartier. If they eventually also begin to fray, I will just go with the
rope, which should last a very long time with no worries. (And I have extra
lengths of the rope, if anyone would like some for their sackville
panniers.)
