[RBW] Re: Another Appaloosa Rider

2016-03-28 Thread Jeremy Tavan
That looks fabulous so far, particularly the stem ornament. I am encouraged
by the tilt of your choco-moose bars - they're tilted down enough that I
could see that being genuinely comfortable. The bosco-moose bars my wife's
Clementine came with make no sense at all, given that you can't adjust the
angle and they default to a wrist-straining position. How do you like the
paddle grips on the swept-back bars?

You don't have a ton of room in back for seat bags, but you could do a
TrunkSack in back and a basket or moderate bag in front, though how that
will interact with the cable cluster I'm not sure. Also, such a practical
bike seems a bit naked without fenders, especially as you appear to live in
a part of the country that gets rain even in non-El-Niño years.

[RBW] Steerer Tube Honing

My Tech and Tallux stems both "buttomed" out in both my Rivbikes' steerer tubes.

I got a Nitto Pearl stem. Has less rise.
Also, the Tech Deluxe has less rise . 190mm quill, I think.

Re: [RBW] Stolen in East Bay: Grey Saddlesack (large) + brooks B17 saddle (honey)

2016-03-28 Thread Patrick Kelly
I'm sorta guessing that the reason they took the bag was because it
was attached to the saddle. It's known that you can resell brooks
saddles for actual money, whereas I doubt your off-the-shelf bike
thief would be able to sell a canvas saddle bag. So, I'm guessing that
it was easier to take the bag, than to leave it. I.e., easier to
detach from the bike once the saddle was free, than to detach from the
saddle. Amiright?

That makes perfect sense. I just cleaned it up with the hone. I didn't take

[RBW] Steerer Tube Honing

2016-03-28 Thread William deRosset
The steerer is butted and it sounds like you have inserted the stem to the
transition. The butt is there to reinforce a highly-loaded part of the bike.
Don't try to turn it down.

Instead, seek ye a shorter-quill stem.

Re: [RBW] Stolen in East Bay: Grey Saddlesack (large) + brooks B17 saddle (honey)

2016-03-28 Thread Sean Kline
Thanks all. And, FYI, I had not yet done what I had planned to
do...wax/ball-bearing the allen nut connecting my seat to the pit-locked
seat post. That would have at least the thief down.

Dave: there's nothing obviously special about the bag--the leather was
waxed, but it was still in new-ish condition. I received the bag
from Riv without slits cut in the leather bottom to connect it to a rack.
So, I cut rough slits for this purpose myself. It's wasn't the most elegant
looking but functional.

[RBW] Steerer Tube Honing

2016-03-28 Thread Frank Conway
I'm trying to put a fairly long Technomic stem in my Heron and it is only going
about halfway down the steerer tube. It didn't seem rusty or anything, but I
cleaned it up and tried taking a few thousandths off or knocking off any high
spots with a brake cylinder hone. It's nice and shiny now but to no avail.
Anyone encounter this before? If so, how'd you fix it?

Thanks,

Jonathan,

IMO the porteur rack is far too versatile a rack to limit to only one way
of use. Ride it bare for those chance days you find a small Weber grill on
the road or want to pick up a case of beer after a ride. I strap my tent
and sleeping bag and whatever other large/odd shaped things on it for
camping. Get a giant basket and attach it with mini-bungees for grocery
runs or picnics. A waterproof rack bag is essential for rainy days or
running lots of errands and not wanting to leave things in a basket. Keep
no way permanent and get the best of all worlds

MAP/Ahearne Bar Setup - 57cm width bar with Shimano mtb Silver brake levers

can be gently taken off), these are really nice comfy bars, only selling as
they're placeholders on my BMC Monster Cross which really is intended for
drop bars - $65 plus shipping OR $40 shipped for just the bars.

Soma Oxford Bar - Albatross clone in polished aluminum, shortened about

Hi Leah! Of the wooden bike boxes I've seen out there, that one is a pretty
good looking one. I personally would forgo the included mounting hardware
and get a nice sturdy front rack to mount it on, either using xxl zip ties
or toe straps. A couple of Riv irish straps couple be a stylish option too.

[RBW] Re: Need Your Advice on Husband's Crazy Clem Idea

2016-03-28 Thread Deacon Patrick
Check his tires for sizing, the 52cm Clem is likely 650B?

Having an official rack that this straps to looks far
better/stronger/heartier than those long, untriangulated stays they call
mounting hardware. It's the way I would go.

He should also be aware that weight on the front will effect handling. He
may want to strap some weight to his handlebars in a bag and see how he
likes the ride so he has an idea of what a front rack will do. Obviously,
this rack/crate will handle differently than a bag strapped to the
handlebars, but it will put him in the ballpark of understanding.

With abandon,
Patrick

Maybe not small zipties, but I just bought some huge heavy-duty ties from Ace
Hardware which might be strong enough. Toe straps are another thought..they're
pretty strong and you can pull them very tight. Whichever method you use, I
agree that mounting the crate on a rack is the way to go.

2016-03-28 Thread LeahFoy
You guys are funny. And my husband smiled as I read to him how so many agreed
he should strap a box to his bike.

Garth, yes, it is good to let people be individuals, but I'm also a believer in
playing to one's strengths. When it comes to launching research centers,
designing the layout and decor for the new office building, and creating and
implementing economic policies that will bolster and grow Nevada's economy,
he'll get no interference from me. But when it comes to bikes, anything
mechanical, or what foods we eat, I'm compelled to step in. *Sly smile here.*

I'm also unsure about the mounting. I wonder if I should just order a rack and
somehow secure that box to the rack. With what would I do it, though? Not zip
ties, surely.

2016-03-28 Thread Minh
I will not get into the aesthetic (actually i like the wood...) my concern
is on the mounting, i think a rack would be more secure, never a big fan of
the stem plates, but think they would work better with a wire rack.

the other thing he may not be thinking about is that the wooden box will be
heavy, so without anything in it he's adding a few lbs of wood that he'll
have to lug around!

[RBW] Re: CLEARCOAT o'er baremetal & why we don't do it anymore

2016-03-28 Thread S. Greco

Going with clear powder is fine so long as you understand that you will
either paint the bike again in the future, or accept that it *will* rust
and that you *will* see it.

I think it is great option if you need a cheaper paint job and don’t want
to risk filleting out crisp lugwork. Some powder coaters can apply a nice
thin layer of color powder but it is a gamble and something you should
definitely discuss with a powder coater before hand. Most things that are
powdered do not require the level of detail or quality one expects in a
bicycle paint job.

I had a Serotta that was stripped of its paint, had its front derailleur
shifter braze-ons ground off to be run as a 1X. This bike was
scotchbrighted and then had the Serotta “decals” sandblasted in before
powdering. Looked cool, didn’t last. Areas where the steel grew rust
spiders would flake off.

I have a simpleone that had been stripped to add some braze-ons and needed
to be coated. i blasted it before powder because i’ve been told that the
tooth which the blasting applies is what insures that the paint adheres.
i’ve been riding it for 2 years in Rhode Island and it looks the same as
the day i picked it up from the powder coater.

I agree that the blasted + powder combo looks boring and depending on the
frame there can be varying qualities of brazing that you may or may not
want to see all the time. It also mostly looks like your bike is just
painted pewter, and there are plenty of nice pewterish grey sparkly paint
options out there to choose from which will give you a longer lasting,
better looking, and more predictable paint job.

any scuffs in clear powder look completely wild through polarized
sunglasses.
