Not due to zip ties. Due to the renter being Manny and doing some

Mark: Yes, that pulley thingy on the derailer is kinda like a Jtek. They were
also made by Avid for a while as a cable angle smoother outer (I'm not
convinced it makes any difference), and Shimano put one on the first XTR Rapid
Rise mech.

I'll probably replace the giant black boat anchor with something
lighter/prettier eventually, but in the meantime I'll put up with its annoying
ability to be cheap and heavy and shift just as well as any other derailer I've
ever used.

It really is a tasteful-looking ride. Flickr won't let me magnify--is that
some kind of jtek mechanism on the rear derailleur?

I hear you on the stair lugging. That is about the one area where little
old Miss Clementine can be a mama bear. Going down is the worst, though
after a thread on the subject of carrying mixtes down the stairs (was it
here or BoB?) I now have a slightly better technique. Further Riv content:
the bike pictured above came with only one folding pedal, so it is now
sporting the stock pedals off my Clementine.

[RBW] Re: Mini Cheviot

2016-06-10 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch

Definitely cool. Dig that matte black paint. Seems like Albas are going to
be a tight fit without a significantly longer stem?

I have something sort of similar. Riv content: If they had only taken the
bottom down tube, flipped it, and put it on top, I'd have a 20" folding
Clem(entine) with full suspension!...alas. And yes, I fold mine. It allows
me to fit the other eleven bicycles into my third-floor walk-up.

Word to the wise, Bill. For rentals you may want to seriously consider two,

charge an extra $10 an hour premium for crafty good taste.

Interested to hear how this pans out. It could help me justify a dozen or

Re: [RBW] Mini Cheviot

2016-06-10 Thread Bill Lindsay
Patrick queried about Joe's non folding small wheel bike:

"If it's not a folder, why 20" wheels?"

That's what some people would call a mini-velo. It's a pretty popular
genre in Japan, I'm told. It's supposed to ride well, like a
normal bike, but it takes up a lot less space than a
big-wheeled bike, like in your apartment. They are supposedly very traffic
maneuverable with the little wheels.

Flipping the script a little, let me ask you this: For every 100 rides
(outings?, excursions?) on your Hon Solo, how many times on average do you
fold it up?

2? 10? 50? 100? 200?

[RBW] Re: Plastic fenders - never again

2016-06-10 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
Well, aesthetically, I think that the cream SKS longboards look so
wonderful on a Riv. I agree with Michael that the integrated cap for the stays
can be a PITA, but in my experience, it's not that big of a deal. That being
said, I've had a couple of them break off at the tip anyway. I'm a bit of a
slob so it's not that big of a deal to me. I have Honjos on my MAP custom, and
they really look nice, but I probably wouldn't choose them over cream
Longboards. Right now, on my Hilsen, I have the SKS cream longboards, and the
fender lines aren't anywhere near perfect (since I removed and reinstalled them
for PBP)but I love the way they look. But right now I'm looking at the MAP with
the Honjos next to the Hilsen, and it looks pretty sharp too. Anyway, FWIW, I
like them both, but if it takes a little longer to install metal fenders, I'm
probably going with plastic since I'm sooo lazy and would rather spend my
time riding.

I've been meaning to try out Spinlister for a while. I have a huge stable,

what extent my stable can in part pay for itself. If it turns out to be a

Thanks! I'm taking a chance on the dark mustard. I'll probably add racks,
fenders, and a Brooks B67S in antique brown or black. I have some BioKork

accessories until after the bike arrives. I, too, still think of the bike

Interesting. I'd been thinking about swapping my indexed thumbie to the left
side to get the shifters in that position. I guess I'll give it a whirl. Man,
that bike looks amazing..hopefully I'll see it at the book talk thing.

It is really flat there so I just left it in the big ring and when I needed
to change gears I just changed the cassette cogs. I think I only needed 3
or 4 gears, tops, while I was there. Really flat.
Up here in central Maryland I definitely use all three rings. Mostly the
middle 36T ring. Rolling terrain.

PS- Dad just turned 75 last week!

[RBW] Re: Plastic fenders - never again

2016-06-10 Thread George Schick

"... I spent hours with a hair dryer trying to straighten a front SKS
fender for my Hunqapillar, then gave up and decided my Hunqapillar will
remain fenderless and knobby..."

A hair dryer may not get hot enough - use a heat gun. And be careful! A
heat gun can easily get too hot, melting the plastic and ruining the fender
for good. I wanted to put SKS P45's on my Ram, which has Shimano 600 SP
brakes. Apparently, these brakes were never intended to be used in
conjunction with fenders (not P45's, anyway) and, unlike the wider mouth
Tekro and various CP brakes, the arms would squeeze against the plastic
fender. I didn't like this so I heated the fenders just enough where the
brake arm interfered and then bent an indent into with a tool (some kind of
pliers - can't remember). Worked just fine.

Yes. SunTour had an abortive indexing system, but it was too little too
late and there probably aren't many if any still out there functioning;

If you want friction, the SunTour Sprint lever is one of the nicest
friction shifters ever made. Its reincarnation goes by the brand name
Silver, and Riv sell them. If you want indexed bar end shifters, you
now have some choices: Microshift, Shimano.

[RBW] Re: Share Hunq Build / pics and ideas?

2016-06-10 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Kevin,
The fenders are VO Stainless Steel 60mm Fenders, 26" ATB. Good clearance
with Compass RTP and Big Bens. (I haven't tried knobbies. The terrain that
I ride doesn't require them.)

I have moustache bars on now. For me, it's a good compromise bar for
commuting and riding with kids. I do miss the Noodles on the Hunq-- maybe
I'll swap to them soon.

Also-- the Noodles are great with a front basket. With my short headtube,
the Moustache bar doesn't really work with front basket.

[RBW] Re: Share Hunq Build / pics and ideas?

2016-06-10 Thread Kevin Lindsey
I'm currently running drop bars on my Hunq and find they work very well. I
originally set the bike up with Mustache bars and a Dirt Drop stem; they
worked wonderfully and were extremely comfortable, but they were ugly and
slow in a high wind (due to the very upright riding posture). Chiefly for
aesthetic reasons, I therefore decided to go for drop bars (Nitto Noodles);
I think a Hunq is much prettier in that configuration, it's easier to move
in and out of crowded bike racks, and it seems to run a bit faster
(although I'm willing to concede that any perceived increase in speed might
be my imagination; even if not, the idea of using the words "Hunq" and
"faster" in the same sentence seems somehow ungrammatical). It feels as
comfortable as it did with the Mustache bars and, on the whole, I'll
probably stick to the drops.

Rivendell should teach classes on how to install these things the right way.

They add some hardware that doesn't come in the box, like a cool bolt &

Very cool.

folks say otherwise." Someone mentioned Rivendell on a bike forum and the
sunshine came down and choirs of angels sang. So, then I had to learn all there
was about Rivendell and their velosophy. And one of the sites that hit on my
Google search was Annie Bikes. She's a dedicated commuter who hasn't bought a
new bike in 30 years or so. She had thought of Rivendell during the Betty Foy
and Cheviot times, but just didn't place the order for various reasons. But she
had several posts about admiring the Rivs and toying with the idea of having
one of her own.

I had seen her posts about looking for the perfect bike, and she was coming up
short. Then the Clementine (I don't care for its new name, it's forever a
Clementine to me) was released, and she seriously considered it but shied away
because she didn't want to plunk down her money without a test ride. Well,
guess who ordered a Rivendell Clementine yesterday?!? She had continued to hear
such good things about the bike that she did it. She really did it, and it is
the first new bike she's had in 30 years.

The gal from Lovely Bicycle currently has one in her possession and is doing a
write-up, probably as we speak. This is good publicity for Grant/Rivendell! And
if anyone deserved a Rivendell, it's Annie. So many miles!

 Hi Folks,

I think my post to the original got buried.

I wanted to throw out this ride as a potential Saturday ride from the
Inn and back with a stop at the Marin Museum of Bicycling. At first glance
it looks like a formidable ride 32 miles and 6200' elevation but we have
all day to do this ride. I purpose we bring a lunch with us and eat out on
the trail. Of course not all are up for a ride like this. I encourage
 folks
to chime in with a plan "B" and "C" route(s) maybe a bail out on my route
where we all meet at a specific time at the museum for a tour and a really
mellow ride staying closer to the Inn.

Without further fanfare here's the route
 .

 Your thoughts?

BRG is a wonderful color for a bike, especially a British bike. Here's the
current iteration of my BRG Bob Jackson:

The first version had drop bars:

Another great color, ATMO, is Emerald Green:

[RBW] FS: Cranks, Stem, Canti Brakes, 29" Tires, Dynamo Stuff.

2016-06-10 Thread David Banzer
Time to pay off the old credit card bill for a bunch of recent bike-related
purchases.
Prices include shipping unless noted.
Paypal Personal payment on these items please.
Local pickup in Chicago works, I'm across from Horner Park.
Thanks,
David
Chicago

1. SP SV-8 Dynamo Hub - new, never laced, 36h - $110

2. Son Edelux I Dynamo Light - original upright version, polished silver,
no fork mount, 54cm wire length, bare cable ends, I used it with Shimano/SP
type connection - $80

3. B Cyo IQ Premium Dynamo Light - used, works great no issues, full wire
length - $80

4. Sugino Cranks - I believe these are Alpinas, 110 double (no inner 74bcd
drillings), more traditional 5-bolt design, meaning no hidden 5th bolt,
172.5mm, no chainings - though I can add Willow rings at a reasonable price
($10 a chainring), crank is new - $70

5. Shimano Triple Cranks - Exage, FC-M520, silver-ish painted finish, I
have a few of these, 110/74, 170mm or 175mm, black chainring bolts, no
chainrings but I can include Willow rings at a reasonable price ($10 a
chainring) - $25

6. Velo Orange Grand Cru Cantilever Brakes - MK2 version, MAFAC type
design, includes straddle cables and generic silver hangers, comes with
new Koolstop Salmon pads, this is a whole bike's worth - $40

7. Tektro RBP 866 - new old stock, black (anodized I think), internal
spring design, like Paul brakes, this is a whole bike's worth - $25

8. Nitto Technomic Deluxe Quill Stem - 190mm overall height version, Pearl
quality, 12cm, 25.4mm clamp - $50

9. Velo Orange Threadless Stem - polished silver, 9cm, 26.0mm clamp,
earlier octagonal version - $18

10. Nitto CT80 Chromoly Threadless Stem - for 1-1/8" steerers,
fillet-brazed chromoly, and chrome finished, beautiful stem, 11cm, 25.4mm
clamp - $70

11. Continental Speed King Tires - 29 x 2.2 - pair - lightly used,
lightweight, smooth rolling tire, technically a mtb tire, but works great
for pavement - $75

12. Vee Rubber V12 Tires - 29 x 1.95, lightly used, folding bead, about
47mm wide on Dyads - $45

Also will have a single-speed/fixed-gear wheelset available soon. 700c,
CR18 rims, Formula/IRO low flange rear hub (36h), Suntour XC front hub
(32h). $100 plus shipping - I'm waiting on hubs to build up a new wheelset
first though, so probably a couple weeks before I could ship them. Local
pickup in Chicago highly encouraged on these.

Yes, I really enjoyed the flowers and animals immensely. Lotsa types we dont
see here in Maryland. I also loved all the different kinds of trees and

Sarasota.

In that part of Florida it is illegal to kill a Sand Hill Crane. But who would

soft. It's green/lighter green. I do have a random photo of the texture of

2016-06-10 Thread Lungimsam
Forgot to mention:

While there are no station stops along the way to drop off/pick up
passengers. It does stop a few times:

The train stops in South Carolina to swap engineers around 2:30 am I was
told(?).
You can relieve your service dog there at that time.

They also stop to give right of way to any CSX trains, as CSX owns the
railroad tracks, not Amtrak. So CSX gets priority. Also the commuter Amtrak
trains get priority. That's what I was told, anyway.

[RBW] Re: Cycling in Tampa with pics...

2016-06-10 Thread Lungimsam
Hi Erl,

>From where I live (just north of DC) it takes 16 hours *by car* non-stop
except for hopping out of the car and taking a bathroom break at each
state's welcome center and then hopping back in the car and continuing.
That's obeying the speed limits.

I took the auto train to get back home. I liked the auto train. I am sure
others may have different opinions. But based on my experience I would say:

*Pros of auto train:*

1.You drive up at the dedicated auto train station, get out of your car,
and walk right into the station. Car drop off and pickup couldn't be
easier. They slap a magnetic number on your car and give you a travel
folder with the info inside. You leave your bike and all your luggage
in your car. It then goes on a train car that is on your train.
2.You have your car with you right away when you get off the train. Maybe
takes a half hour to get all the cars off? They say up to 1.5 hours, but I
think I waited 30 minutes or so for mine to come off the train. They
definitely were hurrying to get the cars off the train, as you could stand
and watch them fly off the train one after the other.
3.You don't have to worry about car breaking down and having to work out
the logistics of getting to your destination.
4.You don't have to worry about getting too sleepy to drive.
5.You don't have to stop and get hotel if you get too sleepy to drive.
6.You don't have to stop and sleep at a rest stop and risk your safety.
7. I rode business class. A slight bump up in fee but worth it. Never done
it before but the price jump was not a lot and it sounded like a good
upgrade.
I got to eat with the sleeper car passengers in the dining car. Food was
excellent and fresh.
8. They served dinner and breakfast. Train left early afternoon and arrived
in the morning after breakfast in VA.
9. My seat was on the upper level of the train - great views!
10. I could almost lay flat when their seats lean back and there is
an extension that comes out of bottom of seat for stretching out legs all
the way.
11. Seats are wide and roomy.
12. Movies in the lounge car.
13. It wasn't crowded at all on the train, even though the station was full
before departure. ~50 seats in my car. Only ~10 people in the car. I slept
well along the two seats in my row. Quiet.
14. You can even bump up to three different levels of sleeper cars that
have beds. But if you do this, I recommend going whole hog and getting the
best, because:

*Cons of auto train:*
1. Lower priced sleeper cars are vey tight and looked like very cramped
quarters. One I saw you have to mount the bed from out in the train
hallway. Like a mini closet you sleep in.
The more expensive car I saw looked like a mini room with space to stretch
out.
2. One passenger told me she doesn't do sleeper cars and prefers seats
because of the train's side-to-side rocking movement when laying down makes
it hard for her to sleep. Also said the bed wasn't long enough for her.
3. Train can be late to depart.
4. Mine was a couple hours late to depart.
5. Bathrooms are airplane sized. Not really a con, but just to let you know.

So, if you are willing to resign yourself to a full day of train travel,
and then the car ride to your destination/home, I think it is well worth it
so you can have your own car and not have to rent/lease.
I thought it was fine and most of the passengers seemed to be snow-birds
that I talked to.
One lady told me that she once tried to fly down for the winter and have
her car delivered by truck. She says that after you get to Florida it still
takes a few days for the car to get delivered, so you have no car for three
days. Once her car was stranded in Nevada. Got rerouted by the car delivery
people somehow. So now she takes the auto train so her car is with her on
the train, and she drives off into the sunset when she gets off the train.

[RBW] Share Hunq Build / pics and ideas?

2016-06-10 Thread Philip Kim
My Hunq has arrived and the bike shop will start my build shortly. So far
it my build will be:

Brooks Swift, Nitto Seatpost
Paul cantis (retro front, touring rear)
Haulin Colin Front Rack
Marks rack for rear
Atlass 26" wheelset, dyno front
Compass Rat Traps tubeless
10 speed, SLX/XT mix, 11-34 cassette
White Industries VBC crank

I'm having trouble deciding on the cockpit.

I've very torn between having Salsa Cowbells or Jones Loop bar on there.
Would a drop bars even make sense on a Hunq? If Jones Loop bar, I would get
Microshift MTB thumbies, and Paul Levers. But if it's Salsa, I might try to
go the Gevenalle/IRD style shifting.

I was wondering if Hunq owners can share their favorite Hunq build/pics for
inspiration. I've been looking at Flickr, but I know not everyone uploads
pictures there.

[RBW] Chevy-ut meets Betty, falls in love.

2016-06-10 Thread Michael Hechmer
Ever Since Pat's Betty Foy arrived here for Christmas of '14 my daughter
has been oogling it. This year she upped the campaign by telling us that
she was having trouble getting her leg over her Soma Double Cross with our
grandson, Simon, on the tag along. So we put a plan together. I bought
the frameset, along with BB, HS, & seatpost. She bought a pair of the Clem
wheels, and Tectro brakes. Everything else was to come off of her mothers
old Specialized Sequoia, which had nice old parts on it.

The frame arrived and I popped it into my repair stand, then dug the
sequoia and an old repair stand out of the basement. That's when Murphy
joined the team and offered to help! First up remove the pretty Shimano
600 crank and put it on the Cheviut. No way it was goint to work with that
BB, which was way too short. I figured Riv had planned for a Sugino crank,
which is what's on my Trek, along with a BB that is too long for it. Got
out the Trek, pulled the crank arms & BB. Installed BB in the Chevy.
Still too short. Reassembled Trek and returned to Sequoia to take off the
Stronglight BB. Went to pull the left side crank arm and the threads
stripped out. I wondered how long the crank & BB had been together? I
managed to remove the BB & arm as a single unit. I soaked the joint in
liquid wrench and started through the parts bin, looking for an
alternative. As luck would have it I found an old and nice Specialized
crank, which didn't work with any modern FD, but had a near perfect mach
for the left arm. More soaking and a half hour of gentle hammering
released the damaged arm from the Stronglight. They look good on the
Chevy. Next up, derailleurs. XT FD zip, zip, I'm done. Ultegra RD just
doesn't want to go on??!! Turns out the small flap that the B screw goes
through is bent. After much struggle I failed to straighten it and
realized I needed to disassemble the derailleur. Couldn't figure out how
to do that so headed off (15 miles) to the LBS and my favorite cycologist,
Gene. He said it's easy, but best you had not tried to do it. All you
need to do is remove this clip, but if you don't have your finger here you
end up with lots of small parts all over the bench and no idea how to put
it back together. Back home we moved on to the cassette. Seperated it
from the Sequoia and realized it was a SRAM, which Pat had complained never
shifted well. I remembered it didn't shift well when it was on my bike
either. Two strikes, it's out. Back to the parts bin. Found, a brand new
shimano cassette, only it was missing a cog, the 12. No problem, as I
always buy an extra small cog with every cassette, so I had one to spare.
Only I couldn't get all nine cogs on the hub. Tried and tried and tried.
Would not fit. Suddenly the light went off - this is an eight speed
cassette! I have no idea how this thing came into my house because I have
never ridden an eight speed set up. I went directly from 7 to 9. Put on a
chain and adjusted the deraillers, which would have been quicker if I could
have remembered which screw was up and which down.

Next came the cock pit. This was going to be easy because I had a pair of
drop bars, which is what she wanted, already attached to the stem, with
brake & shift levers, and HB tape all in place, and all the cable housing
beautifully tucked under the tape. But, it was not to be. The cable
housing were all about an inch too short. Back to LBS for new housing.
Start over. Cut the seat post because RBW shipped the worlds longest post
with their shortest bike. Next up reconfigure the cream long boards and
get them on the Chevy. I have all ready written about the joy of that.
Finally some good news. The kickstand went on easy.

But, alls well that ends well.

I changed out my JA Choco-Moose bars for the Bullmoose bars when I received

I'll need a big box to ship, so that is why the shipping cost is high.
$100 (net to me) + $20 shipping

Re: [RBW] Re: Speaking of Fenders

2016-06-10 Thread ascpgh
Pursuing the paradox of more (supple tire width, fenders, brake clearance
of both without contact at rest), I just installed Paul Racers and Compass
Stampede Passes on my fendered Rambouillet. The center mount Racer caliper
does an amazing job of keeping clear of the space reserved for tire and
fender clearance at rest or in use. No more rattles from fenders against
lumpy brake arms from off-center bumps!

First impressions are exceedingly good on all functioning fronts, so much
that I'm waiting until my miles tested assure validity before I pronounce
the outcome an unqualified success.

That's not a "claim," it's fact.

The Compass centerpull can be thought of as a Mafac RAID version 1.1.
The RAID was available in a bolt-on version, and I have that brake on my
Kogswell P/R. With the straddle cable Q/R undone, it opens wide enough
that you never even notice the brake removing and replacing a 42mm
Hetre. The pivots are Mafac centerpull pivots, and if you have a pair
of RAID backing plates you could mount Compass brakes on any bike set up
for bolt-on centerpull brakes, so the studs aren't quite as "unique" as
your statement makes them sound. Thanks to the availability of the
Compass centerpull, the price of Mafac RAIDs on ebay has stopped its
meteoric rise; I just checked, and there's one set available right now
complete with levers for $150 BIN, and another NOS for $299. Compass
makes the bushings, etc. available, so if someone wanted to, they could
buy a set of RAIDs on ebay (all of which I've ever seen come with
backing plates) and bring them up to the level of the Compass brakes.

Bottom line: if you're looking for a brake for your Rivendell that can
easily fit a tire the width of a Hetre, Mafac RAID centerpulls are a
viable option.
