That's precisely consistent with my own experience. For anybody who wants
another source of data, I have a lot of respect for the Competitive Cyclist
fit calculator.

http://www.competitivecyclist.com/Store/catalog/fitCalculatorBike.jsp

That calculator refers to three fit styles - competitive (contemporary
race), Eddy (traditional race), and French. I would think that the French
fit would suit many Riv riders (as it does me). Even for those who want
high bars, it should get the frame size relative to saddle height about
right, and should get top tube length about right. Upright bars with back
sweep, I have no idea.

Re: [RBW] Re: PSA 61cm atlantis frameset on ebay

2016-07-03 Thread Mark Wilkins
It might be too small, but it could depend on what sort of standover
you'd like. I'm a 90ish PBH, ride a 61 Atlantis with Little Big Bens,
and have very little standover. If you're looking for more breathing
room, you could probably make a 61cm work with a longer stem and a
little more seatpost.

[RBW] Re: Is there a trick to reassembling center-pull brake calipers?

2016-07-03 Thread Mark Wilkins
Many thanks for the suggestions, everyone! The best idea I heard was
not to take them apart in the first place. ;-)

My final solution was to assemble the brakes with the left spring
under the hook. I then laid the brake on its left side and applied
pressure to the bridge. This compressed the brake and gave me room to
work with the other (unhooked) spring. I had tried a few different
tools to press/leverage the spring into place but they kept slipping
off. Finally, I tried some needle-nose pliers (again), and was able
work the spring under the right hook.

Thanks again,

Mark

Re: [RBW] Hunq porteur options?

I have used both a Haulin' Colin and a Pass & Stow porteur rack. If you want to
use front panniers without adding more rack hardware the P is a great choice.

Both are good choices and super solid racks.

I have a P on my Cheviot currently. A little tight getting the mount plate
over the side-pull brake - that would not be an issue with the Hunq, of course.

[RBW] Re: Is there a trick to reassembling center-pull brake calipers?

2016-07-03 Thread GAJett
>From the diagram you attached these look like near straight-up copies of
the Weinmann centerpulls.

* Assemble the brake arms loosely on the bridge, springs included, with the
arms over-extended. The cross-arms should be *below* the hooks an the
bridge.
If there is a tab near the center-line of one arm, and a slot on the
other, make sure they are engaged. These cannot be seen on the diagrams.
* Place the springs in their proper positions against the hooks on the arms
and the bridge.
* Work the arms, together, back into their proper alignment. You will need
to "force" the arms up and over the "hooks".
* Once properly aligned tighten the pivot bolts to spec and your done. You
will need to hold the arms "closed" while you tighten.
You may want to tighten from side to side to tighten slowly and check
the alignment remains correct.

The trick is to leave the arms loose enough so you can clear the hooks.
The lower portion of the brake arms give you a huge mechanical advantage
over trying to force the springs alone over the hooks.

I've torn those down many times and reassembled without problems, once I
learned this trick. If this doesn't work, then the only issue remaining
would be trying to install the springs incorrectly. Make sure they are in
the right orientation? Take a look at the brake you haven't disassembled
for additional guidance.

[RBW] FS Merlin Titanium Bike - Asking $1,750 OBO

2016-07-03 Thread James Valiensi
Hi,

I know this is way off topic. But I'm a long time Rivendell rider and also
love other bikes too. So maybe somebody is interested or has a friend that
may be.

47cm Center of BB to top of seat post x 55cm top tube. Dimensions are
approximate (I measured w/ a metric tape measure) I think this was called a
medium by Merlin. This bike would typically fit someone between 5'-6" and
5'-8".

The original fork was replaced with a Columbus carbon fiber unit. The Chris
King headset and spacers were add at the same time. The stem is an 10cm
ExtraLight. These parts are like new and maybe have one or two short rides.
The drive train is a mix of Campy Record and Athena 11sp. Athena Crank set
and shifters, Record Derailleurs and a Chorus cassette (12-27). The brakes
are Ciamillo's Zero G's. The wheels are Rolf's Vigor RS. Tires a Gravel
Kings. Saddle is a Flite and the Seat Post is a Woodman. The bars are Zipp
aluminum. The pedals are Dura Ace aluminum and the wheel skewers are light
weigh gold anodized (KMC?)

The seat post is max'd out at 28" from BB to saddle. If yo need more,
you'll need another post of bigger frame.
The bike is pretty light. The build kit is much better than what it came
with.
There is nothing wrong with the bicycle and the frame and parts are not
damaged, but there may be a few cosmetic scratches on the shifters and
derailleurs. It all works.

My 70+ year old dad road it for a few years then gave it to me. I rebuilt
it. I didn't like the Shimano it had and I figured it would be good to put
a new carbon fork on it for safety. I took off the ugly stickers and
cleaned the frame up.
I'm in Los Angeles - local pick up would be best, but I'll ship too.

[RBW] Hunq porteur options?

2016-07-03 Thread Jay Lonner
I routinely load my Nitto mini front rack to the limits of my comfort, and
I'm in the market for something that safely can accommodate heavier loads.
I'm soliciting input on porteur racks such as those from Soma, VO, and the
newish Surly 24-pack. I'm particularly curious about whether the Surly rack
attachments align decently with the fork crown mounts on my Hunq.

Cross-posting to the internet-bob list, sorry if it causes inbox clutter.

[RBW] Re: Is there a trick to reassembling center-pull brake calipers?

2016-07-03 Thread Will
Scare up a small metal tube (look at this link for a visual:
http://www.hobbylinc.com/hobby-and-craft-metal-tubing).

The tube will manage the spring and give you leverage with control. Works
better than pliers or other "grabbers". Local hardware should have
something close.

[RBW] Is there a trick to reassembling center-pull brake calipers?

2016-07-03 Thread LBleriot
Yeah. Don't take them apart. I bolted the main arch to the fork and loosely
assembled the arms working one at a time. Once you get everything loosely
(barely) in place, tighten the pivot bolts down.

Eric, do try it again. I think they are slowly getting those sections linked
better. For instance, there is now a brand new beautiful trail - the Alum Creek
Trail - through Columbus. (We were eventually forced up onto unfriendly roads
by a flood that came through a couple days prior).

Though the Kokosing Trail was our overall favorite, the Ohio & Erie Towpath
Park between Cleveland and Peninsula is a gem.

Re: [RBW] Ohio to Erie Trail trip

2016-07-03 Thread 'Paul Germain' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks Erl. North to south, actually, because of logistics. We wanted to rent a
van for the return and the Cincinnati airport worked out best for that because
of the location of the Cleveland airport - we actually left our vehicle (with
permission) at a secure parking area at one of the Cuyahoga Nat'l Towpath Park
and rode from there (just below Cleveland) to Cincinnati. There, we were able
to hop on an express bus in downtown Cincy to the airport rental, which had a
good selection of vans and was open longer hours and every day, just in case we
arrived late.

It worked out well. I don't know if there is an advantage to riding the other
way - South to North - but have some friends who will be doing it that way in
late July. They will not be camping, but motels, which is obviously more
expensive. Also, they are taking 7 days, which would allow for more sightseeing.

While primitive camping is available along the way, it's not particularly well
marked and generally have no water or showers, etc. So, we planned one motel
night for creature comforts and to wash clothes.

Do lots of homework! While the trail & connector roads are generally marked,
and the maps are a help, they come with many detours, changes and even one
completely new trail through Columbus. I don't have a GPS, but Dan's work on
that was essential to us not getting lost and doing some improvisation when we
hit flooding from that big storm that hit WVa so hard.

Paul,
Great photos. It appears you rode south to north; would you recommend that?
Was there a particular reason? It appears from the trail website, that camping
options are plentiful and frequent. I have added this tour to my short list
for next summer. Any advice, tips, warnings you could offer would be
appreciated.
Many thanks,

365 miles in 5 days works out to just over 70 miles per day, which is quite
a bit for self-supported touring. Along with having to pitch and strike
your tents, cook your meals, etc. that you wouldn't have had much time for
any sightseeing. Good planning to schedule it during some of the longest
daylight hours of the Summer, though. Looks like it was a blast!

Re: [RBW] Smaller Riv sizing

2016-07-03 Thread Matt B.
It's probably better to go by reach, stack and STA nowadays if you know what
you like. But on more traditional bikes with levelish top tubes like Riv used
to do, or especially vintage bikes i.e. with no HT extension, it's PBH - 25cm
for a fistful of seat post and if you want the bars anywhere near saddle
height. It does say this somewhere on Riv's website but I can't find it.
