Re: [RBW] Re: Poor man's Rivendell Road/Roadeo substitute?

2016-11-19 Thread Patrick Moore
Jim: the AM was a clubmen's (and doubtless clubwomen's) hub, with
freewheel, that had medium gaps as described -- direct, + 11.55%, - 12.5%.
I could set it up, for example, with a ~70" direct 2nd and have a 78"
high/3d and a 61" 1st/low, an excellent spread for my riding. (SA made 3
speed hubs for time trialists that were even tighter, and gave the
equivalent of a straight block, assuming your block was a 3 cog block.
There were 2, whose nomenclature I forget, but if your cruising gear was,
say, 80", they'd give you roughly a 85" high and a 75" low.)

The smart thing would be to have Chauncey add rear brake braze ons to the
gofast, but the alternative is to find a bike, or a frame, that handles
pretty much like a Rivendell road model.. I could live with 126; I just
want suggestions from people who know the Rivendell feel and can suggest
makes and models to look out for.

The more I think about this, the more it simply makes sense to spend a few
hundred $$ having the gofast altered; after all, I could still ride it
fixed, and that would remain its primary function. But as I age (61), I'm
finding it nice to have a range of gears.

(Yes, I know I could build up a derailleur bike, but I *want* a bike for
the AM.)

Is your name Igor? Or am I confusing you with another poster? If so, sorry.

Thanks. What models were these? And to be clear: you've found these to
mimic Rivendell road bikes' handling? I mean the signature stability with
intuitive or even unthinking perfection in turn-in.

I want ideas about a frame that has these handling qualities.

Really, the RD cranks are of inferior quality? Can anyone else comment on
that? I have been looking to RD for my new IGH build, need only a single
chainring and not needing a protector ring. Plus, I need a 54mm chainline.

2016-11-19 Thread Jim M.
I enjoy your "looking for hen's teeth" quests. Is this to be another fixie?
What's an AM hub?

It sounds like you want some one who is familiar with the Riv ride and is
also old enough to have ridden a bunch of '70s bikes so they can recommend
one that is obscure enough not to command a vintage price.

My favorite older bikes are a Merckx, a 3Rensho, and a Gazelle, all of
which, in my opinion, handle well and cost me less than $400 each. Of
those, Gazelle is obscure enough to be relatively inexpensive for a bike
made from 531. But my bikes are all late '70s or 'early '80s and have 126
spacing. Your search for a 120 makes it much more difficult, especially to
find a decent one at a non-vintage price. Bertin, Gitane, RIH (another
Dutch maker), might be what you're looking for. There are the Swedish-made
Crescents, some of which are 531. I'm sure there a bunch of other obscure
brands that I don't know about too. I'd probably look for a Brit bike,
though, but finding one at a low cost from that era will be difficult.

[RBW] Poor man's Rivendell Road/Roadeo substitute?

2016-11-19 Thread Patrick Moore
If you wanted the signature Rivendell road ride, but couldn't afford
another custom or the Roadeo (and didn't want the Ram -- tried one), and if
you thought you might look for an old road racing frame from the '70s, what
would you look for? 120 mm OL spacing.

After trying out, once again, the S3X hub on the gofast, the hub gear wheel
idea being a quick-swap way to adapt this bike to occasional longer and
hilly rides, I find that the lash is a deal killer. So I want a frame to
build a bike around my AM hub.

I'd probably give any such frame to Chauncey to have him remove unneeded
braze-ons (like icky derailleur bosses and hangar), and have him braze on
needed ones, like a roller boss at the seat tube junction and a housing
stop mid-top tube for the trigger cable housing, and then have it powder
coated.

I did have a decent 1973 Motobecane 2nd level Record, and that was close to
what I want, but it wasn't cigar level; it didn't handle quite like my Rivs.

(I am tempted to give Chauncey my gofast, and tell him: "Replicate this."
But that would be at least $1200 -- cheap at the price, but more than I
ought to consider at this point.)

(Wouldn't it be lovely to have a customized Roadeo, 57 for me, without the
derailleur bits?)

Ideas?

Thanks.

Patrick Moore, who just again rode the gofast with 95"/71"/59" S3X in windy
ABQ, NM

Aside: As I turned north onto Corrales Road on the way to Stevie's, with
wind blowing from the south, I shifted into the 95" and bowled along
merrily -- until the road turned and the wind quartered and my cadence
dropped like a stone. How much better the ASC would be: you could have that
downhill and tailwind gear at say 80", and at 90% have a 72" cruising and
at 75% a 59" climbing -- though they say that the ASC also had lashings of
lash. The AM, with direct + 11.55% and - 12.5% would give one, say, a 70"
direct, a 78" high, and a 61" low -- very usable gears, not to mention
coasting.

[RBW] Re: Three great test rides at RBWHQ

2016-11-19 Thread dstein
I went in yesterday and rode the Rosco Road, it's pretty awesome.
Lightweight and sporty feeling. I've never ridden the Roadeo or any of its
predecessors but I thought this was a pretty nice riding road bike and felt
sportier than other road-ish bikes I've ridden (though not a scientific
analysis by any means).

The 650b 53cm hunq was out at the moment though, sadly (though it was out
on a commercial shoot so keep your eyes out in tv land for a hunq).

Made me feel pretty excited about the Roadini and the single speed model
coming out.

John, I have an 89.2 PBH and happily ride a 62cm Legolas. Grant chose 61.5cm
for my Riv custom road frame.

I made my entry rather "bike heavy," the rest of the apartment has
"normal" art. It does leave an eccentric first impression.

You recall correctly. When Grant successfully persuaded Tektro to make 57mm
(and 75mm!) brakes, and then Shimano joined the party, the game changed
significantly.

[RBW] Re: Sugino XD crankarms only

2016-11-19 Thread Nick Payne
Thanks for the various replies. I checked the links provided for crank arms
only, but unfortunately I am after 165mm arms and those vendors are only
offering lengths from 170mm upwards.

I'm pretty sure the Mighty Tour is 110 BCD only (i.e. no 74 BCD fitting).

In the end I splurged on an Alpina2 crankset from Alex's Cycle in Japan
(comes with chainrings but I can reuse two of the three). I've purchased
from them in the past without problem, and if the quality of the cranks is
the same as one of the original model Alpina cranks I have on another bike,
they're about as good as you can get.
