[RBW] Re: WTB: Shifting parts

2016-11-20 Thread Eric Karnes
I've picked up some Silver Downtube Shifters from Riv and a 7-speed
cassette...but to accommodate the larger range, I need a new rear
derailleur.

So, does anyone have a nice 7, 8, or 9 speed rear derailleur they'd be
willing to part with that can accommodate at 32T cog?

Thanks!

The PD is making every attempt to locate the owner. If you know anyone in

[RBW] Re: what skewer please?

2016-11-20 Thread Jeremy Till
What hubs were in this old set of MTB wheels? Anything fancy? I think
back in the day a few brands used slightly oversize axles and skewers. My
Medici came with a Weyless skewer of a larger diameter in the rear, with a
Phil Wood hub whose axle had obviously been modified to accept the larger
skewer. Unfortunately, it broke on me shortly after doing Eroica with it,
but a standard skewer still works fine in there.

Another explanation is that the end of the skewer is slightly bent. Can
you get any of the skewer in the SP hub axle?

I use a skewer from a Shimano LX hub in one of my SP hubs. The other SP
hub I have is was "sold" (really it was OEM spec) under the "Biologic" name
and came with a generic external-cam skewer, that was also branded
"Biologic." So my thought is that any standard QR will work; the funkiness
must be with the skewers from your old wheelset, not with the axle on the
SP hub.

[RBW] FS: Quickbeam 54cm Silver

2016-11-20 Thread dstein
I have a 54 silver quickbeam that I haven't ridden it in months which makes
me think it should go to a better home. I acquired this off a fellow list
member 2 years ago (local in Bay Area) and have primarily used this as an
all rounder with a yepp mini up front for toting around my 2 year old who
is now 3 and weighs to much for the front seat - hence why I'm not really
using this bike a whole lot anymore, pretty much 90% of the minimal riding
I did on this is less than .5 mile trips to the park with her on it. She
uses her balance bike now and I just walk. Took on a 20 mile ride in the
oakland hills once and a ~30 mile ride with some other list members in west
marin another time, seriously put less than 200 miles on it in 2 years.

The list member I got it from got it from another list member, so its 3rd
gen, maybe 4th. Great condition though. No stickers and 2 small chips on
the top tube shown in the pictures. I have some stickers I got from
Rivendell but they're for the orange and green quickbeams, not the silver
one, so I never put them on, and i kind of like it like it is but thats a
personal preference.

I have it setup with soma oxford bars (same shape as albatross). 4 geared
(white industries duo 16x19 in the rear and a sugino 40x32 crank).

I paid $750 for the f/f/h, wheelset, pasela tires, and seat post. I then
added brake levers (~$40), nitto technomic stem ($40), sugino double crank
($146), white industries dos ($125), and soma oxford bars ($59), which add
$410, or $1160 total (all with little wear).

$1000 local pickup in the bay area, $1100 shipped. Will consider parting it
out (at a minimum I want to sell the frame/fork and wheelset).

Pictures (rack, basket, pedals, and saddle not included, though all
negotiable):

Honestly I am not entirely sure - you'd have to look at Mercian geometry or

with longer top tubes than seat tubes, if that is what you are after -
There is a Mercian on ebay right now that has a 52 or 53 seat tube and 55

Re: [RBW] what skewer please?

2016-11-20 Thread Ray Varella
Jay,
When you say the skewer is too wide, are you referring to the diameter of
the skewer being too big around to slide through the hole in the axle or are
you saying that even with the nut screwed all the way down on the skewer it
won't close tight enough when you clamp down the quick release lever?

If it's the former, is there a burr or some other issue obstructing the hole
drilled through the axle?
Have you looked through it with a bright light?
Is the axle bent and the sewer can't go all the way through?

If the latter, is it possible the skewer was not threaded far enough to
properly cinch down?
Is it possible you have inadvertently tried a rear quick release instead of a
front?

[RBW] what skewer please?

2016-11-20 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
My SP-PV8 / DT460 wheel finally showed up today !!! after nearly 2 months
of waiting on parts/shipping/customs/etc.
However, unnoticed by me even though it says so on every website selling
it, the hub comes with no skewer.
No problem, says I. I have an old set of MTB wheels sitting in my shed. I
can pilfer the Q/R skewer from front. That's 100 mm too so it will surely
fit.
Except that it doesn't. It's too wide.

So, please tell me wise ones. What skewer do I need, where do I get it, and
why the !@#$!@#$ doesn't it come with the hub?

I'm ready to start making my own electricity now please.

Thanks,
Jay

[RBW] Re: Bicycle tattoos

2016-11-20 Thread Paul Clifton

I'll play on this one. I got mine as part of a bonus checkpoint at the 9th
and final running of the Broken Hearts and Bicycle Parts alley cat that my
local bike co-op used to put on as a fundraiser. It was my first and is, so
far, my only tattoo. I got it because I knew it would be a reminder of
bikes and community and a really fun day with friends. That race was called
9 Lives and High Fives. They had lots of good tattoos over the years:

Tim, I'm sure I've seen some images of Jerry Bears and skeletons on bikes,
but I can't find them on Google right now. That would make a sweet tatt
though.

[RBW] Re: Poor man's Rivendell Road/Roadeo substitute?

2016-11-20 Thread Ray Varella
I had a Holdsworth which had a nice relaxed riding position, took long reach
brakes and fit a 35mm tire, 120mm rear spacing and Reynolds 531
Very naive riding bike.
A Raleigh International, similar to the Holdsworth.
I looked at a few Raleigh Grand Prixs that ticked the same boxes.

A good friend had a Motobecane Le Champion, it was very very nice and fit all
the above criteria but it had a French thread bottom bracket and headset, if
that matters.

I've been surprised by the very reasonable asking prices on used Rodeos.
They seem to represent outstanding value in a Riv roadbike.

[RBW] Re: Poor man's Rivendell Road/Roadeo substitute?

2016-11-20 Thread Eric Karnes
those old sports tourers are really beatiful bikes! there's a guy here in
philly who has a collection of them in different colors. if i hadn't bought
my used hilsen, this would probably be something i'd be keeping an eye out
for. unfortunately, all of the later 80's era frames (even touring) seem to
have really steep seat tube angles (for my taste at least) and i've never
been able to get quite comfortable on them. but this one seems to have a
fairly reasonable geometry. and i do get the desire to restore an old
beater to tip-top condition.

that said, if i already had a few rivs and knew a good frame builder, i'd
probably just tweak the one that gets the least use and save the money,
hassle, and (most important for me) floorspace.

[RBW] FS: Complete 58 cm Hunqapillar

2016-11-20 Thread Seneca
Hi all,

I'm posting to see if there is interest in purchasing my 58 cm
Hunqapillar. I've loved many things about this bike including upright
sitting posture and the dyno hub but I've hit the point where I haven't
been riding the Hunq that much and I'm thinking it might fit in to a good
home somewhere else. I've tried to show it the sights, including rides
through wine country in Napa Valley, maybe you can continue the tradition?
I spec-ed it to be great as a commuter but also work well for over night
trips (hence the usb port with the Luxos-U dyno hub). If that sounds like
what you want, then this bike might be just for you.

Please email for pics as google groups is giving an error when I attempt to
include images.

About the bike: Purchased and assembled by Rivendell Bicycle Works (I have
the original invoice), we collaboratively spec-ed this bike with a
Rich-built wheel set that includes a dyno Sun-28 hub and luxos-U dyno
headlight. It's the standard build kit with some swapped out items, see
itemized list below.

The bike is in good condition. What this means:

1) The frame is in great condition and the bike has received regular
commuter use. All components are the same as when purchased, it still has
the original brake pads even!
2) The paint is prone to accumulating little blemishes and there are a
number of little scratches and flecks of missing paint on this frame.
3) One of the two welds that attach the kickstand plate broke. It broke as
I helped my friend with a bike move as I was hauling a trailer of their
personal items. It's repairable (by Rivendell or your local welder) but
would mess up the paint. Of course, if you don't use a kickstand or don't
use the double legged kickstand then it wouldn't really matter.

I'm asking $2600+shipping for the complete bike including Brooks saddle and
front/rear racks. I would be willing to sell it without the saddle and
racks for $2350. It's currently housed in Boulder CO but I will be driving
to Los Angeles for Christmas and could bring it along for in person
delivery. Let me know your interest, I might be willing to part it out if
someone wanted only the wheels or just the frame. If you don't think the
price is fair, I'd be open to hearing an alternative fair price and
reasoning.

Not sure if it would handle "like a Riv" but maybe something in old Raleigh

[RBW] Poor man's Rivendell Road/Roadeo substitute?

2016-11-20 Thread masmojo
I am slightly confused I totally understand wanting a Rivendell and for sure a
bike that rides like one iffin you can't afford a Riv., But if you already have
one (or several), hm . . . . What exactly is the itch you're trying to
scratch!?
I mean I do understand, in a way it's fun to while away the hours with "what
if's, but from my experience, we buy Rivendells because Grant has staked out a
particular niche, that nobody else caters to.
Just to complicate things more you have rather narrow component range in mind.
Doable? Yes, practical? Not really, but I guess shit could happen!?
I realize this is mostly for fun, mental gymnastics as it were. And since I am
still not 100% sure what you are trying to accomplish, I will make suggestions
with the understanding that I could be WAY off base.
I have heard of some older bikes by Dawes(sp?), nothing fancy, but some models
had longish top tubes, a few others, new bikes, spring to mind for their
Rivishness, like Kogswell & Rawland, but I know you are looking in history's
dustbin, so maybe not appropriate? Anywayz good luck with that, I would be
interested it whatever fruits your labors uncover, if for no other reason the
to be able visualize exactly what it is you are going on about, because as of
now I can't quite wrap my mind around it.
Cheers!

couple months of the year the past two winters, maybe 600-800 miles on them
tops. Tread is still perfect, though the studs have gone brown. 7 studs
missing total (3 on one, 4 on the other). One stud is mis-seated and
probably not long for the tire. I'll need to find a box to ship them in,
but can probably do $75 for the pair to CONUS, or I'll just do $60 for both
if anyone is near the Indianapolis area. Pictures on request, no problem,
and shoot me a private message if you're interested.

[RBW] Poor man's Rivendell Road/Roadeo substitute?

2016-11-20 Thread BenG
Before I could buy a Riv, I followed the recommendation by Sheldon Brown of a
1972 Schwinn Sports Tourer. 120mm rear fits 35mm Paselas sans fender; stock
14-34-or-so freewheel and 54-40 Nervar crank; fillet brazed frame painted cool
lemon yellow; Brooks B15; to-die-for twin stick shifters all set me back $300.
1972 spokes were the weak link. Rich built 700C wheels on the stock Maillard
hubs (the ones that begat the Phil Rivvy hubs), and I modified the brake arms
to reach them. Geometry is laid back comfortable, but feels fast. If you can
work something out to improve the 45yr old wheels, and like to play with bikes,
it's inexpensive fun, making American bikes great again. Maybe somebody will be
doing this with my Rivs in 2060.

[RBW] Re: Sugino XD crankarms only

2016-11-20 Thread Garth

I have read the RD2( rd meaning road-130mm bcd), is cold forged, though
some just say forged, which is the same case for the XD(which signifies a
110 bcd , with 74 bcd for the triple).

Honestly, cold forging does not mean better or worse, the quality/grade of
the aluminum, the shape and just how it is made is what matters. Frankly, I
don't think they are very good cranks at all regardless, from my
experience. I recently purchased a pair of Origin8 110 double crank arms
and I notice a diference in stiffness compared to the XD they replaced.
Plus no silly hidden bolts. The crank bolts have not loosened after first
tightenening, like the old dàys I remember before the XD when cranks bolts
stayed cranked. If anyone is looking for a decent 110 double for not a lot
of $$ I would recommend those. They may be marketed as bmx, single speed
or something but they are just regular 2 ring 110 cranks, use a 107mm
cartridge bb.

I thought about various tatoos all my life, but discarded each idea because
I'm too fickle and they would be permanent.
Then, at 64, I saw a drawing similar to this,

and decided "that is me!"

one or three others to go. This is inspiring me to get them out of the flat
