I, too, have a hard time picturing what the silver would look like as a full
frame. Especially around the lugs. Could be rad or could be just fine.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis now redundant?

I can confirm that drop bars on a JA is a bad idea. It's why I'm selling
mine. Riv tried to explain this to me prior to purchase but I thought I'd
give it a try. Didn't work. They are different bikes and are meant to be
set up differently. Expensive lesson. ;)

[RBW] Re: Vintage Expedition vs. AHH and Atlantis

2017-03-02 Thread Bill M.
I have a sister to your Expedition, an '84 Miyata 1000. I'm the original
owner. AFAIK Miyata built the Expedition's for Spec. The geo differs just
a bit, mostly in the steeper ST angle of the Spec. The actual geo of my
Miyata is very close to that of an AHH in the same size. I have not ridden
the AHH, but I am sure the Miyata is MUCH stiffer. I was told BITD that
the DT was 1.2 mm / 1.0 mm / 1.2 mm with the other tubes in proportion.
Not 'planing' territory by any means. It rides a bit like a brick
unloaded, but gets pleasantly more lively with a rear load.

I think the green Clem is beautiful. I helped my bro in law set up his green 65

I was guessing the new Appa color would be that.

One could get the mustard Appaloosa, call it the Zappaloosa, and put a Yellow
Snow sticker on it.

I don't think Riv could dream of adding shipping labor into the price of frames
and bikes. Grant has been vocal about trying to keep the prices manageable
while still actually making money off them since, like, 1994. I feel confident
that if I pick up a bike in Walnut Creek, I'm not paying a packing cost for
someone else's Riv.

I suppose I took the shipping price too literal compared to another online
store where I figure I'm paying postage and that's essentially it. Packing is a
pain no doubt, I thought those costs may be accounted for in item prices to
some degree as well. I typically use shipbikes.com and have shipped bikes all
over for around $100, box from local shop is $5-$10, pipe insulation and time.
I've not personally witnessed their packing but I hope to soon and will
appreciate the effort.

Based on my personal experience I say go silver here is why. Somehow I ended up
with 3 greenish Rivs at one point in time, an atlantis, simpleone, and proto
hunqa. My wife walks into the garage one day and says my bikes are cute because
of the ombre color scheme! Cute and ombre not what I want to hear about my
manly beast bicycles, I cringed !) But seriously Riv seems to do alot of green
frames. Seems like the silvers and mustards show up a bit less. So if you plan
on having more than one Riv and don't want em to end up all matchy matchy cute
ombre style grab a silver or orange or mustard when they come up...

Ryan,
The Appa would be a 55. I could fit a 58 or 61 Atlantis according to the
Riv guide. I remember when I first discovered Riv and an Atlantis was
$1200. That was sooo far out of my reach for a long time. Now I am doing
okay (public school teacher :)) and have bike priorities. I could have
pulled the trigger on the demo they had up a couple of weeks ago. My
amazing wife says I can do whatever I want bikewise, but alas, I'm a hemmer
and hawer and missed my chance. I'm really in no hurry to buy another bike,
but I really like the idea of supporting Rivendell and Co in a time of
seeming uncertainty and that has motivated my thinking on a Joe. Good luck
on your long awaited 68cm...you tall guys don't have it easy!

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell uses BikeFlights

2017-03-02 Thread Richard Rios
Agreed about Riv's shipping cost. I always cringe a bit when I sell a bike and
know it's gotta be shipped, it's a fair amount of work. In fact after a few DIY
bike boxing adventures I don't / wont do it myself any more. I now take it to
the bike shop who charges 60$. They do a good job or I wouldn't use them but I
don't think they put in the love Riv does and they use recycled materials. So
if I think about it like that Riv's shipping is very reasonable. It still bums
me out to pay it but watcha gonna do? I can't rationalize spending so much on a
bike and then gettin all cheapskate on shipping...

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell uses BikeFlights

Correct again. It takes me every bit of 2 hours to pack a bike, in fact I
don't think I can do it in two hours and I've done it alot, plus
materials, chasing down a box and varios other things to make it work right.
Rivs prices are not out of line the least bit IMO.

Hi Toshi. I am very interested in your frame. I see and accept the ding.
I would be willing to pay Bike Flights plus any packing costs you would
incur. I would work around your time schedule (In other words I wouldn't
be breathing down your neck for shipping). Payment would be immediate if
you accept my offer. As far as a good home, well I am nuts over Riv bikes

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell uses BikeFlights

Rivendell has to buy the box and other supplies and pay a person a decent wage
to do the work. They probably also insure the bike which adds considerable
cost. I just shipped a bike with BikeFlights from ND to VA and the cost with
insurance was $124. That was using the box from Riv and all their shipping
materials. I am sure Rivs price is fair and honest.

Cheers!

amount of volume that business does with the carrier. The more volume, the
higher the discount. Suspect that amount of frames and bikes shipped by

Mate that with a 7 or 8 speed index shifter and a recent Shimano rear
derailleur and you've got a mostly modern bike.

Couple that cassette up with the proper choice of chain rings, and you
can really make a pretty nice drive train. Here's a configuration that
would tick all of my boxes:

50/34/24 700x32 6 spd 14-28

96.463.646.3
84.455.740.5
75.049.536.0
64.342.430.9
56.337.127.0
48.231.823.1

And also note that thanks to the narrow hub and the flexible modern
chain you could use all six of the sprockets with the big ring and have
no cross-chain angularity issues. Given my basic parameters (high <=
100 gear inches, low on the middle ring ~ 32", low on the granny ~
20-23") this is right there. No monster cliffs to fall off or struggle
to climb up, no zigzagging back and forth trying to eke out reasonable
spacing and no major compromises on range either. Not shabby at all.
Actually, this is the first time I've calculated a 34/50 that made any
sense to me!

Wonderful frame, would have to spend a good bit of cash to

certainly worth going to. Modern brakes have much less flex.

As for wheels, modern rims with machined brake track (Mavic
Open Pro, CR 18 for instance) would be preferred. I like
Shimano hubs because they are easy to rebuild and service
from that period. Downside is finding a 120 freewheel hub

I am wondering if you are using the proper stem? Is there a gap between the

you are probably using the wrong size stem.
I had a similar problem on a Technomic stem, but it just needed a bit more

Of course they are redundant but they aren't the same. Look at the number of
road racing bikes the big bike companies sell. Are they redundant? Yes but each
is different enough to justify a separate model. The differences between them
may appeal to one buyer or another.

What's wrong with a little redundancy?

Re: [RBW] Re: New tires, perhaps?

2017-03-02 Thread Patrick Moore
Learn to fix flats -- it's not hard, and if you carry a spare tube or 2 and
fix the puncture proper at home, you can be back on the road in a few
minutes -- usually faster than walking to your destination. The longest
part is pumping the tire, and even this can be minimized and the effort
reduced by using a really good pump. My favorites are the old Zefal HPx or
the much newer Lezyne that converts into a little footpump (far better IME
than the Topeak equivalent).

"New tires" -- you * can* get thorn proof (so called) tubes that are about
3-4 mm thick on the bottom and tremendously heavy, and fill those with
sealant. I personally hate them and belted tires and simply learned to fix
flats quickly, but this combination does work against at least narrow
penetrants.

Good luck.

[RBW] Vintage Expedition vs. AHH and Atlantis

2017-03-02 Thread Kevin Lindsey
Greetings.
I'm in the process of building up a 1983 Specialized Expedition (which is a
really lovely bike). From a distance, the frame looks to have more or less
the same geometry as the AHH or, possibly, the Atlantis. Does anyone have
experience with the vintage Expeditions such that he or she could compare
its ride to one of the Rivs?
Thanks,
Kevin Lindsey

have them check that it wasn't caused by exposed rim that cut the tube and

Hopefully someone will stop and fix your flat.

I have the old Rambouillet page link here (which has the geometry):

I just saw the FS post for the 54cm. Good price too. Sounds like

After Steve mentioned that 120mm Gran Bois cassette hub I surfed over to

cassette they sell for it and it'd be even more perfect. It has a 14-28
gear range on it which would be a great match for that Raleigh. It'd be
the way I'd go for sure.

Downside is finding a 120 freewheel hub built to a modern machined

The take home messages for me are (1) your choice of handlebar is an
important consideration in choosing between the two and (2) if you want an
Atlantis then accept no substitute! The latter is a message I think many

[RBW] Re: Atlantis now redundant?

2017-03-02 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I enjoyed that long description of the Joe on the Blug. A couple of
favorite passages:

*If you go about riding thinking there’s nothing you shouldn’t be able to
conquer, you’ll eventually wreck something; so don’t think it’s you vs
terrain. ... The woods aren’t your gym and hiking isn’t failure, it’s just
a way to rest your pedaling muscles, activate other ones, and slow down
enough to look up and down and around.*

*Don’t save the Appaloosa for special rides just because it’s beautiful. If
your heirs inherit a pristine bike they’ll figure you were a collector, and
they’ll be afraid to ride perfect-condition pedal-bike, so they’ll sell it
to a stranger.*
As someone who has done many estate sales and cleanouts, and otherwise gone
through dead people's stuff, that last one resonates with me. Just
yesterday, an auctioneer was dropping off loads of smalls, and I said man,
I hope I get rid of all my crap so nobody has to go through it all. They'll
just find me laying among a big pile of bicycles and bicycle parts. All
well-used, of course.

As for redundancies and overlap, all Rivendells are going to have
attributes that make them functional, versatile, and comfortable. The
Rodeo, never mind the Joe or the Atlantis, is no doubt six times better and
more capable than 92% of the bikes that traveled the countryside coast to
coast in the 70s. I would say, given their take on bicycles, they've done a
good job of keeping things fresh and exciting, even if the differences
between models are sometimes a bit subtle. But a significantly lower price
point is not subtle!

[RBW] Atlantis now redundant?

2017-03-02 Thread Garth
The Atlantis is pretty much the signature Riv frame these days. It has been
around since the very late 90's and as mentioned, since they are built to order
they never have unsold frames to concern over. Back then I could have bought
one in the very original geometry that had longer tt's, but I ordered a local
custom frame instead so it was an apples oranges kinda thing.

Thia questioned has been asked every so often with the intro of the next latest
greatest expando geo frame, but again for all reasons already mentioned the
Atlantis will be. Any preconfigured frame geo is great if a specific frame fits
you, not if it doesn't. Customs are always great ! Of all Riv models only a
60cm. Bomba works for me and I am so glad I have one. It still has the longest
reach of all stock Riv frames. I look at it as others see an Atlantis.
