Re: [RBW] Re: The Bosque in the "monsoon"

2017-08-18 Thread Patrick Moore
Oddly enough, it appears to have an English cousin, in the current
adjective "bosky", shaded, from the Middle English "bosk", bush.

*Our* bosque is a very pleasant interval in our high desert landscape
(which has its own severe beauty). I was *very* fortunate, 14 years ago, to
find an affordable duplex in a very pretty little infill project right
smack up against the bosque, less than 1/2 mile west of the Big River. I
can climb over my wall in be among deciduous trees, something rather rare
here in the high desert.

Carla,

I've got a orange, 56 canti-Sam. I can use up to a 45 Smart Sam tire
without fenders. They occasionally rubbed a double kickstand if I pedaled
hard so I swapped it for a single and no problems. I still had clearance
at the chainstays. With fenders I use the 38 Barlow Pass and 40 Mondial
tires without problems. They all measure pretty close to size with
calipers.

I have a Velo Deflopinator (not currently in use, it's around here somewhere).
You can set it up with enough tension to keep the wheel from slamming over into
your toptube, but its ability to keep a wheel straight while portaging is
limited. It helps, but having it tight enough to have the front end hardly move
would be too tight for riding.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne vs A. Homer Hilsen

2017-08-18 Thread tc
The Sam is a really super bike. Bought one with albatross bars, sks
fenders, mark's rack. My (tall) wife rode it and loved it, so she has that
Sam now.

Then I got another one with the noodle drop bar, which is what I shoulda
gotten in the first place. Now we each have what we love.

This is a quality bike that runs smooth and 'just fits'. I could actually
ride a 60, but the 58 is fine (speaking to the comment about being on the
line between sizes). Seat and bar adjustments can go a long way to dialing
in the fit if you're torn between sizes.

It would be amazing to see how an AHH would fit me so much better, and make
me grin so much more, so as to justify the significant price difference.
We hope to visit RBW in the Fall, and you can bet I'll try to ride an AHH
to compare and see what all the fuss is about :)

I weigh 115 lbs. My 46 cm Appaloosa with bags weighs 32 lbs and I have to
carry it up three flights of stairs. I will usually grab the middle of the
top tube with my right hand and carry it low, balancing some of the weight
against my hip. I use my left hand to guide/support the grip on the
handlebar. I'm very intrigued by the Velo wheel stabilizer. Has anyone
used one? Not having to keep the handlebars from hitting me, the stairs,
or the railings would give me additional carrying options.

It doesn't completely meet your criteria, as it was set up as a 1x9 with an

the wheels. Dura-ace hubs laced to OpenPro rims were quite light, but still

Exliontamer told the truth- it was in pristine shape upon arrival. I've

Re: [RBW] Re: Custom bike

2017-08-18 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
Hi Lee,

Yes Patrick is right, the stability is a feeling of being in control of the
bike with the absence of any jittery feeling or twitchiness. I had a
similar epiphany when I converted my Ram from 700c to 650b and went from 32
mm 700c tires to 42 mm 650b tires. The wide supple tires gave a strikingly
greater feeling of control and balance on my bike.

What is a custom going for now?

[RBW] Re: New Clem L

2017-08-18 Thread REC
Hi, Lum.

Weight is an issue for me, because I have to lift a bike high to store it
on the bike wall rack (it's the upper most bike) in a long narrow hallway.
I know bike stores think I'm nuts, but I make sure I can lift every bike I
consider. I could not lift the 2016 Clementine; perhaps the 2017s are
lighter. I can lift my Joe A. with rack and bags, but it's not easy,
especially when I'm tired from my ride. I was able to lift a Cheviot and
it was a lot lighter than I thought it would be. I own the Joe.

Probably more subjective than you're looking for, but perhaps this will
help a little. I'm in my late 50's and this is part of my strength
training :) .

Hi, Mark in Beacon.

I use a bungee cord to keep my front wheel from flopping around when
lifting it. hook on water bottle cage, thru wheel, back to water bottle
cage.

[RBW] Re: 200 miles on 10 bikes, an essentially pointless self-challenge

2017-08-18 Thread Bill Lindsay
2 down, 8 to go. I finished up my 200 miles quota on my 56cm Single Top
Tube, Cantilever, Rivendell Samuel Hillborne (first of four Rivendells).
Those 200 miles went too fast and leave me wanting more. If I stay ahead
of schedule and 3000 miles appears to be in play, bank on it that a lot of
the extra credit miles will come back on Sam. It's a truly splendid bike.
With nice light wheels and tires, a svelte but capable 2x9 drivetrain, and
not a lot of extraneous stuff strapped to it, it's a terrific little road
bike, and up to the task for some spirited underbiking:

With front and rear lowriders, it'll be a great loaded touring bike, as
well. With these 38mm Compass Steilacooms, it's practically a cross-racer.

I'm about 550 miles into my 2000 goal. I have one more week of work, and
then the real miles can start going down when I'm on sabbatical (or, with
no work to go to, perhaps I'll sleep in all day?).

I posted a full profile picture of my 1985 Schwinn Tempo. In that post I
said that I don't know what "turn-in" is. Patrick Moore responded to that
post, informing me that 'turn-in' is common knowledge. Patrick Moore later
asked for photos of my 1985 Schwinn Tempo, so I posted two alternative
views. Patrick Moore requested a full profile picture.

Bringing it full-circle, here is the full profile picture of my 1985
Schwinn Tempo, that anybody who views this list on a web browser can see,
but you email users apparently can't find.

[RBW] Re: PDX To Eclipse Ride - Anyone Going?

2017-08-18 Thread Orc
Yeah, I'm going to head south as well. From Sellwood, it's between 20-25
miles to the edge of totality (and once past the Molalla River there are a
lot of N/S tertiary roads which will HOPEFULLY not be complete parking
lots) so a stupidly early departure gives plenty of time to at least make
it to the edge for that 10 seconds of total eclipse.

[RBW] Custom bike

2017-08-18 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
Hi all, I've gotten several questions about the custom up on Instagram, so
I thought I would tell you about the bike.

I plan to use the 650b bike for randonneuring. It has the dropout that
allows a wireless connection to a Schmidt dynamo. I'm planning to ride
with 42mm Hetre/BSP tires. The 42s likely wouldn't clear the Paul Racers
without deflation, so I opted to get the Compass Centerpulls. There is
internal wire routing as well as some thoughtful braze-ons for wiring of
the taillight in the rear.

While Grant was designing the bike, he had me ride the Blue Rosco Road.
The long chainstays gave the Rosco Road a fantastic stability in the ride,
but the bike felt really nimble when I shifted my weight. I know that I am
going to love the ride with the long chainstays.

Can't wait till it's built up!

I won't say I wish I still had mine, but I'd like to ride one again to

Odd: mine could not handle a 26 (labeled; may well have been narrower) tire

Re: [RBW] Re: Jan's Yellow Rivendell

2017-08-18 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Accounting for inflation, $900 in 1995 equals $1,444 in 2017, so unless Jan
paid less than $900 back then, it did not sell for more than he paid for
it.

[RBW] Re: New Clem L

2017-08-18 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I would agree that 27 pounds for a Clem with a few accoutrements is
optimistic. Although some of the tubes on the newer versions is not as
oversize, that would have little affect.

I live in a third-floor walkup apartment. When going down the stairs, I
carry my Clem L with left hand on the headset area to prevent bar swing,
right hand gripping near chainstay. Coming up, left hand the same, right
hand on the curve of the step thru tube, aka top tube.

Because of the weight plus the large size (mine is 52), BOBs (Big Ol'
Boscos) and lack of top tube, I would be hard pressed to carry this bicycle
up and down stairs with one hand, though I could manage it going up if I
had to. One handed stair descents with mixtes or step thru frames is always
going to be problematic in my experience.

[RBW] Re: Ideas for using Busch & Muller tail light without a rack?

2017-08-18 Thread Orc
Yes, as a matter of fact:

(dropout mount with strip metal bracket)

(rack mount mount)

(brazed on mount up a little ways from the dropout)

(canti post mount; this one is on the fork, but a canti post mount is a
canti post mount whether or not it's on the front or on the back of the
bicycle.)

The first two have the wiring run inside the frame, the last two have the
wiring elegantly ziptied to the frame (the third is going to have the
wiring routed inside the frame after I run it on a couple of longer rides
this weekend/monday and can strip it down for painting; the forth is my
xtracycle so the frame is going to be replaced in the next month or so.)
