Re: [RBW] Re: Bar Tape Blues

2017-09-15 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
Great to see the photos of your bikes, James.

I'm not a cloth tape and shellac guy. That method is great on the wooden
tiller of my vintage sailboat, but on the bike, I'll use regular bar tape
with a modicum of cushion, then use cloth tape to finish of the wrap. Once
I find a shade of blue for the end of time, I may get some Handlebra
leather tape made, which should last for many years.

[RBW] Re: Berthoud decaleur measurement question.

In the GB catalog, ther is a table for the size of decailluer based on the
bag used, length of stem and height from top of rack to centerline of the
stem bolt and type of stem bolt orientation (vertical or horzantal). The
table gives the proper length to use, e.g a H-91 or a H-121.

I could not find the table using some quick searches but it is there. I

[RBW] Re: Crankset help please.

2017-09-15 Thread lum gim fong
Thanks, Ron!
That's okay. I understand. Thanks for looking out for me on both accounts,
though.

My measurement was just because I wanted to be sure the crank arms, and
thus the pedals, were running at equal distances to the seat tube/bb so
that nothing was off. Although I think I have heard of people offsetting to
one side or another. So I guess even if it was not equidistant by a few mm,
it would not matter.

On my other bike (Bleriot), the drive side crank arm is like 4cm more
outboard. On this bike, the Rambouillet, the crank arms are the same
distance to the seat tube. I don't know what they were before I
re-installed the crank. But they are symmetrical now.
It has a Shimano UN55-110 bottom bracket.

I still think a possible solution for you is a drive-side spacer, but I'm

Have you thought about using clear shellac on the dark blue newbaums? It would

Quality and value...what's not to like ; that is a nice looking machine and
certainly Rivish in spirit.

I hope that she likes it

Re: [RBW] Re: Crankset help please.

2017-09-15 Thread Patrick Moore
I recall reading the story of 2 brothers who toured the world on custom
Raleighs (I think they were Raleighs) in the early '80s; they set their
bikes up with 2 chainrings but no front derailleurs, and carried
strategically hooked bits of wire clipped to the bar or something which
they used to shift the chain from ring to ring.

I recall building my Ken Rogers trike without a fd -- forget why; it had a
Stronglight 99 wide range double. It was fun, at the time, to be able to
come to a dead stop on a hill with feet still clipped in and butt in
saddle, then to release right foot, backpedal with left, and push the
bottom of the chain onto granny with right toe. I did have to get off at
the top of the hill to shift it back onto the big ring.

[RBW] Re: Bar Tape Blues

2017-09-15 Thread stevef
Yeah, I had the Fizik metal blue on my orange rambly for a while, tho I
can't find any pics to share. I run Fizik in white on it now which looks
good and is reasonably easy to clean. It's good tape if you can find a
color to suit you...

[RBW] Re: Bar Tape Blues

2017-09-15 Thread Jay Connolly
Fizik Performance tape comes in a metal blue. It's quite dark, though not a
true navy, and has a slight metallic sheen to it, which may or may not put you
off. I like the padding of this tape and find it easy to clean, when necessary.

[RBW] 64cm Clem L

2017-09-15 Thread Jay Connolly
Ordered. I have been admiring the Cheviots and Clem's for some time, and at one
point I was going to order a 59 Clem. Then I caught wind of the 64 Clem L and
yesterday snagged the first pre-order frameset in grilver.

As recently as 3 years ago, I may well have scoffed at the idea of a
step-through (or even a rack or kickstand) despite the fact that I've never
been fast and have ZERO claims on the title "performance cyclist." But I set my
Joe up as a hauler (basket, medium Saddlesack, a rear rack when needed, etc)
and have enjoyed it tremendously. I took that bike to our new cottage a week
ago and miss it already. The big Clem L will replace the Joe on the home front.
I will build it up as a 1x11 with a 32 front and an 11-42 rear, since I have
those parts on-hand.

Jay

[RBW] Re: Crankset help please.

2017-09-15 Thread Ian A
I tried running without a front derailleur for a while. Stick shifting didn't
work well for me. I could never find a stick when I needed one, sometimes
overshifted by foot, and quite often ended up with greasy hand syndrome.

A well set-up front derailleur is a pleasure. Can be a pain to set-up, but the
payoff is well worthwhile.
